On June 4th 2011, the Gardai responded to reports of a young man found seriously injured on the side of the road near Carrickmacross. 22 year old Gavin O'Connor was unrecognisable due to his injuries, but he was found by people who recognised his outfit from being out with him the night before. What was originally thought to be a hit and run, was soon discovered to be a cold and calculated murder, for no reason. We spoke with Gavin's parents Helena and Gerry about Gavin, their life since his death, and how they have been let down by the system that was built to keep us safe. Gavin O'Connor - director of Warrior, The Accountant & new Ben Affleck movie Finding The Way Back by JOE
We sink our MMA-ignorant teeth into Warrior for the 53rd edition of Scoring At The Movies. Even though we're out of our element talking about this sport, we found Gavin O'Connor's movie to be effective and even quite touching. It's also yet another Rocky story. Sly's brainchild comes up yet again on this channel. Anyway, Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy---not to mention papa Nick Nolte---are all terrific. Too bad their father/sons relationships were given short shrift to make room for Tommy's unnecessary military backstory. Also, is there too much time spent on the sports in this sports movie? That'll come up. Regardless, this one impressed us a lot more than we expected. So have more courage than we ever could and get in the octagon. Wait! Stupid idea. Just listen to our podcast instead. Also, do what the brothers (eventually) do in this movie and take care of each other. It's a rough time right now and we can use all the bonding we can get. Tweets, huh? Yeah, tweets. We're @moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies On June 25th, we will in fact talk about the business of baseball in Moneyball

Michael and Pax watch Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, and Joel Edgerton in Gavin O'Connor's film about a woman defending her home from a gang of ruthless killers. Pax also talks about Yul Brynner and George Segal in Invitation to a Gunfighter (1964), while Michael watches more Zorro and reads the collected webcomic High Moon by David Gallaher and Steve Ellis.
Why exactly do we find underdog sports stories so captivating? It's lowkey Martha's favorite genre of movie, and Pete still finds a way of subverting the assignment for his own purposes. The homework for the episode: Moneyball (2011, dir. Bennett Miller) and Miracle (2004, dir. Gavin O'Connor).
The boys are back! Casey, Mac and Rob take a look at Miracle (2004, hockey) directed by Gavin O'Connor. Kurt Russell is the legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks as the US tries to take down the mighty Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympic Games in one of the most beloved sports movies ever. To prevent a gush-fest, the boys are tasked with finding two critiques of the film, including Rob's red-hot take about the infamous Herbies "Mike Eruzione" scene...
In what will be our last theatrical outing for a very long time, the Lodgecast witnessed The Way Back on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. Little did we know when we entered the AMC Burbank 6 theater to witness this sports drama, that in one week AMC theaters would be closed worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic. Actor Ben Affleck shows us The Way Back from alcoholism in this realistic performance that mirrored the actor's own struggles with booze. Directed by Gavin O'Connor, this movie is an inspiration to us all as Affleck plays basketball coach Jack Cunningham. While AMC Theaters are currently closed and the future of the AMC A-List is doubtful, fear not Lodgecast listeners! We've got some spicy Video-on-Demand Lodgecasts coming your way throughout the coronavirus quarantine. In the meantime we're hoping that we can all find the way back!
On this week’s podcast, Glenn and Daniel venture back in time with director Chris Roberti to a time when we could all gather aboard a cruise ship and secretly shoot a romantic comedy about time-traveling assassins, with Same Boat, which hits VOD on Tuesday 4/7. We also catch up with Birds of Prey, an impressive […]
Edu has shot movies and commercials around the world with very unique directors, developing a beautiful eye, an honest smile and a very personal style. Born in Barcelona in 1981, Edu Grau studied filmmaking in ESCAC (Spain) and the NFTS (UK) specializing early as a Director of Photography. At 23, when he was not ready for that, and after the Sundance winning short "LA RUTA NATURAL", Edu shot his first feature, Albert Serra's "HONOR DE CAVALLERIA", which premiered at Cannes'06 and 40 other festivals. Then he paired up with Tom Ford for his debut feature in Hollywood, "A SINGLE MAN", that was acclaimed as one of the most cinematically beautiful films of 2009 and got Colin Firth a Bafta and an Oscar Nom. Vice magazine included it in the ¨30 most beautiful movies of all time¨. In 2009, Edu filmed "BURIED" with Rodrigo Cortés, and starring Ryan Reynolds. The film won Edu the Bronze Frog for Best Cinematography at Camerimage'10 and a Goya nomination. "FINISTERRAE" won the main award in Rotterdam'11, while his return to the Uk was with Nick Murphy's "THE AWAKENING", with Rebecca Hall and Dominic West. Shortly after came a special movie by his talented old friend Marçal Forés,"ANIMALS", pretty much in the vein of the shorts that they used to do together. Edu was then given the opportunity to work with Lady Gaga at the peak of her career, "BORN THIS WAY" was the result. In 2012, Edu premiered in Toronto Dante Ariola's "ARTHUR NEWMAN" with Emily Blunt and Colin Firth. "A SINGLE SHOT" with Sam Rockwell and Bill H Macy was just before "SUITE FRANÇAISE" by Saul Dibb, with Michelle WiIliams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Mathias Schoenaerts and Sam Riley. "SUFFRAGETTE", directed by Sarah Gavron and with Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep was Edu's next step modernizing a period film. "THE GIFT" by Joel Edgerton and starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall was one of the surprise film of 2015. "TRESPASS AGAINST US" by Adam Smith featuring Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson was a gypsie chase movie. His new 25M budget movie, "GRINGO" by Nash Edgerton with Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo and Joel Edgerton is a dark action comedy. In 2017, he shot "QUIÉN TE CANTARÁ" directed by the cult auteur Carlos Vermut. He was nominated for a Goya, a Gaudí and a CEC for Best Cinematography. Later on, Edu reteamed with the one and only Joel Edgerton to do "BOY ERASED" with Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Xavier Dolan and Flea. The movie got two Golden Globes nominations. Edu recently shot Gavin O'Connor's latest movie at Warner Bros "THE WAY BACK" starring Ben Affleck. The movie will be released March 6th 2020. After an amazing run with some top commercial directors, Edu has just wrapped Rebecca Hall's debut feature "PASSING", with Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negra, Andre Holland, Alex Skarsgard and Bill Camp. It is Edu's first film in glorious B&W and 4:3. The movie will be released in the festival and awards season of 2020. Meet Edu Grau.
For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham, Amanda Spears & Dan Bayer to discuss and review the latest film from Gavin O'Connor starring Ben Affleck as you've never seen him before. "The Way Back" is a sports drama and meta personal story for the film's star dealing with alcoholism. What did we think of the story? How is Ben Affleck? Find out our thoughts and more in our review. The trailers for this film came off like the typical sports movie we've seen before. While The Way Back has parts of things we've seen in sports movies before, much like in Warrior, director Gavin O'Connor keeps the emphasis on the emotional journey that Affleck's character is going through and its not the typical one that you think it ends up being. Overall this ends up being a solid movie that isn't the Oscar bait film that the trailers make it to be. 3BG rating: 8 out of 10 Twitter: @cjwizgeek @blknerdjapan @3blackgeeks Site: www.3blackgeeks.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/3blackgeeks Join our Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/813597965405307/

Our 40th Scoring At The Movies podcast goes back to the 1980 Winter Olympics as we gab about one of the greatest upsets of all time in one of the best pure sports films we’ve covered yet. We dug into the world-shaping issues of the late-’70s, problems that went way beyond USA v USSR on a hockey rink. Both of us also watched the actual “miracle” game on YouTube, so we were able to spend plenty of time comparing what’s portrayed to what really happened. The hockey action is vividly done by director Gavin O’Connor and the acting (led by Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks) is as good as it needs to be. After all, most of the players were athletes more than they were actors. So jump on the bandwagon, but play like a bunch o’ commies (we’ve got a hot take on that!) and hear us tongue-wag about Miracle…again…again…again… Pedantry Alert: Mario Lambert was Montreal’s coach and Ronald Corey was the team’s president when Patrick Roy said he’d just played his last game for the Canadiens. Also, plenty of other Soviets from this dominant USSR team other than Vladislav Tretiak are in the Hockey Hall Of Fame. Also also, just to be clear, Wayne Gretzky was an executive for Canada’s ’02 Olympic team, not a player. Also also also, Mark Johnson scored 2 goals in the miracle game, not a hat-trick (Buzz Schneider and Mike Eruzione scored the other two). Contact can be made: @moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies Our website: www.top100project.com On December 26th, we'll talk about Jerry Maguire

Welcome to another episode of Don’t Be Crazy! Here we discuss and dissect what makes a film (past or present) absolutely amazing or a pile of rubbish. All that we ask of each other is don’t be crazy. This week we take a look at Warrior directed by Gavin O'Connor. This gritty film throws us smack dab in the middle of the octagon where a broken family must find a way to heal by beating the crap out of each other. Of course there's a little more to it than that, but you'll just have to listen to the show. Don’t be crazy. Paddy Conlon: Listen to me. I thought maybe we could break bread. You know, just open some lines of communication. Brendan Conlon: You got two lines of communication. You got the telephone and the post office. This week, we watch the Rocky inspired sports drama, where Nick Nolte drunkenly rambles his way to an oscar nomination, and Tom Hardy muscles are doing their demo reel for The Dark Knight Rises. This film is not so much for the fans of the UFC, but for fans of family drama and The National. Warrior (2011), directed by Gavin O'Connor.
Director Joel Edgerton discusses his film, Boy Erased, with fellow director Gavin O'Connor. Based on the memoir of the same name by Garrard Conley, the film tells the true coming of age and coming out story of Jared, who is viciously outed to his parents. Pressured into attending a church-supported gay conversion program, he butts heads with its head therapist and begins to find his own voice and accept his true self. Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan return this week with a look at how an autistic assassin manages to hold down his life with accounting. Yes, The Accountant is finally out and we discuss the probability of Ben Affleck becoming the next action star, the absurdity of it all, and why we're not opposed to a sequel to this film. Directed by Gavin O'Connor and starring Affleck, JK Simmons, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, John Lithgow and Cynthia Addai-Robinson, this was a fun movie to review as we kind of expected. However, Dylan also went ahead and watched The Greasy Strangler, which is available on VOD now. It's absurd, but in a much more grandiose and eccentric way. There's also some news to get through and Blu-ray releases, including Criterion's release of Pan's Labyrinth from Guillermo del Toro. Exciting times for a Blu-ray fan. Next week, we will return with a look at Jack Reacher: Never Go Back because Chris demands it.
Emma and Jaqai review Ben Affleck's "The Accountant" and Emily Blunts "The Girl on the Train." Also in this episode is an interview with Ben Affleck and director Gavin O'Connor. Plus Jaqai's move and Emma's decision to lace up ice skates for her birthday.
Noah Emmerich’s breakout performance was in Ted Demme’s cult hit Beautiful Girls (Natalie Portman, Uma Thurman, Matt Dillon). His next role, opposite Jim Carrey in Peter Weir’s Academy Award-nominated The Truman Show, firmly established his outstanding talent. Most recently Noah starred alongside Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Patrick Stewart and Minnie Driver in Damian Harris’ Wilde Wedding. Additional file credits include Todd Field’s Academy Award nominated Little Children (Kate Winslet), Gavin O’Connor’s Jane Got A Gun, starring Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor and Joel Edgerton, J.J. Abrams' Super 8, Gavin O'Connor's Pride & Glory (Edward Norton, Colin Farrell), Doug Liman’s Fair Game (Naomi Watts, Sean Penn), Sympathy for Delicious (Mark Ruffalo), Miracle (Kurt Russell), Frequency (Dennis Quaid), Beyond Borders (Angelina Jolie, Clive Owen), Windtalkers (Nicolas Cage), Life (Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence), Copland (Sylvester Stallone, Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel), Guillaume Canet's Blood Ties (Marion Cotillard, Clive Owen, and Zoe Saldana), and Warrior (Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton). On television, Emmerich currently plays FBI Agent Stan Beeman opposite Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys on F/X’s critically acclaimed drama series The Americans. He also recently appeared to great acclaim as "Dr. Jenner" in Frank Darabont's breakout hit The Walking Dead. He's guest starred on shows including Master of None, Billions, The West Wing, Monk, and White Collar. Recent stage work includes Bruce Norris’ The Qualms at Playwrights Horizons (dir, Pam MacKinnon), Stephen Belber's Fault Lines at the Cherry Lane (dir, David Schwimmer), and the Kennedy Center's production of A Streetcar Named Desire opposite Patricia Clarkson. Emmerich received an honors degree in history from Yale University and studied filmmaking at New York University. He was born and raised in New York City, where he currently lives.
