This week we discuss Metallica's rockumentary, Some Kind of Monster. Filmed during the production of 2003's St. Anger, the documentary explores the bands trials through recording a fraught process. Alcholism, ego, therapy, opportunists, death, reconciliation, new people in, old people out, and more. While we aren't the biggest Metallica fans or metalheads, this is an interesting view into the creative process -- the human element of band dynamics. We give our take as we relate to the marriage that is a band.

This week on the podcast I'm talking about somatic healing with Dr. Luke Sniewski. Learn about what somatic healing involves and how to use somatic exercises to get better in tune with your body. : Dr. Luke Sniewski (Ph.D. in psychology) is a New Zealand well-being coach and somatic therapist. He is a certified practitioner, mentor, and facilitator of Compassionate Inquiry, a therapeutic approach developed by renowned Gabor Maté, aimed at helping people unearth the root causes of their suffering and self-destructive cycles. In November 2022, he launched the book "Somawise: Get out of your head, get into your body", which became a best seller in three categories. Luke argues that authentic change begins with silence, stillness, and the courage to look inward. We may not like what we find there, but getting into our bodies is where the real work of change is done. Through this awareness, we are able to liberate ourselves from our old patterns and core beliefs Links: Website, Book, YouTube channel, Facebook, Instagram. When was the last time you thought about your relationship with alcohol? With Dry January right around the corner, a lot of people are taking an opportunity to do just that, and they aren't alone. As the “sober curious” movement gains popularity in the U.S., people have more options than ever to define and redefine how booze does or doesn't fit into their life. In this episode, “Until It's Fixed” host Callie Chamberlain is joined by Jen Lee Hirst, Deb Nussbaum and Bob Poznanovich for a discussion about how we've historically viewed sobriety, how that's changing lately and how the health care industry can support people reevaluating their alcohol use. Highlights:02:20 A personal perspective | Jen Lee Hirst, a “sober coach” and social influencer who promotes an alcohol-free lifestyle, shares her own story of realizing she needed to re-evaluate the way she used drinking to cope with stress in her life. Now, Jen helps other women find more effective ways to manage stress and care for themselves. 15:40 Changing our habits | Deb Nussbaum from Optum Behavioral Health and Bob Poznanovich of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation join Callie to discuss the ways that the sober curious movement is changing the way medical professionals and the health industry think about helping people who want to cut back on drinking alcohol. This week on the podcast, I'm welcoming Monica Reinagel back onto the show to discuss a recent recommendation I saw for women who are drinking "higher levels" of alcohol (more than seven standard drinks per week) that said that taking 400 mcg of folic acid was recommended to help off-set increased risk of breast cancer. We're breaking down the facts about folic acid and discussing whether or not this recommendation is based on good science and if folic acid can really help us mitigate increased risk of breast cancer from alcohol. Monica sheds light on where this recommendation comes from and why adding this supplement needs to be considered cautiously. Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA: Healthy men under 65: No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older: No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink. Abstinence from alcohol Abstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past. Benefits of “low-risk” drinking Following these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. Noelene Brown spent 12 years in Ireland where she had her three children. Her and her first husband ran a storage business for fertiliser, and were embedded in the local farming community. But one day, without notice, the Irish government put one of their major clients into liquidation, and overnight, Noelene lost everything. Her kids were just 1, 2 and 3 years old, and when the pressure became too much, Noelene turned to the bottle. Her alcohol addiction escalated and it's something she has struggled with for many years both in Ireland, and since her return to Australia. But two years ago she went sober. Now, she's dedicated her life to the rural community as a sobriety coach. This is her story.
This week's guest is not just taking the Cookie Dough industry by storm and serving thousands of households every week, but is doing so while reducing the social stigmas associated with addiction recovery and mental health. Kelsey Moreira is this week's guest on “The Jake Dunlap Show.”Kelsey was born in Dallas, Texas, but grew up in Sacramento California. After her parents divorce, and turbulence along with a focus on perfectionism from her mother led to Kelsey's anxiety. At age 14, Kelsey went to her first party where it felt good to drink.Kelsey took on a Technical Marketing Internship for 5 years while attending Arizona State University at Intel. Much like any college student, alcohol consumption continued. Over time, Kelsey began pushing people away due to her drinking until one day, she had the final straw. Kelsey put down the bottle, and as she was not out drinking all hours of the night on the weekends, she began waking up early, and had extra time, leading to her baking. This was the beginning of Doughp. Doughp started selling in San Francisco's Pier 39 and inside Oracle Park before expanding to The Las Vegas Strip, and now ships nationwide through strong e-commerce. In 2019, Kelsey went on Shark Tank (Season 10, Episode 22), and was told by Barbara Corcoran that Kelsey was: “The most sophisticated store owner she'd ever met in her life.” She did not get a deal, but has had massive growth and success since. Please enjoy this week's episode with the Queen of Cookie Dough, and the most sophisticated store owner Barbara Corcoran has ever met in her life, Kelsey Moreira. #Doughp4Hope:#Doughp4Hope - Reducing the stigmas around mental health and addiction, and donating heavily to non-profits and instilling crucial Mental Health Policies for their staff. This week I had the opportunity to sit down with author and news anchor, Courtney Friel. Courtney has been sober for 12 years after battling for years with her alcohol and substance abuse addictions. She courageously shares her journey with us to help others overcome out loud too. In Courtney's book, Tonight at 10: Kicking Booze and Breaking News, she gives her tell-all account of everything from paying off cops in Mexico after a cocaine bust to sober sexcapades to, ultimately, adventures in holistic healing to achieve deep inner peace. At every detour along the way, her sobering story stays packed with irreverent humor and hard-won optimism. What emerges is a front-line report on living life to the fullest, #KeepingItFriel and celebrating your inner party girl - even in sobriety. Courtney also hosted the podcast, Keepin' It Friel: Conversations on Recovery, where she has candid conversations with celebrities and media personalities about their recovery from addiction. Courtney hopes to inspire others struggling with addictions and show that recovery is possible, and that life can still be fun and rewarding without drugs or alcohol. Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
The Al-Anon principles have been a foundation of my Soul Recovery. In this episode I walk through Al-Anon's 'Just For Today' quotes. Each of these simple messages remind us that just for today we can make different choices in how we relate to those around us, and take better care of ourselves. This is my take on the quotes from my experiences and the Soul Recovery Journey. This week on the podcast I'm talking to Dr.'s Jim and Janice Prochaska. The Prochaska's are authors, speakers and consultants who have spent most of their professional lives studying the behavior or change. Together they founded their company Pro-Change Behavior Systems, which they sold in 2015. In 2016 they published, Changing to Thrive. Our conversation focused on the book as it applies to the top threats to your overall health and happiness. The book focuses on the five areas recognized by health professionals as the key to chronic diseases: Overeating/unhealthy diet, smoking, drinking alcohol and lack of exercise, and overarching above all of those is stress. "Changing behaviors is easier said than done. If you're like most of us, you have already made repeated attempts to change your lifestyle and improve your well-being without lasting success. You may attribute those failures to things like lack of motivation or the “wrong genes.” But it's more likely that you simply don't know how to change. In this groundbreaking book, James O. Prochaska, PhD, and Janice M. Prochaska, PhD, guide you through a six-stage process designed to help you assess your readiness to change, then tap the inner resources necessary to thrive physically, emotionally, and socially." Gospel Recording Artist Born in Daytona Beach FL, Danny Sullivan grew up in several homes from his mom, grandmother and aunts. At age of 8, Danny moved to San Antonio Texas. Rebellious from a young age, Danny was no stranger to hard work and creativity. By the 13 he worked as a cleaner, but his dream didn’t stop there. Though never staying in one place for long, In every one of the households there was a tight musical background that young Sullivan became immersed in. His first major influence in music was his Mother Alva, a singer at the Jam Club with the band the Universal. His other influence was his grandfather grandfather, a bass player as well as a trumpet player at Bethune Cookman university. Leading him to love Old School R&B and Luther Vandros. The first song he wrote as a child was a song dedicated to his mother, titled “I’m Sorry.” With Danny’s strong roots in r&b music and close influences, his gift was soon realized as a youth when he became a part of the adult choir of Triumphant Fellowship Church in 1993-1995. After that he went on to write music throughout 7th and 9th grade. The journey to stardom was hard, soon after the young crooner stopped singing in 1999 to 2013. But sports and singing was still a part of his life. Soon Danny came back to music as a freshman in college at cookman. One special song he wrote in 2013 was Pray. The greatest experience he's achieved in the entertainment industry is opening up for Lyfe Jennings on Valentine's Day 2018. Danny is anticipating the drop of his freshman EP “Pray” this 2021 spring. He’s currently in the studio now.

Dan came to Alcoholics Anonymous through the back door of Alanon. Once in AA recovery, he not only learned how to stay sober one day at a time, but also learned the value of service. Having served in various capacities, he shares his deep knowledge of the service structure of AA. GIVING UP INSANITY. . . where alcohol has been involved, we have been strangely insane.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 38Alcoholism required me to drink, whether I wanted to or not. Insanity dominated my life and was the essence of my disease. It robbed me of the freedom of choice over drinking and, therefore, robbed me of all other choices. When I drank, I was unable to make effective choices in any part of my life and life became unmanageable. I ask God to help me understand and accept the full meaning of the disease of alcoholism. If you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. Unintended consequences for secular AA is that atheists & agnostic groups and our meetings are zooming. How many more people are finding an attachment to AA while maintaining the authenticity of our secular worldview? No one, anywhere could visit one or two or three irreligious AA meetings a day - not a year ago anyway. The International Conference of Secular AA celebrates the science of addiction/recovery and folk-wisdom of AA with a 1/2 day virtual free mini-conference December 5, 2020. We kick off with Dr. George Koob, director of the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse & Alcoholism (NIAAA) talking to a packed house and an engaged audience. For slides of Dr. Koob's presentation, email us at secularaa@gmail.com In the second 1/2 hour we talk with our audience about diversity and AA and how zoom helps remove barriers of language, age, creed, gender, sexual orientation as well as the other barriers that are mitigated by virtual AA. How many people are finding recovery and how many stay clean and sober during COVID-19 For more recording from this and past ICSAA conferences, visit us @ https://aasecular.org To view Dr. Koob's slides, visit Rebellion Dogs Publishing HERE
I wouldn't be a transformational coach if it weren't for Caitlin Padgett. Caitlin, the founder of Redefining Sobriety and author of the Amazon bestseller Drink Less, Be More: How to Have a Great Night (and Life!) without Getting Wasted, is a certified coach who helps women change their lives by redefining their relationship with alcohol. She is also a retreat facilitator and is currently building a physical space in Mexico for digital entrepreneurs. Caitlin is one of my most favorite people, and it was from meeting her, hiring her, and attending her retreats that I was inspired to go to where I am today. In this episode, Caitlin and I explore how we can redefine sobriety and our relationship with alcohol. We discuss how she developed her approach to healing herself and how it became the catalyst for Redefining Sobriety. We underscore the importance of knowing the good and the bad in drinking alcohol and why understanding both matters. We also illustrate how alcohol is often used to serve a need and explain how meeting those needs in other ways can let us enjoy alcohol for its positive elements. “When we give ourselves permission for what we need and learn how we can meet those needs through other ways, then we stop needing alcohol to do the job for us.” - Caitlin Padgett This week on Life in the AND: Caitlin's personal journey with alcohol and drugs How Caitlin found her approach to healing in the AND Different people having different relationships with alcohol Helping people redefine their relationship with alcohol by helping them find their ANDs The importance of understanding the bad and the good when it comes to our relationship with alcohol Why redefining your relationship with alcohol means redefining your relationship with yourself How the social conditioning of women to forgo their desires influences their relationship with drinking How Caitlin takes care of herself to avoid turning to alcohol for its negative, numbing qualities Being in the AND by loving yourself The power of trusting in your intuition and why the AND space can feel risky and uncertain for many people Related Content: We Are All Walking Contradictions with Hayden Lee Connect with Caitlin Padgett: Redefining Sobriety Caitlin Padgett on Twitter Caitlin Padgett on Facebook Caitlin Padgett on Instagram BOOK: Drink Less, Be More: How to Have a Great Night (and Life!) without Getting Wasted Embrace Life in the AND Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Life in the AND, the podcast helping you embrace the AND in your life to cultivate more authenticity, creativity, inclusiveness, and love in every area of the world around you. Society conditions us to strive to be perfect — be thin, toned, ripped, trimmed, waxed, peeled, tan, liked, followed, friended, and then... we will be loved. There's a misconception that only women put themselves under a microscope when it comes to their bodies and their looks, but men do too.A new study points to a surprising connection between rising perfectionism in our culture and rising mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. The study, published in the American Psychological Association's Psychological Bulletin, suggests that young people are more obsessed with perfection than previous generations.Between 1989 and 2016, perfectionism has continued to rapidly increase in the US, with rates that parallel increased cases of depression and anxiety.Perfectionism is a combination of excessively high personal standards and overly critical self-evaluations.______To connect with Beau on Instagram (@beaubaker_)______If you or anyone you know is struggling with an addiction, depression, trauma, or sexual abuse, we've compiled a list of resources at https://secretlifepodcast.com. What newscast does not include something on tragedy caused by addiction? What extended family has not had someone with an addiction problem? What hospital is not one-third full of patients there due to addictive problems? Even though addiction is America’s number one health problem, our understanding of this disease is woefully inadequate. Kal Rissman has the ability to take the complex issues of addiction and make them understandable. This is a book that not only offers a non-judgmental understanding of addiction but offers concrete solutions and hope to those afflicted with the disease and those affected by the disease. “Kal Rissman has provided us with a blend of clinical expertise and pastoral perspective in exploring ways to meaningfully minister to those who are addicted. In this book he demonstrates both understanding of the operative issues and the realities involved in the healing process and guidance for family members. He does it with rare insight and delightful humor.” – Robert F. Maltzahn, Doctor of Ministry and Lutheran pastor for 54 years. “Kal Rissman has a remarkable gift for simplifying complex issues into easily understandable terms. He explains the multifaceted aspects of the baffling disease of addiction, describes current trends in recovery and offers insight and practical advise to help general and professional audiences understand addiction.” – Bruce Perkins, M.A., CDAC, LMFT, LSW, BRI - II, Intervention Specialist amazon.com/Knowledge-Power-Understanding-Overcoming-Addiction/dp/1478795018
Americans have a love of booze, and booze sure has a love of us at least according to all the flags they put in their commercials. But what most of us big city folks don't understand is that wide swaths of American, nearly 5% nation wide live under an oppressive regime of mandatory sobriety in the form of Dry Counties. Today we'll explore the who what where when why and huh of dry counties, sober states and teetotaling towns. Also featuring special guest David Lewis, and a discussion about his time undercover in Seattle's White Nationalist Movement, how they screen out people with mental health issues, and how Edger Allan Poe died of Voter Fraud
If alcohol was created today, the world would outlaw it, like we have many hard opiates and other narcotics. It is a single destructive force that is permeating all corners of modern society. The big problem is, most people have no idea how big the problem is in their own lives, as we drink to disconnect from the hard to hear truth. Most of us have a big problem in our lives, and we have no idea of the impact it is having on our happiness and our health.Remember, if you want to live without limits you need to do something today, so you can thank yourself tomorrow. Michellene first considered sobriety at 26 after it became clear that her relationship with alcohol was out of control. Despite attending a program and doing stepwork, she was easily dissuaded from an alcohol-free lifestyle and continued to drink through her 30s and 40s. Her alcohol use escalated when she became a parent, as she struggled with feelings of guilt and shame over not enjoying motherhood as much as she felt she "should'. Eventually Michellene realized that she didn't need to hit a low bottom to change her relationship with alcohol and she decided on January 1, 2017 to leave it behind for good.
Join Malcolm and Christian on a discussion about being a voyeur, the culture of alcoholism and touch on the topic of being Polyamorous. Please forgive us for the audio quality. It's our first time!
This episode is the second part to last week's episode, a continuation of the discussion of what to do when a spouse loses and parent, and how to help your spouse. In January of 2018, Jaimee's dad suddenly got sick and passed away.As soon as Jaimee's father passed away, she and her sisters were bombarded with decisions to make in regards to funeral homes, burial preferences, etc (14:53), leaving them with no time to grieve. Jaimee had no idea what to ask from Colton, her husband (17:08). But Colton, instead of asking Jaimee what she needed, simply showed up and was there for her, no questions. This episodes again reinforces the importance of respecting your spouse's feelings, as it was Colton's “turn” to be there for Jaimee. Being there for your spouse in the little things is essential, as Colton states (40:10).
Episode 5 of Build Better is Part 2 of a 3 Part Series on the opioid epidemic in the construction industry in New England. In this episode, Anastasia has a frank conversation with Jared Hesek and Pat Donovan, contractors at Karas & Karas Glass. Both men have struggled with addiction in their lives and are now in recovery, living healthy sober lives. They each share their journey to recovery and how they ended up working for Karas & Karas Glass.
Speaking up. Saying something. In one second lives can be altered or even lost due to one person's poor decision. The truth is we can be witness to these decisions and we have a choice to say something or stay silent. Self harming behaviors come in many forms (driving under the influence, abusing drugs, cutting, toxic relationships, etc.). I believe when we know someone is placing either themselves or others in harms way our words have the potential to make a difference. Sometimes our words have the ability to encourage someone to get help, support or alter their decisions. In today's episode we chat about how important it is to have a voice, to speak up and even to ask for help when needed. I share a bit of personal loss in my own life that could have been prevented with one voice. The Precious Gems Memorial (https://preciousgemsmemorial.com/) was formed in memory of our girls as well as conveying the message of the dangers of driving under the influence. I hope you have an opportunity to visit the site.
For some drinkers, it’s almost as reliable as the pounding headache and queasy stomach: the feeling of dread that follows a night of heavy imbibing. Your mind races as you frantically scroll through your text messages and Instagrams, replaying what you can remember from the night before. Did I say anything embarrassing? Did I offend anyone? Do my friends hate me now?For some, these doubts are just fleeting, run-of-the-mill nerves from letting their guard down after a few too many drinks the night before. But for others, these all-encompassing thoughts aren’t just regret from drinking too much or your mind’s effort to piece together a hazy night. The overwhelming feeling of nervousness after drinking too much is an experience common enough that Reddit has devoted threads to the term: “hangxiety.”Even model Chrissy Teigen, who is known for her silly, alcohol-fueled antics on social media, revealed that she's planning on cutting back on booze after “making kind of an ass” out of herself after drinking too much. “That feeling, there's just nothing like that. You feel horrible,” she told Cosmopolitan.Turns out, there’s a physiological reason for the anxiety you feel the morning after drinking.“I think of a hangover as, more or less, a mini-withdrawal from alcohol, and anxiety is one of the components,” George F. Koob, Ph.D., director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), tells SELF. Although not everyone experiences anxiety when they're hungover—some people feel just achy or have an upset stomach—Koob says it’s a relatively common symptom of a hangover. And for people who are already prone to anxiety, it’s even worse, sometimes lasting all day and disrupting your ability to function.Mainstream Mental Health: http://www.mainstreammentalhealth.org/

In the national month of recovery, Dr. Joe Craig and Nancy Herold offer a special interview with Jackie Endraske author of "Dudley the Gorilla", a book which Ms. Endraske crafted to assist children in coping with the family disease of alcoholism. While teaching in the public elementary school system Jackie began to notice the relationship between "Dudley" the large stuffed gorilla in her classroom and the ability of children to use it as a vehicle for healing and safe communication. She later formulated the book featuring a gorilla by the same name to expand the healing outside of her classroom, so that others could receive benefit as well. Tune in to this remarkable program which highlights the difference made by one person who followed the calling of her own sacred fire.
