Her journey underscores the importance of balancing social media use to foster deeper connections and a more fulfilling life. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://nosidebar.com/instagram-addiction/ Quotes to ponder: "I started being more present in those moments. I saw them for what they were, instead of what they could be on Instagram." "Consuming social media makes us feel like we're doing something, but after an hour of it, we're not left with much to show for it." "Life isn't meant to be lived by peering into everyone's proverbial backyards to see what they're up to. It's in our relationships. Our real-life experiences." Learn more about your ad choices. As we continue our Heart of it All Series for American Heart Month, I am so excited to welcome, Kim Christenson & Veloris Brooks, Volunteers & Heart Attack Survivors, American Heart Association About Kim: Kim Christenson suffered a major heart attack in September 2016. She had just finished up a training session with her friend, when she started to feel a burning in her chest and unimaginable pain in her neck, jaw and back. As the pain continued to worsen, she began to recognize that something was wrong and called 911. This is where her perfect chain of survival began. Because Kim did not hesitate one more second with calling 911, the paramedics came when they did. Because the paramedics are part of the American Heart Association's Mission Lifeline program, they were able to use Kim's EKG reading to alert the hospital that they needed to prepare a Cath lab for her. Because that Cath lab was ready upon arrival, doctors were able to determine that Kim was suffering from what is known as a widow maker's heart attack: 100% blockage in the left descending artery and perform emergency surgery. Kim coded 6 times as doctors worked to place a stent in her artery, so she is forever grateful for the help and care that she received that day and for the perfect chain of survival that has given her the opportunity to share her story with other women and spread awareness about the prevalence of heart attacks in women. About Veloris : At age 40, Veloris Brooks was misdiagnosed for 5 months, traveling to the ER several times, with various symptoms. It was eventually discovered that her left artery was 90% blocked and the right was 50% blocked. She had to undergo a triple bypass surgery to repair her heart. Veloris has been an active volunteer with the American Heart Association for the last few years; she is extremely passionate about the AHA's community impact and health equity work and uses her story as a testament to the importance of women advocating for themselves and their health. Listen in as Kim & Veloris' share their personal heart journeys, why it's so important to advocate for your health & always listen to your body.

It is no secret that I love to journal. If you are part of the 3 in 30 community on Instagram, then you might have seen a photo I posted recently of me with a tower of storage bins stacked almost as tall as I am...and every single one of them is filled with journals! When we moved a few years ago, the friends who came to help us were so confused as they carried in boxes. “Ummm here’s another box that is labeled ‘Rachel’s Journals!’” So I may have a bit of a journaling problem, but that is because it has been so helpful to me throughout my life to process my emotions and experiences. I have to admit, though, ever since becoming a mom, I have struggled to consistently make time to journal, even though I know how powerful it is. I just have very little alone time, and when I do, it feels too hard to try to put my pen to paper and make something coherent come out. On today’s episode, I am going to be interviewing someone who is possibly even more excited about journaling than I am (which is saying something), and she is going to give us lots of tips for how we can make journaling a part of our lives and why it is worth the effort. Kim Christianson is the co-founder of Loom Journals and Chief Product Officer at Promptly Journals, Loom's new home. She is a lifelong writer, journaler, and book lover, and she shares book recommendations for kids and adults, as well as articles on motherhood and mindfulness, on her blog, Talk Wordy to Me. On top of all of that, Kim is a mother of three and a personal friend of mine. I can’t wait for you to learn from her! *** THREE TAKEAWAYS FOR HOW & WHY TO JOURNAL 1. Write what you feel. Let go of the need to document all the events or have perfect spelling and grammar, and just free-write everything that's in your mind and heart. 2. Try Gratitude Journaling. This has been scientifically proven to improve mental AND physical health. 3. Start today. Don’t overthink it, and don’t feel like you have to go back in time and document all of the memories you’ve missed. Just start with today and move forward. *** Show Notes https://www.instagram.com/talkwordytome (Kim’s Instagram) http://www.talkingwordy.com (Kim’s Blog, Talk Wordy to Me) https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1527911&u=2088177&m=96687&urllink=&afftrack= (Kim's Company, Promptly Journals) https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1578981&u=2088177&m=96687&urllink=&afftrack= (Promptly Parent-Child Connection Journals by Loom) https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1550893&u=2088177&m=96687&urllink=&afftrack= (Promptly Gratitude Journal) http://3in30podcast.com/flecksofgold (Flecks of Gold Journal) Quote from Spencer W Kimball: “Your journal is your autobiography, so it should be kept carefully. You are unique, and there may be incidents in your experience that are more noble and praiseworthy in their way than those recorded in any other life. There may be a flash of illumination here and a story of faithfulness there; you should truthfully record your real self and not what other people may see in you. What could you do better for your children and your children’s children than to record the story of your life, your triumphs over adversity, your recovery after a fall, your progress when all seemed black, your rejoicing when you had finally achieved?...Get a notebook, a journal that will last through all time, and maybe the angels may quote from it for eternity. Begin today.” Many thanks to this episode’s sponsors! https://www.numakits.com/ (Numa, postpartum recover kits for new mothers). As a creative entrepreneur and just a person, there are a lot of things fighting for your attention. There’s family, marketing, sales, and [fill in your own list of tasks]. It doesn’t take long to feel overwhelmed by it all. Enter Kim Christensen from Talk Wordy to Me. She’s a freelance writer, journalist, and a book-loving mama. She mixes writing and mindfulness for a really unique perspective that every entrepreneur can benefit from. Kim started journaling at the age of five, which sparked a love for writing that she has held onto ever since. She’s the co-founder of Loom Journal which helps to inspire the parent-child connection. She also shares great book recommendations online and loves using social media and technology for good. In this episode you will learn: • A mindfulness definition for the everyday mom and creative • The benefit of journaling and putting pen to paper instead of only using technology • What any person can do to improve their writing skills • The importance of reading what you are writing out loud • Three places to look when you want to outsource your writing • The importance of not taking advantage of your friends’ skills and not letting them do the same to you • Tips on being a mindful entrepreneur • Tips to improve your content LINKS http://www.talkingwordy.com/about/ Find Kim on Instagram Loom Journals BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS • Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert • The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle by Steven Pressfield • Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries by Kory Stamper • Hello, My Name Is Awesome: How to Create Brand Names that Stick by Alexandra Watkins QUOTES One thing that I’ve learned is that ‘balance’ can become just another form of perfectionism, and we’re not seeking balance necessarily. We’re seeking to understand that things will be imbalanced and just trusting ourselves to put our effort and time into the things that are important to us at that time. Because what’s important will change. When you talk about feeling balanced, what you’re really feeling is acceptance of your life being out of balance. We have to become ok with letting some things go. We can do anything we want, but we can’t do everything. Mindfulness isn’t this new trend even though it’s a buzzword now. Mindfulness is in each of us already. It’s not like it’s some new thing you have to learn… it’s just refamiliarizing yourself with yourself. And with the things that help you slow down and feel like yourself and feel whole. It’s just bringing back awareness into what you do and what you think. When we are engaging with technology we are disconnecting from ourselves, intuition, and the people around us. So mindfulness teaches us to be fully present. Mindfulness can go a long way to living the life you want instead of letting life just happen to you. In order to improve your writing, you write. That’s all. It doesn’t even matter where you start or what you write. It’s not about being a good writer or not. It’s about expressing yourself. So, if you can be true to what those feelings are and expressing those, that’s all you need to be a writer. The grammar and all that stuff, that’s so secondary to being a good writer. It’s just being unafraid to express your true self and your true thoughts. Just be you. People can tell when you’re being you or when you’re being a brand in the boring salesy sense of the word. Don’t take advantage of your friends who have a skill set just because they love it and are succeeding in it. Be okay with imperfection and start before you are ready and before you think you have it all together. Starting is the hardest part. You just have to start where you are with what you have and give what you can. It doesn’t have to be everything.
“If you’re going to be someone who is interested in intimacy, you have to be accepting of your body as it is. If you’re going to be capable of doing that, you have to forge a kind of meaningful self acceptance and self compassion.” Good body image = good sex. Bad body image = bad sex. It’s really that simple. Because it’s never about our bodies. It’s about how we are measuring our self-worth and the meaning we have placed on our bodies as an extension of our sense of self. And that measurement affects all areas our lives, including our love lives. Want to know more about why that is and how to change it? Listen to my podcast interview with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife on how we can get in better tune with what really matters—our minds and our souls—and by extension, improve both our body image AND our intimacy. How do you want your loved ones to remember you? Your face illuminated by the light of a screen? Of course not. None of us do. But we are ALL guilty of letting our devices distract us from what is most important. If you've struggled from time to time with balancing your technology use, if you often feel sad, jealous, lonely, or apathetic, and if your devices are acting more as a task master than a tool, then it's time to refocus. In today's podcast, two guests (Kim Christenson and Jamie Cook) and I share how to recognize when your technology use is out of control, and how to turn it back into a tool for good. Kim Christenson is one of the most talented women I know: she is a passionate writer, journalist, novelist, "namer," actress, voice-over artist, yoga instructor, social media queen, and mother to three young children. She radiates such light and positivity! Kim carefully uses her time spent on the internet to build up others and encourage them to be brave, evident in her incredible interviews of women who are shooting for the stars in her Dream Big Series. We talk about Kim's growing up years as one of many children in a blended family, and how she learned from a young age the great importance in finding passions to reach for that help you feel of value. Kim is a dreamer and she seems to fearlessly go after one thing to the next; but it might surprise you some of the hard lessons she had to learn, including her regret over letting perfectionism and the trap of comparison stagnate her pursuits. Kim also speaks about some failures she has faced, as well as some tough choices she had to make about when to let go of one dream in order to make room for another. From her, we learn that there is wisdom in evaluating what you are capable of doing, but then daring to say no to many things so you can more fully say yes to the pursuits that are of the greatest value in your life. Finally, Kim shares what it looks like to dream big, and it involves taking one little step at a time. (This is for all you paralyzed dreamers out there!) You can find Kim at her wonderful, real, I'm-with-you blog, Talk Wordy to Me, and her Instagram account of the same name, here. Song credit: "Sweet Promise" by Nicolai Heidlas
