Die Arctic Monkeys sind die größte Rock'n'Roll-Band unserer Zeit – und das, obwohl sie seit über zehn Jahren keinen Rock'n'Roll mehr machen. Also zumindest auf Platte. „Do I Wanna Know... all about the Arctic Monkeys? Wer diese Frage mit „Hell Yeah!“ beantwortet, ist bei dieser Folge genau richtig. In Episode #103ArcticMonkeys kommt mit Philipp Kressmann ein absoluter Indie-Experte und Fan der ersten Stunde vorbei. Alex Turner, Jamie Cook und Nick O'Malley aus der Band erzählen von ihren großen Alben. Jetzt überall, wo es Podcasts gibt.

Today's guest is Chris Killourhy, Managing director of QBE Re. The reinsurance market has been through some comprehensive changes in the last 12 months and so has QBE Re. In this podcast we delve right into the evolving appetites and re-vamped strategy at this well-respected medium-sized reinsurer. In the past QBE Re was viewed as a highly competent and nimble trader in the markets in which it operated. Today it is evolving into a player that is looking to become a long-term across-the-board partner for the right kind of cedant. Chris hopes that this strategy will deliver a growing, balanced portfolio and a more predictable and less volatile level of earnings than in the past. Chris is a qualified actuary and has had a really varied career to date, which has already included multiple roles within the wider QBE group. But, unlike the apocryphal actuary to be found as the butt of hundreds of insurance jokes, he lays out his stall with great eloquence and his ideas on how to build a more balanced portfolio make for fascinating listening. Listen on for many wise insights and a clear vision for how a mid-sized reinsurer should navigate this market and how it can best compliment and benefit from its ownership by a major global insurance parent group. NOTES: Chris refers to a Jamie. That's Jamie Cook, QBE Re's Chief Partnership Officer. LINKS: We thank our naming sponsor AdvantageGo: https://www.advantagego.com/

Top Water, Energy, Stocks and Funds Now the first article I want to review concerns the water industry — an industry receiving great attention from ethical and sustainable investors. The article's title is 5 'Blue Economy' Stocks and Funds. It's written by Nellie S. Huang and published by Kiplinger. Ms. Huang writes, quote… “The blue economy represents all of the dollars spent to improve the economic growth, health and livelihood of ocean and coastal zone ecosystems… ‘You can't have a healthy planet without a healthy ocean,' says Louise Heaps, the head of sustainable blue economy at the global nonprofit WWF, in London… (The article continues)…We recommend two funds that focus on water sustainability. We also found the stocks of three companies doing interesting things that will help us use water more efficiently or that go some way toward stemming water pollution. (The funds and stocks are…) 1) Fidelity Water Sustainability Fund (FLOWX) (Is) a new, actively managed fund, focuses on firms working on solving the world's water crisis… Industrial machinery is the fund's top industry weighting at a quarter of assets. It's followed by water utilities (17%) and electronic equipment and instruments (15%), as well as 11% of assets each in building products and industrial conglomerates. Roper Technologies (ROP) and American Water Works (AWK) are top holdings. (The fund) has returned 7.9% over the past 12 months. 2) Invesco Water Resources ETF (PHO) Invesco has three water-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs), but we favor Invesco Water Resources ETF… because it tracks a Nasdaq index that includes companies creating products designed to conserve and purify water. Invesco Water Resources ETF is similar to Fidelity Water Sustainability Fund in that its largest asset concentrations are in machinery (27%) and water utilities (20%). However, it also has a substantial 16% invested in life sciences tools and services. Waters Corp. (WAT) and American Water Works (AWK) top the portfolio. The fund has gained 9.4% over the past 12 months. 3) Tetra Tech (TTEK) Is an engineering and consulting firm has big roles in many sustainable areas, including water management. For instance, the company helped a Kentucky sewer system authority save $200 million from 2006 to date by building a high-tech, real-time system to monitor and manage sewer system overflow during periods of heavy rain… Stifel analyst Noelle Dilts recommends the blue economy stock. ‘We believe the company is well positioned to benefit from strong secular drivers in water and environmental services, with 85% [or more] of revenues tied to these markets,' she says. Analysts expect the company… to deliver annual earnings growth of 9% in 2022 and 8% in 2023. 4) Danimer Scientific (DNMR) The ocean is home to five plastic islands of floating trash; one is roughly twice the size of Texas. Danimer Scientific could help reduce that. It is developing a kind of plastic that is 100% biodegradable and compostable… Danimer Scientific… had its initial public offering in December 2020. The company has a $409 million market value, no profits and just $53 million in revenue over the past 12 months… Jeffries analyst Laurence Alexander rates the stock a Buy, saying that 2022 should be a ‘validation year,' when leading brands adopt its plastic. It already has a number of well-known customers, including PepsiCo (PEP) and Walmart (WMT). 5) Deere (DE) Excessive use of fertilizer can run off into waterways, harming plants, animals and habitats, not to mention water quality. ‘If we could just reduce the use of fertilizer, that would have the biggest positive impact on water,' says Putnam's Collins. Deere's ‘See & Spray Select' technology, installed on a fertilizer sprayer, uses camera technology to identify color differentiation in the field so that only weeds get sprayed with herbicides. The system reduces herbicide use by 77%, on average… Deere has its share of eco-bugaboos, but it's a leader in precision agriculture – technology that helps increase crop yields and minimize the use of fertilizers, two key environmental pluses… Credit Suisse's Jamie Cook rates the stock Outperform.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Top Water, Energy, Stocks and Funds Now back to familiar territory with this article titled These 2 Renewable Energy Stocks Are Too Cheap to Ignore. By Neha Chamaria and Rekha Khandelwal on fool.com. Here are some quotes from the authors on their picks. “1) Neha Chamaria recommends Brookfield Renewable Partners (NYSE: BEP) (The) stock is finally showing some signs of life after languishing in 2021, but there's tremendous upside potential left in the stock at current prices… Brookfield Renewable generated record funds from operations (FFO) in its third quarter, but the market paid no heed. I strongly believed it deserved better and even picked Brookfield Renewable as the only stock I'd buy in 2022 -- if I had to pick one… Brookfield Renewable's total pipeline is… almost three times the size of its existing operational capacity, and it is this pipeline that should set Brookfield Renewable on the next growth path. For now, the company expects to grow funds from operations per unit by 10% or more through 2026… That should translate into regular annual-dividend increases which could be as high as 9% each year. Now combine that with Brookfield Renewable's dividend yield of 3.4% and the potential gains from reinvesting those dividends, and you could well be on your way to making a fortune if you add this renewable dividend growth stock to your portfolio. 2) Rekha Khandelwal likes NextEra Energy Partners (NYSE: NEP) The recent correction in renewable energy stocks due to concerns relating to overvaluation and rising interest rates has contributed to the fall in NextEra Energy Partners' stock. However, the company's fundamentals remain rock-solid… NextEra Energy Partners has certain key advantages over its competitors. To begin with, it is backed by a top utility, NextEra Energy (NEE). (It) has a huge and diversified portfolio of renewable energy assets, and it's been in the renewables business for more than 30 years… NextEra Energy's investment-grade balance sheet helps it raise funds at comparatively lower costs than its smaller peers. NextEra Energy Partners announced a distribution of $0.71 for the fourth quarter, which represents a sequential increase of 3.3%. On an annualized basis, the Q4 distribution grew 15% year over year. NextEra Energy Partners expects a 12% to 15% per-year growth in its distributions through 2024. All in all, this is one renewable energy (stock) that you would surely want to buy right away.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Top Water, Energy, Stocks and Funds Continuing on the theme of renewable energy is this article titled Technical Analyst Sees Lots of Upside Potential in This Alternative Energy Stock. Found on investorideas.com. Source: Clive Maund. Here are some quotes. “Things are going well for solar stock UGE International Ltd. (UGE:TSX.V; UGEIF:OTCQB), which looks like a buy here after what is believed to be prolonged base building since it hit bottom last June after a reactive phase… There is plenty of upside potential from here, as made clear by the position of the MACD indicator.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Top Water, Energy, Stocks and Funds Now to one of the favorite companies by analysts featured in these podcasts. It's covered in this article titled Why Enphase Energy Stock Soared in February. It's by Howard Smith and again found on fool.com. Here are some quotes from Mr. Smith. “The stock of solar system technology company Enphase Energy (NASDAQ: ENPH) had a strong month in February. Two separate catalysts were really responsible for the gains, resulting in an overall jump of 18.7% for the month, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. First, the company reported its fourth-quarter and full-year 2021 results on Feb. 8, prompting a big single-day pop in the stock. The second catalyst wasn't company-specific. Many solar and other alternative-energy stocks have soared in the final days of February as oil prices jumped on the backdrop of war in Ukraine and geopolitical uncertainty. After having given up some gains made after its strong earnings report, (Its) shares of Enphase soared almost 32% in the last five days of the month. Enphase reported record revenue of $412.7 million for its fourth quarter, bringing full year 2021 revenue to $1.38 billion, jumping nearly 80% over the 2020 total of $774.4 million. After generating $92.7 million in cash flow from operations, and spending $300 million in share repurchases in December, Enphase also ended the year with $1 billion in cash on its balance sheet… For investors, the main concern with Enphase should be its valuation. At its recent market cap of $21.2 billion, shares are trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of almost 150. While continued strong growth should bring that down over the next several years, it's an investment that comes with plenty of risk should there be any stumbles in the company's growth rate.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Why Digital Realty Trust is a leading Socially Responsible Dividend (DLR) stock Looking for dividends, then see this article titled Why Digital Realty Trust is a leading Socially Responsible Dividend (DLR) stock. It's authored by Eleon on goodwordnews.com. Now some quotes from the author. “Digital Realty Trust Inc (Symbol: DLR) has been named one of the best socially responsible dividend stocks by Dividend Channel, meaning a stock with above average results. ‘Dividend rank' statistics, including a high yield of 3.5%, as well as being recognized by leading asset managers as being a socially responsible investment… According to ETF Channel's ETF Finder, Digital Realty Trust Inc is a member of the iShares USA ESG Select (SUSA) ETF, representing 0.19% of the fund's underlying holdings, which holds $7,077,077 in DLR shares. The annualized dividend paid by Digital Realty Trust Inc is $4.64/share, currently paid in quarterly installments… DLR operates in the REIT sector.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Recommendations Related to Australian Stocks 1. Title 2 exciting ASX growth shares for March 2022 26 February 2022 (fool.com.au). By Tristan Harrison. Quote “Australian Ethical (ASX: AEF) is investing significantly for growth and is benefiting from rapidly growing FUM; (and) Airtasker's (ART) platform gives it a high gross profit margin and it is growing quickly, particularly in the US and UK.” End quote. 2. Title 2 popular ETFs you need to know (fool.com.au). The ETFs are BetaShares Asia Technology Tigers ETF (ASX: ASIA) and Betashares Global Sustainability Leaders ETF (ASX: ETHI) ------------------------------------------------------------- Ending Comment Well, these are my top news stories with their stock and fund tips -- for this podcast: “Top Water, Energy, Stocks and Funds.” To get all the links, stock symbols, or to read the transcript of this podcast -- and more -- go to investingforthesoul.com/podcasts and scroll down to this episode. This month we caught up with Dave Mag and delve into a life filled with angling. Dave spent years in the limelight of carp angling, catching some of the most prestigious carp of our generation. However life is different these days, Dave's angling is very much on his own terms, with a young family and very busy job carp fishing often consists of short sessions, fitting in around life but that's not stopped him catching more incredible carp. A naturally gifted angler with a seriously impressive album. Dave does it his own way and catches loads. We've also got Jamie Cook back on to chat about some new projects being run by the Angling Trust that are well worth getting involved in.
We're joined this month by John Beecher or "The Cabbie" as some may know him. John isn't usually one for sharing his stories so it was a pleasure to have him on the podcast. We chat about the big Chertsy carp, the Royal plus many of the old Horton Church lake jewels. John has caught loads of big carp, at times using different tactics to most. Many a time using just one rod. Plus we have the pleasure of Jamie Cook from the Angling Trust back on as we discuss the risks of Natural England's seemingly Anti Carp agenda!

How did Linchhill get stocked? where did those special fish come from? fish like Bitemark and the late Petals? History’s important in all walks of life, having an appreciation of our carp fishing heritage always proves just how many big carp are around today in comparison. Our guests this month are two men on a mission to document the history of Oxford carp are Paul Harris and Geoff Adams. These guys have lived and breathed the Oxford scene since kids and have now started to collate it’s rich carp fishing history into a book that will document a part of the county that is now a magnet for so many carp anglers. We also have Jamie Cook from the Angling Trust, we talk about a really important campaign linked to water companies discharging raw sewage into rivers and costal waters over 400,000 last year, a 37% increase on the prior year!
Brewer and winemaker Phil Sexton is a legendary figure in the Australian drinks industry. He founded Matilda Bay Brewing Company, Australia's first craft brewery, in 1983.After Foster's acquired Matilda Bay, Phil went on to co-found arguably the country's most influential craft brewery, Little Creatures. He established Margaret River winery Devil's Lair in 1981, and in 1997 came his foray into cooler climate wines in the Yarra Valley, where he created the Innocent Bystander and Giant Steps brands.Phil has had a very eventful 18 months. In October 2019 he shocked the brewing world when he announced he would relaunch Matilda Bay from his base in Healesville, partnering with the brand's current owner, Carlton & United Breweries. And in August 2019, he announced the sale of Giant Steps to US company Jackson Family Wines. The deal follows his successful exits from Devil's Lair, sold to Southcorp – now known as Treasury Wine Estates – in 1996; Little Creatures, which floated on the stock exchange in 2005 before being wholly acquired by Lion; and Innocent Bystander, which he sold to Brown Brothers in 2016.In a long overdue interview on the Drinks Adventures podcast, Phil updates us on the goings on at the reborn Matilda Bay, as well as Giant Steps, post the sale.We touch on some of the earlier chapters in his career and get his thoughts on recent industry developments such as the sale of fellow Yarra winery Oakridge to Woolworths subsidiary Endeavour Group, plus the demise of his former employer in the US, the pioneering Portland brewery Bridgeport. And the conversation goes down a few other rabbit holes that I hope you enjoy exploring as much as I did. There's a few earlier episodes of Drinks Adventures that I recommend you listen to after today's episode, if you haven't already. In Season 1, we met Janice McDonald, who worked alongside Phil at Matilda Bay, Devil's Lair and Little Creatures, so that's essential listening for another perspective on those early years. And in Season 2, our documentary on Stone & Wood Brewing Company, whose co-founders Brad Rogers, Jamie Cook and Ross Jurisich were previously involved with Matilda Bay.First off in today's episode, I asked Phil how he came to the decision to sell Giant Steps, a company revered for its single vineyard expressions of pinot noir and chardonnay.
Bazil was one of the most iconic Carp to have swam in our opinion and it's no surprise that anglers would dedicate years and years of time to pursue this special carp. One such angler was Steve Fudge aka Fudgey. Steve dedicated 96 nights in pursuit of Bazil and this is his tale to tell. We also discuss pre baiting edges, sponsorships and have the pleasure to welcome Jamie Cook back on from the Angling Trust to tell us whats been happening in his world since night fishing was back on the agenda.
Mark Bryant is back with story like no other, a four year quest in search of a few special carp, a story that Mark has never told or ever published. Hiding in bushes, baiting at midnight, buried treasure and wrestling with badgers are just a few of the hurdles that make this one an extra special episode, one not to be missed. Marks personal fishing is rarely spoken about but rest assured, when he’s on it, his focus and commitment is incredible. Sit tight as this one will have you on edge of your seats. One mans quest into the unknown...... Plus we have Jamie Cook back on to give us an update on all things Angling Trust related.
If you're a fan of these Sheffield sweethearts, this is a must-listen AvA episode. Buckle-up, this one is a four out of five. LinksAnnie Mac interview with Alex Turner"Why Arctic Monkeys' Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino Is a Masterpiece"Nardwuar vs. Arctic MonkeysDua Lipa covers Arctic Monkeys Do I Wanna Know? in the Live LoungeFirst-Ever Monster Jam Truck front flip - Lee O'Donnell
This month Mike takes the opportunity to delve into Mark's life as he talks through his struggles with school and his football career. But from the struggles came a gritted determination to make Baitworks a success. The struggle was real. Plus we have Jamie Cook back on from the Angling Trust with a monthly round up of whats happening in his world. We chat through the next steps for angling and discuss a really important campaign that the Trust have got involved in over in Kent, where the Kent Wildlife Trust are trying to evict a long standing fishing club from waters they control!

Our longest podcast to date. This month we have Jamie Cook as our special guest. A passionate angler who takes us on a trip down memory lane to a time when he was chasing some well known carp of today, fish like the Baby Black. Mark and Mark discuss the biggest carp in the UK and also touch on the challenges of fishing lakes that have Otters hunting on them. Plus we find out how Mark once got stuck in a cat flap!

Keith Arthur welcomes Jamie Cook aboard The Strange Boat. Jamie is CEO of The Angling Trust and Fish Legal and has a great track record fishing himself. The son of a mad keen coarse all-rounder Jamie learned to fish on the Kennet, Thames and surrounding gravel pits. His experience developed into specimen hunting with roach his favourite species. After a brief foray into match angling, he turned his focus to carp fishing and has spent a decade targeting large carp across the South of England. Jamie explains how angling became the first sport back after the initial Coronavirus lock down and what The Angling Trust is doing for fishing across the UK.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/strange-boat. In this episode, how an ex-punk rocker turned corporate brewer left it all behind to start one of Australia’s most successful craft breweries. “We want to be that brewery that adds massive value to every single one of our stakeholders.” Jamie Cook is the co-founder of Stone & Wood, one of one of Australia’s most loved and awarded craft beer brands. Founded in Byron Bay in 2008, Stone & Wood exceeded annual production of 12 million litres in just its tenth year of operations … to put that into perspective, only one other beer has come close to this feat in recent history. In this generous chat Jamie Cook shares, where the idea for Stone & Wood came from, how he and his partners got the original idea to market, how they financed the business in those early days (sold the business 6-months in, only to buy it back!), the importance of branding and more... So this episode got off to kind of a rough start, but the mistake I made in calling Brian Watson, Brian Hamilton was actually a blessing in disguise. Why? Well, because I had his name wrong (the Good George Brewery is in Hamilton, hence my error), my research didn't turn yup much about his friggen amazing career...this guy is an OG, right up there with names like Dave Bonighton, Brad Rogers, Phil Sexton, Ross Jurisich, Brendan Varis, Jamie Cook, Chuck Hahn and so on...So yeah, I enjoyed discovering more about Brians adventures, just like I hope you will...in fact, I enjoyed it so much I may just have to invite him back for more story time!We of course talk a lot about the Good George Brewery story, but in typical Beer Healer Interviews style, there are a few detours and we cover a lot of ground covered in this 45 minute session, including:His link to a few of my home town breweries; His experience as an international beer judge and brewery commissioner;Being invited to Russian Rivers birthday party;Launching Vonu in Fiji; His infamous Squealers that exploded on supermarket shelves; andMaking Covid whisky from returned beer kegsI really enjoyed this chat, and look forward to the next one!

This week we speak with with Ben Summons and Nick Boots. Over the last few months Stone & Wood founder Jamie Cook has retired from the business and Ben Summons has stepped up from managing director of Stone & Wood into the role of CEO of the Fermentum group of companies, the overarching business. Nick Boots has in turn been promoted from Stone & Wood's head of sales to General Manager. The changing of the guard comes at a significant time for the business, as the industry faces crowding at the smaller end of the industry, and takovers at the larger end. Overseas, the largest craft breweries have run into headwinds, the craft beer segment is fragmented with a rapid proliferation of styles and competition from other categories and new and emerging categories such as hard seltzer. As you'll here both Ben and Nick have extensive careers in and out of the beer industry, including time at CUB overlapping with founders Brad Rogers, Jamie Cook and Ross Jurisich. All in all there was a lot to talk about including the origins of craft beer and whether Stone & Wood represented a lost opportunity for CUB, the opportunities and challenges facing Stone & Wood, and the challenges they face as the next generation of managers, the changing beer market and staying disciplined in in a time of change. This conversation is a very deep dive into the industry and the stories behind it as we chat with Doug Donelan, who recently retired from his role as CEO at New Zealand Hops. After a varied career, that included falling in love with home brew, Doug got his start as an apprentice brewer under Chuck Hahn at the original Hahn Brewery in 1990. He saw the triumphs and the challenges that saw the business eventually go into receivership before being purchased by Tooheys. Deciding to stay on Doug worked in product development roles before being tapped on the shoulder to re-join Chuck as he launched what we now know as the James Squire brand at the Malt Shovel Brewery. He worked there in the early days of Australia's craft brewery renaissance before spending the last 13 years as head of New Zealand hops. In a similar vein to our chats with Jamie Cook and Phil Sexton, this is a wide ranging chat the looks at the modern evolution of beer and the rise of craft brewing, as well as the development of the New Zealand hop industry. It is a fascinating chat, and one that could have gone on and on. Enjoy the conversation. Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt. Beer is a Conversation is our weekly sit down with some of the people who make the beer industry the interesting and dynamic industry it is and through these conversations we dig a little deeper into the stories behind the business of beer and brewing. And this week's conversation is a deeper dive on steroids as we chat with Stone & Wood's Jamie Cook. Jamie is no stranger to Radio Brews News, if just as the namesake for the Cook limit. But more importantly he has been a frequent guest through his roles as a founder of Stone & Wood, and of the Craft Beer Industry Association and now Chair of the Independent Brewers Association board. For all of those conversations, we haven't talked much about Jamie himself. Last week Jamie turned sixty and this week he has issued a statement saying that many years ago he made a promise to himself that he would use that milestone to reset his priorities to give more time to himself, his family and adventure whilst winding back from a day to day working life. As such he has announced that he will be stepping back from his role as CEO of Fermentum - the overarching business behind Stone & Wood - retiring to the role of Chair of the Fermentum Board in December this year. Jamie has had a long history in the brewing industry, and his career has spanned some of the most interesting periods of Australian brewing...before he even co-founded Stone & Wood. If you are fascinated by brewing history and the evolution of the current craft beer revival, or if you are a student of the business of brewing, this is a fascinating conversation with one of the giants of the Australian industry. Jamie Cook is the founder and CEO of Hexr, a London-based company behind what may be the safest bicycle helmet ever created. For decades, there has been almost no innovation in foam cycling helmets, beyond them becoming more aerodynamic. After five years of research and testing at University College London and Oxford University – and more than 3,200 prototypes – Hexr’s 3D-printed helmets began shipping earlier this month. The firm’s head-scanning app ensures you get a perfect fit.
During the recent Good Beer Week in Melbourne, the Cryer Malt trade hub at BeerDeluxe was once again a focus for the brewing industry with a number of important trade discussions taking place. Thanks to Kegstar, Brews News was able to be there to record some of these panels and we are proud to present these discussions. This panel hosted by co-founder of Totem Marketing Zoe Ottaway, was an informative discussion on product labelling, the legal requirements, the importance of adhering to these standards and the way in which ABAC treats product labelling complaints. We look at the issues from a retail perspective with Endeavour Drinks Diarmaid O'Mordha. You also hear Steve 'Hendo' Henderson formerly of Brew Cult who gives first hand experience of potentially falling foul of labelling standards and how an ABAC investigation works. And also from Jamie Cook, the Chair of the Independent Brewers Association who goes into detail about just how the the IBA can assist existing and potential brewing companies to comply with what can often be a daunting and challenging exercise. Last week saw Good Beer Week celebrated in Melbourne, and the Cryer Malt trade hub at BeerDeluxe was once again a focus for the brewing industry with a number of important trade discussions taking place. Among the panels was an update from the Independent Brewers Association. Apart from being a general update from the IBA to its members, this panel stood out because of some of the key data that was revealed. It has always been hard to quantify the size and growth of the craft and independent beer industry but the IBA has pulled together some meaningful data that gives us a clearer picture of where the craft industry sits in Australia. This week on Beer is a Conversation we catch up with IBA Chair, Jamie Cook, to dig a little deeper into the numbers A PowerPoint presentation was prepared for the presentation and you can download it here. We also discuss the upcoming BrewCon and The Indies, and the key dates are listed below. Indies entries open – 24th May 2019 Brewcon tickets go on sale – 7th June 2019 Indies entries close – 30th June 2019 Indies judging –1st – 2nd September 2019 Brewcon and Trade Show commences – 4th September 2019 Indies Awards night – 5th September 2019 Brews News' coverage of the Trade Hub was made possible by Kegstar: We own kegs, so you don't have to. We kick off season two of the Drinks Adventures podcast with a in-depth look at the brewery founded in Byron Bay, Australia in 2008, Stone & Wood Brewing Company.Stone and Wood celebrated its tenth anniversary last year and I started covering drinks as a journalist not long after Stone & Wood started brewing. As such, I've followed their evolution very closely over the years, reporting on their key milestones along the way, which has given me a lot of insight into their business and some excellent resources to draw upon in putting this story together. But in fact, this story isn't only about Stone & Wood, it's also a bit of a look at the current state of play in Australian independent brewing, an industry sector that is in the midst of an unprecedented boom that is not without its challenges. The Drinks Adventures podcast is proudly supported by our friends at Bintani, Australia’s leading supplier of ingredients for the brewing and distilling industries.Bintani has all the ingredients you need, and they have experts in all categories on the team, so they understand how ingredients work together like no one else in Australia.NB: Since recording this documentary earlier this year, Alexis Roitman has departed her role as CEO of the Independent Brewers Association. We wish her the best of luck. This episode would not have been possible without the generosity of the organisations that gave me permission to use their audio.Thank you to the Telstra Business Awards, Finance News Network and Matt Kirkegaard at Australian Brews News. Thanks also to the wonderful music acts that cleared their tracks for use on the show: From London, Asad Rizvi AKA Silverlining; From New York City, No Regular Play and from my home town of Sydney, We Lost The Sea.If you watched the recent Ricky Gervais series After Life on Netflix, you may have heard We Lost The Sea's tune A Gallant Gentleman feature on the soundtrack.Ricky is a big We Lost The Sea fan and I'm privileged to be able to use that same track on this episode of the podcast. And thank you to Dave Robertson for his massive efforts in mixing and editing this episode and all episodes in Season Two.If you enjoyed this episode on Stone & Wood, go back to Season One, Episode Three and check out my interview with Janice McDonald, who was the first head brewer at Little Creatures. It'll give you some fantastic insights into Australian independent brewing in the decades prior to Stone & Wood's arrival.Thank you to the companies that have sponsored the Drinks Adventures podcast as of this year. The support of our major partner Bintani Australia and other brands makes the show viable, so I'm very grateful for it and I'm sure our listeners are too.I know some listeners enjoyed the weekly giveaways we had throughout season one. Links to podcasts mentioned in this episode: 3 in 30 Podcast, episode 16: "How to Be the Mom You Are Instead of the Mom You Think You Should Be" The Women With Fire, episode 51: "Jamie Cook of Wander and Scout" One Mother's Day, Lori Brescia's kids came home from church with questionnaires they had filled out about her. Under "Favorite Food," they had answered "hot dogs," "pizza," "macaroni and cheese." Under favorite color, they wrote, "orange," "blue," "red." The same pattern emerged for her favorite activities and even hair color: they had no clue. Lori fed them lunch so they'd have some stamina, and sat her family down in a row on the couch, including her husband. "Today is Mother's Day," she said, "and I can't help noticing that these questionnaires you filled out today are really about you, and not me. I am not just an extension of you. I'm my own person." She spent the next 45 minutes telling them stories about her life. She paced up and down the room, explaining what makes her laugh, what makes her happy, what makes her sad. She told stories from when she was a child and when she taught high school. She shared what she loves about being a mom, but also all the other things she loves to do. They laughed together at the funny stories, and Lori even cried a few times talking about some of her more emotional experiences. At one point, one son said, "This is all about you, mom." "Exactly," she replied, and kept going. That Mother's Day has itself become part of the Brescia family lore. They laugh about it every year. But you better believe those kids are really good at filling out those questionnaires now. Mahatma Ghandi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Many mothers are really good at the "lose yourself" part and the "service" part, but forget that the goal in the first half of the sentence is to "find yourself." Depending on how you approach it, motherhood can help you develop, discover, and refine who you really are, or it can usurp your identity until you define yourself only by that role. Then when the kids leave the house, they leave you with an identity crisis, no discernible hobbies or interests, and a lot of time on your hands. Last summer, I hiked my first 14er (a mountain above 14,000 feet) with my husband. Wading through wildflowers and streams, burning my lungs and my legs, and looking out at endless peaks and valleys, I felt a sudden explosion of joy and thought, "This is who I am." I almost needed to reintroduce myself to this person. In high school, I defined myself by mountains. Not a week went by that I wasn't fishing in them, hiking in them, rock climbing in them, or at least gazing at them with wonder. Now here I was living in Colorado and maybe making it up to the mountains every other month. That day on Mt. Harvard made me think about the other things that define who I am. Yes, I am a mother. And that is a huge part of my identity. But I am also a writer, reader, pianist, singer, chef, cyclist, dancer, hiker, climber, tennis player, teacher, public speaker, and a believer in God. I've gone through long periods of time where I haven't done some of these things, but they're still part of who I am. I have also spent a lot of my life feeling like an imposter. When I discovered rock climbing in high school, I didn't call myself a climber, even though I went once a week. I wasn't an expert, so I didn't think I could claim the title. For years as a young mother, I didn't call myself a writer, even though I had worked as a professional writer for years, because I wasn't currently writing. I didn't claim to be a singer, even though that is a huge part of my everyday life, because I rarely performed and because it sounded like bragging. But I've come to believe that you can and should claim anything you love and that defines who you are, no matter how skilled or professional you are. Even someone who can't carry a tune should be able to claim that they're a singer if they love it and do it a lot. This especially applies to motherhood. Who doesn't feel like an imposter when they bring that first baby home? Suddenly you're in charge of this needy little creature and you're supposed to have all the answers. Little by little, we gain the required skills, but we get that title, Mom, right away. At every stage, with every new child, I feel imposter syndrome again. I don't know what the heck I'm doing. But I am Mom, and I claim that title wholeheartedly. It's also OK not to claim stuff. I am not a crafter, painter, stylist, shopper, interior designer, or aesthetician. I don't decorate my house for any holiday besides Christmas. My children's church doodles have far surpassed my own. I'm fine with that. There are infinite versions of both Woman and Mom. We all get to create our own version. In an interview on the podcast "The Women with Fire" Jamie Cook, said, "I can be whatever kind of mom I want to be. I can be really fit, I can be really clean and organized, I can be an amazing cook, I can be a really fun mom, but I can't be all those versions of a mom at one time." (Jamie's fabulous Instagram account is @wanderandscout.) As our version of motherhood evolves and changes to meet different phases of our lives, we pick up new interests and talents that enrich our lives. One of my favorite podcast episodes is "How to Be the Mom You Are Instead of the Mom You Think You Should Be," an interview on "The 3 in 30 Podcast" with Julie Bastedo. She made a list of all the things she does not do as a mother, including organizing playdates, skiing, camping, blogging or podcasting, and doing anything (including exercise) excessively and gave herself permission not to do them. She does not feel bad about this list at all. She says, "I realized, well of course those are things I cannot do, or never do, or do not enjoy doing, because those things have nothing to do with who I am.... We are constantly reading on social media or reading in parenting books or following on television all of these things as mothers that we are supposed to be. And very infrequently do we recognize who we really are." Julie then made a list of all the things she does do well as a mother to contribute to her family, including patience, reading good literature (and applying what she learns from it to motherhood), reading aloud, and teaching. We all have things to add to both lists, and we might as well embrace those lists. I'll end with a list of some of the amazing mothers I know and the things that things that give them that "This Is Who I Am" feeling, to get you thinking about the unique attributes you bring to your version of motherhood: Juliana is a painter. She paints when she can, and teaches her kids (and other people's kids) to paint. This spring, she left her five kids with her husband for a weekend and went on an art retreat with her sister. Molly is good at family finance. She likes to have her own finances in order and likes to help others do the same. Jennifer is a teacher and a swimmer. Even though she could easily argue that she doesn't have time for it with her six children, she teaches swim lessons every May and June to share both of these gifts with others and to feel like herself. Sarah feels most like herself when she is baking. This year, she opened up a cookie shop from her home. Ashley is a crafter and inventor. She has turned this talent into a hugely successful website and business called Make It and Love It, with brilliant ideas and tutorials. Susan, my mom, is a genealogist. She dabbled with this hobby while she was raising us, but now that we're grown, she treats it as a part-time job and is really good at it. My sisters, Hayley and Cassie, are singers, and now sing together professionally in a trio while raising their young families. Sandy is an accomplished dancer who now cultivates that talent by sharing it with students at the gym. (I am one of the lucky beneficiaries.) Whatever your brand of motherhood, embrace it, cultivate it, and spend time doing those things that make you feel like you!
Creating an iconic brand in 10 years is a challenge however for many, that's exactly what Ross Jurisich and his co-founders Jamie Cook and Brad Rogers have managed to achieve with Stone & Wood. The story behind their journey form corporate beer guys to creators of the best beer in the world (my opinion only) is one of resilience, creativity and an understanding of the exact experience that they are hoping to create. Stephanie and Kristen have an amazingly informative and fun conversation with seasoned entrepreneur and real estate investor -- Jamie Cook. Jamie has her own real estate brokerage on the East coast, with 17 agents and growing. She shares many lessons and tips from her many years of experience investing in multi family, single family and real estate development all over the world.
This is a big episode. It's a milestone, not only for the show at Episode 50 but running an episode with Stone & Wood had been a personal objective of mine since early on in the program. Jamie Cook is an incredible man and when we were down for the episode, he showed us the hospitality that Stone & Wood and Northern NSW are famous for. There's an absolute abundance of value in today's show and insights that we've never had before. So sit back and relax - or grab a pen - and enjoy.

Welcome to a special podcast from the Australian Brews News team. Thanks to Bintani, we ran a live broadcast of the last two hours of the GABS Hottest 100 craft beers of 2017. We broadcast live from Balter, who ended up being named #1 in the poll. We chose Balter early in the voting process, well before the results were known, which turned out well for the show. While we managed to keep the show pretty on track despite a number of planned and unplanned guests dropping by the studio, good order was lost a little towards the end once the winner had been announced. We were very surprised to have Mick Fanning and then Joel Parkinson drop by to join us, Joel having raced in having left a wedding to celebrate with the team at Balter. Despite a few occasional rough edges, the podcast does capture the excitement of the countdown, the surprise as the results were announced and also how important the GABS Hottest 100 has come to be to the Australian beer industry. Don't let any brewer try and tell you that they don't care about the results. We would like to thank Balter for their generosity in making the boardroom available, and for the time they gave us especially as it became clear that we were in for an exciting finish. We'd also like to thank our co-hosts Kerry Claydon and Steve ‘Hendo' Henderson for joining us for the broadcast. Thanks also to our guests: Balter's Scott Hargrave, who - as you will hear - was so generous with his time we had to shoo out the door so he could actually celebrate the result rather than be stuck in the studio Stone & Wood's Jamie Cook who happened to be on the coast and made the effort to join us in the studio and happened to be there as the final results were announced. Pirate Life's Michael Cameron who joined us from a very hot carpark in South Australia Feral's Brendan Varis who called in from WA Dave Padden who accepted our call while he was pulled over on a highway. And also to Steve Jeffares, one of the founder of the Hottest 100 and the GABS Festival and Phil Meddings from Bintani, both of whom had their interviews put on hold as we were happily gatecrashed by a couple of excited world champion surfers. Finally, thank you to Bintani - who will bring the right ingredients to your brewery, just as they do with Balter - for sponsoring the show. We genuinely could not have done it without them.
Don’t let any brewer try and tell you that they don’t care about the results. We would like to thank Balter for their generosity in making the boardroom available, and for the time they gave us especially as it became clear that we were in for an exciting finish. We’d also like to thank our co-hosts Kerry Claydon and Steve ‘Hendo’ Henderson for joining us for the broadcast. Thanks also to our guests: Balter’s Scott Hargrave, who - as you will hear - was so generous with his time we had to shoo out the door so he could actually celebrate the result rather than be stuck in the studio Stone & Wood’s Jamie Cook who happened to be on the coast and made the effort to join us in the studio and happened to be there as the final results were announced. How do you want your loved ones to remember you? Your face illuminated by the light of a screen? Of course not. None of us do. But we are ALL guilty of letting our devices distract us from what is most important. If you've struggled from time to time with balancing your technology use, if you often feel sad, jealous, lonely, or apathetic, and if your devices are acting more as a task master than a tool, then it's time to refocus. In today's podcast, two guests (Kim Christenson and Jamie Cook) and I share how to recognize when your technology use is out of control, and how to turn it back into a tool for good. "I believe we really are a global family . . . We all matter." Jamie is an adventurer. You might already know this if you follow her adventures via her Instagram, blog, and her segment on Studio 5, a popular Utah talk show. But Jamie is also a collector of friendships. She values people. She seeks connection with others wherever she lives, wherever she travels. And it really shows! In this podcast, Jamie shares about her love of travel, how her family's foundation is centered on getting out of the house and interacting with others, and how making friends with refugees has influenced her life. Jame also talks about what it was like to put her broadcasting career on hold to raise her four children, and what it has been like to get back in the field. Finally, you'll hear what Jamie does to stay balanced and organized--and I think you'll love her atypical answer! This week we catch up with one of the founders of Stone & Wood, Jamie Cook. In a very wide-ranging conversation, we hear about Stone & Wood's year of growth, how they are managing the brewery's growth both from a production and organisational culture perspective, their successes during 2016, decision to appeal the court loss against Thunder Road. We also have a fascinating chat about the state of the market including some keen insights into where the beer market is, where it is heading and the opportunities this provides to small brewers. Among the insights offered are Jamie's views that while conscious consumers provide great opportunities for small independent brewers, there are four challenges in the market, being clutter, price compression, quality and big dollar and we discuss these at length, including the critical question of value equation in a tight market. A fascinating discussion.

This week we chat with Jamie Cook who, while these days better known as a founder of Stone & Wood Brewery, has many years of experience working for Australia's two largest brewing companies as well as as a marketing consultant. Jamie is one of our favourite industry watchers and while the conversation inevitably comes back to Stone & Wood's approach to business, the conversation looks at issues of craft, provenance, beer bubbles and the future of beer. (We had teed up this interview some weeks ago for this to run today, and it is a coincidence the brewery features in our feed several times today.) The interview kicks off looking at the new English United Craft Brewers group's proposed definition of 'craft beer', which currently reads: A craft brewer is: Authentic: Brews all beer at original gravity. Owns and operates a craft brewer based (HQ) in UK Honest: The place where the beer is brewed is clearly listed on the label of the beer. All ingredients are clearly listed on the label of the beer. All the beer is brewed at a craft brewery. Independent: Less than 25 per cent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (for equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member that is not itself a craft brewer. Radio Brews News is hosted by Matt Kirkegaard and Pete Mitcham and is produced by Lachie Mackintosh. ___________________________________________________________________ Radio Brews News is proudly supported by and also by
