We're joined once again by Carlos Plaloza and Larry Norris, co-founders of Decriminalize Nature, to discuss reclaiming the human history of plant medicine. On this mind-opening journey we dive into the ways that psychedelics have shaped human culture over hundreds of thousands of years, how they release you from your cultural assumptions, and why authorities have worked so hard to suppress and control them in "civilized" society. Watch along and learn here with us, face-to-face -- or listen to Moneyless Society on Spotify next time you're cruising the highway! And if you want to join a community that's legitimately trying to show that a better world is possible, find us on social media, reach out, be welcomed. Together is the only way forward.
Today we have Dr. Larry Norris on the podcast with us who is the Co-Founder of Decriminalize Nature. He believes it is an unalienable right to have one's own relationship with Nature, and that human beings and American citizens have an unalienable natural right to use plants of their choice. He encourages empowering grassroots communities to build local and culturally relevant support structures related to entheogens. His doctoral research focuses on ayahuasca experiences and integration, as well as expanding integration concepts beyond the psychotherapeutic paradigm and we discuss many of these aspects. Join us as we have a wide open discussion about building a bridge between the science and the spiritual. What is Decriminalize Nature? 1:20The initial motivation to decriminalizing nature 16:37Focusing on what is right and how this is helpful for the community 22:10Studying ayahuasca in Hawaii 30:09The meaning of words and communication 42:00Planting seeds and being stewards 51:30What's on the horizon 57:00“What's the best way to help our communities out? We're not trying to push it down everyone's throat, we're just saying ‘Let's not arrest people because is throwing someone in jail a safer scenario than letting people engage in these experiences and really see decriminalization as a risk reduction strategy by decriminalizing a lot of the people who are underground so they can actually come above ground now and talk about their experiences, and share with the others.' They can have support groups or folks that come in and learn about these experiences.” 24:54www.decrimnaturemi.orgwww.decriminalizenature.org

What an absolute honor to have Larry Norris, PHD on the Podcast! Adam and Larry speak about all the groundbreaking new laws and movements around the "Decriminalize Nature" organization. These guys are doing wonderful work. We are in such an amazing time as we move toward the decriminalization and legalization of psychedelics and entheogenic plants. We discuss normalizing psychedelics as therapy, the rules surrounding these new laws, how experienced people like ourselves can be available for service to people who need help integrating their psychedelic experience. He also speaks a bit on the general thoughts about how the Native American tribes feel about the movement; especially in regards to Peyote. We have a bigger role in life whether we like it or not; sharing these medicines and making sure more people have access, and are educated on them is our mission, we're happy that we can be here to help. It feels surreal. Enjoy. Ancient faiths and indigenous peoples across the world have long believed in the ceremonial use of psychedelic plants & fungi as a means of spiritual awakening and confrontation of trauma. However, the so-called War on Drugs has long prevented these groups from being able to practice these rites and rituals without either mountains of red tape or fear of criminal prosecution. Decriminalize Nature wants to change that. Through education, advocacy and lobbying, they are trying to change the perspective on these entheogenic compounds and give these cultures, as well as those seeking to explore their inner space, the freedom to practice their spiritual understanding. Decriminalizing Nature Oakland (DNO) is a grassroots organization in Oakland, California with the mission to improve human health and well-being by decriminalizing and expanding access to entheogenic plants and fungi through political and community organizing, education and advocacy. In 2019 they successfully led a campaign to get psychoactive plants and fungi decriminalized in Oakland. They have since become a model for cities around the united states and the world. This episode opens up a conversation about the movement to lift up our interconnected relationship with nature and the work to harness the healing power of nature. We talk about the drug war being a war on people's cognitive liberty and Freedom of consciousness. We get into the nuances of what it means to decriminalize something as opposed to legalizing it. This leads us to interesting lessons in the power of grassroots social transformation. We talk about the concept “Entheogen,” which means the divine within as a term for medicinal plants. And we get into the burgeoning research into the powerful healing power of entheogens. And we talk about love, and community.More Info at: “Decriminalizing Nature” with Carlos Plazola and Larry NorrisMusic: "Giving Up On Us” by Mazin Jamal
In today’s special bonus episode, we’re talking with the co-founders of Decriminalize Nature, Carlos Plazola and Larry Norris. Their mission is to promote human health and wellbeing by decriminalizing and expanding access to entheogenic plants and fungi. By utilizing political and community organizing, education, and advocacy, they are closer than ever to their goal. Carlos and Larry discuss how their organization began as an effort to help people reconnect with nature by way of using plants for their healing properties. This naturally led to them advocating for the removal of plants from their Schedule 1 status so that people can once again rediscover and utilize them as medicine. For anyone who is interested in organizing change in their community, Carlos and Larry share their advice on how to get started. It begins by gathering a small group of like-minded community members and developing a resolution. From there, it can be shared with a broader coalition of people from various parts of the community. Once it has gained wider support, it can be brought before the local government. As this movement increasingly spreads around the country, more and more organizations and individuals are getting involved. We talk about recent changes in attitudes that have taken place to make this possible and how this might lead to further developments in the near future. In this episode: The grassroots mission of Decriminalize Nature and how it has spread all over the country How Carlos and Larry became involved in advocating for decriminalization efforts Practical advice on how to organize for decriminalization at the community level What decriminalization means on the local and federal levels How the decriminalization movement has spread to cities around the United States Lessons learned from the decriminalization of cannabis How the decriminalization movement has become more diverse than ever Quotes: “This is a moment when we can stand up and say that these are important for us to be able to work with, on a personal level, a spiritual level, and healing level. And now the science is showing that.” [3:51] “This is not a fear-based movement. This is a movement about liberation, equitable access, and remembering our connection to nature.” [12:17] “The more news that comes out, the more people see that it’s possible. The more people see the support, then everyone gets excited to jump on it. It feels safe.” [26:25] “This is a non-political issue. It’s very much a human issue.” [32:49] Links: Decriminalize Nature Follow Decriminalize Nature on Facebook | Instagram MAPS ERIE Applying the Lessons of Legal Cannabis to Psychedelics Decriminalization VIDEO: Decriminalize Nature Addresses the Berkeley City Council Check out the full episode post Keep up with everything Plant Medicine related here Porangui
Download In this episode, Joe and Kyle sit down and chat with Veronica Hernandez and Larry Norris of Decriminalize Nature Oakland. Decriminalize Nature is an educational campaign to inform Oakland residents about the value of entheogenic plants and fungi and propose a resolution to decriminalize our relationship to nature, which just recently had success in doing so. 3 Key Points: Decriminalize Nature Oakland is a campaign that just recently found success in decriminalizing psilocybin mushrooms as well as other psychedelic compounds naturally derived from plants or fungi, such as ayahuasca, peyote and DMT. The mission behind Decriminalize Nature is to improve human health and well-being by decriminalizing and expanding access to entheogenic plants and fungi through political and community organizing, education and advocacy. These decriminalization initiatives are gaining traction across many cities in the US. It's about connecting to key people in the community and educating them, so they can use their reach to get information about these plants out there, to provide access to people everywhere. Navigating Psychedelics Trip Journal Integration Workbook Show Notes About Veronica Veronica is a clinical psychologist licensed in Peru She has been working in the US as a Social Worker Clinician She has been combining plant medicines and spirituality back into psychology She is currently finishing her PhD at CIIS About Larry He is in the same PhD program as Veronica Him and Veronica are the team that created ERIE In between they have taken the time to run Decriminalize Nature Oakland Decriminalize Nature In this initiative, they had to convince 8 people of city council to agree to this, in comparison to the Denver Initiative, where they needed thousands of ballot signatures This bill included naturally occurring psychedelic compounds, not just mushrooms Larry mentions they used the word entheogen instead of psychedelic, as a way to create new conversation around the plant medicines a reduce the stigma A Win for Plant Medicine From where Veronica comes from, Ayahuasca and other plant medicines are national patrimony, state and church can't touch them To be able to bring these to a place where it's considered schedule 1, Veronica is super inspired about being able to make this happen Right now these plants are in a tug of war between money interest of the tax side and the government, and the other side of corporate interest The goal now is to educate people on what these plants do, safe practices and develop places and services to hold the space and make these plants available to people It's about connecting to key people in the community and educating them, so they can use their reach to get information about these plants out there Starting city by city is typically easier to initiate, to then have a better hold on direct action and education afterward to be able to duplicate on the state level They have had 50 different cities from 30 different states reach out to make this happen in their communities Veronica says that her first time trying San Pedro, she had felt an immediate connection to the plants It became her goal to combine conventional medicine with plant medicines and make it available to everyone “To be in touch with something bigger than yourself is one of the most important things" - Veronica Sustainability Although there was no verbiage in the bill, they are being mindful about sustainability of the plants when making them more available with decriminalization Synthesis is a better idea for ibogaine, 5-MEO-DMT and other compounds that are naturally derived but also pose a risk to their sustainability with decriminalization The landscape just doesn't allow for synthesis right now, so we start at decriminalization and then hopefully open doors to the route of synthesis to aid in the sustainability of these substances and resources Larry’s advice is that instead of spending your money and taking a trip to Denver or Oakland, to stay home and organize this is your own community because it can actually happen It starts now and it starts with education Joe says the most major push-back received in Denver for the decriminalization was the threat of people driving on mushrooms Links Website Facebook Instagram Twitter About Veronica Veronica Hernandez, is a clinical psychologist and shamanic practitioner from Peru.
