In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin welcomes Dr. Simon Ruffell, a psychiatrist, ayahuasca researcher, and student of curanderismo. Find full show notes and links here: https://thethirdwave.co/podcast/episode-300/?ref=278 Simon shares his transformative journey from being a skeptical Western psychiatrist to embracing the spiritual dimensions of plant medicine after experiencing what he describes as an "ontological shock" during an ayahuasca ceremony. He discusses his ongoing apprenticeship with Shipibo curanderos in the Amazon, his research into ayahuasca's effects on mental health and epigenetics, and his work bridging indigenous wisdom with Western scientific understanding. Dr. Ruffell explores the differences between Western medical approaches and traditional healing practices, highlighting how the Shipibo focus on harmony and balance rather than fixing specific problems. Through his organization Onaya, he conducts reciprocal research with indigenous communities, studying how ayahuasca affects veterans with PTSD and examining the epigenetic changes that may explain its profound healing effects. Dr. Simon Ruffell is trained across three modalities: Western medicine (as a medical doctor specializing in psychiatry), research psychology (with a PhD in Amazonian ayahuasca and mental health), and traditional plant medicine (as a student of curanderismo). He is the Chief Medical Officer of MINDS, a nonprofit research organization exploring the potential of psychedelics and consciousness practices to address humanity's greatest challenges. Since 2015, his work has focused primarily on exploring ayahuasca while collaborating with indigenous communities in the Amazon basin. He is the CEO of Onaya and founded the nonprofit Onaya Science, which researches the effects of ayahuasca in naturalistic Amazonian settings. Dr. Ruffell's work seeks to understand plant medicines from both Indigenous and Western perspectives, and he is currently training in Shipibo Shamanism under Don Rono Lopez. Highlights: A spiritual attack during ceremony that shifted his perspective on reality Bridging indigenous wisdom with Western scientific research The difference between psychedelic guides and trained shamans Ayahuasca and epigenetics: clearing ancestral trauma How traditional medicine evolves and adapts over time Remarkable PTSD treatment outcomes with veterans Approaching healing as returning to harmony EEG research during ceremonial Icaros singing Shamans as navigational experts of the psychedelic realm When to choose Western medicine vs. traditional approaches Episode Links: Dr. Simon Ruffell's Website Onaya Onaya Science Episode Sponsor Psychedelic Coacing Isntitute's Intensive for Psychedelic Professionals in Costa Rica - a transformative retreat for personal and professional growth.

March 3, 1993. Rancho Viejo, Texas. When 18 year old Joey Fischer Jr. broke up with his girlfriend Cristina, her mother, Dora Garcia Cisneros, could not accept it. The young man came from a good family, was a good student, and Cisneros imagined her daughter marrying him. When Joey refused to reconcile with Cristina, rejecting Dora's $500 bribe and relentless phone calls, Dora took matters into her own hands, and consulted a Curandero, a folk healer and fortune teller whom she pleaded with to cast a love spell on the boy to fix the relationship. When the Curandero said it wasn't possible, Cisneros came up with a more deadly solution.Get bonus content from Generation Why at: patreon.com/generationwhyListen ad free with Wondery+. How to move from the darkness to the light, protect yourself, and find forgiveness in the trauma; a path to healing and liberation with master shaman Don William. Don William Llerena Murayari, COCAMA – PERUis a Peruvian Curandero of the Cocama lineage. He grew up learning first hand of the medicinal plants of the jungle through his father and grandfather, who were both Curanderos. From the age of 12, William was helping his father, Santiago Llerena, who was primarily a Vegetelista, make remedies for people who were sick in his village. Now he is a highly respected Curandero with over 30 years of experience working with the plants and has had the opportunity to grow communities and bring healing to many people across the globe. He has a unique style, and is a clear channel for the medicine, working with much integrity, humility and compassion. His musical mastery and exquisite visionary paintings are true examples of his profound connection. William says, “the songs that I sing in the healing ceremonies are the fruits of the work with the medicines. That is why when i sing the Icaros, the language of the plants, we can connect directly with the spirit world, entering profoundly until the heart of the earth, the rivers and outer space.”Discover more @iluminamedicina

Today on Sense of Soul Podcast, Rev. Gabriel Castillo, an Initiated Curandero, Psychedelic Guide, Shamanic Sound Healing Practitioner, Sound Healing Instructor, Certified Facilitator in Mindfulness Meditation, Law Of Attraction Coach, Yoga Therapist, Hypnotherapist, course instructor and author. He is joining us to share his journey of how he was called into this work and to educate us about plant medicine. Rev. Gabriel's journey started after the transition of a close friend. This catalyzed the deep dive journey into understanding energy, during which he began shedding layers of himself. The universe had very particular plans and led him to remote areas of the world where he immersed himself in the power of the mind. Unintentionally, Rev. Gabriel's being grew increasingly aware of the mental prisons we keep ourselves in due to attachments we choose to have, perspectives we take, and subconscious thought patterns we are running on a daily basis. If we are our own healers, then we are in turn our own destroyers. He found it his responsibility, duty, and obligation to Finally Detach himself from the dogma's that were not his own. This was, and continues to be a deep cleansing process. Initiated by Taino Elder Don Hongo as a Curandero. Rev. Gabriel works specifically with the mushroom to open deeper channels for those who are ready to receive it. On this week's Free Thought Project Podcast, Jason and Matt sit down with Luis Fernando Mises. Luis is a Consultant who teaches Leadership all over the United States. He's also a Yoga instructor, a Meditation teacher, a student of Austrian Economics, a Statesman with the Libertarian Party, a Curandero, an Entrepreneur, and a Family man. He realized his personal mission was to empower others and to be present. This realization propelled him to create Emancipated Human as a way to bring stories that would help people see the nature of the police state we currently live in. In this episode, we discuss the power of entheogens and other plant-based medicines that have been used for millennia to expand consciousness and help humanity understand its connection with all life. Luis provides some powerful insight into the realm of plant-based medicine as well as explains how altered states of consciousness can be achieved through breathwork. Luis is a certified breathwork instructor and he offers classes in which he teaches others how to reach these higher states of consciousness through breathing. Luis also dives into the benefits of kratom and how this centuries-old plant is under attack from the powers that be because it directly competes with their Big Pharma monopoly. So this is part 1 of the podcast series called La Última Ceremonia (The end is just the beginning), which is about my 3-week trip to the amazon Jungle where I opened up a 3-month learning diet with a plant called Marosa. This episode is about the climax of my journey, the big event, it's about La Última Ceremonia, the last ceremony, the last major event that happened during my time in Peru. And yes this is just part 1, so think of this series and this episode like the movie Memento where we watch the ending first and then in future episodes we will go back in time to uncover and bear witness to the events that lead up to this climactic ending. If you have any questions or comments please reach out garett.renon@gmail.comAlso if you like this podcast please like, share and leave a review.See you on the other side.
Ok so this is the Introduction episode to a podcast series call La Última Ceremonia (the end is just the beginning) which is a series about my 3-week trip to the amazon jungle where I stayed with a Shipibo family and opened up a 3-month Sama (also known as a plant diet) with a plant called Marosa. This was such a life changing experience on so many levels that I felt like I needed to document the trip. So my plan is to do several podcasts not only documenting my journey in the jungle but also to talk about things like: The history of plant medicines The culture of the Shipibo The differences between western medicine and indigenous medicine The differences between western culture and indigenous culture The rise of spiritual materialism What it means and takes to become a healer or curandero And whatever else comes to mind Because the truth is I don't have much of a plan, just a lot of ideas and information swirling around in my head and a very general framework in which to follow. So the purpose of this introduction episode is to lay the groundwork, giving you the basic information needed so that we can hit the ground running in future episodes.Lastly if you have any questions about this trip or anything else feel free to hit me up either on instagram or email me at garett.renon@gmail.com

Una nota: para ver las notas del programa en español para este episodio, visite mi sitio web a: https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/ernesto-garciaHey everybody! Episode 80 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend and teacher, Ernesto Garcia Torres. I met Ernesto about a decade ago when I began apprenticing and learning from him how to diet and work with plant medicine. I knew from the moment I met him that I would develop a relationship with Ernesto. I saw strength, humility, confidence, and dedication in him that were unmatched. It also probably helped that he was a martial artist, so I liked that!. I have learned a great deal from Ernesto over the years, not just in terms of how to work with plants and what it means to be a good doctor, but also from his presence, and what it means to be a good man and to walk the path of someone who carries medicine. So it was a real pleasure and honor to sit down with him and have him share. I know you all will gain a lot from this interview. One note to mention is that he uses the word and idea of Jesus a lot, and for some that can be a loaded word, but he is clear that you can substitute any word that suits you better, such as god, nature, truth, etc. The interview is in Spanish and has been translated into English. Thank you to my friend and colleague Valco Kostov for the translation. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy! Ernesto Garcia Torres is a tabaquero, a medicine person specializing in the medicinal use of tobacco, one of the most powerful plant teachers of the Amazon. He lives and works in Iquitos, Peru. He has a land and center, Ampiri, where he works with people sharing in the healing and learning from Amazonian plant medicines. This episode is sponsored by the Temple of the Way of Light: https://templeofthewayoflight.org/Share the show, Subscribe or Follow, leave comments, and if you can go on Apple Podcasts and leave a starred-rating and a short review.
