The Achuar people living in the rainforests of Ecuadorian Amazon are stewards of land that holds some of the richest biodiversity in the world. They rely heavily on river transportation, and in recent years, the Achuar have been on a journey to reduce their use of gas-powered boats to something less harmful to the environment. Jessica Ramirez talks with Nantu Canelos, Luciano Peas, and Oliver Utne about a partnership between the Achuar people and an organization called Kara Solar that has led to the incorporation of solar power into the everyday life of many Achuar people. This episode includes everything from jaguars to dream interpretation, and we hope you enjoy it. Host and Lead Producer: Jessica Ramirez. Story editor: Jenny Asarnow. Today's episode is a dynamic conversation with Anita Sanchez, Ph.D., Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey, and Tim Harjo about Indigenous Wisdom. Our guests initially came together as a panel to speak about the Hoffman Process during our first-ever virtual Hoffman Conference in April 2021. Their panel discussion titled, Indigenous Voices: Answering the Call to Mend Our World, offered profound wisdom for all of us to heed in these times. Each has been a solo guest on our podcast (links below). Now, we've invited them back to share this wisdom with you. A beautiful part of this conversation is how the Hoffman Process overlaps with Native culture. All three of our guests find the Process to be aligned, and even the same, as elements of their culture. What they share is truly beautiful about what it means to do the inner work in order to realize who we really are. Tim, Elizabeth, and Anita share these core beliefs:  separation is an illusion, we are never alone, we must remember who we are, and our modern lives are in need of indigenous wisdom. As Anita suggests, we invite you to "listen with soft ears and expanded heart." More About Our Guests Tim Harjo Timothy Harjo Tim is a member of the Fort Sill Apache Tribe. As a child, he was a student at an Indian Boarding school, as were other members of his family. He did his Process as part of Hoffman Institute's Leadership Path while a student at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. As the General Manager of KNMQ Television in Albuquerque, NM, his vision is to amplify Native voices into the mainstream conversation around how we live with each other and with our Mother Earth. Tim earned a B.S. degree in Management from Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. He then earned his Juris Doctorate is from Arizona State University. Tim received his Master's Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University. He also holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from California State University, Northridge. A cultural anthropologist and award-winning filmmaker, Elizabeth travels to the world's most remote regions as a conservationist of indigenous wisdom and an advocate for social, environmental, and cultural justice. Ancient faiths and indigenous peoples across the world have long believed in the ceremonial use of psychedelic plants & fungi as a means of spiritual awakening and confrontation of trauma. However, the so-called War on Drugs has long prevented these groups from being able to practice these rites and rituals without either mountains of red tape or fear of criminal prosecution. Decriminalize Nature wants to change that. Through education, advocacy and lobbying, they are trying to change the perspective on these entheogenic compounds and give these cultures, as well as those seeking to explore their inner space, the freedom to practice their spiritual understanding. About the Guests:Carlos Plazola studied biology and anthropology at UCLA to make sense of life on this planet. He lived with the Achuar of Ecuador to connect with deeper meaning and the sacred. He studied Environmental Science at Yale to understand the human impact on Earth's ecosystems. But he also needed to learn the tools to create change. Carlos' first career was as a community organizer with ACORN. He organized communities around social and environmental justice for seven years to learn community organizing. He also wanted to learn the tools of government, so he worked for a congressperson, and then became a chief of staff to a councilmember and ran political campaigns. Finally, Carlos wanted to learn the tools and logic of business, so he became a businessperson, grew several companies to over 50 employees, and became a developer to learn how to create the built environment. Today, he has the tools he needs. From here forward, he dedicates the rest of his life to creating spaces and movements that honor the beauty of life. Larry Norris, PhD is the co-founder and on the Board of Decriminalize Nature and helped to co-author the resolution that received a unanimous decision from Oakland City Council in June 2019. He has supported the successful passage of DN related policy in seven cities across the US and is currently supporting individual DN teams in roughly 45 cities to pass similar policy, as well as statewide legislation in 3 states. He is also the co-founder and executive director of ERIE (Entheogenic Research, Integration, and Education) 501(c)(3), a group dedicated to the development of entheogenic education and integration models. Larry holds a Ph.D. from the East-West Psychology department at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco; his dissertation reviews archived ayahuasca experiences to identify transformational archetypes and insights and consider their implications for integration. As adjunct faculty at CIIS, Larry taught a graduate course called Entheogenic Education: Contemporary Perspectives on Ancient Plant Wisdom in order to discuss the concept of entheogens as educational teachers and cognitive tools. He was also an adjunct faculty at John F. Kennedy University teaching a class titled Paradigms of Consciousness. A dedicated activist and proponent of cognitive liberty, Larry's efforts are a contribution to not only change the Western legal status of these powerful plants, fungus, and compounds, but also to emphasize the sacred nature of entheogens given the right set and setting. Anita Sanchez, Ph.D., Aztec, and Latina, is devoted to bridging Indigenous wisdom and modern times. In this episode, Anita shares the four sacred gifts she offers in her book, The Four Sacred Gifts: Indigenous Wisdom for Modern Times. She then tells a story from her childhood that shows the power of The Gift of the Power to Forgive the Unforgiveable. She also shares a big AHA moment during her Process when she learned of the power that a pattern of rebellion 'against' can hold. It takes a lot of energy to stay connected through rebellion. Anita speaks of how we are all indigenous in the anthropological sense. We are all "from the Earth", she tells us. She goes on to say that "some of us have, for thousands of years, consistently lived the tradition of the original knowledge." She invites us to learn about who we are and where we came from. Anita Sanchez is an author, trainer, speaker. She works with Fortune 500 corporations, businesses, educators, and non-profit organizations.  Her work focuses on cultural transformation, diversity and inclusion, and empowerment of women. She also focuses on bridging indigenous wisdom and science for business and societal renewal. I heard Lynne Twist speak for the first time approximately eight years ago and have been a huge fan of her work ever since. Her ability to capture the essence of what matters most in life is deeply moving and inspiring. In fact, what I distinctly remember from that day is that every cell in my body was resonating with energy that coursed through my body and made what felt like an indelible impression on my soul. When I returned home, I dove more deeply into her work. I discovered that while tiny in physical presence, she has always been mighty in vision and capability. For more than forty years she has been a recognized global visionary dedicated to alleviating poverty, ending world hunger, and supporting social justice and environmental sustainability. Her breadth of knowledge and experience has led her to profound insights about the social tapestry of the world and the historical landscape of the times we are living in, especially now as we continue our journey into what she calls “The Sophia Century," which is defined as the time in our history when the feminine archetype returns, awakening women and men to transform the world. Lynne Twist is a global pro activist, speaker, and author of the best-selling book, The Soul of Money: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Life. She is the co-founder of the Pachamama Alliance, a social profit organization that is an alliance between indigenous people of the Amazon Rainforest and conscious, committed people in the modern world, for the sustainability of life. Lynne has shared her passion on stage with some of today's top thought leaders, including Oprah Winfrey, The Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall, and Desmond Tutu. Sara Vetter is the Business Development Director of the Soul of Money Institute (SOMI) and is a coach, consultant, workshop leader, keynote speaker, and strategist. She is also the Major Gift Fundraiser for the Pachamama Alliance. Sara has had experience in advertising, marketing, and sales with the Disney Channel and several magazines including LA Magazine. She has been coaching, consulting, and leading workshops with Lynne Twist for more than seven years. Sara is an experienced SOMI facilitator of workshops, fundraisers, journeys, and retreats. She also leads several of the Pachamama Alliance Transformational Educational programs. Sara has held a leadership role with the Nobel Women's Initiative, co-led delegations to Dharamsala, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Liberia. As the major gift fundraiser for the Pachamama Alliance, Sara has led and participated in more than nineteen delegations and immersion trips to the Amazon Rainforest. She has raised millions of dollars for the Pachamama Alliance and the Nobel Women's Initiative and is a consummate fundraiser. What if this is not the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of the womb?' Watch Valarie Kaur's speech, link below. Show Notes: This is a time of deep rupture, but also tremendous wisdom. The 20th Century was dominated by war or the fear of war. We are experiencing a breakdown of governance and the rule of law globally that has been dominating and surpassing for centuries. We are experiencing a revealing (revelation) of the many systems of colonization, white supremacy, racism, and the systematic abuse of other human beings. The Soul of Money Institute has been working in the realms of economy and ecology with the goal of guiding our human family back into remembering our connection to mother nature and in building sustainability. The masculine energy of economy and feminine energy of ecology need to work together in harmony and find a way to integrate and work together. We need both the innovation and the production of the masculine energy but we need that energy to be tempered with the nurturing and the flow of the feminine - such as the elements of fire and water. The pandemic is a portal into the change we need to reflect, reveal, regenerate, renew, recreate. This is a magical time where we invite the feminine back into our awareness. This is also a time to trust nature and witness the regenerative power of our environment and see it as proof of what's possible. The Kichwa People use the word Pachamama which means the earth, the sky, the universe, and all time. Lynne had an awakening experience through a shamanic ceremony and a vision and communication that connected her to an indigenous tribe called the Achuar people. The Soul of Money and The Pachamama Alliance have both been an integral part of connecting to the wisdom of the indigenous people and bringing it to the modern world so that we can transform our ways. The Remarkable Women's Journey is a program offered by The Soul of Money Institute through a six-month journey and part of that is traveling into the Amazon Rain Forest learning how they can be of service to the world in a bigger way. If you are a woman, your role is way more vital than you have known before. Your job at this time in history is to own that and tune into what is calling you forward and to do it with full permission and passion. You are wanted, needed, and you are important to the future of the planet, not as a burden, but as an honor. This time in our history is happening for us, not to us.

Aired Sunday, 2 April 2017, 2:00 PM ET Sister Jaguar’s Journey with Sandra Morse I have the pleasure to bring to you to you the dynamic duo of sister Jaguar and Sandra Morse to share how synchronicity brought them together to share a amazing lifetime experience. About Sister Judy Bisignano: Sister Judy Bisignano, a Dominican nun, spent sixty-eight years looking for God in all the wrong places. A lifetime of prayer and public service as a fierce and renowned educator in Tucson, Arizona failed to bring her the peace and divine connection she had always sought. SISTER JAGUAR’S JOURNEY (the film and the book) tells the story of her difficult childhood, and her attempt to avoid family life, marriage and motherhood by entering the convent, where she was met with an even more abusive situation. Ever the survivor, she worked with children and teenagers and founded two schools, yet when the school she started for the Mexican-American community in South Tucson was closed, she was forced to confront the devastating affects of her lifelong anger on her life, her work, and those around her. Divine intervention presented herself in the form of Sandra Morse, a friend and professional communication philosopher, who with a simple invitation to visit the Achuar community in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest, forever changed Sister Judy’s life. Launching her onto a path toward reconciliation with her turbulent, abusive, angry past, she eventually found peace and forgiveness through plant medicine in the Amazon rainforest. Yes, a Dominican nun drinking ayahuasca – and it changed everything. It was here in this moment, in this place, with these special people, that she found God, healing and forgiveness. While sitting in a canoe on the Pastaza River, Sister Judy witnessed a black jaguar devour a white bird. To date, she is the only visitor “from the north” to encounter a black jaguar in the Achuar region. According to the local shaman, seeing the black jaguar was a good omen, one that empowered Sister Judy to experience a series of cultural, environmental and spiritual shifts that ultimately transformed her life. Sister Jaguar’s Journey is the story of one nun’s transformational passage from self-rejection to self-acceptance; from self-blame to self-love. Perhaps it is also the journey of each of us as we search for peace in this life and beyond. The Achuar call her “Hermana Otorango – Sister Jaguar,” and so will you. Website: http://www.sisterjaguarsjourney.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SisterJaguarsJourney About Sandra Morse: Sandra Morse and her eleven siblings were raised in Yuma, Arizona. She is a communications philosopher and has a private practice in Tucson, Arizona. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and communication and is a certified mediator. Sandra is the co-author of Sister Jaguar’s Journey and the Executive Producer of the film Sister Jaguar’s Journey. She and her husband, Michael, have two adult children (Sophie and Elliott) and a teenage son (Oren) at home in Tucson. Sandra conducts eco-retreats into Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest. She has conducted 14 trips over the past several years. She has developed close, meaningful relationships with many Achuar (ACH-war) in various villages. Word spreads via short-wave radio among the villages that “Sandra is here to see us. It is time to gather and celebrate.” On a recent visit, Achuar elders of the Wayusentsa (y-u-SENT-sa) and Kusutkau (ka-SUIT-ka) villages publicly thanked and honored Sandra as “one of them.” They specifically asked that she work on their behalf to organize programs whereby community members from seven Achuar villages work to improve their lives thr

ORIGINAL AIRDATE: January 18th, 1988 --- A deadly accident is falsely pinned on Pete and MacGyver must prove his innocence. MISSION: A nuclear disarmament goes wrong and several Phoenix Foundation employees are killed. When Pete is blamed for the mistake, MacGyver must prove the accident was sabotage before Pete's nefarious replacement hatches an evil plan. This week's highlights include:     Shrunken head (History) A shrunken head is a severed and specially prepared human head that is used for trophy, ritual, or trade purposes. Headhunting has occurred in many regions of the world. But the practice of headshrinking has only been documented in the northwestern region of the Amazon rain forest, and the only tribes known to have shrunken human heads are of the Jivaroan tribes. These include the Shuar, Achuar, Huambisa and Aguaruna tribes, found in Ecuador and Peru. The Shuar call a shrunken head a tsantsa, also transliterated tzantza.
