Drew Spielman has fond memories of his father's time as a firefighter in his hometown of Menomonie, Wis. He also remembers visiting his grandfather, who would also share about his time as a volunteer firefighter. With two generations of firefighters as role models, Drew knew his future was also in the world of firefighting. He attended school to earn a degree in fire protection and landed a job with the Green Bay Fire Department. Woke up this morning, still sick. Ugh. So much coughing! Hopefully another restful day & one more good night's sleep and I'll be back to normal by the weekend. In the news this morning, Western Wisconsin fire departments are going to be installing free smoke detectors, the La Crosse County committee is holding off on selling land to Country Boom, a St. Croix Country Assistant District Attorney is in trouble for threatening some judges, and a bunch of Tostitos chips are being recalled. In sports, the Brewers destroyed the Rockies last night, the Bucks take on the Pelicans tonight, Ja Morant has moved on from his finger-gun celebration, and Cody Bellinger of the Yankees is giving up chicken wings for the foreseeable future. And did you see Rory McIlroy's daughter, Poppy, with the putt yesterday? Elsewhere in sports, a look at some of the other major records that could be broken now that Ovechkin passed Gretzky…and speaking of Gretzky, the Rolls Royce he got as a gift for passing Gordie Howe on the all-time NHL goals list is up for auction. Wild story & video footage from California yesterday where the wife of Weezer's bassist was shot & arrested by police. Office Cora joined me to talk about what she's doing this weekend in the 715 and to play a round of "Hypothetical Thursday". My question for her was: If you could only have one for the rest of your life, would you choose meat or veggies? Her question for me was: What superpower would you choose? Another day, another lost dog reunited with it's owner thanks to the kindness & generosity of others. And a student helped to save a teacher's life after they collapsed. Have you ever worked at a job with background music? Apparently it can be VERY detrimental to your mental health and your productivity at work. Go figure. A new study found that having a pet makes you as happy as earning an extra $90k/year. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", a driver-less car got stuck in a Chik-Fil-A drive thru after it malfunctioned, an emergency dispatcher in Georgia is being investigated for ordering some breakfast from McDonald's while on a 911 call, a bunch of pallbearers fell into the burial hole at a cemetery, a mother in Texas who was accused of driving while drunk told the cops that she was on the way to pick up her five-month-old baby…but the baby was already in her backseat, and a foster mom is under investigation for allegedly trying to trade one of her foster kids for an exotic monkey. Jim Jones has over 50 years of baseball coaching experience at the youth, high school, college, semi-pro and international levels. He served as assistant coach at Stanford University before becoming head coach at the University of Wyoming and St. Mary's College (CA). Presently he is retired from teaching, is assistant golf coach at Oregon Tech and is PastPresident of International Sports Group, Inc. In 1991, Jim began his international experience by becoming coach in residence in Czechoslovakia as part of a joint IBA-MLBI program. Following that “Lone Ranger” assignment, he served with Bill Arce as MLBI's Co-coordinator of Game Development in Europe. His duties there allowed him to over-see the selection and evaluation of Envoy Coaches assigned to various European federations as well as overseeing many of MLBI's winter coaches' clinics. When his MLB duties took him further away from the baseball field and into the administration offices, Jim decided he wanted to return to activities that allowed him to work directly with European coaches and players. That desire allowed him to take a new path in international baseball. Since that return to the field, he has worked with baseball federations in the Czech Republic, France, Spain, Holland, Croatia and Portugal. He has served as an instructor, manager and assistant coach at all levels from Cadets through the Senior level of play. At the 2006 European Baseball Coaches Association's winter convention, Jim received EBCA's Achievement Award in recognition of his work in European Baseball since the early 1990's. He also has received MLB's Julio Puente Award for his outstanding work as an MLB Envoy Coach From 2005 to 2009, Coach Jones worked with the Spanish Baseball Federation working with coaches and players in clubs and camps - as well as serving as the pitching and catching coach from the Cadet, Junior and Senior National Teams. Following his work in Spain, Coach Jones worked 5 years with the French Baseball Academies in Toulouse, Rouen, Montpellier, Bretagne and Talence, helping them prepare for various up-coming international tournaments. During June 2010, while back in the USA, Jim served as head coach of the Armed Forces team, US9, during an exhibition tour in Western Wisconsin. An additional international opportunity arose in 1998 when he joined with Bill Arce and International Sports Group to take over the administration of the winter baseball and softball clinics. The demand for coaching clinics remains high in Europe and ISG is committed to fulfill that game development need with the help of outside sponsorship. Jim served as ISG's president until he chose to step back on his administrative duties. He remains as an active board member of this important organization. Jim has had the opportunity to work with players of all ages and coaches from many European countries and Canada as well as staging baseball camps in New Zealand. These experiences combine with his USA coaching to give him a strong background to help game development programs in those federations desiring outside assistance. Jim and his wife, Sally, have two grown sons, Don and Mickey and a grandson Kalliah Creek

This is an exciting time of year as Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW) partners with the WIAA (Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association) and WSN (Wisconsin Sports Network). Dairy farmer, executive board member and WI representative on the National Dairy Board, Gail Klinkner, takes a moment to explain why this partnership is key from a nutritional standpoint, and a "next generation customer" position. Klinkner begins by explaining the dairy farm that her family operates in Western Wisconsin in the community of Viroqua. As a mom, Klinkner has 5 active kids - two of which are involved in high school sports themselves! Klinkner explains that DFW has enjoyed a long standing partnership with WIAA and WSN. Again in 2025, there will be a major messaging emphasis during State Tournaments! Wisconsin Dairy farmers not only support these teams, individuals, and communities, but they also share Wisconsin Dairy Farming messages to audiences that may be removed from agriculture. Sustainability, dairy product nutrition, and economic impact are a focus of the outreach. Appropriately enough, “Chocolate Milk is the official beverage of the WIAA”. Athletes at these state tournaments are provided chocolate milk. Promotion and consumption of chocolate milk and its recovery benefits for athletes and fans are showcased on television, social and in stadiums during these tournaments. Klinkner explains the partnership with WisSports.net that extends beyond the courts to the annual "Wisconsin Dairy Athlete of the Month". This showcase allows dedicated Wisconsin dairy to highlight youth who grow and raise food for their communities. WisSports.net is the go-to location for high school sports schedules, individual athlete and team statistics, as well as state rankings. More than 35 million pages are viewed annually at wissports.net, providing a great platform for athletes, coaches, and fans to see positive dairy messaging and support for our local farmers and athletes across the state. Wisconsin dairy will be recognizing two athletes every month during the campaign. To find out how you can submit an athlete honoree, go to wissports.net, wisconsindairy.org or WSN social media platforms.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I realized that I am turning the page and leaving the farm behind, and even though it sounds sad, this epiphany had to happen for me to move forward here at the Landing. In Episode 231, I discuss some observations, memories and epiphanies I had as I looked over the farmhouse, outbuildings and property. It is no secret that moving to a farm/homestead was my dream. All you have to do is look back through the archive of Small Scale Life Podcast episodes, and you can see that I was working hard to move out of the city and move to Western Wisconsin. In fact, Julie and I looked at some properties in 2017 before moving from our rental house in St. Louis Park to North Minneapolis, Minnesota. The timing wasn't right until 20. Eagle's Ridge We purchased the Eagles Ridge property with a dream to build a house, garden and pole barn there. It was a 2 acre property on the Apple River just north of New Richmond, Wisconsin. We worked hard clearing buckthorn, prickly ash and honey suckle (all invasives) from the property and clearing the top of the ridge so we could see the river. We also cleared down by the water and put in a long switchback path down the 60-foot bluff from the top of the ridge to the river. COVID, riots, and global shortages pushed the cost of building a home to astronomical heights, and we decided to pivot and go a different direction. Early one morning, Julie and I woke up early, and she convinced me to put Eagle's Ridge on a shelf and start to move on from that fading dream. It was not the right time to build a house. Driftless Oaks Farm Julie's brother in Texas was looking at homes and properties for us, and he found Driftless Oaks Farm. We took a look at the property and the price, and we fell in love with it. A major dream had been accomplished, and we couldn't wait to move in as soon as possible! Not all that glitters is gold, however. We were overwhelmed by the amount of work there, and we also ran into a massive roadblock: the house. We bought the farm with the intention of hosting gatherings there with our family and friends. I even started planning homesteading gatherings at the farm where folks would come and listen to great homesteaders and gardeners talk about things that they were doing on their homesteads. Think Self-Reliance Festival in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin! The house was small, and we found out that contractors were not keen on working with and adding on to a 1900-era house. The farmhouse was small, and it would have been difficult to add on to the house with the stone foundation in the front and cellar in the back. Contractors recommended bringing in a bulldozer and starting from scratch. Did we have fading dreams once we did some diligence? Yes, absolutely. It happened fast on the farm, especially after major life events in 2022. After Danny passed away, we decided it was time to sell and move away from the little farm. We did not see how we could improve the farmhouse economically and make it work for us, so it was time to put it on the market and move forward. This Week's Epiphany When I stopped by the farm this week and observed it from the neighbor's hill, it suddenly occurred to me that the young man that purchased the property made some significant changes for the better. He had the creativity, audacity, tenacity and the network to make some things happen. I realized after looking at our little farm for a while that our farm life was one of many fading dreams, and it was time for me to turn the page and move on forever.
