In this delightfully unhinged episode, The Stinas slither into the underbrush of Appalachian folk magic to unearth the secrets of Rattlesnake Weed—a plant that walks the crooked line between healing and harm. With their usual irreverent wit and a healthy dose of side-eye for organized religion, The Stinas tackle everything from Granny Witch remedies and mountain ghost stories to the bizarre Pentecostal snake-handling traditions. But that's not all—they're also diving broom-first into the magical universe of Practical Magic, where Rattlesnake Weed becomes a deadly euphoric drug in the hands of the wrong man (looking at you, Jimmy Angelov). Is it fiction? Is it folklore? Or just East Coast kids messing with desert plants they didn't grow up fearing?Expect comedic tangents, theological shade, and a touch of Southern gothic glam as The Stinas trace the real and imagined uses of this powerful plant—from backwoods altars to best-selling books.Because if there's one thing we know: one seed might lift you up… but two just might send you to the afterlife!SOCIALS:Link TreePatreonInstagramHERO SOURCESDISCLAIMERThe Magnolia Street Podcast intends to discuss the movie, “Practical Magic” in its entirety. "Is that a snake tattoo!" It sure is! His name is Greg and he's on Kristina's wrist! (Gillian would approve)In celebration of the Year of the Snake, the Stinas slither down all the twists & turns of snake symbolism in the Practical Magic film as well as the book series. Are a Garter Snake & Garden snake the same thing?!We also unravel the mythology of the ancient Ouroboros symbol throughout time and culture and show you how snake energy can be used in spell work.SOCIALS:Link TreePatreonInstagramHERO SOURCESDISCLAIMERThe Magnolia Street Podcast intends to discuss the movie, “Practical Magic” in its entirety. "We can't back out now, we're on the committee!" Merry Summer Solstice and Happy Litha to all of our neighbors here on Magnolia Street! In today's episode, dive into the world of Practical Magic as we explore the Magic of Midsummer! We'll discover the enchanting connections between the Summer Solstice, the symbolic sparrow that plagues the Owens household every Midsummer, and the threefold law! The Stinas rehash old theories about the film's timeline, and make some new discoveries revealing just where things may have derailed. "My Blood... Your Blood, Our Blood..." In Part 1 of this 2 part series about Blood Oaths & Magick, we will be exploring one of the most prominent and memorable scenes in the Practical Magic film: Sally & Gillian's blood oath. It is clear that the sisters have a connection that transcends time & space as Gillian makes a promise that Sally in turn uses to save Gillian's life. In today's episode, we'll acknowledge the absence of the sisters' blood oath in the books, however we pick out a "dark" characteristic that distinguishes it from the blood in the film, which author Alice Hoffman did not include until much later on in the series. Step into the enchanting world of Practical Magic as we unravel the significance of the month of March within the book series and the iconic movie adaptation. In this episode, we explore that infamously inaccurate date from the movie that has us scratching our heads, the date of Sally's testimony: March 8, 1998. How could that have possibly taken place after the summer solstice? The Stinas piece together a timeline and wonder what the writers of the film could have possibly been thinking. We'll also chat about the birth & death days of some of our beloved book characters and ponder why author Alice Hoffman deems March 21 "The Unluckiest Day of the Year". HEY WITCH HEY! We are so excited to debut our first Song-i-Sode of Season 2 and our last of 2023! This next installation of our SONG-i-SODE series is Session #6! Today we are talking about another one of our Practical Magic inspired original songs called "One Green Eye, One Blue"! This song comes off the heels of Episode 59: a character analysis we did for our favorite pancake flipping man of the law, Officer Gary Hallet, as well as Episode 60 which was dedicated to Gary's rare eye condition known as Heterochromia, hence the inspiration for today's song! This original song is Gary's admission to Sally that despite his refusal to believe in fate, there is in fact something mysteriously magical about her. The Stinas as they revisit their notes & lyrics and chat about how they wrote this Doo-wop style love song! We'll be dissecting our original work verse by verse, draft by draft, and take you on the creative journey of how we wrote the song from start to finish. We'll also explore original versions of the song, scratch demos, and lyrics that just didn't make the cut. Then sit back and relax as Justina treats us to a small live performance! Michael Nyman is an English "Minimalist" composer who was hired to compose the score for the film Practical Magic. However, just before the film's release in theaters his score was ultimately scrapped and replaced by the score as we now know it by Alan Silvestri. The original pressings of the Warner's soundtrack CD featured two cues from Nyman's rejected score. When he was replaced by Alan Silvestri, the soundtrack was re-pressed and Nyman's cues were replaced by two (shorter) Silvestri cues. In today's episode, The Stinas not only discuss this composition kerfuffle, they also deep dive on the successes and failures of the veteran composer, whose work has seemingly gone severely under-appreciated in the American film market. In an amazing twist of fate, one of Nyman's rejected cues from the Practical Magic film resulted in a magical collaboration with an indie artist, that gave new life & meaning to the once disregarded composition! With this episode, we hope to shine a spotlight on the life and career of Michael Nyman. So join us as we marvel at his amazing accomplishments and accolades, reinforcing the notion that our failures do not define us! WARNING: SPOILERS ABOUND! "It's going to be you and me living in a big house... these two old biddies with all these cats" In the episode, The Stinas deep dive into the complex concept of "Spinsters" and a subjective look at "the child-free woman." This term also historically referred to unmarried women who exceeded the typical marriage age, often carrying a societal stigma. We explore the etymology, the evolution of the term, and its connotations of age, marital status, and expectations. The Stinas acknowledge the presence of the "Spinster" trope in the Practical Magic film, and analyze the many characters in the book who may qualify as such! How does the term resonate with the Owens women? We ponder a centuries old question that begs to be answered: Why does the term typically go hand in hand with witches? Contrasting the conventional "Maiden, Mother, Crone" archetype, we also examine the empowering image of "Eternal Virgin Goddesses" like Hestia, Artemis, Iphigeneia, and Athena. We explore the portrayal of spinsters in media, uncover stereotypes, and discuss the term's reclamation by single women. This discussion highlights the strength and resilience of women who have forged paths that defy societal norms, offering a compelling insight into the changing narrative surrounding the term "Spinster". "DATURA STRAMONIUM!" The Stinas are back at it again with another Magick & Lore episode! In this "killer" episode, we'll talk all about this poisonous and invasive weed that has James Hawkins wanted for murder in the book. This baneful herb is not prevalent in the film, however the Stinas speculate on whether or not Gillian may have been using it in the scene which is the center of their "controversial" astral travel theory! We learn about the origins of the herb's more common name "Jimsonweed" and its ties to a rather deplorable incident involving our militia and a bit of boiled salad.
