This week we sit down and discuss some recent fishing trips and some of the factors that influence success both on the water and in the deer woods. Have you ever heard of the solunar theory? Or how about those calendars that indicate the “good days” to be out fishing are hunting. Yes, most of us have seen them. However, I've personally never given much thought to charts that “predict” good hunting and fishing. I feel any day I have a chance to get out hunting or fishing is a good time to go

Today Robin hears how Dennis Mckiver's life saving, death-defying story concludes.Ever wonder what it's like treating a medical emergency in the middle of a enormous angry ocean? Why poachers hate it when fish & game work nights? And how it feels to have your parachute fail while falling at terminal velocity... more than one time?Dennis answers all (and more) in the final episode of this double-parter. Thanks again to Dennis for all the wild stories!
A man who's had more than his fair share of close calls in the wild — it's perhaps unsurprising that Dennis McKiver has a mountain of stories to tell. From farm-town life south of Sacramento, to his military days across the world, to a career spent chasing poachers for California fish and game, Dennis shares all in the first of two episodes on The Wild Dispatch. He also happens to be a local member of the hunter-ed squad, and introduced Robin to the concept of bow-hunting.Thanks again to Dennis for sharing his skills and stories with us!

On today's episode I talk with Brandi Scott, who was referred to me by our funny friend Colin from California. Brandi is an absolute badass from Central Texas who has a lineage in the drag racing industry, competes in tournaments as a professional fisherman, and has persevered through some difficult life challenges. We dive into a few political issues, and the reality of where these beliefs come from, and how just because you may have a differing of opinion, that doesn't define your overall character. Brandi and I are also in similar situations of long distance relationships, and just talk out how we deal with the realities of the situation and how to make them work best. This is a common situation a lot of drivers and blue collar workers have that not a lot of people see the realities of. To the point in which social media will "trend" the desire for dating a blue collar worker. This conversation goes back to what I said at the start of 2023, of wanting to have real conversations with real people. And not just real people, but people different from me, who grew up somewhere else with a different life experience. Personally, I think that's what we can use more of to make this world a better place, talking to one another again, especially outside of the comments section. You can find Brandi on IG and tiktok @lonestarlady92

This week is a special week to folks from Ohio and the state up North. Each year the football teams come together for an epic battle on the gridiron. We know this isn't a football show, but when we have the opportunity to bring a couple Buckeye legends on the show to discuss outdoor activities, as well as a game between two undefeated giants, you just do it. This week on the show we talk with Anthony Schlegel and Jeff Heuerman (and Kyle Waters, friend of Jeff's) to discuss hunting, fishing, and football. For real information that will help you afield next week, we also have Andrew Buck Michael from WSYX in Columbus. Andrew is a long time Ohioian that spends a lot of time outside and knows the importance of an accurate forecast for those outdoor activities. He gives us a run down of what the gun season should like, as well as the rest of the year. He discusses thermals and a few other topics during the segment. Paul and Andrew have returned from the first deer camp of the year. One doe in the freezer, and more to come on that trip. As Paul mentions, we made a new “friend”, Terrance, who may or may not be a 300 lb black bear, as well as many other great memories. Happy Thanksgiving, as we are truly thankful for all of you out there listening to the show!! Good luck in the gun woods, and be safe!! And of course GO BUCKEYES!!! What does “From Scratch” cooking mean to you? In modern times it's come to mean making food at home, instead of ordering take-out or packaged snacks. Today, we take “from scratch” to it's true meaning which is hunting, gathering, fishing and then preparing the food, exploring how that looks around the world, through the work of film maker and story teller, David Moscow. David Moscow is the creator, executive producer, and host of From Scratch and co-author of a book by the same name. He made his feature film debut at age thirteen in Big, starring as the young Tom Hanks; years later, he starred with Christian Bale in Newsies. He has appeared in dozens of films, television shows, and theater productions over a thirty-five year career. Most recently, David founded the production company UnLTD Pictures. He has executive produced more than twenty feature films and he also develops mixed-income sustainably green apartment buildings - in his spare time! I hope you enjoy our exploration and his stories, from FROM SCRATCH: Adventures in Hunting, Fishing, and Foraging on a Fragile Planet.
