In today's episode, I'm going to talk about my own personal journey into deciding to show up as a leader. Because in times like this, leaders are needed more than ever. What You Will Learn In This Episode: How we learn to suppress our natural abilities out of fear of judgement What life events stood out for me in terms of deciding to show up as a leader What happens when nobody is leading and you want everyone to like you How visualising yourself as a leader can change your life How your mindset stands in your way of becoming a leader I want you to reflect on what it means to be a leader for you. And if you're not stepping into leadership right now, what is it that's holding you back? What is it you want to create? How do you want the world to look like? And you can lead the way with that. Even the most aesthetically pleasing spaces are nothing without a carefully chosen supporting light to view them in. However, lighting is often treated as an afterthought, addressed late in the build after formwork and trims, leaving little freedom of choice or room for creativity. It needs to be thought of early on in the build so that it can complement the architecture and create the moment required. Lighting designers are crucial for this. French actor and director Eric Cantona said it best: “An artist is someone with the gift to light up a dark room”. Our artist this week is Danielle Mastro, the lighting maestro from Lights Lights Lights with 13 years of industry experience. This bulb whisperer is physically unable to darken anyone’s doorway (unless of course, it needed it). She joins BuildHer’s Rebeka to talk about the importance of lighting and when devote time to it in your build. LINKS AND RESOURCES: Lights Lights Lights website. Lights Lights Lights Instagram. Episode 6 sees the Building with BuildHer team Rebeka and Kribashini talking with protégé and Master BuildHer Yolanda Aarons. By day, she demolishes cancer as a radiation therapist, and by night (you guessed it) she demo’s houses. With many of her waking hours tied up in cancer care, Yolanda satisfies her renovation lust in between jobs by indulging in nearly all renovation-related TV shows available to the public and occasionally living vicariously through the construction and structural analyses prevalent in her sibling engineer’s life. Renovating was always a big part of her family's pastime growing up and the apple has fallen straight down the quarter-turn floating staircase to land right at the freshly painted doorstep. Her latest project - a demolition, restoration and renovation at 123 Clarke St Northcote Victoria - affectionally labelled @123_clarke and beautifully documented on Instagram, is proving to be a challenging yet satisfying and emotional job that Yolanda confesses she will find it difficult to move on from. Join Rebeka, Kribashini and Yolanda as they discuss 123 Clarke St and being a female builder (and BuildHer) in general. TOPICS WE DISCUSSED: Establishing trust and a good rapport with your builder Sticking to timelines and acknowledging the importance of a give-and-take Using the emotional aspect to your advantage when establishing build schedules Honesty with tradespeople to establish the reasoning behind site practices and timelines The importance of a tidy job site LINKS AND RESOURCES: Yolanda’s Instagram for her 123 Clarke St project. In an uncertain world, entrepreneurs like Nigel Bennett are our best hope for the future.   At a young age, Nigel was shocked to witness first-hand the real impact of oil spills on our natural world. After almost being shot down by FARC guerrillas on the Venezuela-Colombia border and being forced to escape Egypt while working for his father’s oil spill contingency planning company, he decided to break away and start Aqua-Guard Spill Response. Aqua-Guard now provides equipment and services that protect water, the planet’s most precious resource, in over 100 countries.   His extraordinary journey from dyslexic high school graduate to global entrepreneur, adventurer and philanthropist have much to teach us about responsibility, freedom and the bravery that surfaces in moments when everything is on the line.   In Nigel’s book Take That Leap - Risking It All for What Really Matters, he recounts his unanticipated adventures as an entrepreneur, emerging philanthropist and always avid outdoorsman. Readers get a peek inside Nigel’s head as he negotiates deals with the big boys and wrestles with the myths surrounding work/life balance and being an entrepreneur.   He takes readers along the crazy challenges of simultaneously launching a startup and a family all the way through to the even zanier challenges of becoming a steward of Pachamama (Mother Nature). He shares how he tested his limits in extreme outdoor adventures, built homes for the homeless with his wife and children, and discovered his big “Why?” with the indigenous people of the Amazon.   If your appetite for adventure isn't whetted after listening to today's conversation with Nigel Bennett, I'm not sure what could!   Enjoy the show. :-)   LINKS AND RESOURCES   Nigel's Website TruBeach App Gift ADD App Show notes Halftime Newsletter Nominate a Guest for the Show We always appreciate your rating and review on iTunes!
