That Triathlon Show”, Mikael Eriksson. Designing Time‑Efficient Training Programs for Strength and Hypertrophy”. With the race season on the horizon, I want to share with you some tips on how you can improve your running. You might think that means running faster or more often. Actually, triathlon running is about being as efficient as possible especially in longer distance events where the goal is to slow down as little as possible. Good technique will also help you to stay injury free and run later into your life.   In a recent podcast I spoke with physiotherapist Alison Rose, and she mentioned that 75-80% of the injuries she treats in triathletes are running related. The top 3 causes are inappropriate training, poor technique and lack of strength. Last week's podcast was with knee specialist Damian Buck, and he shared the information that running doesn't necessarily cause knee problems, and there are many things we can all do to maintain good knee health so we can continue running until we choose to stop.   My guest this week is the highly respected running coach Bobby McGee. Bobby firmly believes that the key to better running is mechanical efficiency. We talk about: biomechanics posture the importance of dynamic mobility and running drills run specific strength work  specific advice for older runners on how you can adapt your training to stay healthy and maintain your performances (this is near the end of the episode, and you might find his guidance surprising) To find out more about Bobby please visit him on any of these spots: Website bobbymcgee.com Instagram @bobbymcgeerunning Bobby McGee is a triathlon expert on the AnyQuestion.com   He does a lot of work with strength coach Matt Pendola (Pendola Project) who he mentioned in the podcast. They have developed the RunFORM course (as a listener you can use the code BOBBY10 to get a 10% discount).   If you would like a training plan developed by Bobby McGee with Gwen Jorgensen you can find them on TrainingPeaks.   Bobby also highly recommended the following books and podcasts: Magical Running: A unique path to running fulfilment by Bobby McGee on  Endure: Alex Hutchison The Rise of Superman: Steven Kotler Thinking Body, Dancing Mind Chungliang Al Huang & Jerry Lynch Greenlights Matthew McConaughey Thinking, Fast & Slow Daniel Kahneman   Bobby also recommends Mikael Eriksson's Scientific Triathlon podcast    Join our SWAT/High Performance Human tribe using this link, with a happiness guarantee! Today joining us is Mikael Eriksson to talk about some of the key components we should be focusing on in our triathlon journey through this Pandemic in order to get us primed and ready for Challenge Roth 2021 (or any Long Distance Triathlon in 2021). I’ll admit. My Training Peaks fitness chart was looking insanely similar to the stock market. We had the unstoppable bull run at all time highs in the market at the same time I was at peak fitness in my crucial build up to Challenge Roth 2020. But right when the pandemic struck, both the stock market and my fitness levels took a huge nose dive! I think from a psychological level it’s hard for people to look ahead and put all your eggs in one basket through uncertainty. And for me I felt it was more important to enjoy the family time throughout this uncertainty rather then spend those hours in the pain cave. However, we do know the race season WILL come back one day. So, whether you’re still hard into training, or, if you’re still in “off-season mode” then I wanted to find a way to help you navigate confidently with an actionable plan to get you ready for your 2021 race season. That’s why I am pumped to be chatting with Mikael Eriksson on several topics including like how we can create a half or full triathlon distance training plan that’s not based around a race season, and how we can use this downtime to our advantage to build foundational fitness and optimize our health so that we can be more fit then ever going into our next race build up. We chat on things like training builds, polarized training, tapers, race specificity, Z2 training, 80/20 vs Polarized and so much more. We’ll also touch base on how to avoid and recognize over-training and how to be properly fueling during your daily training sessions. We discuss Challenge Roth 2021 being just over 1 year away and how we can safely and optimally navigate training without having to rely on a 2020 race season.

Mikael Eriksson, a Swedish-speaking Finn living in Lisbon, Portugal, began in the sport of Triathlon in 2015, right after graduating from university and working as an engineer at a medical startup. Having been a recreational runner for a few years, he encountered a chronic knee injury that made him cross train with swimming and biking. During the 9 month rehab, he'd fallen in love with Triathlon. In the short span of 4 years, Mikael has progressed rather quickly with great results in Sprint & Olympic distance National Champs and recently also winning his AG (25-29) at his very first go at the 70.3 distance. Along the way, with a background in physics, engineering, & science, he found that most of the content he was consuming had a lot of conjuncture to it, so he decided to create the kind of content he missed himself. This is when he began his website and newsletter 'Scientific Triathlon' (https://www.scientifictriathlon.com) and his (now popular) Triathlon Podcast 'That Triathlon Show'. Now, he has quit his engineering job, moved to the more vibrant location of Portugal, and his current lifestyle revolves completely around his passion and craze - Triathlon. - Show Notes: https://www.humansoftriathlon.com/hotpodcast-scientifictriathlon - Podcast Feedback Survey (Please take 5 minutes to leave us your honest and anonymous feedback on the show): http://bit.ly/hotpodcastsurvey - Hosts: Swapneel Chouhan & Carlos (Charles) Galan - Intro/Outro Music: Produced by Vasil Zguri at SoundPulse
