Do you know how much fluid you lose through sweating in an hour? How about the amount of sodium? Sweat rates and concentration can vary hugely - from 300ml per hour to 1500ml per hour. And 200mg of sodium to 1500mg+ per hour. Not knowing how much liquid, and what strength of electrolytes to be consuming while you're racing puts you at a very real risk of - at best underperforming, at worst a trip to the medical tent. Why risk hundreds of hours of training for something that can be taken care of relatively easily? Andy Blow, founder of Precison Fuel & Hydration talks us through the importance of correct, personalised hydration specifically for IRONMAN athletes. PF&H are the new hydration partners for IRONMAN Europe, and will be providing on-course hydration at all European IRONMAN events throughout 2024. * * * * * * * * SPONSORS * * * * * * * * Like what you heard in this show? Welcome to Episode 87 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring Colette Vartanian (MS RD), a sports dietitian and the Athlete Care Manager over at Skratch Labs. Today, Colette and I are chatting about personalized hydration. It's been awhile since I did a dedicated hydration episode, so I figured it was time to revisit this important topic, especially as the weather warms up. We discuss key hydration concepts and strategies, including how to identify fluid and sodium needs during exercise, the role of thirst, prehydration vs hyperhydration/preloading, various methods of sweat rate and sweat composition testing, how to adjust your hydration plan for different weather conditions, and SO much more. If you're fairly new to my podcast or you just happened to miss it, Episode 52 with Andy Blow, the co-founder of Precision Hydration, is another great episode that deep dives into hydration. There's some overlap with today's show, but we also cover many other aspects of hydration, including a more in depth discussion of hydration basics, so it's a great starting point if you're looking to gain a better understanding of this topic. FYI, this episode is NOT sponsored by Skratch, but I really like their products and always enjoy connecting with my dietitian colleagues. Sports scientists Andy Blow and Emily Arrell join us from Precision Fuel and Hydration to help age group athletes understand the three key levers of performance: Hydration, Electrolytes and Fueling.  PFH have built up a bank of over 200 case studies of professional athletes competing at Ironman and 70.3 events, logging their carbohydrate, electrolyte and hydration intakes. This bank of information is fully searchable on their website, so athletes can search for events and conditions like theirs to use as a starting point for planning their own fuel and hydration planning. They help answer the following questions: Why do you need electrolytes? What are the recommendations for athletes who haven't had a sweat test? Should age groupers be trying to increase their carbohydrate intake, and if so, how should they go about it? Are there any potential pitfalls? What trends did they see in elite triathletes, and what can we take away from that? We cover the science of calorie intake, electrolyte intake, and fluid intake, as well as some personal experience and stories from the endurance world, to help you work out the best plan for you. This is a conversation with Andy Blow, ex-pro triathlete, from Precision Hydration. Here are some key reading points, and links to various calculators and blog posts mentioned in the show. The 3 Levers for fueling endurance performanceThe 3 Levers for fueling endurance performance - This could be a good starting point as Andy outlines the 3 acute costs of taking part in endurance exercise for an athlete, namely calories burned (mainly in the form of carbohydrate), sodium and fluid. The way to learn how to ‘pull the levers' correctly is to understand the ballpark levels of replacement that are usually needed for each one. You can further refine these levels on the basis of your own deeper knowledge of your personal requirements.Know Your NumbersHow much carbohydrate do athletes need to perform at their best? This blog helps athletes 'Know Their Numbers' and pull the 'carb' lever correctly by helping them understand how much carb they should be aiming to consume per hour for their activity and for the duration they're performing. And we've created a Quick Carb Calculator for athletes to take so that they can hit those numbers during training and racesOnce an athlete Knows Their Numbers, they'll need to consider how they're going to get those carbs on board and which energy products are right for them - will they use real food, gels, chews, isotonic drinks, bars? The decision on the best forms of carbs for them will come down to personal preferences and will require some trial and error during training.SponsorsLike what you heard in this interview? Welcome to episode 142 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! On this episode we share our last ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship-related conversation for a while. Joining us this week are friends of the pod Lars Finanger and Andy Blow, A.K.A. Team Old Man Speed. Like the band in Blues Brothers where a motley crew of musicians come together for one incredible show, Lars and Andy teamed up to put on a Swimrun performance. Spoiler alert: they had a great day on the archipelago a few weeks back and it was great to chat with them about how the race unfolded for them. But first...Training UpdateTraining is still in the “do what you feel like doing” stage but we foresee a mini-build coming soon for our next race, SwimrunNC, taking place in just four weeks. (If you're racing SwimrunNC, make sure to check out our course preview episode.)ShoutoutsThis week we are shouting out Sheila and Team Flying Squirrels. She is Chipper's Mother in Law and has been a die hard supporter of us since we started the show. Dare I say that no other family member has listened to as many shows as she has? Anyway, it just so happened that she was in Orcas Island this past weekend on vacation and heard that there was a Swimrun happening from Team Flying Squirrels on the ferry over. In a classic Sheila move, she asked them if they had heard about the Low Tide Boyz! Rock star!Feats of EnduranceThis week we have two Feats of Endurance winners: First, Abby Rose (a previous winner) just swam the Pailolo Channel over the weekend, an 8.4 mile swim from the island of Maui to the island of Moloka'i. Second, Steve Henn wins with just an epic Strava title, “Morning ride to Aphroditie's temple,” while on vacation in Greece. Strong work all around!Bonus shoutout to everyone that raced Ödyssey Swimrun Orcas Island over the weekend. The FOMO level was extremely high. That first swim though! Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWe're keeping it short this week. One of our favorite races, Ödyssey Swimrun Orcas Island, took place over the weekend and the weather looked amazing. For more details on how the race unfolded, we have another edition of Race Director Reports with Ödyssey co-founder and today's guest, Lars Finanger. Enjoy!Yes, join us at Ödyssey Swimrun Austin to close out the USA's Swimrun season. We can't recommend this race enough. It's great for first-timers and experienced Swimrunners alike.Over in Europe, Italy held their Aquaticrunner Solo Swimrunner “World Championships.” It looked like a great day out there. Special shout out to friend of the pod, Christian Götz, for a stout second place finish in the “non-italian” division just a few weeks after racing ÖTILLÖ. That is it for this week. Feel free to reach out and let us know if there's anything that you'd like for us to mention on the show.UpdatesCheck out our latest episode of Gear Talk with Annie and Brooke from the Swimrun Labs where we breakdown our gear choices at ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship, what we wish we had done differently, and so much more.Celebrations are in order! A few weeks ago we surpassed 100,000 downloads and we are honestly humbled that so many folks have checked out the show. When we started this thing, our mission was to help grow the sport of Swimrun but that does not happen without the support of all the fans that have been tuning in for our brand of super niche content. Thank you so much for sticking with us!A new milestone means new stickers! Our friend Sebastian, A.K.A. @the_radberg designed the new sticker and we're super stoked to share it with you all. #nospoilers If you want a free sticker or two, head over to lowtideboyz.com/stickers and fill out the form.Team Old Man SpeedWhen a couple of amazing athletes (former pro/could still be pro triathletes) decide to race ÖTILLÖ together and then name themselves Team Old Man Speed, you roll your eyes a bit but you don't have to be a couple of amateur journalists like the Löw Tide Böyz to know that there's a good story there. Both previous guests of the show, Lars and Andy love Swimrun and jumped at the chance of racing together…once their wives said that it was ok. In this conversation we get their race report on what was an amazing day on the Archipelago while chronicling their decades long friendship, and sharing a lot of laughs along the way. This was a great chat and we know that you will love it as much as we did. Enjoy! That's it for this week's show. Welcome to Episode 52 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast! I am really excited about my guest today - sports scientist Andy Blow. In his younger days, Andy was an elite-level triathlete, finishing in the top-10 of Ironman and 70.3 races, as well as winning an Xterra World title. He also previously worked as the Team Sports Scientist for the Benetton and Renault Formula 1 teams, and remains an adviser to the Porsche Human Performance Center at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix.Andy's struggles with sports nutrition in his own race experiences ultimately led him to set up his company, Precision Fuel and Hydration, which specializes in helping athletes discover their unique hydration needs and create individualized fueling and hydration strategies for training and competitions. I absolutely loved the discussion that we had today. It's a long one, because I got Andy to indulge my endless curiosity about the world of Formula 1, so if you're at all interested in that, you're in for a treat. He also is an expert in hydration, and we spent a lot of time delving into this huge, important topic. Andy has been on many other shows going through these concepts in detail, but hydration is such a key topic that so many athletes find confusing that I thought it would be worth sharing once again on my platform as well.In full disclosure, I received free sports nutrition samples from Andy's team in advance of this recording, and I will be receiving a free sweat sodium test (as part of my client work, I always like to test out products/services), but I have not received any payment from his company. I hope you get some good takeaways from our chat, and if you are hungry for more on this topic, I strongly encourage you to check out Precision Fuel & Hydration's website and especially their knowledge hub, which is packed with great info.Without further ado, please enjoy my conversation with Andy Blow about all things hydration as well as Formula 1 sports nutrition.  Links & Resources:Follow Precision Fuel and Hydration on Instagram and FacebookWhy sodium is crucial to athletes performing at their bestHow to START hydrated and why that's so important. How to tell if you're a salty sweaterDifferent types of sports drink and when to use themThe different types of Sweat Test and why you should have oneFuel & Hydration PlannerOther Announcements:Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on Apple Podcasts Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback?
