In this episode, we interview Richard McAinsh, co-founder, technical director, and designer of Ku Cycle. His mission was to design bikes and performance solutions to change cycle sport forever -- rethinking bike design from the ground up while offering the perfect fit for the rider. The Ku Cycle is a super aero bike with a custom fit for riders of all shapes and sizes. We discuss Richard's background, designing of the TF1 Ku Cycle, bike fitting and customization, comparisons to other top-end bikes, and much more. Enjoy and thanks for joining us, Richard! For more information please visit the Ku Cycle website: https://www.ku-cycle.com/ --- Show Notes: Richard's Background @ 0:03 Richard shares his background as a design engineer, starting in aircraft design and then transitioning into the motorsports industry, working for teams like Jaguar, Benetton, and Ferrari for over a decade. He then started his own design consultancy, which led him to work with bicycle brands like 3T. Designing the TF1 Bike @ 4:09 Richard explains his approach to designing the TF1 triathlon bike, focusing first on optimizing the rider's aerodynamic position before designing the bike around it. This involved extensive testing and analysis to determine the ideal frame geometry and component placement. Bike Fit and Customization @ 32:06 Richard discusses the bike fit process, where they collect key measurements from the rider to custom-build each TF1 frame. This allows them to accommodate a wide range of rider sizes and body types while maintaining an optimal aerodynamic position. Comparison to Other Top Bikes @ 57:09 Richard acknowledges that the TF1 competes with some of the top triathlon bikes on the market, like the Cervelo P5 and Giant Trinity, and shares his perspective on how the TF1 stacks up against these industry leaders. Athlete-Centric Approach @ 58:59 Richard emphasizes the team's focus on athlete performance and experience, rather than just selling bikes. He discusses the importance of the personal interactions and support they provide to TF1 owners, going beyond just the product. Next Generation Program @ 1:03:07 The team has a "Next Gen" program to support up-and-coming age group athletes, providing them with TF1 bikes and support, with the goal of helping them achieve podium finishes and showcase the bike's capabilities. Future Developments @ 1:07:59 When asked about potential future upgrades to the TF1, Richard hints that there may be something else in the works, suggesting more innovation to come from the brand.

Dan Bigham once said something along the lines of, get aero and train the body to sustain it: it's easier than getting stronger. As much as that makes sense, it's also not how we have typically thought of bike fitting. Our focus has typically been on comfort, power production, perhaps symmetry. But like so much in cycling, how we think about bike fitting is changing. In this episode of Performance Process episode Ronan is joined by Daniel Schade, CEO of Gebiomized and the fitter working with Bigham at at the Ineos Grenadiers to find a balance in those aero positions , to discuss how bike fitting is changing and the pros and cons of some of the current trends.Escape Collective's podcasts are made possible by our members.
Today's guest is Ken Ballhause, a specialist and world-leading expert in bike mechanics and position. Ken focuses on biomechanics and science to maximise comfort and performance on the bike. Ken holds a bachelor's in exercise science and health science, and as you'll hear in this episode, has a thorough understanding of the biomechanics of the human body and what is required to find the optimal balance of aerodynamics, power output, and comfort. His work both in bike fitting and the development of optimal bike components is now being utilised by many of the world's top cyclists and cycling teams. This was another fantastic discussion around what are the priorities with a bike fit, what are the most important questions you need to be asking about your own position, and what you need to learn about your own biomechanics. Getting older is one of the certainties of life. Aging affects us all in different ways, partly due to genetics but mostly to do with lifestyle choices. In recent months I've been reading and writing about this a lot more, because I'm trying to find my own solutions to combat the inevitable as best I can. The physios tell me that common issues they see in older athletes are reduced flexibility and range of movement which results in reduced ability to turn and look over the shoulder, a standard movement when driving or riding your bike. Increased tightness in the lower back, which means bending forward is more challenging. Tighter hips which means that squatting or lunging is more difficult. Fortunately, cycling is a lot easier on the body than running and doesn't require the same mobility as swimming. Nevertheless, reductions in mobility and flexibility can still present challenges when cycling. This is why I asked expert bike fitter Phil Burt to chat with me about adjustments that older riders could make to their bike set up to make cycling a little bit more comfortable, and therefore more enjoyable. This is a great conversation with Phil, and we cover topics such as: being aero vs comfortable (11:00) shorter crank lengths (12:00) short nose saddles (36:30) pedal with more float(38:30) why disc brakes allow you to choose fatter tyres (46:20) To find out more about Phil and the services he offers, please visit him at: Website PhilBurtInnovation Facebook - Philburtinnov Twitter @PhilBurtInnov Instagram PhilBurtInnov YouTube Phil Burt Innovation Linked In PhilBurtInnov In this video, Phil explains his new approach to bike fit, performance, and comfort Phil also recommended these books: Start with Why by Simon Sinek Breath by James's Nestor To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please email her at Info@BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. Key Takeaways • Cycling does not have to be uncomfortable. A bike fit will adjust the three points of contact so that they do not cause undue strain and pressure. • The way a person moves off the bike will mimic the way they move on a bike, so doing a functional assessment alongside a bike fit is a key component of pain reduction. • Improving your cycling performance starts with the breath. If you are not using oxygen efficiently, you will become fatigued more quickly. Have you been wanting to improve your cycling performance but just do not know where to start? Unless you are a professional cyclist, you may not have ever heard of a bike fit and may even think that discomfort is a normal part of cycling. In today's episode, Dr. Andrew speaks with Dr. Tim Tracy, a Board-certified orthopedic physical therapist with a specific focus on cycling-related issues, cycling performance, and bike fitting. Dr. Tim explains the importance of a bike fit for not only improving performance, but reducing pain and injuries as well. Many people think that cycling is supposed to be uncomfortable, but in actuality, it does not have to be. When you have a well fitted bike and the proper cycling technique, you will be able to cycle for longer with less physical strain on your body. Since every person's body moves differently, Dr. Tim combines a bike fit with a functional assessment in order to see where each clients' baseline is. Learning techniques for pelvis stabilization, changing positions while riding, and even just diaphragmatic breathing can be game-changers in overall performance and reduction in pain, strain, and fatigue. A professional bike fit is an incredibly useful tool for any cyclist wanting to reduce discomfort and improve overall performance. If you notice that you are having a lot of lower back or hip pain while riding or afterward, consider seeing someone like Dr. Tim for a bike fit. Quotes • “If people aren't experiencing significant issues, then they're just leaving a lot on the table as far as the discomfort they have that they kind of brush aside and think that that's a normal part of cycling.” (11:21-11:36 | Dr. Tim) • “We all are going to move differently, and those unique differences need to be looked at functionally. How people move off the bike will often mirror how they move on the bike.” (15:59-16:12 | Dr. Tim) • “Until we can have you moving well, making the most and have an awareness about how to interact with the seat and the handlebars and the pedals, there's going to be some things that aren't going to be fully resolved.” (22:18-22:28 | Dr. Tim) • “When you change one thing on a bike fit, you change everything.” (32:45-32:47 | Dr. Tim) • “The most likely energy-saving benefit will come from a bike fit versus spending infinite endless amounts of money on carbon shiny objects.” (36:49-36:59 | Dr. Tim) Links Connect with Dr. Tim Tracy: Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physiotimt/ Connect with Physio Room: Website | https://physioroomco.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/dr.andrewfix/ Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Bike fit has come a long way. The old methods - tape measures, plumb lines and guesswork - still have their place but getting the right size bike is only half the battle. Dan Cavallari catches up with one of the recognised experts in the field. Todd Carver of Specialized and Retül has been helping riders become more comfortable and efficient for years. Retül uses 3D motion capture technology to examine how the rider actually moves on the bike. He tells Dan about the latest developments and why a proper bike-fit is just the start of the process. Hand numbness is among the top 3 most common complaints we get from athletes, right behind (pun intended) 2 other numbnesses that are way less tolerable. Coach Dale has fit hundreds of bikes (over 600 as of May 2022) in the last 13 years and has seen all kinds of causes of hand numbness. And many times, the fix is rather counter intuitive. So today we'll break down the steps Coach D takes when someone comes through the door complaining their hands go numb on the bike. The truth is, you have to be prepared to look at the fit on the whole in order to really solve the issue. Why? Because once you change one thing, it can change several others. If you'd like hit the easy button and book a fit with Coach D, you can always get on his schedule by going to bpccoaching.com
