Hey schön, dass Du auch bei der neuen Folge wieder mit dabei bist. Eine Folge, auf die wir ein paar Monate warten durften. Denn zu Gast ist heute kein Geringerer als Dan Lorang. Für alle, die Dan noch nicht kennen, möchten wir seine beeindruckende Kariere als Trainer kurz zusammenfassen. Dan ist sein über 20 Jahren der Trainer von Anne Haug, hat lange Jahre mit Jan Frodeno zusammengearbeitet und durfte im letzten Jahr mit dem Sieg von Lucy Charles-Barclay seinen 8. Ironman Weltmeistertitel als Trainer feiern. Auch, wenn es Dan mit Sicherheit fern liegt, diese Siege als seine zu reklamieren, hat er zu diesen und unzähligen weiteren mit seiner Arbeit beigetragen. Hauptberuflich ist Dan jedoch Head of Performance (aus meiner Sicht eine der coolsten Berufsbeschreibungen überhaupt) beim deutschen Radteam Bora - hanserohe und kümmert sich dort um alles rund ums Training. Wir wollten natürlich möglichst viel über seine Arbeit als Trainer wissen und ihm selbstverständlich auch den einen oder anderen Tipp für dich entlocken. Präsentiert von Absolute Run Laufstil Würzburg und we.are.enduranceIn der heutigen Folge habe ich mit Therese Feuersinger, eine österreichische Profitriathletin auf der Kurzdistanz und Zehnte bei der WM 2020 auf der Sprintdistanz, getroffen. Therese ist ein sehr freundlicher und ehrgeiziger Mensch, der in den letzten beiden Jahren viel über sich lernen konnte.Ich unterhalte mich mit Therese über ihren langen Aufenthalt im Trainingslager in Thailand, ihren ersten erfolgreichen Wettkampfeinsatz im Jahr 2023 in Hongkong und wir kommen auf ihren neuen Trainer, nämlich keinen Geringeren als Dan Lorang, zu sprechen. Im Anschluss berichtet Therese über ihre schwere Phase in den Jahren 2021 und 2022 nach einer Corona-Infektion mit Post-Covid und nach einer Schulterverletzung, was sie sportlich sehr zurückwarf. Nachdem sie zwischenzeitlich Triathlon sogar mit etwas Negativem assoziiert hatte, entschied sie sich letztlich für eine Schulteroperation, die ihr glücklicherweise helfen konnte. Lucy absorbed the training very well - increasing her aerobic conditioning - "We need to build the base" with a polarized approach - The main goal was Kona - an altitude camp before St.George - Dan has developed Lucy as a Triathlete - Was Dan Surprised with Lucy's performance in IM 70.3 World Champs? 46.50 - Anne Haug – Roth (shame it was short due to road works... we will never know), 7.53.48 with a 31.36min win over Laura Siddall. 12 min lead off-bike over Langridge and Crowley, 2.43hr run. Thoughts on Anne's performance in Roth? Anne wasn't in a good place mentally before the race. What has changed with the training after 15 years? Anne did a 33min 10km road race last year. - She's a Ferrari - "we do a minimum amount of run training to optimize her performance" 54.45 - Jan Frodeno - 9 years with Jan - A target on his back - Collins Cup – fastest overall (20 sec in front of Gustav)? What else is there for you and Jan? 1.06.00 - Collecting Data - What data - metabolic profile collecting at the beginning - Adaptation, Polarized (VO2 and base), Specific (Strength endurance), Race-specific - slowly increase, it's a step by step process over years - 1.12.40 - Retests in standardized training like an 8x 1km run - Dan doesn't like to stop training to test - he uses training to test and compare - You have to be honest with your athlete - You have to be careful in the words you choose 1.17.30 - Example of VO2 work - using hills for 8 x30 sec but build to 4 x 4min - what do you want to achieve and where is the athlete at the moment? How many times a week - 4-5 sessions split over the three sessions. The rest of the training is easy - VO2 max is NOT sprinting it's a controlled intensity 1.23.00 - Recovery - measuring using Heart Rate Variability and Sleep quality - each athlete is different and they can choose how they monitor - Glucose monitoring it can be interesting to watch 1.26.00 Conclude - Two questions 1. What is one tip you have for people on how to optimize their life? "Ask yourself, 'Are you happy doing what you're doing?" 2. Arild Tveiten is Head Coach and Sports Director for Triathlon Norway. He has been key to Norway developing as a triathlon nation, from Kristian Blummenfelt's gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics to 70.3 World Championship successes for Gustav Iden. We pick his brains about coaching Kristian and Gustav and we find out more information about preparing for the Sub7 attempt, and why he believes Kristian Blummenfelt has a great chance. You'll hear: 08:25 Start of the interview with Arild Tveiten 10:45 Arild Tveiten says 'We can repeat our medal again in Paris, but I'm not sure it will be Kristian Blummenfelt again. If we are able to fight for two medals, we will be really really happy and a medal in the mixed relay would be the ultimate dream for us." 17:05 At what point did the coaches think it would be Kristian and not Gustav winning Olympic gold? Kristian was just one step ahead. He had no sickness, no setbacks. 18:45 How do you manage competing athletes who are all vying for the same thing? We try to avoid them racing each other in training "You need to compare yourself to yourself and not to the others. You need to pay attention to each athlete and their individual needs, but they also know that they need each other to bring out the best in themselves" 22:45 How Arild approaches a bad race with his athletes. 26:50 We talk about the Norwegian triathlon suits. "I knew they would be controversial, but I love them. We had actually been racing in the Tokyo suit all season, but just in a different colour." 28:45 We talk about Arild's training for Norseman. He got a black T-shirt in 2005. "I have unfinished business with Norseman, I know my fitness level is completely different. But I need to do it and I need do something different for myself before we start the big build to Tokyo. I will coach myself and I know what to do and how to prepare for the race, but it is difficult to put the time in!" 32:00 "The sub7 project really excites me. You first think, it cannot be done. But I think Kristian can do it. I like that kind of challenge, because it challenges us to dig deeper into the science. The knowledge they are getting from it will benefit the whole team as we head to Paris. You need to dial in to the nutrition. You need a team of really strong riders, but at the end Kristian needs to run a 2.25 marathon and you don't do that unless you are really well prepared in training and you have your nutrition dialled in. A lot of the research they are doing now is getting better knowledge on that. But he still needs to run at least 10 minutes faster than he did in Cozumel. I can't believe how fast it is. You need to find some of the best professional cyclists in the world." 40:30 I don't think about what we have achieved, I just try to work with all of the athletes to help them be at the best level. That is my focus and when we get big results, I don't think about it. I am always looking forward, perhaps a bit too fast. But I am just moving forward all of the time. All of the coaches at the highest level are working every day. It is a lifestyle for us. Our sports scientist Olav Aleksandr is good friends with Dan Lorang and when you talk with other top coaches, everyone is thinking I need to get better knowledge. You always want to learn. And I think that is the driving force behind some of the best coaches. 45:00 No, I wasn't expecting to be in this position as coach of Norway. I was very uncertain if I should do it and the first 3 or 4 years I was thinking 'is this sustainable' but after a few years I'm thinking ok, it's ok. Dan Lorang's been labelled as 'The World's best Long Course coach." He guided both Jan Frodeno and Anne Haug to the Ironman World Championship title in 2019. Listen carefully - he might be softly spoken but he has some real nuggets in this chat. He also seems to be one of the World's nicest people too and it was such pleasure to chat to him. This year’s Tour de France is the most mountainous in history and in this episode, we are going to look at the epic climbs that decide this race. There are 29 categorised climbs, eight mountain stages, four summit finishes, and one mountain time trial, on the penultimate stage in the 2020 edition of the race. BORA-hansgrohe’s team leader Emmanuel Buchmann will be looking to contest the climbs at the front of this great race alongside the teams’ domestiques who will ensure he is in the best shape possible, conserving as much energy as he can, before the finale of each mountainous stage. We will hear from Emmanuel, and teammate Maximillian Schachmann about overcoming injuries, and their thoughts and tactics for the climbs in this route. We'll also hear from sports director Enrico Poitschke on the strategy, the tactics in the mountains, and how they have changed given the injuries sustained by the team before this year’s Tour. Dan Lorang talks about keeping the riders focused if they have suffered crashes, or if they are having a bad day and Peter Sagan shares what it’s like to be a sprinter in the most mountainous Tour, and how he manages the climbs, as well as having an in-depth look at some of the mountains on this year’s route.

We have a really exciting episode here on the Challenge Roth Road to Roth Podcast Series which includes a great interview with Jan Frodeno, Anne Haug, and Sarah True’s Coach; Dan Lorang. So for the first time listeners, a bit of a backstory here with the Road to Roth Series – at the beginning of August I announced that I’ll be doing my first full distance triathlon at Challenge Roth in 2020, and since then, I found that a lot of listeners were actually on a similar path; whether it was with Roth or another race; but they too were on their crazy journey to their first full distance triathlon and looking forward to hearing content specific to the full distance! Of course, never having actually done the distance before, I figured everyone could benefit the most in a series where I interview top professional triathletes and coaches that will be able to provide a ton of training tips specific to the full distance as well as give us the motivation and insight we need to help us maximize our performances come race day! Motivation and inspiration seems endless in this interview with Dan as he describes how he met and coached Anne Haug when she just started getting into Triathlon and how Jan came to him while he was an ITU athlete asking if he could coach him to transition into IRONMAN with the ambitious goal to win the IRONMAN World Championships. Dan also talks to us about what’s ahead here for Jan and Anne as they prepare for Challenge Roth 2020! For a little insight on his roles in coaching; aside from coaching two world champions, he is also the Head of innovation for the Pro German Cycling team Bora Hansgrohe and coach of Sarah True and a former coach of the German Triathlon Federation so he comes to us with many years of wisdom and a never-ending list of accolades and leaves us with some excellent tips for age groupers looking to train for long distance triathlons. This was an awesome podcast and I hope you leave with some insight on how the best in the world train, think, and prepare for races like Challenge Roth and KONA.
