Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:      Melissa: I am 43, 160lbs 5ft. 6 good amount of muscle. I eat completely clean as in grassfed fed, organic turkey, organic chicken occasionally brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, asparagus and arugula, pickles, saurkraut and kimchi and I only drink water. I do eat a good amount of protein 140ish grams a day. I just got bloodworm and my A1C was 5.6. All other markers were great just that one was high for me not dr. ...why when I don't eat sugar of any sorts! Just recently as in last few weeks started introducing some fruit back in such as apples, blueberries and strawberries but still so confused can you explain?                                                                                                                                                                                               Kelly: Hi Dr. Cabral, I just completed a 7 day detox, love it. Today I started the Heavy Metal detox. Really excited about detoxing my body from toxic metals. I have high Aluminum and mercury and mineral ratios are off. Anyway, Thank you for your protocols. I'm in menopause and suffering from a couple of symptoms. No libido, no sleep, irritable, brain fog, dryness, I'm not the person i used to be in terms of happiness. I used to be happy for no reason, but since menopause I changed. I'm 51. Do you offer help for those symptoms? I want to be a lovely wife as i used to be. At this point I'm even considering taking Bio Identical hormones. Thank you in advance.                                                                                                    Drew: For almost 2 years I have had a pain behind my right eye. It started as a flare up after cutting grass one day. Most of the pain comes in the morning right before I get out of bed. It is a dull ache and sometimes leaves my eye crusty. I have seen two different eye doctors, my PCP, an ear nose and throat doctor, and a neuro ophthalmologist all of which can find nothing wrong. I have had a CT scan as well as an MRI which revealed nothing. Hoping you could shed some light on next steps that I need to take or where I need to look. Thank you so much for all that you do.     AA: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am hoping that you might have some insight. In Oct. I got extremely sick ( maybe covid) with horrible respiratory issues high fever etc. every month since my period has been 3 weeks late and as of one month I cannot eat without pain. The worst symptom is no sleep because of abdominal cramping and severe full body chills ( tingling) the tingling happens all day but is more apparent after ingesting food. I have taken stool tests/blood tests which seemed normal except for low b12 (300/ml) and went for a colonoscopy ( which resulted in the doc. saying I had some inflammation at the bottom end of my colon and it could be ulcerative colitis but didn't say with certainty. ) I am at a loss its been three weeks without caffeine, sugar, wheat, dairy and the symptoms persist.                                                                 Kay: Hello Dr. Cabral- I really appreciate your very informative podcasts! I am taking pregnenolone capsules at night recommended by my physician to help make some of the hormones that decline with age, and also to enhance cognitive function.. I have 2 questions: 1) Should I discontinue this prior to taking my at-home Equilife Stress, Mood and Metabolism test, and if so, by how many days? 2) Is taking this supplement going to make my body "lazy" and produce less of my natural pregnenolone? I've noticed that this helps me sleep better at night- I take this and a very low dose of naltrexone compounded by a compounding pharmacy. I am hoping that the SM&M test will give me clues to rebalancing my hormones naturally so I do not always need to rely on exogenous (and expensive) compounds. If you have poor circulation in the legs and feet, you might experience the following: edema, swelling, painful feet, and cramps in the feet and calves. According to Dr. Stephen Hussey, author of "Understanding the Heart," the heart spins the blood, acting as a mechanism to create structured water. Similar to the way a tree pushes water up from the roots, increasing structured water throughout the circulatory system can improve circulation. You can increase structured water in your blood with infrared. Over 50% of the sun's energy is infrared! Increasing sun exposure can help improve the circulation in your legs and your heart function. Infrared increases nitric oxide, which supports the arteries and healthy blood pressure. Vitamin D from the sun also increases nitric oxide. If you have edema in the feet, potassium is one of the best natural diuretics for getting rid of excess fluid. Eliminating sugar and starches from your diet can also stop fluid retention, especially in the lower extremities. High sugar consumption depletes vitamin B1. If you're experiencing tingling and pain in the bottom of your feet, consuming benfotiamine—a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1—may help. Cramping in your legs and feet can also be related to a magnesium deficiency. For the best results, take 800 mg per day in the evening for several weeks. It's also important to avoid compression socks, which can further restrict blood circulation.Diosmin is an excellent remedy for varicose veins. If you have varicose veins, edema, or any other problems with the lower part of your body, avoid intense exercise. Instead, aim for light exercise like walking and try these simple leg circulation exercises! What about cold feet? Cold feet are generally caused by an iodine deficiency due to a low thyroid. Sea kelp is one of the best sources of iodine. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting. Pique We've done quite a few podcast episodes on the performance benefits of caffeine. But, if you're like many runners I know, pre-run coffee often leaves you with jitters or stomach issues. That's why I was so excited when I found Nandaka by Pique—the ultimate coffee alternative designed to power your runs, your training, and your recovery. So, what makes Nandaka different? Most so-called “coffee alternatives” don't actually provide functional energy. But Nandaka is built for endurance  Unlike coffee, which spikes your energy and leaves you crashing mid-run, Nandaka fuels you with steady, sustained endurance—no spikes, no crashes, just clean energy that lasts.  Nandaka provides its caffeine from fermented probiotic teas, which provide a slow-release caffeine that prevents jitters and gives you sustained release for those long runs workouts.  It also contains cordyceps mushrooms, which help boost VO2 max, delivering more oxygen to your muscles for better endurance  Plus, the probiotic teas mean no digestive distress like you often get with coffee.  If you're tired of running on fumes—or worse, running on coffee crashes—it's time to make the switch.  Right now, Pique is offering 20% off for life AND a free Starter Kit with your first purchase.  Go to Piquelife.com/run and start running on real energy today.  Your legs, your lungs, and your PRs will thank you

Gitanjali Goel joins Mary to talk about SIBO small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.  It is something that a lot of people experience at some time in their life.  The symptoms are varied but include constipation or diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, and flatus. For some, the symptoms are very distressing and really affect everyday life.  For others the symptoms can be manageable for many years and then something triggers a worsening of symptoms and suddenly, it is affecting many aspects of their day. Gitanjali explains how homeopathy helps rebalance the body even if the original cause of the health disturbance happened many years previously. Both acute and more long term remedies can really help your body get back in check. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) can cause a variety of symptoms, including: Abdominal bloating – A feeling of fullness or swelling in the stomach area. Excessive gas – Frequent flatulence or belching. Diarrhea – Loose or watery stools. Constipation – Difficulty in passing stools, sometimes alternating with diarrhea. Abdominal pain or discomfort – Cramping or general discomfort in the abdomen. Nausea – Feeling of wanting to vomit. Fatigue – Unexplained tiredness or lack of energy. Unintentional weight loss – Losing weight without trying, due to malabsorption of nutrients. Nutritional deficiencies – Symptoms related to deficiencies, such as iron or vitamin B12 deficiency, due to malabsorption. Bad breath (halitosis) – Caused by fermentation of food by bacteria. Food intolerances – Difficulty digesting certain foods, especially those high in fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs). Brain fog – Difficulty concentrating or feeling mentally sluggish. Skin issues – Such as acne, rosacea, or other inflammatory skin conditions. Symptoms mimicking IBS – Many SIBO symptoms overlap with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The remedy Gitanjali mentioned was poly bowel nosode which is the homeopathic version of a mix of pro and pre-biotics. Steve's insider secrets to a 64 minute PB at Sunshine Coast 70.3

Triathlon Nutrition Academy

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2025 45:14

Today, I’m thrilled to share a conversation with an incredible athlete, and member of the Triathlon Nutrition Academy, Steve Duquette. We’re going to discuss his performance at last year’s Sunshine Coast 70.3, where he smashed his PB by more than an hour. Listen in while he shares the strategies that helped him achieve this incredible result! You might think a result like that comes from an easy race, but think again. Steve faced multiple unexpected challenges on race day, like waves that felt like a washing machine or blinding sun that knocked him off course. But thanks to his preparation, his training, and (of course) his nutrition, Steve persevered! And, of course, the role of the community cannot be overstated. As part of our Supercharged Squad, Steve not only had access to what I teach but also the collective ideas and wisdom of the group. Recovery Nutrition was where it all started to click for Steve. It was something he had neglected, but once he started to prioritse it he saw a massive difference in his recovery and ability to train consistently. It’s the point I’d recommend everyone start with if they’re looking to boost performance. Make sure you’re planning your recovery meals with the right quantities and proportions to prepare for your next training session effectively. It's about building resilience over time. Another game-changer for Steve was learning to craft effective pre-race nutrition and carbohydrate-loading plans. I provided Steve and all Academy members with the toolsand information they need to craft detailed race nutrition plans. Having a solid plan allowed him to confidently navigate the race day, focusing on execution rather than chance Cramping had been a persistent issue for Steve, driven by misguided advice to rely on supplements like magnesium. Through our programme, Steve learned the root cause and addressed it with proper hydration and nutrition, bidding farewell to cramping once and for all. An essential takeaway is to seek advice from qualified sources and personalise solutions to your unique physiology, avoiding generic recommendations. Steve's confidence skyrocketed after the Sunshine Coast race. Not only did he achieve a massive PB, but he also enjoyed the experience, free from cramping and discomfort. He’s not content to rest on this result though, he’s coming back to Australia for this years Sunshine Coast 70.3, with plans to finish even faster! They explore how unstructured training can benefit athletes, the importance of race-like efforts, and the physiological aspects of cramping during long races. Additionally, they delve into the benefits of creatine supplementation for short, intense racing disciplines and its impact on performance.   Takeaways Peaking is not just for one day; it's a phase. Maintaining volume after peaking can enhance performance. Unstructured training can help athletes feel fresher and more confident. Cramping often results from fatigue rather than hydration issues. Incorporating race-like efforts in training is crucial for endurance athletes. Creatine can be beneficial for short, intense racing disciplines. Weight gain from creatine is often just water retention. Race experiences help athletes adapt to unknown challenges. Durability workouts can improve performance in long races. Fueling becomes more important during extended efforts.   Titles Mastering Peaking Methods for Endurance Athletes The Power of Creatine: Boosting Race Performance   Sound Bites "I feel way fitter and more confident now." They provide advice on how to balance effort in larger groups during races, particularly in relation to the Unbound Gravel race. They also discuss strategies for reducing electrolyte loss and cramping during longer races and rides. In this conversation, Kaitlyn and PRJT discuss the importance of electrolyte intake for athletes, particularly endurance athletes. They emphasize the need for proper hydration and the role of sodium in preventing cramps. They also discuss the importance of testing different drink mixes and training the gut to handle higher carbohydrate intake. The conversation provides practical tips for athletes to optimize their performance and avoid GI distress.   Keywords endurance racing, Unbound Gravel, group riding, effort, electrolyte loss, cramping, electrolytes, hydration, sodium, cramps, drink mixes, carbohydrate intake, GI distress   Takeaways Balancing effort in larger groups during races can be challenging, but it's important to consider your goals and the distance of the race. For longer races, it's recommended to start conservatively and gradually increase effort as the race progresses. Cramping during endurance events can have multiple causes, including electrolyte loss and muscle fatigue. Getting tested for sodium levels and adjusting electrolyte intake accordingly can help prevent cramping. Preloading with electrolyte supplements before a race can also be beneficial. Proper hydration and electrolyte intake are crucial for athletes, especially endurance athletes. Sodium plays a key role in preventing cramps, and athletes should not be afraid to consume salt. Testing different drink mixes and finding the one that causes the least GI distress is important. Training the gut to handle higher carbohydrate intake can help improve performance.   Titles Balancing Effort in Larger Groups During Races The Importance of Goal Setting in Endurance Racing Sodium: The Key to Preventing Cramps Training the Gut for Higher Carbohydrate Intake   Sound Bites "Balancing effort in larger groups going fast, but feeling like I wasn't working hard enough." "The longer the race, the more cautious you have to be." "If you're gonna go to a group at the end, you gotta be confident in your sprint." "Just salt your food too. Pays better." "Salt is bad for you, but as an athlete, if you're a high sodium sweater, then I don't exactly think I need to cut it out of my diet that much." This episode is focused on the fuel that drives endurance athletes. It's a world where what you eat isn't just about satisfying hunger; it's about strategy, precision, and sometimes, survival. Joining us from Australia are two experts of sports dietetics, Steph Gaskell and Alan Mccubbin, co-hosts of "The Fueling Endurance" podcast. Steph, a trail runner herself, is an expert of exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome. She's on a mission to unravel the mysteries of how our guts betray us during a run and how to keep the digestive peace. Then there's Alan, a man who can talk about sodium and hydration. With a background in mountain biking and sailing, he knows the fine line between staying hydrated and hitting a wall. Takeaways Dehydration can increase the risk of gut symptoms and impact digestion, absorption, and the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. Vomiting may provide temporary relief from gastrointestinal stress, but it does not eliminate the underlying issue. Cramping can be caused by a combination of factors, including hydration, electrolyte balance, neuromuscular responses, muscle fatigue, and psychological stress. Sweat rate and electrolyte loss are not always correlated, and individual variations exist in sweat sodium concentration. Find out more about Steph and Alan at Fueling Endurance and check out their book!

The Cause of Lower Abdominal Cramping Pain

Today we're going to talk about the best and worst foods for lower abdominal pain. There are many different causes of lower abdominal cramping or pain. But, in my opinion, we can usually trace the problem back to the person's diet and malabsorption. If a person has a problem with malabsorption, they may also experience bloating, diarrhea, or loose stool. The more inflammation or gut problems you have, the more sensitive you're going to be to certain things like gluten, lactose, fruit, grains, legumes, beans, nuts, and seeds. A good thing to consume would be a stew with homemade bone broth. The collagen in the stew is great for inflammation in the gut. Adding vegetables to the stew is also fantastic because they will cook down to the point where they shouldn't bother your digestive system. High-quality saturated animal fats are important to help support the gut. This means the meat you add to your stew should have skin on it and should be fatty. Lactose-free whole-milk kefir or lactose-free goat milk kefir is also great to help support healthy digestion. To support the colon, you may want to consume probiotic foods. Ghee and fermented vegetables may also be beneficial. The best vegetable for digestive issues is cabbage. This may be because it contains sulforaphane or certain phytonutrients. Even people who have digestive problems like gastritis or irritable bowel syndrome may find it easier to consume cabbage.

Today, I want to share the best natural alternative for Viagra. In many cases, people with erectile dysfunction have normal hormone levels. But, they also typically have high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, or are smokers. Erectile dysfunction is one of the earliest signs of peripheral artery disease. Other symptoms of peripheral artery disease can include: • Cold feet • Painful legs • Cramping in the lower legs • Color changes in the lower legs • Slow healing • Loss of hair on the lower legs It's crucial to fix the root cause of erectile dysfunction by healing the endothelial layer. Getting on the keto diet is one of the best things you can do to start addressing this issue. In the meantime, several natural remedies for erectile dysfunction can be combined into one simple drink. Ingredients: • 1 cup of juice from watermelon rinds • The juice of one medium beet (or two tsp. beet powder with eight oz. of water) • 1 cup celery juice Optional ingredient: • Dark, leafy green vegetables Blend the above ingredients and drink one glass of this remedy every morning for four to six weeks. Nose breathing and exercise may also be beneficial to help with erectile dysfunction. It's also important to note that viewing porn may lead to porn-induced erectile dysfunction.
