We often talk about having a spiritual awakening, but what is it really? More than a decade ago, at a silent retreat, Lisa Carillo stopped having the thoughts of a separate identity and saw that we are already and always the One Infinite Benevolence. When the thoughts came back a few weeks later, they weren't as convincing. She developed tools for unraveling these thoughts and the conditioning of fear, using our daily lives as the perfect Divine workshop. This was a fun podcast, marking my own journey of transformation. We recorded it just before I embarked on a life-changing trip of my own, and had fear and anxiety come up — I was supposed to leave early next morning. Softening through the ego's fear of change, we allowed more of the Infinite to come through. We also talk about Lisa's books: "An Unprincipled Life: Living From the Unknown" and "Living Awake: 20 Techniques to End 'I Got It; I Lost It.'" Her website is www.experiencingthetrueself.com

For as long as I can remember I passionately wanted to know how life worked. I used to think that others had access to a grand rulebook and that I was missing out. When I began to develop my inner relationship with Source, I discovered how to be an inner researcher. Inner research requires a courageous heart. One that is willing to explore the unknown, no matter what. Because that's where true freedom lies… The light of our inner wisdom can bring such clarity of direction! As my guest today writes: An unprincipled life gives concepts a backseat and gives direct experience a front seat. Concepts are always abstract rather than real—they use words, which are symbols that merely point to reality. Direct experience is based in reality. What we are is reality. Stay tuned. As a child, Lisa remembered a place of love and light and experienced moments of profound love. But, having chosen an adventure of going from constriction to freedom, she complied with fundamentalism for many years. She worked as a chemical engineer and then medical device product manager. But her heart called her out of the corporate world. In 2009 she experienced how we are not our personas but Infinite Being having physical experiences. Now she coaches people and leads meditation groups. She is the author of two books, 'An Unprincipled Life: Living from the Unknown' and 'Living Awake: 20 Techniques to End "I Got It; I Lost It." Our guest in episode#162 is Lisa Carillo; she guides and coaches people to experience the Infinite, even in challenging circumstances. She is the author of several books including An “Unprincipled Life: Living From the Unknown” and “Living Awake: 20 Techniques to End I Got It; I Lost It.” Today we're going to talk about her memories in between lives, the perfection of her difficult lives, and the mastery of her life. What we observed:Many past life memories were triggered by the death of her best friendAn off-planet memory of being” a ball of light”Compared to the reality of the other side, this “life” is like a movie. Memories of planning lives in the “in between” stateOne of the things we get to experience here is the fun of mastering fear, and other things we can't experience on the other sideWhy certain things don't manifestHow she describes memories of death as “wonderful”For More Info: https://www.experiencingthetrueself.com/Support the showMusic by Black Box Traders

Mom of five, writer, speaker, spiritual director, Anjuli Pasquall, knew how it felt to always be running after a more-and a later-on and someday-I'll-catch-up kind of life and she knew it wasn't how God wanted life to be— for her, for anyone. She began a quest to find out what it meant to live fully awake—to God's presence, to love, to connection. And she wrote a gem of a book about it. Today I get to share my beautiful conversation with Anjuli Paschal. Anjuli is an author who exquisitely and intentionally shares in her books and online about her journey of coming undone and being put back together by God's love. She serves alongside her pastor husband, she's a mother of five children whose ages range from 4-15, and today we talk about things like wrestling with reentry emotionally into society, being a woman and a mother with really big feelings and aftershocks of what we've been all through, trauma as a whole, and also helping our children navigate those things as well. One of my favorite things she shares in her newest book Awake: Paying Attention to What Matters Most in a World That's Pulling You Apart is unpacking the differences between being transparent and being vulnerable. Anjuli shares that “Vulnerability is being seen from the inside out, exposing who we truly are.” We talk about how hard that can be, and what kind of risk it can feel like to truly be ourselves for better or worse with others, but Anjuli argues that “It's a greater risk to not be vulnerable.” We unpack that a little bit and it's just a really refreshing and powerful conversation on transformation, how trustworthy God truly is and His call for us to be awake to who He is, and who He made us to be. God is always providing us opportunities to be honest, come as we are and connect more intimately with Him and more deeply with those we live life with. What a scary concept, but with the potential for such rich fruit. I hope this conversation helps you to feel less alone knowing that none of us have this figured out, and we are always being transformed and becoming more awake to the abundant life Christ gives us. Listen, friend, wherever you are today, remember that you matter, and your story matters. Thanks for hanging out with me and I'll see you next time. Just a little intro about what to expect...
“Until you make the subconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate.”Carl jung Most people are living asleep. They are running their show based on learned ideas, cultural norms and past experiences – rarely questioning their own thoughts and beliefs. They do not understand that their beliefs are creating their realities, and the power they have to change their realities, simply by changing their thoughts. When I was in college, I fell madly in love with the transcendentalists, especially Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, who were inspired by, and anchored in self-reliance. They were opposed to collective consciousness, which is a set of common, shared beliefs, ideas and moral attitudes that operate as a unifying force within a society, much like a virus. This un-enlightened force typically results in consumerism, prejudice and fear – propagated by mass media. We all operate to some degree within this collective consciousness. It is how we relate to one another. However, for many people this is their only road map for navigating life, which leads to a life created unconsciously or by default – leaving them feeling completely dis-empowered and at the mercy of external forces – ignorant to their inherent, amazing powers of manifestation, self-healing and creation. My work is greatly inspired by transcendentalism, which is “spirituality internalized” – recognizing that we are all one of the same stuff – call it stardust, Divine Intelligence, God. It goes by many names – and that we are capable of being, doing and having more than we can fathom. Once we become aware of our magnificence, we can then become the great artists and architects of our lives – consciously evolving and creating as we go, knowing that we are free to express as we wish. And here are seven signs that YOU are living awake… 1. You study. You question everything. Your curious mind seeks truth and justice. You detest being spoon-fed information and are skeptical about most things until you can validate them yourself. You read and listen to the great mystics, poets, philosophers and teachers who speak of timeless wisdom. When you hear the truth, you know it. When you hear fear and propaganda, you know it – and avoid it. You are mindful about feeding your psyche with things that nourish it. Albert Einstein reminds us, “The important thing is not to stop questioning.” You are resourceful and research best practices for yourself – including diet, exercise and healthcare – you're not interested in following the hot trend, unless it speaks to your soul. 2. You practice meditation. You treat your mind with reverence and give it adequate rest by meditating. You understand the nature of the monkey mind and take initiative to calm and re-direct your mind at will. You seek and provide peaceful environments for yourself, so you can hear your high-self and holy guidance, which you know, is always available to you. You've learned to turn everyday activities into moments of meditation and can access that place readily – like when you fold laundry, drive or take a walk. 3. You are patient. You've learned to trust your inner wisdom and give it time to formulate the words and guidance necessary for right action to take place. You no longer waste your precious energy trying to control circumstances or make things happen. You let go of society's “shoulds” and run your own race – knowing and trusting that your evolution is right on time. You appreciate divine timing and acknowledge the universal law of gestation. Your inner mantra is, "wait for it..." knowing full well it is on its way. 4. You have amazing powers of observation. Instead of going down the rabbit hole with the hysteria of mass media, you have become an astute observer of it, realizing that the story you are witnessing is only a portion of it, or simply an opinion. You watch, wait and formulate your own ideas and opinions based ...

None of us live as isolated individuals. All of us come into contact with others, and our actions have consequences. Some of them are eternal. Christians are to make disciples of all nations, including their own backyards. Thankfully, we are not called to do it alone, but to encourage and spur one another along in love.
It is entirely possible to live life totally unaware of the things that really matter. There are spiritual realities towards which many have never been awoken, or have simply fallen asleep. God exhorts us to, but also give us the tools and the stamina to stay awake; chiefly through prayer.
Not only is the Enneagram a great tool for gaining self-knowledge, but it is also a gateway for building strong relationships. When you understand that your way of seeing the world is not the only way to see the world, it creates room for compassion and appreciation toward others. The Enneagram teaches us how to communicate, and in turn, strengthens our relationships with family, friends, and co-workers. This week I invited husband and wife, David Dark (Enneagram 9) and Sarah Masen (Enneagram 6) to join me in a conversation about how the Enneagram has helped them identify the similarities and differences in their personalities and how that knowledge has shaped their marriage. With Enneagram Nines “optimistic to the point of denial” and Enneagram Sixes “realistic to the point of oblivion,” Dark and Masen demonstrate how they try to live in a balanced way that fosters a supportive and secure relationship where they both feel valued. ABOUT DAVID: David Dark is the author of Life's Too Short To Pretend You're Not Religious, The Sacredness of Questioning Everything, Everyday Apocalypse: The Sacred Revealed in Radiohead, The Simpsons, and Other Pop Culture Icons and The Gospel According To America: A Meditation on a God-blessed, Christ-haunted Idea. His work has appeared in MTV News, Books & Culture, Pitchfork, and the Oxford American. Following years of teaching high school English, he received his doctorate in 2011 and now teaches at the Tennessee Prison for Women and Belmont University where he is assistant professor of Religion and the Arts in the College of Theology. ABOUT SARAH: Sarah Masen is an American singer-songwriter originally from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. For several years she has lived in Nashville, TN with her husband, author David Dark, and their three children. Originally signed to Charlie Peacock’s “re:think” label, and subsequently to Word Records, she is now independent. Sarah's music has been described as pop alternative and is written from a background featuring influences as varied as Rich Mullins, Keith Green, 10,000 Maniacs, Over The Rhine, Victoria Williams and Julie Miller. Sarah's live performance has elements of the innocent approach of the last two artists, although most of her music comes from more of an intellectual background, discussing life, relationships and faith, in stark contrast with the angst-driven, dark and cynical approach you can find in a lot of the alternative music today.
Often times I say “Bring meditation to life” and this story illustrates just how that looks like in life. Meditation is the foundation, one side of a triangle, with the other to sides being “insight” and “action”.
