Matthew 25:1-13 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.' 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. 1 Peter 4:7-11 7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Introduction: The Question That Remains "How then shall we live?" Live Watchfully (Matthew 25:1–13) Live Intentionally (1 Peter 4:7) Love Deeply (1 Peter 4:8–9) Serve Faithfully (1 Peter 4:10–11) Conclusion: Living in Light of His Return
For the very first episode of HOW TO LIVE, I sat down with my old school friend MICHAEL ZHANG. We talked about spending $30,000 in 10 days, travel adventures, lessons from school, Michael's grandmother who shaped him to be the person he is today, and selling illegal DVDs!

The Eyres begin this episode by reflecting on their history with Hawaii and the role the islands have played in their family life. Then they turn to the month's theme of How To Live the Second Half of Life Spiritually and focus on their grandson's accident that occurred this week and what it taught them about prayer and spiritual answers. For more detail see Instagram @HTLsecondhalf.
Due to Halloween, grandkids, and travel, the Eyres didn't record this week and asked us to pick a favorite re-run...which we did. Richard and Linda will be back live next week with the latest in their How To Live series. "Casting from Las Vegas today, the Eyres finish a discussion they started last episode about the 3-letter lesson ALM referring to the acts of mercy and compassion that Jesus called alms. An act of service or lifting is called an "almdeed" in the New Testament. They then juxtaposition that word with the 3-letter lesson WIN which is a blessing when we make it a win-win, and a curse when we make it a win-lose."

The fun thing about time management is that you get to *choose* the philosophy and approach that works for you, but a lot of productivity advice is presented as "right vs wrong". In this video, I share a buffet of 20 time management tips for you to choose from - that completely contradict each other (because that is the nature of productivity advice). - John A. Watch this episode on YouTube! Derek has accomplished numerous impressive feats. He founded CD Baby. In 2008, he sold CD Baby for $22 million and donated the proceeds to a charitable trust dedicated to music education. After selling the company, he transitioned into writing and speaking. Derek's books are short, dense, and profound. In honor of his style, I've broken up my interview with him into three fascinating segments. It would be great if you could buy Derek's new book, Useful Not True, from Amazon, as I receive a small commission. However, if you want a much better deal, do what I did: buy multiple copies of his book from Derek Sivers's website. It's significantly cheaper than Amazon, especially when purchasing multiple copies, as each additional hardcover copy costs only about $4 more. How Derek Sivers and I met Derek Sivers stumbled onto The Hidden Europe, fell in love with it, and reached out to me 10 years ago, telling me how much he loved my book. I had no idea who he was, but soon found out. A-list celebrities, such as Tim Ferriss, have interviewed Derek on multiple occasions. Still, I'm not one to fall for celebrities, unless she's Megan Fox. What makes me most thrilled about interviewing Derek is his philosophy: he's a stoic. This guy sold his company (CD Baby) for $22 million and gave the money away to charity. He loves to experiment, travel, and think out of the box. It pains me that he and I missed each other when I visited his city in Wellington, New Zealand. I was there for a day, and it happened to be the day that he devotes entirely and exclusively to his son. I wish he were a less responsible father. About Derek Sivers Derek Sivers is focused on creation, learning, and living a minimalist, highly intentional life. Background: Born in 1969 in Berkeley, he moved frequently during his childhood, including to U.S. cities and England. His early focus on music began at the age of 14, when he was trained at Berklee College of Music. He transitioned into entrepreneurship. Career: Started multiple companies, including CD Baby and HostBaby, sold them in 2008, and since then has focused on writing, traveling, and intrinsic creativity rather than money or fame. Life Philosophy: Influenced by Stoicism, skeptical and open to changing perspectives, values self-strengthening for the future, and embraces the paradox that opposite views can both be true. Work Style: Loves to work alone intensely for long hours (12+ hours daily), prefers solo creative pursuits, and values deep focus and minimalist distraction. Uses minimal tech tools, avoids apps and cloud dependence, and prefers phone conversations to in-person socializing. Personal: American by origin, a world citizen, and expat living in various countries for extended periods. Has a 12-year-old son with whom he spends significant undivided time weekly. Identifies as an introverted extrovert with a strong social time limit, values voice communication, and dislikes noise and crowds. Values & Traits: Minimalist in possessions and technology, single-task oriented, future-focused, deliberate, avoids addictions, hates wasting time, and values silence and quality over quantity in relationships and experiences. Creative Interests: Loves and creates music with a focus on innovation, song craft, and high-quality recordings. Prefers analytical listening and creative originality rather than mainstream trends. Overall, Derek leads a carefully optimized life that prioritizes creativity, learning, and meaningful personal connections, with a strong emphasis on independence, long-term thinking, and simplicity. Drawing on decades of expertise, Mike shares practical insights into when — and when not — to use these innovative solutions to meet today's complex challenges. Understanding the Corrosion Control Toolbox Mike Standish opens the conversation by reframing corrosion control strategies through the lens of a toolbox analogy. With limited primary approaches — from phosphate-based to organic and metal-based chemistries — the success of corrosion management depends on matching the right tool to the right application. Mike stresses the importance of avoiding overcomplication and focusing on the fundamental chemical pathways for mild steel protection. Organic vs. Inorganic Approaches The discussion turns to the critical differences between organic and inorganic inhibitors. While inorganic phosphates remain cost-effective mainstays, organic phosphonates, including maleic acid-derived materials, offer advantages in high pH, high hardness, and oxidizing environments. Mike emphasizes that “organic” in water treatment bears no relation to natural or sustainable products, a frequent misconception among newcomers to the industry. Why Maleic Acid-Based Inhibitors Matter Maleic acid phosphonates distinguish themselves with exceptional oxidant stability, a feature increasingly necessary as continuous halogenation becomes standard practice. Mike explains the chemistry behind maleic acid derivatives and how the ability to tailor molecular structures creates flexibility for specific field conditions — such as scaling tendencies, pH control, and calcium carbonate formation risks. Best Practices for Application and Measurement Field success with maleic acid-based inhibitors hinges on proper dosage and testing. Mike shares lessons from real-world trials, emphasizing that underfeeding is a common mistake that compromises corrosion rates. Accurate differentiation between orthophosphate and phosphonate concentrations is vital for precise monitoring, and bench testing must closely simulate real-world surface-to-volume ratios to yield reliable predictions. The Future of Corrosion Control In a forward-looking discussion, Mike predicts that industry consolidation will trigger a second wave of entrepreneurial water treatment companies. His vision underscores the ongoing need for technical excellence, adaptability, and innovation in corrosion management practices as the industry evolves. This episode challenges water treatment professionals to rethink their corrosion strategies with a sharper, more informed approach. Maleic acid-based inhibitors are not a universal solution, but when applied thoughtfully, they offer powerful advantages for specific operational demands. Explore more episodes, challenge your assumptions, and lead the way in advancing our industry's standards of technical excellence. Don't forget to subscribe to Scaling UP! What if true happiness isn't found in material wealth but in something far more profound? In this thought-provoking episode, I spoke with Jeff Golden, author of Reclaiming the Sacred, to explore his decade-long journey of gathering wisdom from psychologists, activists, saints, and poets. Jeff shares how his diverse life roles have shaped his understanding of joy, presence, and interconnectedness. Together, we examine why happiness has declined in industrialized nations despite increasing prosperity, highlighting the vital roles of relationships, health, and self-acceptance. The discussion weaves through spiritual traditions, from Christianity to Taoism and Buddhism, offering insights on how reconnecting with nature and our inner selves can lead to deeper fulfillment. A rich and inspiring conversation that challenges societal norms and invites us to redefine what it means to truly thrive.Links Discussed in This Episode |Book: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara KingsolverBook: Sensing God: Experiencing the Divine in Nature, Food, Music, and BeautyDr. Kristin Neff - Self CompassionConnect with Jeff:Book: Reclaiming the Sacred: Healing Our Relationships with Ourselves and the WorldWebsiteJeff's Course: Reclaiming the Sacred - An Experiential 6 Week Online CourseAbout Jeff |Jeff Golden, M.Ed., was most recently a scholar-in-residence at Vassar College. This is the fifith in a series of episodes on How To Live in 2025, focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and actions we need to thrive, develop, create, and resist. In other words, tools that don't merely deaden us in the frantic pursuit of survival, but that assist us in nourishing ourselves, each other, and the world, all together. The theme isPEACEKEEPand my guest isCHEYNEY RYAN.Cheyney works withThe Oxford Consortium for Human Rights. While the lexicon of war is extensive, the act of creating true peace in the world doesn't exist in an active word. That is in part because thewar system - as Cheyney calls the autonomous, seemingly inexorable network of war activities, sites, motivations, and contracts - has instead on the articulation of its own anatomy. It's entranced us into detailing its every contour so that we become more and more convinced of its reality and density.

"The bigger the roles that I got, the more I ended up drawing on what I had learned in improv and standup. Why was no one talking about how valuable humor is as a skill? So I realized maybe I should.” Drew Tarvin is the world's first and only Humor Engineer (not just this podcast's co-host). On a How To Live podcast conversation with co-host Sharad Lal, Drew shares not just his career journey - but practical skills on how humour can amplify leadership and why it's more than just a tool for entertainment. Drew studied engineering at THE Ohio State University, and was hired to P&G for his technical skills where he worked on global roles in his hometowns of Cincinnati and New York City. Yet, it was humour—not engineering—that became his edge in the workplace. By using humour, he diffused tension, built strong relationships, influenced others, and accelerated his career — in fact, he became P&G's first ever - self proclaimed - corporate humorist. Ultimately this led Drew to make the entrepreneurial leap — founding Humor That Works, a company that has helped 10,000+ leaders in over 100 organisations—including IBM, GE, the FBI, AND P&G —harness humour to lead effectively. His TEDx talk on the skill of humor has been viewed 15MM+ times. You can learn more about Drew's work @ drewtarvin.com.
