We caught up with unique indie artist Robert Deeble to talk about his new release “The Space Between Us” coming out February 6th. Roberts story driven lyrics and production have a classic vibe with a modern twist. Robert Deeble's spirit-infused lyrics are paired with a subtle, minimalist style that echoes old folk heroes like Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake. His first album, released with his band, Days Like These, was a critical success and featured a duet with Victoria Williams, "Rock A Bye." Days Like These never performed outside of the L.A. area and disbanded soon after their first release. His second album, a solo effort entitled Earthside Down, was released in 1998 and featured the production work of Anthony Arvizu and Stephen Hodges (best known for his drum work with Tom Waits). They helped augment Deeble's spare sound with cellos, timpani, gongs, and electronic elements, creating a sound that treads a line between folk and ambient music. ~ Stacia Proefrock, Rovi Robert's links www.hyperfollow.com/RobertDeeble www.Youtube.com/@Robert.deeble About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. We've loved Robert Deeble for a long time around here. His brand of thoughtful alternative folk fit right in with artists like Over The Rhine, Vigilantes of Love, Innocence Mission, and Victoria Williams - and his side gig as a graphic artist lent a gorgeous visual perspective to all of his releases. His output has slowed over the last couple of decades as he became a successful psychologist and built a thriving practice in Oregon. So it was very good news indeed when we heard that he was about to release a new album - produced by Ric Hordinski no less! With many of us feeling more than a little on edge these days, we thought a touch-base with our favorite songsmith-turned-therapist was long overdue. In this special @45RPM episode of the show we focus on clips of JJT's full conversation with Robert. These bits focus on his new album - the beautiful collection entitled The Space Between Us that is currently seeking support via Kickstarter for a vinyl and CD release. And if you dig this, you can head over to OUR PATREON PAGE to hear the REST OF THE STORY! Patreon now allows a "free membership" - and it would be awesome if you would take a minute to sign up (for free) and take a listen. We will be posting more special content exclusively on that page (and even more on the paid side) from now on! And don't forget to head over to Kickstarter and back Robert's awesome project! MICHAEL HERBERT talks about THE CHANGES First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 12th 2025. Way back in 1974, children's television legend ANNA HOME, as part of her commitment to producing challenging and interesting drama serials intended for older children, wrote an adaptation of a trilogy of books written by PETER DICKINSON (The Weathermonger, Hartsease, and The Devil's Children) which turned out to be one of those TV serials that somehow, with its powerful images of a country descending into chaos, managed to sear itself into the minds of a generation. Produced for the BBC, and broadcast in 1975 across ten episodes that were each just shy of half an hour in length, and mostly filmed on locations across the south west of England, THE CHANGES took the basic stories told in those three books, turned them on their heads, made one character the centre of each, and made a compelling drama that found many schoolchildren dashing home to watch the next episode, and involving themselves in fascinated conversations about it in the playground the next day. Or maybe that was just me and my mates. Who knows? Nevertheless, opening with scenes of wanton destruction of all sorts of vehicles, domestic equipment, and entertainment devices, as humanity both young and old was influenced into destroying all the mechanical objects that were taking over our lives, and destroying our planet, the series in many ways resembles other post-apocalyptic dramas as Britain swiftly reverts to a feudal society full of mistrust, fear of outsiders, and superstition. NICKI GORE, played by then nineteen-year old VICTORIA WILLIAMS, and later on, her friend JONATHON, played by KEITH ASHTON, embark on a quest to find the source of these apocalyptic CHANGES and try to restore humanity back towards its way to civilisation. On their way NIKKI is helped by members of the SIKH COMMUNITY in a very progressive take on the outsider for seventies TV, and hindered by the kind of sinister personalities that always seem to rise to the top when civilisation collapses. And whilst some of the stories may resemble a kind of SURVIVORS-LITE for the children's hour, and some of the storylines do, perhaps, stretch your credulity when watching them as an adult, much of what they have to say tells us of the types of prejudices and problems that lie just beneath the surface of 1970s Britain, many of which still feel rather familiar today. This series with its many very forward thinking images seared itself into our imaginations, and TV historian MICHAEL HERBERT - who is very much a fan of television science-fiction - returns to VISION ON SOUND today to discuss the series with me. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
When you hear the term "singer-songwriter", what the first thing that comes to mind? Sensitive '70s long-haired hippies strolling through Laurel Canyon with an acoustic guitar? Us too. But, amidst the explosion of alternative rock, grunge, Britpop, electronic music, and hip-hop, the '90s were a fruitful decade for the singer-songwriter. This crop of artists drew from a stylistically varied palette, but played music with passion, heart, honesty, vulnerability, and a knack for poetic storytelling. One of the most promising singer-songwriters of the '90s was this week's Third Lad Milo Binder, the musical alter ego of Todd Lawrence. Milo Binder's self-titled debut album was released in 1991 to universal critical acclaim, featuring a respected roster of legendary musicians including Garth Hudson from The Band, Sneaky Pete from Flying Burrito Brothers, and Victoria Williams, as well as studio pros like the late David Vaught (Rosebud, Tom Waits, Roger McGuinn) and Duane Jarvis. Milo was profiled on NPR, received folk radio airplay, and shared the stage with a range of artists from the Indigo Girls to Soundgarden. Naturally, with that auspicious debut, Milo Binder went on to a long, fruitful musical career. Right? Well, a series of life changing events caused Milo Binder to hang up the guitar and transform back into mild-mannered Todd Lawrence for the better part of 33 years (the Superman analogy isn't all that hyperbolic...you'll find out that Todd is pretty much a super hero!). Other than the occasional live appearance and 2019's wonderfully whimsical psychedelic pop fable Paisley and the Firefly written and recorded with his longtime musical partner and best friend Willie Aron, a true follow up to the Milo Binder album never materialized. Until now. August 2024 heralded the return of Milo Binder with his (verrrrrry) long awaited second album, The Unspeakable Milo Binder, on Heyday Again (distributed by Real Gone Music). It finds our hero not only in fine form, but it's a record that equals or surpasses its predecessor. Listen to Milo's remarkable story, plus: What '90s singer-songwriter was a triple crossover...but with three different albums? Where did Uncle Gregg bomb doing stand up? Who was Milo's toughest audience? What group of people did Cher offend? (According to our official staff fact checker, aka Brett's wife, it's NOT who we said it was.) In the opening episode of the Future in the Humanities podcast mini-series, titled "Touching Brains", Wits University research collaborators Sahba Besharati and Victoria Williams let us in on their multidisciplinary exploration of the complex impact of COVID-19 on human interaction and touch. Featuring insights from various studies and discussions around the experiences of parents and caregivers during the pandemic, Andile Masuku (host), examines the significance of physical contact, the resilience of human beings and the potential long-term effects of altered social interactions. Key themes: - Perception of touch across societies: We pose the question: Is touch perceived differently across cultures? This episode examines how various societies interpret and engage in physical contact, influenced by factors like cultural norms and societal structures. - COVID-19 and proximity: We discuss how the pandemic has reshaped perceptions of proximity and touch, as health protocols and safety measures have altered traditional practices and interactions. - Humanities and neurosciences connection: The episode connects the humanities and neurosciences, demonstrating that a greater understanding of localized experiences can enhance rather than challenge universal principles. Most of the world is not 'WEIRD' (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic), yet much research in fields like psychology and neuroscience has historically been conducted in WEIRD contexts. This raises questions about the applicability of such research to diverse populations. - Resilience of families: Despite the challenges, we explore the resilience of families in fostering connections during the pandemic and how lockdowns may have strengthened bonds. - Long-term implications of touch: We address the significance of touch in maintaining social relationships and contemplate the potential long-term effects of social deprivation on mental health and development. As we continue our ode to the 30 years of the Vs. tour this November, we're stopping at a show that's known for both what happened during the concert, and then what happened in the aftermath. The show is an unforgettable night from this tour highlighted by a very early rendition of Crazy Mary in which original songwriter, Victoria Williams, joins them to play guitar and sing, and long-time Pearl Jam producer, Brendan O'Brien, is called upon to play the B3. It's a moment that's etched in history, but perhaps gets overshadowed by the events that took place the following night. After a dispute with a fan in a New Orleans bar, Eddie Vedder was arrested for public drunkenness and disturbing the peace after spitting in the man's face. We'll take the early portion of the episode to discuss about the incident as we'll invite the 1993 American League Cy Young award winner, Jack McDowell, onto the show, who was there during the occurrence. We'll talk to Jack about his relationship with Eddie and how they met through their ex-wives, how Pearl Jam got his band V.I.E.W. bumped off a gig at CBGB's, how he and Ed convinced TV reporters that Ed was a White Sox call-up, and of course the New Orleans situation. Get to hear what he thought of the whole ordeal and how his night ended up after getting into it with the friend of the agitator that Ed had to deal with. There was only so much time that we had to share of his interview in this episode, but check out Patreon this week for the director's cut of the interview featuring stories about his band's V.I.E.W. and stickfigure, Pearl Jam's relationship with baseball and his current frustrations with baseball analytics that he likes to write songs about. As for the show, there are excellent performances that we'll get to dig into from Why Go, Footsteps, Porch, Rats, Blood and of course, Crazy Mary. We'll also discuss Release being an OTOTO Daughter tag and a wild sequence that featured Ed singing lyrics from Michael Jackson song "Ben" into a fierce, unrelenting rendition of Blood. Our Gear Guru segments this week will focus on some of the slide guitar features of Rats, and of course, the contrast of this version of Crazy Mary compared to what we know of it now. On this episode, Keith & Geoff welcome Marvin Etzioni into Thunderlove Studio - he is also known as the Mandolin Man. Etzioni is best known as a founder and bassist for the band Lone Justice. He is also a noted songwriter, composer, and record producer. He has released three solo albums in addition to performing with loads of artists. In 1982, Etzioni met Ryan Hedgecock, who shared his love for country and roots music. Hedgecock was already performing with Maria McKee. Hedgecock and McKee asked Etzioni to back them on bass duties, along with drummer Don Heffington and the band Lone Justice was launched. Etzioni was a member of Lone Justice from 1983 to 1986, during which he encouraged them to write original material, and contributed the songs "East of Eden," "Working Late," "You Are the Light," and "Soap, Soup and Salvation" (written with McKee). Marvin has produced for numerous artists, including Peter Case, Counting Crows, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Etzioni's compositions have been covered by Cheap Trick, Victoria Williams, Julie Miller and Judy Collins. Etzioni produced and wrote songs with the Williams Brothers (Andy Williams' nephews Andrew and David). Together with David Williams, Etzioni co-wrote "Can't Cry Hard Enough" which became his most successful song. In the 1990s, Etzioni recorded and released three albums: The Mandolin Man (1991), Bone (1992) and Weapons of the Spirit (1994).Etzioni employs the analog-vinyl-digital (AVD) technique, in which his master tapes are converted first to vinyl, and the vinyl is recorded to digital for the final product. Vincent E. Norment & Victoria Williams—the pride and joy of Englewood—return to talk Bball. Specifically. Ben's beloved Bulls. Stumbling into the all-star break with six straight losses, it looked bleak for the Bulls. Then they signed the energy man, Patrick Beverly (Marshall High , ‘06) and suddenly things are looking up. "East Of Eden" Well, most great stories start in the East and end up in the west and the story of Marvin Etizoni does exactly that. The Brooklyn born musician and his family moved to L.A. in the '70s and it didn't take long for Etzioni to fit right in. His first band Model played with everyone from the Plimsolls to the Motels, and his next band Lone Justice signed to Geffen and opened for U2. Not too shabby. Etzioni left Lone Justice after their first record and from there he got really busy. So busy in fact, it would take a full podcast to cover everything so bear with this partial list. Etzioni put out a series of awesome solo albums, produced artists like Peter Case, Toad The Wet Sprocket and Counting Crows, wrote songs for Jimmy Barnes, Victoria Williams, Voice of the Beehive, the Williams Brothers and Judy Collins, appeared on records by Dogs Eye View, the Dixie Chicks and Lily Haydn and he has a band called Thee Holy Brothers with Willie Aron of the Balancing Act. If you want to get an idea as to how respected Etzioni is in the music industry, consider this: one of his solo albums called Marvin Country, features duets with Richard Thompson, John Doe, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams. And this probably won't surprise you, but Etzioni is really busy. The President of Regional Records, he's in the studio working on Lone Justice tracks and finishing up the new Thee Holy Brothers record; additionally, he's prepping the release of the first new Williams Brothers album in almost 30 years, and Lone Justice are going to be included in an upcoming Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit alongside the Byrds, the Eagles and more. The mandolin-playing Etzioni has had quite a career, and this is quite a conversation. www.regionalrecords.com www.marvincountry.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

As part of our Desert summer special, today I have a special guest who is very close to my heart. I met Ted Quinn 11 years ago after I arrived in California from my native France. We were just starting Yard Of Blondes, our band, and we dreamed of playing in the desert. This trip was sparked by one particular place, the Rancho de la Luna. The legendary studio has been the home of numerous amazing artists including Queens of the Stone age, Kyuss, Arctic Monkey, Earthlings, Mark Lanegan, Victoria Williams, and many more. We also all remember QOTSA's Josh Homme's infamous Desert Sessions with guests such as PJ Harvey, Twiggy Ramirez, Dave Catching, Nick Oliveri, Josh Freese, Chris Goss, Alain Johannes, Les Claypool and more. That night, we had no idea we would bump into someone very close to that universe. Ted Quinn was hosting an open mic at Pappy And Harriet's, which would become one of the country's most beloved venues. He was kind enough to sign us up and we ended up having one of the most memorable nights of our lives. In addition to finding a haven for art, we also found an amazing community that revolved around Teddy Quinn. While growing up, he spent time in Hollywood and Laurel Canyon, acting in movies and TV series like Land Of The Giant, but also playing in bands like Telekin and Ministry Of Fools. It was during those formative years that Ted met Fred Drake, a Texas transplant drummer who was to establish the now iconic Rancho De La Luna. They played music together and often traveled to Joshua Tree to escape the noise of Hollywood. Fred founded the Rancho in 1993 after they decided to stay there permanently. Dave Catching, who would become the guitarist for Eagles Of Death Metal, joined him soon after. Unfortunately, Fred was HIV positive and got brain cancer. He passed away twenty years ago on June 20th, 2002. The week prior to his passing, Teddy and Fred looked through his tapes and he personally selected about 60 unreleased songs he loved. To commemorate Fred Drake's 20th passing anniversary, Teddy reached out to his family and Dave Catching (who still runs the studio) and together they decided it was time to release new music from Fred. Here we are today, discussing Teddy's journey, how he became friends with Fred, and how the Rancho was founded. The story is beautiful, at times sad, but it is an important story that must be told. With this 20 year-old album, we can see how Fred Drake touched so many lives and continues to impact the high desert even today. Proceeds from "I give you life" will go to LULAC - the nation's oldest Latino civil rights group - which has created a special fund for the victims' families and survivors. Musician Peter Case has lived a life of constant change, soaring highs, and soul-crushing lows. From the frigid suburbs of Buffalo NY, to his early years living and busking on the streets of San Francisco, to formative experiences with punk band The Nerves and leading the LA power-pop legends The Plimsouls, and now his decades-long, Grammy-nominated solo career, this film walks a million miles in the shoes of one of America's last great troubadours. brilliant, elusive, sometimes infuriating, and always fascinating Peter Case. A gifted musician who had never found the widespread acclaim they deserved, but who had still managed to find a place in the unforgiving landscape of the music business. Peter Case is a unique and compelling artist with a fascinating life story both heartbreaking and hopeful, who had spent the past four decades steadfastly answering his artistic calling. A dynamic performer, a gifted raconteur with a master storyteller's flair, a passion for social justice, and a ripping sense of humor. Peter Case: A Million Miles Away features many of Peter's friends and colleagues, including singer/songwriters; Ben Harper, Steve Earle, Victoria Williams, Jack Lee as well as producers; Van Dyke Parks, Mitchell Froom, Steven Soles, Hobart Taylor and Denise Sullivan. Director Fred Parnes (A Man Is Mostly Water) joins us to talk about his riveting portrait of a musician and artist who has made a career out of charting his own course. Victoria Williams has always carved her own path, but made sure she created one that others could follow. She started playing tennis when she was 6 years old, when a coach took notice of her talent and took extra initiative to develop her skills. It was a bit of an escape from the rough area she lived with her family, but it also made her a bit of an "other" between her two lives. That was part of the reason she selected an HBCU, where she could be the first of her siblings to attend college. While a degree in medical field was stable, it did not feed her creative side. Enter social media, where she could stretch those muscles and find a way toward a new career -- a career that let's her tell her stories her way. A career that lets people see that a queer, Black, Millennial, managing her anxiety and a beautiful relationship is thriving. Oh, and she organized a protest. VOTE FOR ME! Pastor Rons down with Pastor Trenton and Pastor Richard & Victoria Williams for a conversation titled "Welcome to the Neighborhood."
Syd Straw released her first album, Surprise, in 1989. The record was full of earnest, broken-hearted songs with an impressive range for a new artist. The album's earthy tone landed Straw at the leading edge of the alternative country curve, and it led a seemingly open-ended invitation for Straw to lend her vocals to some of the best in the business. To name a few, Straw has been onstage and on records with Los Lobos, Wilco, Dave Alvin, Loudon Wainwright III, Leo Kottke, Rickie Lee Jones, Matthew Sweet, Van Dyke Parks, Freedy Johnston, James McMurtry, Marc Ribot, David Sanborn, Was Not Was, Victoria Williams, the dBs, Jimmer Podrasky, and The Golden Palominos. Subsequent albums followed in 1996, 2005 and 2008, and although releases may have been spread out, the quality of Straw's output never suffered. Although Straw is perhaps best known for her vocals, the unique and indelible spirit that she brings to a song or a project is what makes her a legend. She is quirky, to be sure, but she's also endearing, pleasantly sardonic and always creative - a perfect combination for a singular artist.
