Just two major series, both UK dramas, are reviewed this episode and the Show of the Week vote is split! Plus Andrew catches up with Etoile. The Teacher (8 episodes, 9Now) The second season has little to do with the first series which starred Sheridan Smith. A new cast and a ramped up plot in S2 starts with promiscuous teachers on a school excursion. The first episode takes nasty turn when a student goes missing and the teachers are implicated in a murder investigation. The Stolen Girl (5 episodes, Disney+) Denise Gough is great playing a mother who realises her daughter won’t be coming back from a playdate one day after school. Strong performances too from Holliday Grainger as the abductor and Ambika Mod as a dogged journalist covering the abduction. Andrew also hands in his homework – watching the series Etoile which was first reviewed a week ago by James. He was pleasantly surprised.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

PAUL CHANDLER on some more contemporary psychological thrillers. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 1st 2024. PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI is back, and this week he wanted to use as our starting point some of the telly that he'd been watching recently, and, because that's always a good prompt for an interesting television-related discussion, we did precisely that. So, whilst this does mean that, once again, the television we're talking about is a lot more modern than I'm usually familiar with, it does also mean that we're returning to a type of television that I've discussed with PAUL on at least one previous edition of the show, as we delve into the murky waters of the contemporary psychological thriller serial, the kind of show that Channel Five in particular seems to be producing in large numbers, and which it is promoting widely to a large audience who, much like PAUL, completely lap this kind of thing up. Our starting point today takes in three of serials first broadcast in 2024 that PAUL has enjoyed, THE CUCKOO starring JILL HALFPENNY and LEE INGLEBY which is a four-part series; THE WIVES, a six-part thriller with JAMIE BAMBER, JO JOYNER and TAMSIN OUTHWAITE; and THE TEACHER, another four-parter featuring KARA TOINTON and WILL MELLOR which serves as a follow-up to a previous series from 2022 featuring SHERIDAN SMITH. As ever, whilst this may be our starting point, our conversation meanders into all sorts of other mostly-related areas, and I do hope that you enjoy our observations over the course of the hour. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Topics include the final return of the Benassi Brothers, the slender difference between friendship and romantic love, Sheridan Smith, Alex Rodriguez, the vocal pushing away and the pulling in, the specters of 2012, confessions and celebrations, lyrical bread crumbs and evolutions, Bjork's “Hunter”, and we phone a friend and reach mega-listener Vernon to discuss his special connections with this song, and who was ultimately Madonna's most successful relationship. Plus, Kenny blows his Madonna narrative up into epic proportions, a tribute to the long-suffering significant others of Madonna fans, and an extra special announcement to share at the top of the episode - does it really have to end?

In this episode of The Directors' Take podcast, your hosts Oz Arshad and Marcus Anthony Thomas are joined by Director Lewis Arnold, whose directing credits include MISFITS, BROADCHURCH, DARK MONEY, CLEANING UP featuring Sheridan Smith, DES featuring David Tennant, TIME featuring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham, SHERWOOD with Adeel Akhtar and he has most recently directed all seven episodes of the newly released ITV series based on the victims of the Yorkshire Ripper, THE LONG SHADOW. There aren't many better working directors in the UK that we could bring on to discuss how you can become a successful jobbing director in this industry. The second part of our conversation includes:   -What's the first thing you do when you get a new directing job? -What does casting look like? -How do you construct sequences for work you haven't written? -How do you schedule? -How do you run the edit process? -How do you manage the work/life balance as a working director?   Lewis Arnold has just finished directing all 7 parts of THE LONG SHADOW for New Pictures/ITV.  Prior to this he directed James Graham's SHERWOOD for House Productions/BBC1 and Jimmy McGovern's TIME, for BBC Studios starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. Both shows were nominated for multiple TV BAFTAs in 2022/23. TIME went onto win Best Mini-Series and Best Leading Actor for Sean Bean whilst SHERWOOD picked up the award for Best Supporting Actor for Adeel Akhtar. In 2020 he directed and executive produced DES for New Pictures and ITV, having created the three-part drama with writer Luke Neal. The series won the International Emmy Award for Best Performance By An Actor in 2021, and was also nominated for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series. The first episode had consolidated viewing figures of 11.4 million making it ITV's biggest new series since the launch of series CLEANING UP in January 2019, a show which he developed with writer Mark Marlow, directing the first four episodes for Sister Pictures. It was on graduating from the National Film and Television School in March 2013, that Lewis embarked on directing his first TV project, directing with two episodes of the final series of BAFTA-winning C4 show, MISFITS. He followed this up by directing the first four episodes of Russell T Davies's new E4 show, BANANA, and was named a Broadcast Magazine Hotshot 2014 for his work on both shows. Other credits include BROADCHURCH and HUMANS, which became Channel 4's most successful original drama in over 20 years when it aired in 2015. After directing two episodes on series one, he was asked back a year later to direct the lead block of the second series for Kudos and AMC. Lewis is also represented in the US by Matt Greenberg and Jon Cassir at CAA.   Nuggets of the week Oz: Lucy Prebble posts her intro to the Succession Season 3 scripts book Marcus: Under the Skin - Behind the scenes Lewis:  Jeff Thompson - We all get the same amount of time in a day BFI NETWORK: Directing for TV with Lewis Arnold Directors' Now   Credits Music by Oliver Wegmüller   Socials Instagram: @TheDirectorsTakePodcast Twitter: @DirectorsTake Lewis Arnold: Twitter (X) & Instagram   If you have any questions relating to the episode or have topics you would like covering in future releases, reach out to us at TheDirectorsTake@Outlook.com.

I am back! Jarod is also back!! This time HE brings ME some Doctor Who radio drama!!! In January 2007, a new series of Eighth Doctor audio adventures was broadcast on BBC7. These starred McGann alongside Sheridan Smith as a new companion named Lucie Miller. There were eight 50-minute episodes in total; the first and last stories were two-parters, and the rest were single episodes. These adventures have since been released on CD and that is how we listened to it. In 2008, BBC7 broadcast the second series of The New Eighth Doctor Adventures (which Big Finish had already released on CD). All fourteen episodes were then repeated in 2009, and the final two-part story later that year. Big Finish has gone on to produce two further series of these Adventures, and four selected stories from the third series were aired in 2010, with BBC Radio 4 Extra (as Radio 7 became) skipping ahead to the fourth series in early 2013. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/richard-templeman/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/richard-templeman/support

Inspired by one of the most beloved British family films of all time, RAILWAY CHILDREN is an enchanting, moving, and heart-warming adventure for a new generation. 1944 – As life in Britain's cities becomes increasingly perilous, three evacuee children – Lily (Beau Gadsdon), Pattie (Eden Hamilton) and Ted (Zac Cudby) Watts – are sent by their mother from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth.  There to meet them on the train station platform are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her iconic role in the original film), her daughter, Annie (Sheridan Smith), and grandson Thomas (Austin Haynes), and with their help the evacuees are soon settling into their new life in the countryside. When the children discover injured American soldier Abe (KJ Aikens), hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home. Director Morgan Matthews (A Brilliant Young Mind) is our guest for a conversation on the motivation and goals that he had in mind for an updated version a classic film, working with a raw and talented young cast that includes Beau Gadson and KJ Aikens as well as established veterans actors like Jenny Agutter, Sheridan Smith, John Bradley and Tom Courtenay.
