As a parent, as a mom, you set the tone in your home. So today we are going to talk about ways to eliminate the stress for when you are dealing with a frustrated kid. Here are three questions you can ask your child, for in the moment: What's wrong? How can I help? What can be done about it right now? Also on today's episode I share my latest travel story, Jesse and I also give you a reading update. I read a letter from one of our listeners, and I touched a little bit from my book, Love-Centered Parenting, about my flare prayer technique. Besides these three questions, please remember to take the time to take a breath. Try listening, pointing them to Jesus, letting them know that we are with them, and helping them to come up with some creative solutions. And sometimes that will involve just asking them more questions. If you have any techniques, please feel free to share. We love hearing from our listeners. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [01:15] - What to do when your child is frustrated. [02:00] - I have a travel horror story to share today. [04:02] - While I was stuck in Charlotte for four hours, my phone was starting to run out of battery. [07:46] - Word to the wise: if there is wet carpet in the airport don't assume that it's water spilled. [08:41] - I do have a book update. [09:57] - We share a letter from a listener about Jesse's advice on reading. [12:05] - Are you making progress over who you were yesterday? [12:35] - Jesse shares his book update. [13:49] - Okay, how to help a child who is frustrated. [16:02] - I also have been very guilty of getting frustrated at a child for being frustrated. [17:52] - Instead, stepping back and asking for God's help [19:13] - First question is to simply ask, “what is wrong?”. [21:23] - And then asking, “how can I help you?”. [22:39] - Finally, just saying, “what can you do about it?”. [23:53] - Instead of you suggesting things, ask questions and kind of lead them to some solutions, so that they are learning. I'm a big reader. I have a parallel reading strategy where I read typically 4 books a month. I know this seems like a lot but it allows me to hit my goals in small chunks instead of feeling super overwhelmed. I wanted to share today some of my fav books that have helped with my own personal growth this year (and some bonus ones I've read in the past) ➡️ Standing Strong by Alli Worthington ➡️ Free of Me by Sharon Hoddee Miller ➡️ The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks (re-read this year) ➡️ The Body is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor ➡️ To Hell with the Hustle by Jefferson Bethke ➡️ Untamed by Glennon Doyle (re-read this year) ➡️ Atomic Habits by James Clear (re-read this year) ➡️ Love Centered Parenting by Crystal Paine ➡️ The 12 Week Year by Brian P Moran (re-read this year) These books were on the top of my list of non-fiction personal growth books for the year! And you'll notice that 4 of them were books I've already read and chose to read again in 2021! I love to re-read books that I love because I feel like I pick out different things each time! I get most of my books from the library and honestly only buy books after I've read them once and I know I'll re-read them so these ones are going on my bookshelf soon (if I don't already own them!) Our topic today – our takes on courtship and dating - might be considered a bit controversial by some! You may recall an early episode of the podcast in which we talked about our own history involving this topic, and if you did hear that episode, then you may also remember that we have a pretty unique story of how Jesse and I ended up in a relationship together and how we had strict courtship rules set by our parents. We are going to dive into this in this episode and reveal how we plan to approach this with our own kids. We received a question from a listener recently asking us if we allow our older kids to date, which is what inspired us to do a podcast episode focused on this topic, and as Jesse puts it, we prefer to see ourselves as sources of guidance for our kids rather than as dictators, and with that being said, while we realize that this may come as a surprise to some of you, we actually do not have rules about dating. What we instead do is have conversations with our kids rather than lay down hard and fast rules. Children need to learn how to make good decisions for themselves, and as I discuss in my book Love-Centered Parenting, it's so important to love our kids in such a way that we are leaning into them and listening to them, doing our best to understand their emotions and their struggles. We should, after all, be raising kids so that they can become adults as opposed to perpetually dependent children. I hope that this episode was helpful for you in one way or another! Please reach out to me as I love hearing from you, and be sure to tune in next time! In This Episode: [0:32] – Today's topic is courtship and dating! [2:20] – We learn what's saving Jesse's life this week. [5:42] – I reveal that we recently got a new stroller which has been saving my life lately! [8:28] – You can get the double stroller that we bought for a relatively low price on Amazon! [9:48] – Jesse just finished Black Ice by Brad Thor. [10:58] – I just finished re-reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. [12:55] – I share an email and an iTunes review sent in by listeners. [15:40] – Jesse offers a funny tip about listening to podcasts at a certain speed. [17:32] – We dive into the main topic – courtship vs. dating. [19:58] – I argue that teenagers are more apt to listen if parents have conversations with them as opposed to just laying down rules. [22:45] – Teenagers, I point out, tend to live in the moment and not look to the future. [25:22] – I point out that each and every child is different and cannot be placed into molds. [27:40] – We have tried to perfect the art of stoicism as parents. Email can often be a monster that needs to be tamed, but it doesn't have to be! Jesse and I share an interesting conversation in this episode about how to tame it – interesting in that we have very different methods for doing it. With more than fifteen years of having my own business, I have learned some strategies that I think might be helpful for you! While Jesse tends to procrastinate when it comes to managing his email inbox, my strategy is pretty different because I cannot stand having a bunch of emails (either read or unread) in my inbox, and the little red icons on your phone that tell you how many emails that you need to tend to drive me crazy! If you're anything like me, then I am hoping that my four strategies will be helpful to you! (1) Unsubscribe mercilessly! (2) Use the delete button and the archive button to avoid clutter! (3) Fanatically set up filters! (4) Don't procrastinate; deal with emails as soon as possible! If you let your emails build up on the daily, then your inbox is going to quickly become a monster that will be very difficult to tame! Listen in to this episode to hear about how you can help tame that monster and even prevent it from ever getting that wild again! Email, after all, is supposed to be a productive tool, not a stressful monster! In This Episode: [0:32] – Today's topic is all about email and how to stay on top of it. [1:35] – I have probably processed millions of emails over the last fifteen or so years. [2:10] – Our daughter just started a new job! [4:57] – I share an email that I received about my book Love-Centered Parenting. [7:45] – Lean in and love your kids, and be grateful when they want to include you! [9:03] – I just recently finished reading The Woman with the Blue Star by Pam Jenoff. [11:59] – Jesse recently finished reading Andrew Huff's novel Right Cross. [14:53] – Find out what has been saving my life recently. [17:44] – Jesse talks about his recent trip. [19:35] – Our daughter recently went on a retreat for school which was coincidentally the same camp where Jesse stayed. [23:11] – Jesse's strategy of taking care of emails is deleting emails after their time sensitivity has expired. [25:30] – Unsubscribe from unhelpful email lists! [26:53] – Make use of the delete button and the archive button! [29:42] – Set up filters in your inbox! [32:56] – Deal with emails immediately! [35:57] – Set aside designated time to spend on processing emails. [36:45] – Use Unroll.Me and increments of fifteen minutes to process through especially saturated inboxes. Do you worry that you're messing up your kids? Do you get stressed when you think about their futures? New York Times bestselling author Crystal Paine knows how you feel. A mom of four, Crystal has struggled with anxiety over parenting. She wanted to parent with grace, instead of a system of rules where kids are expected to do all the right things. She wanted to be a safe place for her children, and she definitely didn't want to be remembered as the sort of mom who yelled, wounded her kids with words, or worse, cared more about her reputation than her kids' hearts. In this episode, Crystal shares the life-changing lessons that God has been teaching her about raising kids with love and grace. In this episode we discuss: ▫️The root of why we often feel so frustrated and irritated with our kids ▫️How to keep going when you want to give up ▫️How to stop parenting for your own approval and reputation ▫️The four most important choices you can make as a parent ▫️Help you get your kids to talk to you At a time when parenting is more complicated than ever, this is the message that will bring you freedom, hope, and healing. This week's love offering is to “let God's love pour through us to other people. I don't have anything to give unless I'm filling myself up with Him.” “Cram so much truth in that there is no space for lies. Then when someone bumps into you, God's love spills out.” Connect with Crystal: https://moneysavingmom.com
You probably know Crystal Paine best from her blog, books, and resources at The Money Saving Mom. Crystal has been a trusted help and friend to moms all over the world since 2007. She shares how to tackle the lie that your parenting isn't measuring up, how to replace those lies with truth, and how to do less correcting and more connecting with your children.

Sitting in an emergency room with her husband and child, it felt like the world was crumbling around her and Crystal hit her all-time parenting low. That experience was the jarring, life-altering catalyst she needed to dig in and transform her parenting. Crystal shares the raw account of how she shifted her parenting focus and it transformed her entire family in the process.Let's jump in!Where to find Crystal and her book:Her book - Love Centered ParentingHer website: https://moneysavingmom.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themoneysavingmom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MoneySavingMomBIG NEWS!!! The statistics are slow in coming, but according to November 2020 findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between April and October 2020, hospital emergency departments saw an increase in the total number of visits that were from kids for mental health needs. And while that is true and terribly tragic, statistics also show that anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide were already on the rise even before this global pandemic. One report from the ADAA (Anxiety & Depression Association of America) states that 1 in 20 kids struggle with mental health disorders each year. Today we hope to offer you some help. Our guest today is Crystal Paine. She's the founder of MoneySavingMom.com, host of “The Crystal Paine Show” podcast, New York Times bestselling author of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, and author of Money-Making Mom. She's just released a new book, Love-Centered Parenting that is quite a departure from her normal offerings. But she's opening up about a very vulnerable piece in her family's story in order to help change that 1 in 20 statistic.
Dr. Sasha Shillcutt and Crystal Paine, founder of MoneySavingMom.com, host of “The Crystal Paine Show” podcast, New York Times bestselling author of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, and author of Money-Making Mom talk about the struggle of being a parent while leading a successful business online and how to balance authenticity with privacy. They discuss what love-centered parenting really is, and how deep self-reflections on relationships over reputation can help us identify limiting beliefs and what is holding us back from peace.
What’s holding you back from living your dreams? Could it be the lies that your head keeps telling you? Instead of being limited by those lies, learn how you can start putting them behind you and living out your calling with author Paul Angone. Paul has now written four books, each one dealing with the issues twenty and thirty somethings are constantly dealing with. His most recent book, 25 Lies Twentysomethings Need to Stop Believing, dives into the specific topic of the lies we tell ourselves and how they’re holding us back. He starts the book off with an extremely compelling story. One night he helped a man stop from committing suicide simply by telling him that he was wanted here. A sense and feeling of belonging is a powerful thing. When it’s taken away terrible things follow. Listen as we chat about the lies and how you can overcome them. The most important thing to remember is that you have to keep taking small steps toward your goals. Stop saying that you can’t do things and realize that there are steps you can take every day that will get you closer to the big dream. We’re also chatting about society’s need to step into the awkward rather than run from it. So often these days we hide behind our phones when we don’t want to deal with the reality in front of us. But you could be missing out on huge opportunities. In This Episode: [00:33] Welcome to the show Paul Angone. [01:19] Learn more about Paul and why he’s so passionate about dispelling lies. [04:09] How did he choose the 25 lies in his book and are there more? [05:33] Learn more about the story that he opens up the book with. [07:57] What does he mean that we have to “war for hope?” [11:26] His advice for the person who is looking to make that first step into change. [14:38] How did he get to where he is today? [18:57] Learn more about how he’s battled his own lies. [22:32] How do we help the next generation to skip the belief in the lies? [26:04] The awkward moments are when the beauty in life happens. There’s a trend going around on Instagram talking all about assumptions. I decided it’d be fun to see what kinds of assumptions our followers have about us and the family. I posted the question and the responses were very interesting. First things first, these really didn’t seem like fact finding questions. They genuinely felt like, based on what we’ve posted, this is how people perceive us. Which is eye opening in some ways but still fun to address on the podcast. The first assumption we chat about is whether or not Jesse gets nervous answering questions on the podcast. To be fair, Jesse has said many times that he’d rather not know what’s coming on the podcast, but sometimes he’d rather be prepared. So yes, sometimes he gets nervous but sometimes not. Others assume that we never get loud with the kids. Not necessarily true. This is definitely something we’ve worked on over the years, but we’re human and sometimes find ourselves failing in the moment. We do try not to lead in anger however. You all had a ton of assumptions about us and the family. Which in many ways makes me feel like I haven’t shown enough real behind the scenes moments. There is a reason for that though. In many ways, our journey is very much the story of our children and it’s not our place to put their business out on the internet. We do try to be as transparent about our thoughts, beliefs and actions, but we refuse to overshare our kid’s lives. I’m excited about the responses we received. I hope we debunked some of the assumptions and clarified others. What assumptions do you have about us and our family? In This Episode: [00:33] We are tackling your assumptions as noted on the ‘Gram. [02:45] Are these assumptions or just questions people want more information on? [03:23] Does Jesse get nervous answering questions on the podcast? [04:16] Someone assumes that Jesse and I never yell or get loud with the kids. [05:59] Is our family extremely close and always together? [08:39] We actually do have a pet. A hedgehog. [10:30] Is it really assumed that we’re a fun couple? [11:20] Another follower assumes that we’re gun enthusiasts. [12:53] We did not meet at a Christian college. [13:53] We definitely have our fighting moments. [16:40] One person thinks we’re a lot more wild and crazy than we let on. [18:45] Believe it or not, we’re definitely not perfect. [21:14] Another assumption is that we expect our kids to follow the lifestyle we were brought up in. [23:31] Jesse is definitely not more of a clean freak than I am. [25:45] We definitely tease and bicker. Plus learn which of us is quieter than the other. [30:08] Do we eat a ton of ice cream or dessert? [31:36] Plus a few random things about food, our first kiss, and whether or not we curse. [34:18] TV is not a big thing in our house. [36:01] Multiple people have assumptions on who wears the pants in the family. Pushing out the lies, and leaning into the truth that you are loved by God; how would that impact your life? I realized recently that I have done over 60 podcast interviews on other shows since mid-February, but we haven’t really talked about Love-Centered Parenting on our own. We’re fixing that today! I used to be the parent who constantly felt the burden of raising well-behaved children who always make good choices. Their choices were a direct reflection of my parenting skills and as such I had to be sure that they always did what was right. That burden seemed so unbelievably heavy though and it didn’t feel like a weight that I could bear. So I started praying to the Lord about these feelings and what I found and what He showed me was so liberating. You see, if you are the one responsible for your children’s choices, then you’re also the one responsible for saving them. That simply isn’t true. It is not your job to make your children good people. It is your job to model good behavior and model God’s love and allow them to make their own choices and decisions. Listen as we chat about the four pillars of the book and why I truly believe that when you lean in with love, listen well, react in humility, and let go, you are giving your children the tools they need to make the right choices in life. You can’t make their decisions for them, but you can help them understand the difference between good and bad. In This Episode: [00:33] We are chatting all about Love-Centered Parenting today! [01:51] Having an emergency fund is saving our lives this week. [04:39] Getting a second quote saved our lives too since it was significantly less than the first one. [06:33] Jesse is still reading the same book as last week. I’ve been participating in The Bible Project and it has been fantastic. [10:17] I’m digging deep into the content of Love-Centered Parenting today. [11:55] We cannot save our kids so we need to stop carrying that burden around. [13:08] It is not our job as parents to make our kids make good choices. [14:10] The four choices parents should make and the entire premise of the book. [15:01] Jesse’s thoughts on “leaning in and loving.” [17:07] Is there pride, fear, or selfishness at the root of your reaction to your kids’ behavior? [18:25] Why you need to listen well. [21:26] Finding the root cause of behavior is very important. [22:49] It’s also important to lead with humility. [25:51] Last but not least, we have to just let go. [27:31] Why this really is the no-fail guide to parenting. This conversation is about so much more than parenting! It’s about the heart. It’s about finding freedom from the swirl of lies going on in your heart and your mind. It’s about replacing those lies with truth and finding clarity in who God is and how He sees you. Crystal Paine is a mom of 4, a foster mom, a New York Times Best Selling Author, and the successful business woman behind themoneysavingmom! Phew! But a few years ago she found herself in a parenting crisis when one of her kids nearly got expelled from school and became suicidal. Something had to change. Something had to get fixed. Crystal wanted the 3-step plan and instead, she found that she was the one being healed. She had been parenting from a place of performance, not love. Her own heart needed to be loved by God before she could begin to love her kids in a way that would heal them. If this deeply resonated with you, check out my free Lies vs Truth download. (I know some of you will disagree with me on this, which is why I want you to tune in!) I'll also talk to my friend Crystal Paine about her new book, Love-Centered Parenting, and how we can love ourselves while loving our kids. And we'll close today's show with a few journal questions. Why Loving Yourself Doesn't Have to be Selfish Some of you are already mad at me for bringing this up. As Christians, we're not supposed to love ourselves, right? Here are three reasons why self-love is actually a good thing. Become a Great Parent with Crystal Paine You can't offer something you don't have. So, if you're not receiving the love of your heavenly father, how can you give love to others? In today's interview, Crystal Paine-author, speaker and entrepreneur-talks about her new book, Love-Centered Parenting, and why loving our kids well starts with letting God love us. Love Others (as Yourself) "The most important [commandment]," answered Jesus, "is this . . . 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Mark 12:29-31 (NIV) When Jesus says to "love your neighbor as yourself," he's implying that we already do love ourselves. It's our gut instinct to love and protect and take care of ourselves, so we should have that same level of care for the people around us. Let's unpack this idea with a few journal questions: Who's someone you love? Describe your love for that person. Be honest: What do you think about yourself? Why is it hard for you to love yourself?

We're shifting gears this week and talking about parenting! I don't usually cover parenting here on the show, so I invited my good friend Crystal Paine to join me. Now, you may know her as the Money Saving Mom, but her message goes beyond good deals at the grocery store. And I'm so glad she's with us today to talk about what it's like to be vulnerable, especially when it comes to parenting our children. We dive into love-centered parenting, mom guilt, and what happens when we let our kids make mistakes. She also talks about her latest book and the hard-won lessons she's taken away from shifting from results-based parenting to a love-centered model of raising her kids. You're going to want to stay until the end of this episode, friends! Tune in to hear: Crystal's journey with one of her children, who was experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts How our mental, physical and spiritual health affect our parenting styles and choices Practical tips for productive communication with your kids and how to ask for (and accept!) their feedback Favorite quotes: 1. When we cram truth in and we continue to call out the lie and replace it with truth, it rewires our brain. Like scripture talks about renewing our mind, it's that rewiring of the way that we've always thought that allows us to renew instead of walking in lies and letting those lies be what we lead with. It allows us to have freedom and to walk in truth, and then to live out of that truth.2. Are the words that you are saying to yourself, about yourself and letting just kind of swirl around in your brain, are those words that you would say to other people? 3. Our kids are paying attention to that life we're living before them. And that's probably going to be the most powerful sermon we are ever going to preach to them. 4. Ultimately, I want to be able to send my kids out as adults, not dependent children. And so if I'm going to do that, I have to let go and not just create all these rules in order to protect them from never getting hurt, never having to make choices and never making mistakes. 5. How we interact with our kids affects how they view God. In this episode I answer this business question: Would you rather have in your team a nice fool or a reliable jerk?
