This week, I'm with the wonderful Crystal Paine, otherwise known as Money-Saving Mom. Crystal and I started our online careers at similar times. We both pioneered what it looked like to be a mom and an entrepreneur and do it all surrounded by kids.  Crystal has grown a brilliant company and is the epitome of a smart girl. Full disclosure, she is one of my business coaching clients - and I say that makes her even smarter. I'm thrilled for you to hear all the behind-the-scenes information of Crystal's business. Crystal Paine is the founder of MoneySavingMom.com, host of The Crystal Paine Show podcast, and New York Times bestselling author of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, and Money-Making Mom. In her latest book, The Time-Saving Mom: How to Juggle a Lot, Enjoy Your Life, and Accomplish What Matters Most, Crystal offers practical steps, simplified systems, and time-saving hacks to help you wrap your time and energy around what matters most in your life — even when you feel pulled in a thousand different directions.   Join Crystal and I as we talk about: Crystal's background and journey Making mistakes as you grow your business and learn from your failures The importance of getting help and knowing when to say no Ways to protect yourself from comparison What is working best in 2024 - Social media insights you don't want to miss! Favorite quotes:  6:50 - “There were a lot of failures, trials, errors, mistakes, and missteps along the way, but I look back and really feel like that was what set me up for success because I learned so much through making a lot of mistakes and doing things wrong.” 18:47 - “If I could go back and do it again, I would've gotten help way earlier, and I also wouldn't have said yes to so many things.” 25:17 -  “In my own home, stepping away from the internet multiple times a day and having Sunday where I am offline has been so good for my soul.” 31:42 - “So doing a few things very strategically to just increase your engagement really makes a difference overall in what posts are being seen.” 36:35—”Go into building a business recognizing that there is going to be a lot of work on the front end and be willing to put in the work. I think a lot of people don't succeed because they quit too soon.”    Coaching this week (44:00 audio) My Best Strategy for Overcoming Procrastination  This week, I'm sharing a tip called negative visualization. It's imagining what could happen if we don't do something, letting us see the cost of inaction and makes us more likely to take that first step in work, health, or friendships. Pick one thing you've been putting off and start this today.   Recommendations (51:36 audio) My fun recommendation this week is a little charger that goes on your keychain to charge your Apple watch. If you have the same problem I do, your Apple watch dies all the time. You can use it to charge your watch during the day so it's charged when you need it.   Links to great things we discussed:  Crystal Paine Website Crystal Paine Instagram The Crystal Paine Show Promise Dreamy Mango Serum The West Wing Lost Portable Keychain Charger for Apple Watch  Secret Superpower Quiz Create a Course Alli on YouTube Remaining You While Raising Them Little Things Studio Little Things Studio is a woman-owned small business bringing daily reminders of beauty and truth to your home and life. “Allow yourself to be so filled up with the truth of God's Word, that there's not space for the lies to take up residence.” New York Times bestselling author and podcast host, Crystal Paine, shares about her motherhood journey and transformation from parenting for approval to love-centered parenting. Listen in as Crystal gives practical wisdom, fills our minds with truth and reminds us to anxiously anticipate God's faithfulness each day. The Moms in Prayer Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. Her desire is to help women across the globe live with more joy, purpose, and intention in their everyday lives. She lives with her husband and six kids in the Nashville, Tennessee, area, where she is actively involved in her local church. Her biggest passions are helping women understand how the gospel can radically transform their lives, raising awareness for foster care, going on adventures with her family (locally, domestically, and internationally), finding great deals at the grocery store, having heartfelt conversations, and trying to read too many books at one time!   SCRIPTURES  Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:13 ESV I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 NKJV So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. John 19:30 NKJV I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. "It's never too late. You can pick up right where you are". Great advice from today's guest. I am so excited to be interviewing David Thomas, the author of Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build On for Life. There is no greater time to start than right now. Make sure the males in your life are being given the tools they need to understand what strength looks like. It is okay to narrate your experiences as a parent, an adult, and even as a human to your children. We cover a lot in such a short time, so make sure you are ready to take down some notes. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [01:24] - I ask David to introduce himself to you. [03:15] - Is this something that you always saw yourself doing? Was this your dream job? [05:34] - Since you've been doing this for a long time, have you seen a shift in what parents are struggling with and what teens are struggling with? [06:38] - Do you feel like there is a reason for that? What's at the root of that? [08:52] - A while back, you were asked to write about raising worry-free boys. And you chose not to do it. I'd love for you to explain why. [11:31] - When boys come up against the discomfort of life that you and I know is just a part of being a human. [13:09] - I'd love for you to define "emotionally strong". [15:43] - We want to raise emotionally strong boys. How do we go about that? [19:42] - I share a quote from the book. [20:09] - How do we, as parents, set that example for our kids when we're just feeling so frustrated? [23:46] - Moms often feel like "if I admit to my child that I don't have it all figured out, I'm somehow failing them". I share a story from my childhood. [27:42] - I would love for you to speak to that mom right now. She is feeling like it's too much, it's too overwhelming. She feels she doesn't have what it takes. She doesn't know what to do with her child. [31:36] - There are so many tools in this book, not just tools for your son, tools for you as well. Today, we're going to talk about goal setting for children. We will share some ways that we've encouraged our kids to set goals and the thoughts behind how we approach goal setting for our kids. It's all about the example that you set, how you approach it, and making sure that you're helping them take ownership of it. Then it's just continuing to encourage, cheer, and lead again and again and again. We'd love to hear from you. What advice, ideas, practical tips, and suggestions do you have for helping kids? When it comes to goal setting, send us an email we'd love to read your responses. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [01:14] I taught Jesse something new this week. [02:28] - You tape your mouth at night before you go to bed so that you don't breathe out of your mouth. You only breathe out of your nose because there are a lot of health benefits. [05:00] - I have been having some skin issues and I think a lot of it has to do with me nursing exclusively and not taking my prenatal vitamins, which you're supposed to do after you have a baby. [06:05] - I explained all the health benefits and what this mouth-taping thing was to Jesse and he suggested we try it during the day. [08:12] Blistex's medicated bomb has saved my life this week and I would highly recommend it. [08:22] Jesse has a book update for us. [10:50] I also have a book update and have been reading a few different books right now. [14:08] - One thing we've talked so much about this past year is what can you control. [15:33] - Today's podcast inspiration comes from a listener. [16:19] - I think that the first step to helping your children set goals is to model it for them. [19:56] - We had lots of conversations involving them and talking about it conceptually. [21:44] - Recognizing their interest, their personality type, and what is going to motivate them. [25:41] - Sometimes it's just like a little bit of challenging them and providing encouragement that you think they can do more. [26:51] - And finally, just being their cheerleaders. [27:30] - Let's focus on celebrating the progress that they make. This can fuel their desire to do even more. [30:13] Thank you and closing remarks. [04:53] - None other than my water bottle that I have right now is currently saving my life. [06:43] - Are you ready to talk about goals? [07:09] - I think when you set a goal, it needs to be something you can measure. So, it's not a goal if there's not a finish line. [07:29] - We're going to start out with health and fitness goals. [10:04] - Most of Jesse's goals could be considered workout goals in some way. [12:04] - I'm cracking up because mine and Jesse's goals are the complete opposite. [15:10] - The body and hormones do weird things. So I'm going to be taking good care of myself. [17:09] - I talked about giving myself grace. A healthy baby and a healthy mom is what's most important for me. [18:13] - Prioritizing relationships and community. We are actively working towards building more community. [18:54] - Moving on to family goals. [20:46] - Community is a priority for this next season. Consistency with meals and family meals. Welcome to the family, our son Micah. Today's episode is dedicated to Micah's birth story. This was my easiest birth by far. The time leading up to the birth and afterward was pretty eventful. Jesse and I walk you through the birth of our son Micah, giving you a rundown leading up to birth, the events taking place during the birth, and the wonderful feeling of a successful delivery.  I touch on the good moments and some moments that were intense with the contractions. At one point I was pushing really hard and kind of feeling like I just would rather give up right now. There had been so much activity, and then he was born and it was just like quiet. Then he cried. He was healthy, he was good, and I was good. I thought at one point, 'how did I push that baby out?'. Micah has been such a gift and we are so happy to share our story with you. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [00:57] We are going to share Micah's birth story today. [02:43] - I had multiple sonograms, leading up to the birth and we made the decision for me to be induced. [04:47] - Jesse and I both prayed a lot in the two weeks leading up to my induction date that I would naturally go into labor. [04:54] A week before the induction, baby D got really sick. [09:22] Another reason we prayed I would go early was because of an upcoming tournament. [11:16] I have a highlight on my Instagram profile about the whole experience before and during called “My Birth”. [13:54] My hope was for it to be as natural as possible and to be fully present. [16:36] Always advocate for what you need at the hospital. [18:40] - I was present, aware of everything that was going on, talking in between contractions. [19:29] - It felt like natural contractions versus Pitocin contractions. And that was such a gift because in between contractions, there was almost zero pain. [21:51] I was trying to focus and rely upon the Lord through some intense contractions. [22:20] Jesse and I joke about the men's perspective of birth. [23:27] I still didn't feel ready to push. [25:04] My preferred birthing method is always on hands and knees. [27:20] - It was this surreal moment when he came out because I was thinking, I didn't feel like he was ready to come out and there he is. [29:59] - So instead of us admiring our beautiful brand-new baby, we're trying to figure out what to do about this poop explosion. [31:20] It was such a wonderful birth experience, especially after a rough pregnancy. [33:13] - We are grateful to be on the other side of Micah's birth. This is going to be our last episode before I take maternity leave for June and July. Today we are going to talk about my unexpected hospital stay. I went in for a routine ultrasound, never expecting to be admitted into the hospital, thinking I might be having an emergency c-section. We have been quiet about this pregnancy, not sharing too much. We have done a lot of research on the possibilities of what this pregnancy could mean. We kept running into new things, starting with some issues at 11 weeks. The issues continued off and on, very consistently. In the process of checking things out, there was a lot the doctors found out. We have also learned so much about so many different things because of these near-complications. I have learned that I can't control everything and I am so grateful for seeing God's hand in this pregnancy. Jesse and I also share our reading update and what has been saving my life. Make sure to follow me on Instagram if you would like any updates and can't wait until I return from my maternity leave in August. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [01:19] – Jesse has a new book that he is reading. [03:33] – What's saving my life and my reading update is actually rolled up in one. [05:33] – Let's talk about my unexpected hospital stay. [07:05] – I have never had a transverse baby. [09:51] – There is a cause for concern when you are still bleeding in your second and third trimester. [12:36] – It took over forty-five minutes to try and get the baby to move. [15:21] – My Doctor told me at 33 weeks & 5 days, that there was a chance I was having my baby that day. [18:17] –I called Jesse to let him know we might be having a baby and he needed to get to the hospital. [21:50] – I was admitted to the hospital, where they kept monitoring me for an entire 24 hours. [23:47] – The baby must have been in a super-deep, sleep cycle. [24:58] – We didn't have a baby at 33 weeks & 5 days. [25:37] – I struggled with fear when I came home. [27:42] – Another little tidbit that shows God's sovereignty, because I was supposed to be in Vermont. [29:50] - This pregnancy has been such an opportunity to trust God. I hear from so many moms about today's topic. And joining me in the studio for this conversation I have Angela Perritt, who has just released a beautiful new bible called, Young Women Love God Greatly Bible. We are going to dive into the topic of how we help teen girls or teenagers in general, build their relationship with Jesus.  I hear from a lot of women, that they read the Bible but they don't know what steps to take next. Angela and I talk about what those steps could be and how to go beyond just reading the scripture. Angela wants women and moms out there to give themselves grace and know that it's okay to have questions and have doubts. We go over the wisdom and lessons we want the young women or any teenager that are under our guidance, to have in their lives when walking with God and to know it is okay to not understand the first time or to make mistakes – each experience is going to be a new meaning. You don't have to know everything, every time.  You need to do what is best by asking and praying because this is your relationship that you are building with the Lord, so it will not look like everyone else's. We would love to hear from you and what steps you are taking to enrich this connection and share any experiences you have with today's topic. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [01:12] – Angela, I am just thrilled that you are here to share from your wisdom to what God has just put in your heart and your passions. I would love for you to start by introducing yourself to my audience. [02:50] – Angela goes over the process behind creating a Bible. [05:46] – I think there are so many teens right now who are really questioning the existence of God and also the goodness of God. [06:35] – How do you wrestle with this, with your girls? [07:41] – Angela talks about her ideal audience for the Bible she created. [09:06] – Could a girl who has no exposure to the Bible pick this one up and understand it? [13:16] – Have you always known how to study scripture?  [15:37] – Angela shares how she is installing the love of God in her home and with her family. [17:31] - Angela gives advice on taking the time to reading God's word. [21:00] – What encouragement do you have for a mom, who is seeing her teenager struggle? Last week we mentioned our daughters going to prom together. We talked about how their relationship has developed and some of the different seasons they have walked through. We got a lot of questions from people asking, how did our daughters developed a relationship to where they call each other their best friends, when before it wasn't always like that.  So, we asked Kathrynne and Kaitlynn for their insights and input on their relationship and both Jesse and I also add some of our thoughts and things from our perspective on this. Kathrynne has three points we go over: don't force it, learning emotional language, and time. A few thoughts I have had is loving your kids right where they are at. Our kids pick up so much from us, not just our words but our actions and emotions. Talking positively to them, about them to each other, and about them to others. Time has helped them get a different perceptive, allowing them to walk through different seasons and just a part of growing up and being a teenager.  We can give our kids a lot of things, guiding and helping but ultimately, they have to make their own choices and actions. I also give a book update and share the fun thing that is saving our lives this week, we are playing Wordle. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [12:08] – Kathrynne gives us three points stating they are very instrumental regarding her relationship with her sister. [12:24] – Kathrynne's first point: don't force it. [14:44] – Kathrynne's second point: learning emotional language. [17:29] – When the girls started to learn, “when you did that, it made me feel like this”, it changed the barriers of their relationship. [21:21] – Jesse brings the aspect that may encourage your kids to be friends, if they see that in your marriage. [21:55] – Kathrynne's third point: giving it time. We have a big topic to tackle today and we are devoted to the whole episode about your burning questions on raising teenagers. One of the big things about this topic is that we want to respect our children's privacy. We aren't thinking about how this may affect them today, we are considering the rimifacions of how it will affect them years down the road. Jesse and I know that we can't be perfect and that mistakes will be made, from past experiences and in the future. Trust and truth are the basic foundation we have built with our kids and it is something that we keep on building in our relationship with them. Everything we try to do now is to help make sure they know how to be independent adults.  This talk is filled with our experience and how we raise our children. Some of the answers and situations may not fit your style and that is okay. We can all be different but still listen and take away what works best for your family. We would love to hear from you, how you handle some of this scenario, or if you have a question we didn't get to answer. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show.  [00:55] - I was inspired by this topic from a follower on Instagram. [03:15] - In this episode Jesse and I are going to tackle the questions we received from my instagram poll. [04:01] - How do you decide when to push your kids versus letting them fail? [05:24] - letting our kids fail in small ways in a safe space, to prevent larger failures in the future. [07:22] - As much as possible, we try to say yes and we try to keep our no's to a minimum. [10:48] - There is a fine line between helping and enabling. You don't stand in the way of lessons that need to be learned. [11:57] - At what age did they get a first job for real money, and how to help them do that? [14:23] - Encourage them as soon as they are able too, just a gentle nudging. [17:04] - They have just a lot of little, personal responsibilities. [17:45] - Today's sponsor is CodeSpark Academy [19:49] - There were a lot of questions about technology and social media, see show notes for previous podcast episodes. [20:47] - How do you talk to your kids about the birds and the bees? [23:40] - We talk about being honest. [25:00] - Prepping them for the possibility that it is going to happen and giving them the tools on how to respond in an uncomfortable/awkward situation. [25:46] - how to deal with teens who don't want to share with their dad? And I think it could also be with their mom. [26:45] - One of the best things that we did years ago was asking our kids flat out, “what do we do that makes you feel loved? And what do we do that makes you feel unloved?”. [28:22] - Parents, pay attention to how much time we are correcting and how much time we are connecting. [31:10] - Just be in their world and just let them see that you care about them. [34:10]- Being truthful with them about our struggles, and asking for their forgiveness. “Home is for learning and not for perfection and while we're learning we are loved” are some powerful words that Nicole Homan shares with us. I am very honored to have Nicole on today's show. She is the author of They Call Me Mama where she shares her story of raising 14 kids. That it's okay to not give up or give in and to embrace the pain because it is all worth it.  Join me as I talk with Nicole Homan and look over the journey that God has led her on. How she said yes to one moment and suddenly had ten children. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show.  [02:01] - I ask Nicole to introduce herself. [09:00] - What advice, what encouragement would you have for someone who, they want to step out but fear is holding them back? [11:11] - Were there moments when you were thinking, “what did we say yes too”? [13:13] - I share what I heard from a mom who is overwhelmed by the mess and the noise, what do you do in those moments? [15:08] - You must be doing something to cultivate that stillness in your heart, I don't think that just happens. [16:48] - How do you actually get your kids to allow you to have this quiet time? [19:23] - Nicole shares the story of how they went from 10 children to 14. [22:49] - Did you know, “okay 14 is the number, we're done”? [23:10] - We talk a little bit more about the failed adoption. Today's topic was recommended by a listener and I am excited to have this discussion. We go over a few things that we wish we knew from our oldest child to how we parent with our youngest child. We learn, adapt and not everything is the same with each kid.  We dive into perspective and it is very important going into parenting. How our level of confidence was misleading and that the relationship that we built is what is going to bind us together with our children. We have learned that parenting with the end in mind, instead of the here and now and stressing over getting it perfect. I give an update on what is saving my life, and it just happens to be a special moment with one of the kiddos. I also give an update on the book  I am currently listening to. Jesse and I discuss how different it must be to live in certain situations and how to function during stressful times. Let us know what you wish you had known before having kids and send us an email and we love hearing your thoughts. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show.  [01:10] - I share what has been saving my life for the last few weeks. [03:48] - I am also listening to a really fantasnating book right now. [05:47] - It is a quiet unfolding of the story that is really important. [08:53] - Jesse reads the temporary rules in 1941 for the Richmond Golf Club in London England. [11:12] - Sometimes the best thing is, instead of living in fear, put your head down and do the next best thing. [11:55] - What we wish we knew, before having kids; this was a request that came in from someone and she asked if we would talk about it. [13:00] - The biggest thing for me, I wish that I knew ahead of time that I couldn't control them. [14:58] - As parents we would take the responsibility of those bad decisions, when that is not our responsibility to bear as well. [16:04] - I think there's a fine line balance between recognizing our responsibility but also God's sovereignty. [16:30] - Loving them is more important than lecturing them. [18:06] - The relationship is so much more important than the end result. [20:55] - I wish I had known how much fun they would be and to just enjoy them. I asked instagram if they had any suggestions for podcast topics and by popular demand, this subject kept coming up. So here we are today to talk about how to make time for romance when you have kids. Jesse and I both share what we feel works best for us, how knowing our love languages helps in certain situations. But we are also willing to meet each other in a certain space when one of us needs it. This could be helping with kids or giving me the 5 minutes I need. It's about being creative, working with what you have, but also being open to communication, with ourselves and with each other. Jesse and I are on the same page this week with what has been saving our lives, it involves exercise. And we have updates on what we are currently reading. I share an experience I had and the outcome by using the tools I learned from a previous book we discussed on the podcast. It has been a year that we have had Baby D in our home and we have just been reflecting a lot on how we started out to where we are now. To be able to see the faithfulness and the goodness of God; and what we have learned from this experience. We live with joy and enjoy the moment but to also slow down and stay within the moment and small milestones.  This is a gift and has changed us in so many profound ways. It has not only changed our perspectives and our kids perspective, it's totally changed our kids friends perspective too. We have learned so much from this experience. Jesse and I also share how he saved my life and what has been saving. We have a little update on what has been happening in our kids' lives at school. [21:08] - This is the weight of responsibility that we don't take this lightly but it felt so overwhelming. I had some feedback and questions from 5 Things I do Every Morning that we published earlier this year and so I wanted to go answer and share exactly what our morning routine looks like in our current season. It really helps that Jesse and I both work together to make sure we have the time that we need to get our days started. But our best advice is to tailor your needs to your season and to just be creative about it. You may not be able to do everything in the first hour and that's okay. Take the time to figure out, reach out to people in your community and set the path that works for you. Also on today's episode, I share a book update on a book I recently finished that I had mentioned in another podcast episode. Jesse and I both share what has been saving our lives recently. [24:38] - Your nights can set your days up for so much success. A successful day begins the night  before. [25:20] - Jesse shares explains why I consider sleeping in until about 6:45 in the morning. There are many sides to foster care that people don't see or understand. Today with Jamie Finn we talk about the good and bad sides of foster care. We talk about viewing foster care from a gospel centered perspective. If your heart is calling out to be involved and help with your community, Jamie provides ways for you to be able to support. She also shares that if you don't feel like foster care is the right place for you, there are other ways of helping out through your church and community. Either route you want to explore, one of the best ways to determine if it is for you and your  family is intentional proximity. Start with your church, look at organizations in your community. A little support can go a long way. Jamie explains that you have to get out of the savior mindset and understand that these kids do have families and with their current situation they just need some help. Also on today's episode I share my latest travel story, Jesse and I also give you a reading update. I read a letter from one of our listeners, and I touched a little bit from my book, Love-Centered Parenting, about my flare prayer technique.  Besides these three questions, please remember to take the time to take a breath. [17:52] - Instead, stepping back and asking for God's help [19:13] - First question is to simply ask, “what is wrong?”. [21:23] - And then asking, “how can I help you?”. [22:39] - Finally, just saying, “what can you do about it?”. [23:53] - Instead of you suggesting things, ask questions and kind of lead them to some solutions, so that they are learning. It's so easy to over-complicate life. To completely miss simple solutions because they are, well, just too easy! Now, hear me out: I'm not saying you should be lazy or lax. What I am saying is that there's no point in wasting a lot of time and energy on making life more complicated or difficult than it needs to be. The more we pare down to what matters most, the more time we have to intentionally invest in what's important. Two questions I ask regularly as I come up against a problem or just go throughout normal life are: 1. How can I make this easier? 2. What can I do to simplify this? I firmly believe that simplicity is a superpower. And while I have always focused on keeping things simple, the last three years of two pregnancies and fostering two other babies has caused me to simplify even more! In this episode, I share 8 ways I simplify my life. Jesse and I also talk about a favorite TV show, a documentary we're watching, what we're reading, and what's saving our lives. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [01:45] - It has been an eventful week, with a pretty significant amount of snow. [02:45] - One of our favorite shows on TV has returned. [03:43] - We talk about a documentary that Jesse and I are watching. [06:54] - What has been saving my life for some time now. [08:00] - Jesse jokes about what is saving his life. [09:21] - I finished an audible book that was recommended by a listener. [13:15] - Let's talk about simplifying our lives instead of over-complicating them. Here are 8 ways I do this... [13:24] - I wear the same outfit over and over again. [14:09] - My make-up and hair routine. [16:00] - We keep meals really simple. [16:42] - We don't have many toys. [17:55] - We have the older kids be in charge of many aspects of their lives. [20:33] - We have a donation bin. [21:18] - I avoid work related meetings and phone calls. [22:37] - Systems for organizing emails and piles of paper. We've been keeping a secret for 11 weeks — I'm 15 weeks pregnant!!!! Yes, this news was possibly even more shocking than when we found out I was pregnant with Kierstyn after 10 years of infertility! In fact, we were so surprised, we waited a full week to tell our kids — which, if you know Jesse and me well, you know we can't keep secrets from our kids! We found out I was pregnant right after saying yes to adopting Baby D... who we thought was going to our family's caboose! But God definitely had different plans and we just had laugh at the timing of it all! We also have to marvel at how we went from grieving the loss of being told that we'd never be able to have more kids a few years ago (not even through IVF) to now prepping for having 3 littles with the oldest being barely 2 years old! Oh and at 40 and 41 years old! Only God! We are all thrilled and excited with this very unexpected news and how God is writing a story here that is so different than what we could have ever dreamed or imagined! I'm slowly coming back to life after 9 weeks or so of the usual morning-noon-and-night sickness and extreme exhaustion. If you've noticed I've not been sharing as much here and not sharing food/cooking/recipes or videos with my face much on Instagram stories, now you know why! For all the details on how we found out, how we told our kids, and more, be sure to listen to today's podcast episode. Want more details on my pregnancy? I'm sharing more and answering your questions over on Instagram today. Note: I know that this news will be really hard for some of you to hear. You'd give anything to be pregnant and hearing another pregnancy announcement feels like a gut-punch. I want you to know you've been heavy on my heart and I've been praying specifically for you. I also want you to know that you have my full permission to unfollow or mute my social media accounts for awhile — whatever you need to do, please do it and know I will fully support you in that. Welcome back! We unplugged for a few weeks; visiting family and friends in Kansas for Thanksgiving but we are excited for today's episode. We share details about our Thanksgiving and the magic pull of the hotel breakfast has on our daughter. It was a great time to travel and be with family, it was good food and good weather for Kansas at the end of November.  We also have exciting news about Baby D and how amazing he is responding to all the glorious changes that have been happening in his life. We can't express how happy we are with his progress. Jesse and I also update you on our reading, what is saving our lives, the difference between self care vs self comfort and a visit from a squirrel. One of our family traditions is our December bucket list, where at the end of November we ask the kids what activities they want to do. It is never what you think they want and it changes every year. But we do this so that we are creating fun memories as a family and being intentional, without adding additional holiday stress. We share this with you, with the hope that you try it out or make your own traditions. We would love to hear from you if you have done the bucket list, what is on it, or something similar.  In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show.  [03:24] - We also have a big Baby D update. And that is he got completely cleared at his post-op appointment. [08:00] - I forgot to tell y'all what we're going to talk about today, and that was our Christmas Bucket List. [08:13] - Jesse I believe that you might have a book update for us, do you? [09:53] - Well I finished a book and it actually wasn't an audio book, whad'ya know. It was a pre-released copy. [11:51] - What would be selfcare for men? [12:25] - Jesse shares his definition of self care. [14:39] - I was almost thinking, like maybe there's self care, self comfort, and almost like self coping. [15:38] - Okay so let's talk about what is saving our life. Jesse, you got a new gadget recently. [19:39] - And what's saving my life this week is kind of silly but I handed off the advent calendar duties to Silas. [21:49] - Okay, so our Christmas Bucket List [23:28] - We started asking the kids at the end of the november, what are 1 to 2 activities you'd really like to do in December.  [26:09] - It changes every year and so here's what's on our list. In last week's episode we kind of alluded to today's topic a little bit when we were talking about marriage, and learning to communicate better. How sometimes you have pre-decided a lie about yourself and that is how you will view it, this negative narrative. So today we want to talk about replacing the lies with truth and how “only Jesus gets to tell you who you are”. This quote came from a book I was reading by Charles Martin. We break down that by believing lies, it can impact your whole life with negative consequences and learning to know that you don't have to live that narrative. When you are a child of God, you are enough. Not based on your self worth but based on your faith. You must define what is enough for you and know that you are enough when you accept Jesus Christ.  But before we get into the topic of today, we give you an update on Baby D. We share what happens and that out of all the outcomes we thought we would receive from his survey the one we didn't think to count on was Baby D's hearing. Jesse and I also share with you what has been saving our lives this week. And what a great idea they are and that maybe you might pay it forward with this same option to help others who may need a helping hand. I also talk about the book I just finished by Charles Martin. It was book two in a series and I discuss how the topic of the story is really difficult but Martin has a way of giving it the dues and respect it deserves.  We leave you with words of encouragement to know that you can gain confidence when you step out to what God is calling you towards and his faithfulness.    In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. We have lots to share with you today. [01:23] - Today we want to talk about replacing the lies with truth and how only Jesus gets to tell you who you are. [01:29] - But before we get into that. Jesse, it was a big week for Baby D. [03:57] - ABR stands for Auditory Brainstem Response. Okay, so I've seen them do this before. Because when Champ was in the nicu they actually came in and did this to him. [06:43] - Okay. But we had kind of prepared ourselves that he was going to have severe hearing loss for all his life. [09:04] - For the first time in his life, he is able to hear things. Which I, I think is the case and just recognizing he didn't know our voices, he doesn't know his name. [11:28] - I mentioned that I'd just finished reading a book by Charles Martin. I should say listening to a book by Charles Martin. It was on Hoopla and it was called The Letter Keeper. It was part 2 in a series. [12:56] - What's saving my life this week is Aldi's grocery delivery. [14:20] - Jesse, you bought something recently that has been saving our life. [17:00] - I thought it was a brilliant idea because it also encourages them to bring their phones down there and charge their phones there at night. And so, I think like you can make it like a family charging station if you want to have, where, no phones in the room at night. [17:39] - Alright so let's talk about this, lies versus truth and how this can impact your life. [18:44] - Jesse, are there lies that you have believed, that you have seen how it's just had such a negative impact on your life. [21:06] - But in Christ, we can do all things. And so we're enough for what God has called us too. [23:41] - You know I think it's important to learn from, if there's criticism, constructive criticism. All that we want to learn from that but if we let that be who we are. If we let that be where our worth and value is, it's never going to be enough. [25:42] - We can let the words of other people or what we tell ourselves in our head, like you talked about Jesse, that be the narrative that we basically live under. And it becomes our label that we lead with and live out of. [27:59] - I don't know what you have believed for so long, that you're like “that's not a lie that's actually true”. Are you fighting in your relationship? Or even arguing all the time? In today's episode Jesse and I share some of the tips and tricks we have developed over our 19 years of marriage. These  pointers have allowed us to bring our fights and arguments to a minimum. There are always going to be struggles in a relationship and you are going to have to learn how both of you see and process the world differently. We acknowledge and understand that we are not always going to see everything eye to eye but it's how we approach the situation that can turn the tide. It's about not putting your significant other on the defensive but explaining your perspective of the current circumstances. Jesse and I can laugh about how different we are and appreciate those differences and what both of our differences can bring to the relationship. We have learned to prioritize time for us. We understand that each season is always going to be different and maybe even a little bit difficult for our family as a whole but we know that we have to actually make the effort to carve out time just for us. It is very critical to make sure you maintain your relationship with just the two of you, and to not forget what drew you together in the first place. We also have some updates on the family, what we are reading and what's been saving our lives recently. Baby D has a surgery scheduled soon and we talk about our hopes and prayers of the outcome.Jesse shares what is saving his life this week, a new program that will help him focus and set goals. I also share something that has changed my life, teeth whitening strips. Jesse and I also talk about our current reading status and how I feel so much better being in the mindset to actually be finishing a book.   In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. Jesse, today's topic is one that we haven't tackled before on the podcast. Which is actually surprising because I feel like it's something that we have a lot of experience with. [02:45] - But before we get to that we're going to start the show like we always do with giving you a little personal family update. This is a big week for us. [05:28] - We are really hopeful that the survey is going to go well. [07:48] - From many mothers who have children with down syndrome, I have heard it's actually a very common thing with down syndrome. Down syndrome and anesthesia just do not play well. [09:06] - Jesse, what's saving your life this week? [11:50] - It's great to set goals, that I think that this will push you a little bit but it's not pushing you too hard. [13:32] - There are seasons for really big audacious goals. And there are seasons for just, well those little nudge goals. So figuring out which season you are in and what's going to be best for you. [14:57] - I had just noticed that my teeth were not looking white. In fact, I had someone on the podcast and we'd taken a picture next to one another and the first thing that I noticed in the picture was, her teeth look so white and mine look so yellow. [17:21] - Do you have any books that you've been reading Jesse? [19:44] - Alright, let's talk about how we've stopped arguing, I should say, very often.  [21:50] - I think it's our change in perspective of God and His love for us. Cause I think there was some of, going into marriage, almost expecting from each other - only God can give. [23:55] - I think if you don't believe that you are fully loved by God. Then I think you're going to have a hard time believing that you are fully loved by others. [25:28] - If you've pre decided what your spouse, what your kids, what your co-workers, what your community, everyone in your life, your friends, what they think about you. Then you're going to be really hard to love. It's going to be really hard to give and receive love. [26:24] - We come from very different perspectives and we process the world very differently. [27:47] - Really it's, it's understanding how both of you operate and owning it. And understanding and working with that, with each other. [30:57] - Then we can have a conversation, where is that coming from? And it helps us both learn and grow and get better. And to communicate. [32:23] - I think another thing that's been really, really helpful for us, is just prioritizing romance and fun. [35:14] - Don't forget what drew you together in the first place.    Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine   Books Finish by John AcuffA Surrendered Yes: 52 Devotions to Let Go and Live Free by Rebekah LyonsImagination Station, Series   DefinitationsCleft Palate, Kids Health G-tube (gastrostomy tube), Kids Health   Programs/Events 75 Hard SugarWOD, fitness app   Social Media Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter Crystal Paine on Goodreads   Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group crystal@moneysavingmom.com   Special Mentions Lumineux, Oral Essentials

On today's episode of The Crystal Paine Show, Rebekah and I talk about what it was like for her to have a child diagnosed with Down syndrome, what living a surrendered life looks like, and how God doesn't call you to anything that He won't also give you the strength for. Rebekah and her family have been a huge inspiration to our family as we have stepped out in faith and said yes to adopting Baby D. Watching their family and the journey they have been on and how they have trusted the Lord and lived in surrender to His calling has been such an encouragement to us. If you are struggling to say yes and step out in faith, Rebekah's raw honesty on this episode will infuse you with courage. Don't miss it! In This Episode [00:37] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show today we are honored to have a repeat guest, Rebekah Lyons. [03:32] - The great joy in life is to lose your life so that you can find it again. [04:19] - I ask Rebekah what it was like to receive the diagnosis that her firstborn had Down syndrome. [09:44] - "If you could go back to your 26-year-old self when you were walking through this, knowing what you know now, what would you say to yourself?" [12:47] - Rebekah talks directly to the woman who's listening who wants to have that courage but is scared. [15:24] - If you are feeling a nudge or a whisper or something that kind of continues to surface, don't close your hands to it. [17:34] - We talk about what it was like to say yes to adopting Joy. [19:20] - Pay attention to your tears. [23:49] - We segue into talking about answering those people saying "How do you do it?" [28:28] - I ask Rebekah to close by sharing what "letting go and living free" looks like in her life right now.  [31:50] - It's not living in tomorrow, it's not living in yesterday. It's living today. Surprise! If you follow me on Instagram, or Facebook, or Money Saving Mom - you already got the inside scoop. We already announced the big news, but on the podcast, we get to tell the story behind the news. On today's episode we are sharing what is saving our lives, what books we are reading, and the story behind our big news. I always feel like we have had a few full weeks, especially when we have guests on the show. I did another Fresh Ground of Faith event. I went to Illinois with Jennifer Rothchild. Jesse kept multiple children alive but he didn't get very much sleep in the process. We may decide that we are going to hold off on doing this type of thing in the near future because it was disrupt for the kids' habits and routines. Plus Baby D has a new surgery coming up but we are going to have Jesse stay overnight with him and I will come back home. We get a lot of books in the mail, probably because of our podcast, that they want us to read and talk about it. But this book Friendship, It's Complicated: Avoid the Drama, Create Authentic Connection, and Fulfil Your Purpose Together by Andi Andrew caught my eye. I am liking the book so far and working on some areas of my life that I have been making progress in the last few years. But I have only just begun and I may not agree with everything that is still to come. While Jesse is still listening to the Pike Logan Series by Brad Taylor.. Jesse makes reference to a book that we read a long time ago about layering habits and applying reading to this lesson. If you think you don't have habits or time to read a book, maybe try listening to a book as you are doing some of your other habits/routines. We are working towards adopting Baby D.So some months back, we were preparing our hearts to say goodbye to him. And the family that was going to adopt him, was everything we could have hoped for in a family that would be perfect. But they started having doubts and we could see God's hand in this change. The transition for him and for our family was just a lot of mixed emotions. But we know this is the right decision and we will keep you posted. It may be about 6 months but this is foster care and anything can happen.    In This Episode [00:37] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show today we are sharing some pretty big news. [01:21] - So if you haven't guessed, Jesse you want to share our big news. [02:05] - Jesse, you had an eventful 24 hours. [04:27] - Well I have a book that I've been reading. It's called Friendship, It's Complicated: Avoid the Drama, Create Authentic Connection, and Fulfil Your Purpose Together. It's by Andi Andrew. [06:36] - She (Andi) talks about your relationship with your mom and how that can affect your relationship with other women. And it's made me think a lot of how I'm interacting with our girls.  [07:16] - I (Jesse) am continuing on listening to the audiobook series from Brad Taylor. [08:39] - Look for those little pockets of time and check out Libby and Hoopla. [10:53] - I have no segway for this. [11:01] - What's saving our life this week and that's Yum Earth Suckers. [12:59] - We want to share this story, unexpected story, of us pursuing adoption. Obviously it is foster care and things can always change.  [14:22] - I felt us falling so in love with him and yet I saw it as such an honor to get to serve as the in-between. [16:59] - Adoption wasn't on the table for us. [19:03] - Whereas down syndrome, there are some many question marks and some many unknowns. [20:10] - We had been preparing our hearts for goodbye and what the next step, the next chapter of our foster care journey was going to be. And so then, it was this mental and emotional whiplash. [22:12] - I sat down with her (Katie Reid) and I asked her because she is an adoptive mama, and I asked her a few questions but I remember that she looked at me and she said, “does he feel like your son?”.   Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine   Books Friendship, It's Complicated: Avoid the Drama, Create Authentic Connection, and Fulfil Your Purpose Together by Andi Andrew Pike Logan Series by Brad Taylor   Definitations Down Syndrome, National Down Syndrome society   Programs/Events Libby/Overdrive Hoopla Fresh Ground of Faith   Social Media Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter Crystal Paine on Goodreads   Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group crystal@moneysavingmom.com   Special Mentions Jennifer Rothchild Yum Earth Suckers Katie Reid, episode 142

Are you looking for your moment? I am really honored that we have in the studio today, Max Lucado. I shared with him early on that I only have people on the show, whose work, or life, or what they share has deeply impacted my life. Max Lucado is from Texas. He is an author, father, grandfather, husband, and minister. Max tells us about how he got started in the church and Max acknowledges his struggles and what he overcame when he pivoted towards the Lord and reflecting on what he cherishes now are some of things that he overlooked when he was younger. We talk about one of the only books I have ever read by him, a children's book about Punchinello called You Are Special and besides his newest book release, You Were Made For This Moment: Courage for Today and Hope for Tomorrow. This story comes from the book of Esther from the bible and talks about experiences of overcoming challenges. Max also gives us examples of different Mordecai moments. I share with Max how Punchinello has deeply, deeply impacted my life, even for a little children's book. The concept that our Maker, what he says and what he thinks about us is what sticks. It is a very powerful message. It goes to show us how the story impacts us in a deep way. Max shares the story behind the creation of Punchinello and we dive into how something that can come from an assignment instead of inspiration and shows that God blesses those who keep their promise. We talk about showing up and how God uses that moment of showing up, even when you don't recognize it. That you never know when your moment will make a difference and if you are looking for encouragement, this is a great book to check out.   In This Episode [00:37] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show today we have in the studio is Max Lucado. [01:01] - I am probably one of the few people in all the world that has only read one and the one that I read was a children's book.   [04:54] - Everyone listening, how God can use those things that he is calling you to do even though it might feel like, “I got to get this done because this is an assignment” but you never know how he is going to use that for His Glory. [05:10] - I'd love for you, for the few people who maybe don't know the whole host of things you have done and who you are, just introduce yourself to us. [07:15] - You met the Lord and then you kind of immediately signed up to be a missionary, talk to us about that. [09:24] - And then when you were in Brazil, is when you started writing, how did that come to be? [12:19] - How can a good God be allowing all the things that have happened in the world in the last 18 months, talk to us about that. [15:14] - What is it about the Esther story that you see that is going to infuse people with hope? [16:13] - It reveals to us truly the, also kinda the quiet providence of God, because it's famous for being one of the two books in the bible where the name of God does not appear and yet the fingerprints of God are on every paragraph. [19:03] - The story is not really positive about them in the beginning because they don't, they have blended into the culture. They are so Persian in identity, in language, in dress, in style, and culture that he can work for the king and she can sleep with the king and they never - no one knows they are Jewish. [22:20] - What does that look like practically, for people who they're saying “I want to do something with my life, I feel like there's more than just what I am living for right now but I don't even know how to take the first step. [26:07] - But they are scared; it's hard; what encouragement would you have for someone who is feeling that way?   Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine Max Lucado   Books You Are Special (Punchinello) by Max LucadoYou Were Made For This Moment: Courage for Today and Hope for Tomorrow by Max Lucado Social Media Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter Crystal Paine on Goodreads   Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group crystal@moneysavingmom.com   Max Lucado on Facebook Max Lucado on Instagram Max Lucado on Twitter   The Max Lucado Encouraging Word Podcast

Ready to catch up on what has been happening in our lives? We have so much to share with you and a lot has happened in the last few weeks. We'd had so many different guests, meaning Jesse and I have not had a chance to have a conversation so we have a lot of updates. Our biggest update is the toilet situation. Jesse and I recap what happened with our toilet and now we have a new toilet. We banter about our ages a few times. I had my first in-person speaker event after two years of being online, which had some obstacles but God was so faithful and lots of people were praying for me and it was really amazing. Did you know that potato chips help your throat when you lose your voice? Me either. I had an accidental exposure to an allergy but everything turned out well. Jesse and I talk about what we have been reading, or in my case not reading.  I don't know what you call: book-whiplash or something because I keep starting books and then not finishing them. We also talk about a few different kinds of apps to use for listening to books.  Our main topic for today is, love languages. Jesse and I picked up a Date Night in a Box to reconnect and have some quality time together. This particle box was about love languages. They provide a quiz for each person to fill out and it is really great for conversations in and about your relationship.   It can be a refresher for you and your partner and what made it really great, is that it provided practical ways to apply each love language. You always need to keep the spark going in your relationship, it is never ending and ever evolving but you must put the work into, otherwise you may lose that connection.   In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show. [03:26] - We have discovered the price tag of toilets. [04:41] - I got a really special birthday gift. [05:37] - I went to Chino, California and spoke at the Fresh Ground of Faith event. [08:01] - It was my first night in over 18 months that I didn't have a baby in the room. [08:40] - I am speaking at the same type of conference, Fresh Ground of Faith with Jennifer Rothchild   [09:10] - Also, I got to do axe throwing. Which I had never done before. [10:26] - Jesse do you have any updates for us, on anything, any books you are reading or listening too? [13:30] - I do have something that is saving my life. [14:27] - Okay so we are going to talk about love languages today. [16:10] - This was a hard quiz because it wasn't multiple choice, it was two options. And you chose which one you related to more. [17:26] - ‘Cause I think it's so easy for us to assume that other people feel loved in the same way we do. [18:41] - So your (Jesse) love language, is the ones you relate to the most are physical touch and gifts. [19:18] - For me it is acts of service and words of affirmation. [21:59] - I think that for sure what has changed is your (Jesse) understanding of how to show me love. [23:18] - I think it is really really important, if you are in a relationship; a close relationship with someone that you understand their love language. [24:41] - Well and each of those areas is a way of connection and what you want to make sure is that you have a really good connection established. [25:18] - It's like lighting a match, it's just like igniting a little spark.   Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine   Books Brad Taylor, author Brad Thor, author Programs/Events Fresh Ground of Faith Libby, free public library app   Social Media Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter Crystal Paine on Goodreads   Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group crystal@moneysavingmom.com   Special Mentions Jennifer Rothchild Jack Carr, podcast Scribed, reading app Dove: Midnight Fudge Cookie 5 Love Languages Quiz Date Night in a Box

Should you be napping? I resonate so deeply with today's topic and I brought my friend Katie Reid, who brings so much wisdom, experience, and encouragement to today's discussion. Katie wrote the book, Made Like Martha: Good News for the Woman Who Gets Things Done, and we just want to speak to you if you are feeling overwhelmed with life, if you struggle with worry and like me, are a problem solver and a fixer and just struggle. There is nothing wrong with being a do-er but if you are looking on how to find the balance of being and going - resting in the lord but also being productive, today's topic is for you. Katie Reid is an author, speaker, podcast host, and worship leader. Katie has been married for 20 years and has 5 kids. The girls are the bookends with the oldest being 17 and the youngest is a kindergarten and three boys in the middle. Katie is not bored Katie shares some insight on what worship and worrying look like to her. Worry was a default emotion for so long, for Katie. There are so many things to worry about, especially being moms but Katie explains that worry makes us promises and makes us feel like we are feeling productive. When really, the more we feed it the more it grows. We look at the differences between Mary and Martha and share some stories from the bible. Both Kaite and I are do-ers, we like to have plans and have things to do. We are planners,  problem solvers, and we like lists and checking things off the list. But as people with all these plans and things to do, this could be something that leads to a path of worrying. We discuss that sometimes as women, we struggle with rest. Katie tells us that we believe that if we rest everything will fall apart but we forgot that resting is a gift.   In This Episode [00:37] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show and for today's topic I brought my friend Katie Reid. [01:33] - Katie I am so glad that you are here and for people who might not know who you are, if you'd just take a few minutes to introduce yourself. [03:22] - Where you're driven to the point of ,that it can be an unhealthy thing and I really feel like that's probably where this book, Made Like Martha, came out of. And some people may be saying, hold up, who is Martha. So let's start there. [05:05] - Katie quotes Luke chapter 10 verse 41 and 42. [05:12] - Katie did not like this passage because she wanted the story to go differently. [07:37] - I read a quote from Made Like Martha. [07:51] - Talk to us about what it looks like to worship instead of worry, and why worship suffocates worry. [10:55] - Katie shares the phrase that God gave her, “We can starve worry, when we feast on worship”. [12:49] - Do you feel like there are a lot of times when we're worrying and we just don't even realize that we are worrying? [15:26] - For someone who is listening, who, the concept of worship they don't even know where to start with that or what that even means or what that can practically look like. Can you just flush that out a little bit more? [17:33] - How have you let go of that burden and that weight of feeling like it's all on you, to carry everyone else and to make sure it all works out? [20:05] - We learn that “degalation is not weak, it's actually wise” from Katie. [22:04] - How do I know what to say yes to because I feel like I have way too many things that I need to say yes to? [26:36] -  Oftentimes when I will feel the most anxiety or that I'm just not being able to focus and be calm, it's just that I'm tired. [28:53] - Katie believes that generosity is “just God winks,”. [30:15] - In Katie's mindseye she sees Jesus sitting on a la-z-boy reading a newspaper and thinking “great he's not helping me”. [32:31] - Of any of this that Katie has shared, resonates with you. What are you doing to improve your life? We are going to dive into what it looks like to replace the gospel of self improvement with the gospel of life transforming grace and our special guest is Ruth Chou Simons. Everything that Ruth does has this aroma of beauty which is the opposite of me. Where I am a cut and dry minimalist. Ruth Chou Simons is a best selling author and founder of GraceLaced. She has been married to her husband Troy for 23 years and they have been involved in the local ministry most of their lives. Ruth and Troy have 6 sons, yes you heard correctly. Ruth is in multiple stages of parenting with her oldest being 19 and her youngest is 8. We talk about dating ourselves by being bloggers and on the internet since the beginning, and how Ruth's blogging has evolved into more of a community effort and being more active on Instagram. GraceLaced started out as the name of Ruth's blog and is now the name of her current business. We talk about why Grace matters and why it is the cornerstone of Ruth's ministry, her life, her work, and why she talks about it all the time. Ruth and I discuss how she is currently walking out the message of her new book, When Strivings Cease: Replacing the Gospel of Self-Improvement with the Gospel of Life-Transforming Grace, as she's launching it. Ruth wants the readers to marinate with the message and to experience the journey with art. Ruth shares some personal stories and that she wants to reach women with beauty and truth. And to show that women out there are not alone when feeling vulnerable. You are not alone, and you are not meant to do this alone. You have to do the soul work to improve yourself and stop striving and start looking to Jesus and relying upon him and finding fullness of life in him.   In This Episode [00:42] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show and for today's topic I have none other than Ruth Chou Simons. [01:23] - I just love what you bring to the world with the gifts that God has given you. [01:48] - For the few people who maybe aren't totally familiar with you, I would love for you to introduce yourself to our audience. [03:21] - We are kinda the grandma bloggers, we have been on the internet for a long time.  [06:03] - And now When Strivings Cease, is your new book and this is your first trade book. [06:19] - The artwork that Ruth does isn't meant to just be like, it's not like clipart on the corners, it is that the art is symbolic of what you are reading. [06:51] -There are some drawings in there because Ruth wants us to linger long on each page. [07:50] - The effort of writing a book, that's a lot but to then have this whole artistic journey. I have so much respect for you. [08:20] - Ruth states we were created to be image bearers.  [08:46] - What kind of inspired you to make this pivot from doing these beautiful full colorful devotionals to then a trade book? [10:51] - I read quotes from the beginning of When Strivings Cease. [11:39] - I feel like the “worn out, fearful, and anxiously striving” those are words that describe so many women. And I know I have been there, so many times. [12:42] - Ruth tells us that we are not alone, yes it is a red flag but it's a red flag for all of us. We are wired to carry everything on our own. We're wired to think that we're the saviors of our own lives. [13:21] - The title of your book is When Strivings Cease and then the subtitle is Replacing the Gospel of Self-Improvement with the Gospel of Life-Transforming Grace. I would love for you to kinda unpack that for us a little bit, of what is the gospel of self-improvement? [14:24] - So the gospel of life-transforming grace, so tell us what that is? [15:48] - So how do we get from, the woman that's listening and she's saying “Oh, I'm just, I'm tired and I've been just trying so hard”. [18:43] - I read another statement from When Strivings Cease. [19:55] - Ruth shares a story that is her understanding of God. [22:14] - Ruth hopes the book helps you have like, a quick way to process this but I hope it drives you to the truth that's been left for us in the word of God that tells us what God really desires, from you and for you and how he's provided for that in Christ. [25:20] - How are you practically walking this out in your life? [28:41] - Would you be willing to kinda get vulnerable and talk about how you're processing this in your own life? [31:50] - Ruth is saying, “hey friend, I'm still struggling too”. [33:11] - I think so many women can relate to that feeling of, “you know, God, I don't have what it takes” -  I feel like that's multiple times a day for me, and, and yet God is so faithful when we look to him.   Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine   BooksGraceLaced: Discovering Timeless Truths Through Seasons of the Heart by Ruth Chou Simons Beyonding and Beloving: The Art of Everyday Worship by Ruth Chou Simons Garden of Truth by Ruth Chou Simons Field of Joy by Ruth Chou Simons Foundations: 12 Biblical Truths to Shape a Family by Ruth Chou Simons & Troy Simonns When Strivings Cease: Replacing the Gospel of Self-Improvement with the Gospel of Life-Transforming Grace by Ruth Chou Simons   Social Media Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter Crystal Paine on Goodreads   Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group crystal@moneysavingmom.com   Ruth Chou Simons GraceLaced Co.   Ruth Chou Simmons in Facebook Ruth Chou Simmons on Instagram GraceLaced on Instagram

Do you feel like your prayers are being ignored? This is something that has been on our hearts to share and a story that God is currently writing for us. Of believing that for over a decade, our prayers were not being answered. But in hindsight, God was answering just not in the way we thought. We are saying that our prayers weren't being answered because it was not a “yes”. But there are lots of other answers besides yes. God taught us so many lessons on faith, and resting in him, and contentment, and just opening our hearts to stepping into things that were scary and hard and took us way outside our comfort zone. Want a glimpse into what has been happening in our lives recently? Jesse had a birthday. We talk about our difference in age and how we celebrated Jesse's birthday. We discuss some of the books we have recently been reading and what we look for in good books. Jesse talks about the books he has finished, one non-fiction and one fiction. I talk about a fiction author that was recommended to me and the last book I just finished. Word to the wise, don't do things one-handed if you are trying to fix a toilet. We chat about everyday items that are positively affecting our family. The flex seal glue that Jesse had to purchase to fix the toilet mishap. How the invention of the two way zipper onesie is helping keep baby D's g-tube safe. This is real life. I reflect on our last ten years and during all that time, it felt like our prayers weren't being answered and asking God why. I close out the podcast, giving words to encourage others who may be struggling, who may not fully recognize that God is answering you, it just might not be with a yes.   In This Episode   [00:37] - Welcome to The Crystal Paine Show. today's topic is When your prayers aren't answered [01:13] - Jesse just talked a little bit, um, can anyone tell a difference in his voice? Does he sound a little bit more mature? A little bit older? [02:44] - I just discovered, in the last month, that teens love cake. [04:10] - Jesse is older, that is the big news to report & also, you also finished more than one book. [06:01] - Tell us about The President's Daughter book. [07:08] - I finished a book by Charles Martin. I have been listening to a lot of his books recently. At the beginning of the year, I asked on my blog, Money Saving Mom.com, for book recommendations especially for fiction. [08:37] - This one that I just finished, it was A Life Intercepted.  [11:00] - Jesse you have something that's saving your life? Actually, our whole families life. [13:09] - Growing up, I was the toilet fixer. [16:36] - Well what is saving my life this week, it has actually been saving my life for a very long time. [19:21] - Alright Jesse, I told you that I have an email that I have been very excited to read to you.  [21:15] -  So let's talk about when your prayers aren't answered. [23:14] - We wanted to have more kids and God wasn't answering that prayer with yes. [24:28] - We can both look back over those ten years of waiting and just really see how God changed our hearts in big ways.  [25:55] - I wrote this on Instagram and I just wanna close with reading this and I just hope that it encourages someone today who needs this reminder.  [28:26] - I wrote this on Instagram that I also just want to read to you, just to encourage you that you never know what God is up to.    Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine   BooksWarrior Diplomat: A Green Beret's Battles from Washington to Afghanistan by Mike Waltz The President's Daughter by James Patterson & Bill Clinton The President is Missing  by James Patterson & Bill Clinton A Life Intercepted: A Novel by Charles Martin   Definitions Allegory (allegorical), Literary Terms G-tube (gastrostomy tube), Kids Health Programs/Events Libby, free public library app   Social Media Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter Crystal Paine on Goodreads   Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group crystal@moneysavingmom.com   Special Mentions 52 Book I Plan to Read in 2021, blog post Photo, Instagram Video, Instagram

Are you a fashionista? Do you love or hate clothes? I am thrilled to have Alison Lumbatis in the studio with us today to talk about her new book, The Ultimate Book of Outfit Formulas: A Stylish Solution to What Should I Wear?, and realizing how much of an impact she has had on my life. Especially when it comes to clothes. Imagine how your day and mood will be different, just by getting dressed. No matter how you feel in the morning and no matter if you are leaving your home or staying in, getting dressed is a type of selfcare. This one action has the power to change the outcome of how you feel and how you present yourself. Alison gives us the history on how she stopped getting dressed and she noticed her loss of motivation after working from home after six months. In hindsight, she recognized there were signs of depression by being in her yoga pants rut. One day she asked herself, “what is one tangle thing I can do to make myself feel better today?” Alison tells us the answer was easy, the first step was putting on real clothes. This not only made her feel better but it allowed her to also set an example. Alison explains to us that we only wear 20% of the clothes we have in our closets. She states that cleaning out your closet is an emotional process and that we are holding on to articles of the past. In order to effectively clean it out, we need to take everything out and go through each piece individually, in order to know what to put back in your closet. We ask the tough questions: does the thought of changing out of your yoga pants or throwing out your workout clothes sound difficult? Clothes shouldn't take an emotional toll but allow you to be the best version of yourself. Getting dressed can change your emotions and energy levels, making you more motivated. It is as simple as getting dressed everyday. It doesn't matter what time, whether it be 3pm or 5 pm. The mood boost from getting dressed is so simple, yet the outcome is so powerful. In This Episode [00:39] - Welcome Alison Lumbatis to The Crystal Paine Show [02:14] - I had never really worked hard to put together outfits because I had always kind of told myself I am not a fashionista. [03:35] - Sometimes I feel like people might think clothes aren't that big of a deal but it is a big deal and makes a big difference. [04:10] - I have Alison tell us about herself and explain what she does. [04:33] - My goal is really to empower women to be able to shop on their own and to be able to see their closets in a different light. [05:03] - Number one, I didn't have accountability for getting dressed in the morning anymore [06:51] - Blogging is a great creative outlet. [07:22] - I really just asked my readers and followers at that point, “what can I do for you that is going to make your life easier?” [08:09] - I inadvertently created a capsule wardrobe. [08:50] - No matter your style, you can make it work for you. [10:05] - I love how you just kind of gently encourage people to push outside their comfort zones. [10:58] - I read a favorite section from The Ultimate Book of Outfit Formulas: A Stylish Solution to What Should I Wear? [11:28] - “You don't have to feel like doing something, in order to do it.” [11:48] - What could happen if you did put a little effort into it? [12:04] - I like to say, “get dressed with the day you want to have.” [13:58] -  We take the action and the feeling comes after. [15:33] - For the woman who is feeling, “I don't even know where to start. Like I look at my closet and all there is, is yoga pants and sweatshirts and this feels daunting to me”, is there kind of one small step that you would encourage them to take. [17:40] - When you find that outfit formula, that uniform that works for your life.Take a picture of it. [19:56] -  I'd love for you to just kind of walk through, how do you go through your closet, for someone who feels overwhelmed with all the clothes they have, but yet feel like they don't have anything to wear. [22:22] - I developed this acronym swap, “shop with a purpose”. [23:43] - One of the things I love about your book, The Ultimate Book of Outfit Formulas, is how practical it is and visual. [24:40] - I ask Alison to tell us more about her program and how you can get signed up. [27:45] - I love, also just the spirit of what you're doing, and that it's just encouraging women. [29:03] - Give feedback, but deliver it with love.   Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineAlison Lumbatis BooksThe Ultimate Book of Outfit Formulas: A Stylish Solution to What Should I Wear? Are you struggling? I have been hearing from so many people who are tired, weary and are just done. And these same people just want to shut down. So today we are honored to have Lisa Whittle in the studio to talk about her new book, The Hard Good: Showing Up for God to Work in You When You Want to Shut Down. Lisa Whittle is here to share her wisdom, experiences, and on what God has taught her. Lisa explains how she views the difference between hard and good and why she wants to redefine these terms. It doesn't end with just the hard, it ends with the good. Lisa speaks about so many of her experiences of hard times during this conversation. She talks about her father and how she shares his same habits and responses, which guided her in writing her new book. How faith is a key part of Lisa's life, and she talks about how to work through the hard things but also how to walk through those hard times with God by her side. How she needs more than just believing in herself and in this world, and to hold on to that belief that there is more. We continue with our conversation, acknowledging that we all struggle and not everyone's journey is the same. Even if some struggles may be universal, each person handles it differently. How to see and recognize the signs that are different for everyone and to pay attention. We speak to those out there who are struggling and give guidance, and steps to working through their difficult time, because we come from a place of understanding. That working through the hard is not perfect and it doesn't mean that you cant see the good in the hard. But most importantly that you can come out the other side.   In This Episode [00:39] - Welcome Lisa Whittle to The Crystal Paine Show [01:15] - So many people who don't want to show up. [01:45] - I have Lisa introduce herself for our audience. [02:43] - Tell us where this book came from. [04:15] - I love, kind of, this conflict or tension just in the title of your book.  [05:15] - We don't have to define hard. [08:06] - When you know what you believe and when your firm in your faith, I don't think there should be anything, any conversation we're afraid of [09:27] - How do you know that you're shutting down? [12:20] -  How do we reverse course and not just get stuck in that rut of shutting down? [14:00] - “I am here.” [14:52] -  A lot of us are alive but we are not living. [16:53] - When we are really vulnerable with a friend, our relationship deepens because we've shared our hearts, and I think it is the same in our relationship with the Lord. [18:15] - I loved what you had to say about cheering for someone, when they get what you want. [18:30] - I read a passage from The Hard Good [20:49] - Women are amazing, we, we have the ability to be so for each other. [23:36] - She is not the opponent, jealousy is. [25:48] - I would just love for you to speak to that woman who is in the hard right now, and there is, and it doesn't feel like there's any good. What would you say to her? [28:00] - We need more than just believing in ourselves.   Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine Lisa Whittle BooksThe Hard Good: Showing Up for God to Work in You When You Want to Shut Down by Lisa Whittle   Social Media Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter   Lisa Whittle Facebook Lisa Whittle Instagram Lisa Whitte Twitter   Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group crystal@moneysavingmom.com

The statistics are slow in coming, but according to November 2020 findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between April and October 2020, hospital emergency departments saw an increase in the total number of visits that were from kids for mental health needs. And while that is true and terribly tragic, statistics also show that anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide were already on the rise even before this global pandemic. One report from the ADAA (Anxiety & Depression Association of America) states that 1 in 20 kids struggle with mental health disorders each year. Today we hope to offer you some help. Our guest today is Crystal Paine. She's the founder of MoneySavingMom.com, host of “The Crystal Paine Show” podcast, New York Times bestselling author of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, and author of Money-Making Mom. She's just released a new book, Love-Centered Parenting that is quite a departure from her normal offerings. But she's opening up about a very vulnerable piece in her family's story in order to help change that 1 in 20 statistic.

#064: How to Grow a Wildly Successful Business by Serving Your Audience with Crystal Paine

The Blogger Genius Podcast with Jillian Leslie

My guest this week is Crystal Paine, founder of MoneySavingMom, host of the Crystal Paine Show podcast, and a New York Times bestselling author. Over the past ten years, Crystal has built her blog into a 7-figure business. In this episode, Crystal shares how she grew a wildly successful business by serving her audience, especially using Instagram and Facebook. From Blog to 7-Figure Business When Crystal and her husband got married 16 years ago, they set an audacious goal. They planned to get him through law school completely debt-free. He would then work as an attorney and she would raise their children. Soon after they started this journey, Crystal found out that she was expecting. They were excited about their growing family but Crystal soon had to quit her job due to severe morning sickness. They had been dependent on her income to help while her husband was in law school and now it was gone. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, Crystal used that time in bed to research ways to make money online. Back in 2004, the way to research things online was through Yahoo! Groups. So Crystal did just that. She began asking questions of those people in the groups who were making money online how they were doing it. And then she started trying things like setting up websites and learning about affiliate marketing. In the process of these experiments, Crystal discovered blogging. The advice at the time was to add a blog to your website to increase your SEO for Google search. So she started a blog. Back in 2004, there were no courses or books on how to blog. You had to figure it out as you went along.   Crystal made a lot of mistakes on that first blog but she loved blogging and knew that this was an avenue she wanted to pursue. Soon, she began hearing people talk about making money blogging. And since her blog was still, in her eyes, just a big experiment, and since she was getting fairly decent traffic to that blog, she decided to experiment with monetizing it. Crystal noticed that anytime she blogged about saving money, she got a lot of traffic to those posts. And within a year, the blog she had begun as an experiment, Money Saving Mom, was bringing in a full-time income. Crystal's husband worked as a lawyer for several years but in 2014, he left law to work full-time in the business. Creating Multiple Income Streams Crystal obviously began making money with her blog in the first year of blogging and grew it quickly. She has grown that simple blog into a 7-figure business over the years. Her early income was mostly from affiliates but that has since turned into multiple income streams. If you want to be successful you need to have many income streams. Blogging still accounts for 50-60% of Crystal's income. This is earned through affiliates and sponsored posts. She also has blogging courses, several books, and a paid Mastermind group for bloggers. Encouraging Women Through Social Media When I started following Crystal, one of the things I noticed right away was how she uses social media to connect with her audience. Crystal is passionate about making women feel seen and valued in a world where social media is taking over face-to-face interaction. Even as the owner of a 7-figure business, and with all of the work that it entails, she still tries to answer all of her own DM's, comments, and emails. The amazing thing about her social media skills is that when Crystal first began blogging, there was no social media. Bloggers had their blog posts with a comments section and their email subscribers. That was it as far as connecting with your audience. When Facebook came on the scene, Crystal's husband told her that she needed to start a Facebook page for her blog. At the time, nobody was doing this. She was hesitant but eventually created a business page and it grew her audience on her website over the next four years in a huge way. If you want to be successful as a blogger, you need to constantly be looking for ways to grow and evolve, because the internet is a constantly changing medium. Crystal uses Instagram Live and videos almost daily. She finds it the best way to build relationships and trust with her audience. If you aren't using Instagram Live and Stories, you are failing to use every resource available to reach your audience. Is Facebook Dead as a Traffic Driver? For some time, Facebook was giving Crystal's page so many new pageviews that her page was growing by the thousands per week. The algorithms changed, but Facebook is still a very strong traffic stream for Crystal. A lot of bloggers feel like Facebook has died as far as sending traffic. Not Crystal. Again, she experiments with what she shares, how often she posts and Facebook is still driving traffic to Money Saving Mom every single day. What's working for her right now, at the time of this recording, is recording an Instagram Live, saving it, and then rerunning that video on Facebook as a Live video. She then pins that video to the top of her Facebook page and she gets significantly more views than if she did a Facebook Live. She can also put it on IGTV to get more viewers. One IG Live enables her to reach thousands of viewers with just 1 video. Using Instagram Live for Her Business Crystal does an Instagram Live four or times a week. The length of her Lives depends on the topic she's discussing but as a general rule, they are between 6-15 minutes. *You can only upload a video to IGTV over ten minutes long if you have over 10,000 followers. Remember that most people are going to be watching your video on replay, so don't wait for viewers to pop up before you start. In the first 5 seconds of being live, go ahead and tell the viewers what you're going to be talking about. This is your “hook,” what gets people to stick around to watch. Do not sit there and hem and haw around, waiting for someone to jump on and watch you live. You waste precious time and people will not stick around for even 45 seconds if you don't get started immediately. The “gold” in live video is in the replay so always be thinking about your replay audience when doing live video. Monetizing Instagram Stories Crystal has 2 accounts on Facebook - Money Saving Mom and Your Blogging Mentor. The content she shares on these accounts is completely focused on the topic at hand; saving money and growing a profitable blog. Instagram Stories, on the other hand, is the one place Crystal feels free to post whatever content she wants. She views her Instagram Stories as her personal account and she shares any aspect of her life she feels like sharing. That may be a promotion she's running, personal rants, stories about her husband and children, etc. Crystal makes several Stories every day. She begins to feel like a friend to the viewer, just by sharing her life. She also monetizes them, making thousands of dollars a month from her stories. Crystal made a point here that I thought was huge - “People are following bloggers, not blogs. They're following influencers, not accounts.” It's something we often miss, but people want to build relationships. When you have a relationship with someone -- when you build trust with them -- they will follow you wherever you take them. Every day in her Stories, Crystal is pointing people to something.    She does affiliate sales but she doesn't make it seem like advertising. She is talking about something she loves and the sales tend to follow that. Why Do Instagram Live Videos? Crystal likes to use Instagram Live to dive deeper into a topic than she could using Instagram Stories. One of her favorite things to do in her Lives is answer questions from her audience. Because she has shared so transparently about her struggles with anxiety and insecurity, she frequently shares on those two topics. She also shares tons of money saving tips and her grocery hauls. These are admittedly two completely different topics, but Crystal has still managed to niche it down for herself. Some people will be interested in one topic and some in another, but since they like her and trust her, they continue to follow her. One reason Crystal puts her videos onto IGTV is that Instagram is rewarding users who put content out on IGTV. If you put it up on IGTV, they will show it on the Discover page more often than any other content you create. Sincerely Helping Your Audience While Monetizing Crystal is able to do what she feels led to do: help women along their own journeys. And in the midst of doing that, she is able to support herself and her family. There is no conflict of interest in making money while helping people. Many women feel that monetizing is a dirty word. But you can be sincere about the products you love and make money doing it. Crystal has a piece of advice for women in business- “Make an income so you can make an impact.” She runs a large organization in South Africa because it's something she's very passionate about. Because she is able to bring in an income by helping people, she is able to help others who need it. Building Personal Relationships on Social Media There is a movement these days from having mass social media followings to more personal relationships. This is why the direct message is huge right now. So many people ignore this, thinking they need to chase big numbers. The one-on-one is where you really build your businesses. People are hungry for smaller private groups. You want people to feel that they're a part of something, that they're being seen, and that they're known. Opportunities for Blog Coaching from Crystal A few years ago Crystal began Your Blogging Mentor to help bloggers make a part-time to full-time income from their blogs. She also has a number of beginner courses on how to set up a blog and do it successfully. Everything you need to know about starting a blog can be found at her site Your Blogging University. After receiving countless requests for one-on-one coaching, Crystal tried it and ended up falling in love with smaller group settings where there were just a few hundred people. A few months ago, she launched Your Blogging Mastermind and it will be open to the public in a few weeks. People can submit their work and receive critiques from Crystal and other members. Crystal is also working on a course called Monetizing Your Blog to help beginners know exactly how to start a blog and monetize it. *Hint - It starts with knowing what you're good at and what you're passionate about.   You can find Crystal on Instagram at - https://www.instagram.com/themoneysavingmom/                          https://www.instagram.com/yourbloggingmentor/ Your Blogging Mentor - https://yourbloggingmentor.com/ If you want to use Instagram to grow your business and you're not using Milotree, you're missing out. Is there something that you are relying on to give you joy, fulfillment, or that you just feel like you “have to have” or “can't live without”? I was recently convicted about how much I was relying upon sugar… and it inspired me to try doing a three-week-long no sugar challenge. In this episode, we share why and how I went twenty-one days without sugar as well and what changes I experienced along the way. Don't worry! The purpose of this episode is not to shame you for your sugar intake or even to try to convince you to give it up, but I hope it inspires you in some way to consider if there's something you are relying upon in an unhealthy way.We start the episode by sharing some life updates, what books we have been reading, and an interesting drink I've been drinking recently and then we move into talking about how Natalie Runion inadvertently inspired me to this no-sugar challenge for twenty-one days. I share the reason why I have decided to do this, why I have not been extremely militant about the rules, what has surprised me about this challenge, and how it has made a difference in my life.As I said, though, the purpose of this episode is not to shame you for something like sugar consumption or to try to convince you to do what I have been doing. This is my own personal journey that I am choosing to share, and I don't even have a plan yet for what I am doing after my twenty-one days are up!
