America loves true crime documentaries... especially if they are about serial killers. This week, I chat with true crime aficionado AMY GOODMAN KASS about her latest project, ""RICHARD RAMIREZ: THE NIGHT STALKER TAPES," which she executive produced and directed for PEACOCK, and we discuss why our country is obsessed with the stories of the worst of the worst. We dig into how Amy was able to take never-before-heard audio tapes from the notorious Night Stalker and bring them to life. Listen as Amy also shares her experiences working on other critically acclaimed projects like Showtime's "Love Fraud" and "Hollywood Black" (MGM+) and explains why it's important to explore other genres outside of true crime. And of course, we take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about our times attending the one and only Washington University in St. Louis. Lastly... For years, a man named Richard Scott Smith would win over the hearts of numerous women. He would become their dream man, sweeping them off their feet. There was a catch. This man had a secret agenda with every woman he was with. He would mesmerize her then leave her but not before ruining everything that the woman had worked so hard for. One day, a very scorned woman started a blog about him, which led many of his victims to come together to find him and stop him. With the help of an amazing bounty hunter, a couple of private detectives, and the show, "Love Fraud," Smith was finally exposed as the lying man he was.

When Tracy, a 40-something-year-old Kansas mother of two found Mickey on an online dating site, she thought she had hit the jackpot. He was accomplished, handsome, had his private pilot's license and owned his own real estate company. Within days they were saying I love you and within a month, moving in together. Then, they were talking marriage. It all seemed too good to be true...because it was.Mickey was really Richard Scott Smith, a scammer, cheat, liar and love fraudster who had swindled multiple women out of thousands of dollars, had used multiple aliases and social security numbers. He was also a polygamist, and, at one time, was married to six or more women at the same time. She married a man originally from Sydney, Australia. He took $227,000 from her. He cheated with at least six different women during their 2.5-year relationship. He had a child with one of the women. Then, 10 days after she left him, he married the mother of the child. It was the second time he committed bigamy. Of course, it was only after she left him that she discovered the extent of his betrayal. In the beginning, she thought she'd met the man of her dreams. Anderson found that he had told her two types of lies: Lies mixed with truth. His story would be plausible, but she'd notice inconsistencies. When she questioned the discrepancies, he would either explain them away or accuse her of being paranoid.Totally brazen lies. A normal person, even one prone to exaggeration, would never think of making extraordinary claims that he had made. Anderson left him but it wasn't until she went through the papers he left in her house and called some of the “other women” that she realized everything he told her was a lie. Her therapist suggested that the man might be a sociopath. After researching the topic she found a book, called Without Conscience by Dr. Robert Hare, an international expert on psychopaths (a form of sociopath). His book described he ex husband precisely.Anderson was shocked. She was even more shocked to learn that millions of these human predators live among us. She then realized that she had an important story to tell — and a warning to convey. After launching Lovefraud.com, Anderson wrote eight books. Her latest book is Senior Sociopaths — How to Recognize and Escape Lifelong Abusers. This is the first to document that 14 million Americans over age 50 may be sociopaths, and their behavior is just as bad, or worse, as they age. On this episode I am joined by Donna Andersen. Donna launched Lovefraud.com in 2005 after her disastrous marriage to a sociopath. She has written all of the permanent content on Lovefraud and more than 1,100 blog posts. She has also written multiple books, created videos, conducted multiple online surveys and has presented research to the Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy. Donna also founded Lovefraud Continuing Education, which offers online courses for survivors and mental health professionals on identifying, escaping and recovering from sociopaths. She shares her personal experience about her husband defrauded her as well as many others out of a million dollars. She has been featured on some Investigation Discovery TV episodes. She also shares red flags to be aware of if you are dating someone who might be a sociopath as well as how to recover from these type of toxic relationships. We discuss her newest book: Senior Sociopaths – How to recognize and escape lifelong abusers. It reveals that most sociopaths never stop their manipulative and deceptive behavior. The common wisdom in the mental health field is that sociopaths “burn out” in their 40s and engage in less antisocial behavior. Several psychiatry textbooks directly state this. According to Donna's research, it's not true. Senior Sociopaths is based on surveys of 2,377 Lovefraud readers who described their experiences with sociopaths who were age 50 or older. The bottom line is that of the respondents who knew the sociopaths both before and after age 50, 91% said their behavior was just as bad or worse as they got older.Senior Sociopaths - How to recognize and escape lifelong abusers | Lovefraud | Escape sociopaths - narcissists in relationshipsCourses on escaping sociopaths, narcissists and relationship abuse - Lovefraud Continuing EducationDonna Andersen (@lovefraud.official) • Instagram photos and videosLovefraudLessons - YouTubeAshley (@filledupcup_) • Instagram photos and videosFilled Up Cup - Unconventional Self Care for Modern WomenSOLD On The DreamWhat's a life selling real estate really like? An official selection of the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, ENDANGERED chronicles a year in the life of four journalists living and working in three democratic countries, Mexico, Brazil and the United States, where freedom of the press has historically been considered a “given” is now a state of rapid decline. As newsrooms shutter around them, misinformation proliferates, and world leaders brazenly suppress free speech, reporters Patrícia, Carl, Sáshenka, and Oliver face harrowing circumstances more likely encountered in war zones or autocratic states than in a functional democracy. Joining us in conversation are Co-directors Rachel Grady (Boys of Baraka, One of Us) and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp, Love Fraud) to talk about the crisis of misinformation, intimidation by law enforcement, deadly targeting by paramilitary groups, imprisonment and dwindling readership. https://www.hbo.com/movies/endangered

In many ways, aging can truly bring on our “Golden Years.” Yet, sadly, the number of scams and various other fraudulent means of targeting us seniors are on the rise. And many of these crimes are actually perpetrated by those in our own peer group. Yes, there are a whopping 14 million people over the age of 50 in our country who have antisocial, narcissistic, borderline or histrionic personality disorders. In other words, they are senior sociopaths. Our guest, Donna Andersen, knows first hand what living with a senior sociopath is like. In fact, she married one! But, rather then retreating into self-pity and bitterness, Donna has turned her own misfortune around by sharing her story so that others can learn from her experience. She's the author of eight books on the topic including Love Fraud, Red Flags of Love Fraud—10 Signs You're Dating a Sociopath and now her latest book, Senior Sociopath: How to Recognize and Escape Lifelong Abusers. If you or someone you care about has been impacted by the actions of a senior sociopath, please take a few minutes to tune in. You will hear Donna Andersen discuss the issues involved and ways you can successfully overcome them and heal from the emotional trauma you may have experienced.
The myth that sociopaths burn out as they age has been busted. According to today's special guest, Donna Andersen, author and expert in the field of senior sociopathy, and someone with her own personal story of surviving marriage to a senior sociopath, these abusers remain as bad or worse after age 50. Her new book, Senior Sociopaths: How to Recognize and Escape Lifelong Abusers, echoes and expounds on what she addresses on Lovefraud.com, teaching people to recognize and recover from senior sociopaths who Andersen reports comprise 14 million people living in America who blend into society. Donna learned about sociopaths the hard way, by marrying one, and tells the whole outrageous story in her first book, Love Fraud. This book teaches you how to spot sociopathic romantic partners, parents, family members, friends and work colleagues over the age of 50. More importantly, it shows you how to deal with them and recover from their abuse. Senior Sociopaths includes hundreds of stories from people who have survived their manipulation and deceit. Donna Andersenh graduated from Syracuse University with degrees in psychology and journalism. She is creator of Lovefraud.com, a website that teaches people to recognize and recover from sociopaths. She founded Lovefraud Education and Recovery, a nonprofit that offers webinars to help survivors and professionals identify, escape and recover from sociopaths, including narcissists, psychopaths and other manipulators. She is the author of eight books, including Senior Sociopaths — How to recognize and escape lifelong abusers, Red Flags of Love Fraud—10 signs you're dating a sociopath, the Red Flags of Love Fraud Workbook and the four-part Best of the Lovefraud Blog series.

This week, I have a conversation with Meg South. She shares her story about being in a fraudlationship with her husband. She thought her relationship was based on love and trust, but it turns out it was based on lies and deceit. Her side of her relationship was real, but her ex-husband's side was based on fraud and lies. Meg shares her story of finding out the truth about her ex-husband, what a fraudulationship is, and how you can avoid one. I consider her story to be one of strength, courage, and empowerment. I can't wait for you to listen in!
