I wanted to try to do a hopeful episode. The world look pretty grim right now, and many of us feel discouraged. The unlawful and authoritarian actions of the Trump administration keep coming at a relentless pace, and it can be difficult to see any reasons for optimism. It can also be lonely. Someone mentioned to me recently that, in times as dark as these, we need friends, but we also need comrades. We need people who share a common purpose in defending liberalism and who are working, alongside us, to fight back against those who threaten it.Which is why I'm so happy today to welcome my friend—and, in the sense above, comrade—Carolyn Fiddler to the show. She's Director of Communications at the Democratic Attorneys General Association, and an expert in state politics. We talk about what attorneys general are doing to challenge the worst of Trump's policies, and how they've already found some success. On this edition of Parallax Views, Nikolas Schreck of the controversial cult deathrock/experimental band Radio Werewolf returns to discuss Wally George. For those unfamiliar, Wally George was the host of The Hot Seat, a popular talk show that aired in Southern California in the 80s into the 90s and even the 2000s before his passing. Dubbed the "Father of Combat TV", George provided a carnival-esque show which revolved around his shouting matches with various guests. On-air he presented himself as a conservative firebrand, complete with a John Wayne photo on his desk and an enlarged picture of a Space Shuttle blasting off behind him with the word "USA #1" written beneath. He'd bring on guests he deemed "sickos" and "freakos" including Satanists, marijuana legalization proponents, and, of course, liberals. In other words, Wally George pioneered the "Own the Libs" schtick/gimmick of Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, and figures today like Ben Shapiro as well as being a precursor to the combative-and-chaotic talk show trash TV format of shows programs like the Jerry Springer Show. In recent years, there's been comparisons made between Wally George and President-elect Donald Trump, with most pointing out how both used a vulgar, combative style to appeal to their audiences. In fact, in 2016 Talking Points Memo referred to Wally George as the "Archeo-Trump". Nikolas Schreck, who was a practicing occultist whose band Radio Werewolf courted controversy, was a perfect fit for Wally George's The Hot Seat and he became a multi-time guest on the program. As such, Nikolas will be able to share his insight into Wally George and his audience. Some of those insights reveal George to be a consumate entertainer with a great deal of talent in terms of being able to provide a circus-like spectacle to his audience. However, Nikolas also notes a dark side to the kind of politics-as-entertainment Wally George brought to the table. In addition to Wally George and the parallels between Wally George and Donald Trump, Nikolas and I will also discuss the Satanic Panic and his analysis of how it connects to QAnon. As someone who was in the thick of the Satanic Panic, Nikolas has a great deal to say on this subject and will detail how he and his former wife have been targetted by QAnon. We will also discuss his analysis of Trump and MAGA, the vulgarian showbiz of GOP politics, the broken American male and the misogyny of right-wing influencers like Andrew Tate, the degeneration of American political discourse, why Schreck views Trump more as a Boss Tweed figure than a fascist, and much, much more.

Then, she speaks with Sina Toossi, senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, to discuss Trump's cabinet appointments when it comes to foreign policy. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's pick of Matt Gaetz for Attorney General just before the release of his ethics report, the GOP's Senate leadership fight, Mike Johnson's plea to Trump, a Pennsylvania election recount for the Senate race, Elon's grating personality, Biden's gift to Trump, Russia's escalation in the wake of the reelection of Donald Trump, the prosecution of Marine Le Pen, the NLRB, malpractice in the investigation of the death of Nex Benedict, New York's congestion pricing, and the sale of Alex Jones' InfoWars to the Onion, also briefly reflecting on the future of the Matt Gaetz nomination. Jean Su then joins, jumping right into the unfortunate timing of Trump's reelection as the ever-insufficient COP29 environmental conference is held in fossil-fuel haven Azerbaijan, as she and Emma unpack the extreme limitations (largely pushed by the US) of the Paris Agreement, and why Trump's plan to withdraw from the agreement might, in fact, open up an opportunity for the international community to explore greater economic, environmental, and energy alternatives on the global scale. After expanding on the myriad insufficiencies and clear western-centricity in the existing Paris Agreement, and the importance of giving countries in the global south – where the impact of the climate catastrophe is greatest – a greater role at the table, Su explores how the battle over climate change is shifting drastically from one between rich and poor nations to one between rich and poor people. Since the 1990s, 2 million people with felony convictions have regained the right to vote, thanks to crucial reforms abolishing felony disenfranchisement in 26 states. This election, these voters could play a crucial role—and based on data from 2020, many of them prefer Trump. Richard Slotkin has written some of the more important books explaining the way Americans have created myths to justify slavery, repression, and empire, including "Regeneration Through Violence," "The Fatal Environment," and "Gunfighter Nation." His new book, "A Great Disorder," summarizes his previous ideas and take us to the present, with significant analyses of American from Reagan to the present, with ideas about the way Reagan and Bush in particular brought back the idea of the frontier and the cowboy to exploit and protect it. In our latest episode, we discussed with him the Obama years, his failure to tell a compelling story, and the culture wars and intensification of gun culture in response. And we spend a lot of time discussing Trump's use of old myths about violence and white supremacy to create a Confederate restoration project.
