Content Warning: This episode contains frank discussions of rape, sexual assault, and physical violence and is not suitable for children. On a winter morning in 1472, an investigator arrived at a poor widow's home in the St. Nicholas district of the city of Dijon. He was there to interview a tenant, a pregnant woman named Jehanne, an immigrant from the county of Lorraine. She had reportedly been abducted and sexually assaulted by several men, and Jacques Borestal--the substitute prosecutor of Dijon–began his investigation by taking Jehanne's testimony. This was far from the first such case that Borestal had investigated. For about thirty years he had investigated dozens of allegations of rape, as well as dozens more of theft, violence, assault and abduction. Many times his investigations of rape ended when, asking the victim if she wished make a criminal complaint, she declined to do so. But Jehanne said that she did. This decision is at the heart of Sara McDougall's new book Justice for Jehanne: The Tale of Medieval Survivor. It is a window into a world of cruelty and repentance, of heart-stoppingly casual violence in which “safety and security remained impossible dreams”, and in which nearly everyone in society had extraordinarily limited options for justice and restitution.Sara McDougall is Professor of History at John Jay College of the City University of New York, and a member of the faculty in Biography and Memoir, French, History, and Medieval Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. She studies gender and justice in the Middle Ages, with particular attention to women's encounters with legal and religious institutions in medieval France. Her previous books are Royal Bastards: The Birth of Illegitimacy, 800–1230 and Bigamy and Christian Identity in Late-Medieval Champagne.

In the winter of 1472, the city of Dijon, France, became the stage for a remarkable legal drama. On the mayor's orders, an investigator named Jaques Borestel went door-to-door questioning his neighbors about an alleged sexual assault—and about the victim's history and place in the community. At the center of Jaques's inquiry was a woman named Jehanne, who took the unusual step of making a criminal complaint in an age when victims of sexual violence did so at their own peril. Justice for Jehanne: The Tale of a Medieval Survivor (Princeton UP, 2026) follows Jaques's investigation as he uncovers one woman's story of resilience and survival. Applying forensic analysis to witness testimony and Jaques's case files, Sara McDougall finds in Jehanne a woman of many lives and many secrets. An outsider on her own in Dijon, Jehanne had every reason to distrust the local authorities, who regularly extorted money from the city's most vulnerable residents. Separating facts from falsehoods, McDougall challenges preconceptions about the experiences of marginalized women in medieval France, showing how neighbors, clergy, and other residents aided Jehanne throughout her legal struggles—and how justice of a sort was exacted from her attackers.Richly detailed and powerfully told, Justice for Jehanne paints an unforgettable portrait of a woman who mounted an extraordinary response to a crime that was so difficult to prosecute at the time, and of a community that gave her shelter, protection, and acceptance as she endeavored to survive on her own terms. In our 2nd episode of my rebranded podcast, No Visible Bruises sharing real survivor stories of narcissistic abuse, domestic abuse and coercive control, I sit down with Sandra Dec. I knew this would be a raw yet familiar conversation about narcissistic abuse. But very quickly, her story unfolded into something far more complex, a web of betrayal, cheating, hidden pasts, and shocking truths that could rival any Netflix drama. What began as love was built on lies- bigamy, secret families, manipulation, and the slow erosion of self-worth. But Sandra's story is not just about what happened to her. It's about how she survived… and how she healed. In this episode, we explore how trauma lives in the body and how reconnecting with physical awareness and grounding practices can help you heal. We unpack the patterns of deception and narcissistic abuse that creep in over time, often rooted in childhood wounds and shaped by familiar dynamics from narcissistic parenting. We talk about emotional and financial abuse, the invisible kind, the slow self-sacrifice, the erosion of identity, the subtle control that doesn't leave bruises. We go deep into the confusing experience of reactive abuse and self-blame, where victims are left doubting themselves more than their abuser. And we explore why leaving isn't as simple as walking away and how survival responses, fear, physiology, and a longing for love can keep people stuck in places they know are breaking them. But this is also a story of rising. Of breaking generational cycles. Of embracing the shadow self and finding safety in truth, self-love, and the courage to reclaim identity. This episode is for anyone who has ever doubted their reality. Who's ever stayed too long. Who has ever been cheated on. Who's learning to trust themselves again. Sandra's story will stay with you, not just because of the twists and turns, but because of her strength, her honesty, and the light she now shines for others. So take a deep breath, and press play. A “manipulative and controlling” bigamist who married his teenage step-daughter while still wed to her mother has been spared jail.In a bizarre and unusual case, Maidstone Crown Court heard how he'd “exploited and abused the trust” of his family for many years. Also in today's podcast, specialist equipment has been brought in to help clear a motorway of debris after a lorry hit a bridge and jackknifed. It sparked long delays for motorists on the coastbound carriageway of the M20 after drivers were trapped behind the HGV. Business owners along part of the Kent coast say they are fearing for their survival after the village's beach was classed as having “poor” water quality. It was rated as “sufficient” last year but increasing levels of bacteria such as E. coli have resulted in the new ranking - and means people are advised not to swim there.Fears part of a town will become a “car ghetto” have resurfaced as developers attempt to overturn the rejection of their bid to build a 250-home estate.Campaigners were overjoyed when the proposals for land on the outskirts of Faversham town centre were dismissed, even holding a street party to mark the occasion. And an Evri driver who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer is “blown away” by a fundraiser set up for her.The 65-year-old had to break the news to her family just two days before Christmas – the community have now come together to start the fundraiser.

A CRITICAL TIME FOR THE SAINTS, Part 2 of Chapter 5 of The Church and The Gospel  Pages 58 to 65  President Taylor's statement that “many of the Saints would apostatize because of this principle” came to pass just a year later. On June 30, 1887, a convention was held for the purpose of creating a constitution in the event Utah became a state. Although not the first effort in this direction, it was significant because of the willingness of the Mormons themselves to forbid polygamy and punish those who lived it. Orson F. Whitney said that “The movement was especially notable from the fact that it was proposed by the Mormons—the Gentiles refusing to take any part in the proceedings.” (History of Utah 3:583) The convention continued for a week, until July 7th. As a result, a constitution was framed and adopted, including the following provision: Section 12 (of Article XV). Bigamy and polygamy being considered incompatible with a republican form of government, each of them is hereby forbidden and declared a misdemeanor. Any person who shall violate this section shall, on conviction thereof, be punished by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars, and by imprisonment for a term of not less than six months, nor more than three years, in the discretion of the court. (History of Utah, Whitney, 3:584) The election occurred on Monday, the 1st of August [1887]. The count of the votes cast showed the following result: For the Constitution..  13,195 Against the Constitution..   502 (Ibid., p. 585) The Saints had spoken! John Taylor's prophecy was already being fulfilled. The vote demonstrated a ratio of 27 to 1 against plural marriage. The Saints had reversed their position in 35 years.

Michael Zimmerman chronicles the painful story of two families built on one lie, forever linked through betrayal, infidelity and bigamy. Then, after hitting rock bottom, Mike becomes a father of his own, and soon discovers something more powerful than the lies; a story of resilience, recovery and hope. In Michael's Words... “Looking back now, there were always red flags – signs that my father was not the man we thought he was…his absence on holidays, his secrecy, and the constant excuses that took him out of town. It's human nature to trust the people we love. But that's what makes my father's betrayal so heinous. He took advantage of the trust that the people who loved him had invested in him. It wasn't simply infidelity. No, my father's deceit was truly sociopathic. He built and designed our entire identity as a family – our lives – to facilitate his deceit. The truth, when we finally learned it, not only fundamentally changed our family moving forward, it tainted every memory we had together.”

In October of 1946, a chiropractor and rancher named Willis "W.D." Broadhurst was beaten with a wrench and finished off with a shotgun on a lonely eastern Oregon road. Investigators would soon accuse his wife Gladys of plotting the doctor's murder with the help of his young cowhand and her lover, Alvin Williams. Stunning details of her deception would be revealed during the trial, including accusations that she was a bigamist who had left multiple husbands in her wake. My guest is Patrick Gallagher, whose family connection to this story led him on a personal journey to learn more about this compelling and mostly forgotten case. His book, titled " 'TIL DEATH DO US...': A True Crime Story of Bigamy and Murder" is available for purchase here: https://www.amazon.com/TIL-DEATH-DO-US-Bigamy/dp/1952225167/

My special guest tonight is author Patrick Gallagher who's here to discuss his new book called 'Til Death Do Us'.  In August 1945, Gladys Lincoln of Sacramento contacted prosperous Dr. W. D. Broadhurst of Caldwell, Idaho, and rekindled a romance from twenty years earlier. After many passionate letter exchanges and several sexually-charged meetings, they were married in Reno, Nevada on May 20, 1946. After a passion-filled three-day weekend together, the doctor returned to his home in Idaho, and Gladys returned to Sacramento … and to her husband, Leslie Lincoln! But Gladys was much more than a bigamist.  Gladys needed something even she didn’t understand. She married her first husband when she was 20, and her second husband only 14 months later. The second marriage lasted only two years, the third less than 16 months. Leslie Lincoln was her fifth, and Dr. Broadhurst became her sixth. But what desperate need drove her to go from marriage to marriage?  Then what dark mindset moved her and her young cowboy chauffeur to commit murder? Find out in ‘TIL DEATH DO US…’ the gripping new true crime from WildBlue Press author Patrick Gallagher, whose grandfather was Gladys’ lead defense attorney during her sensational trial.  It's super easy to access our archives!    Do you frequently miss episodes of Mysterious Radio?
