Matthew Page, co-manager of the Guinness Global Equity Income fund, talks to us about how company dividends are holding up this year. He also covers the fund's investment process, how it differs from others, how the team makes its buying and selling decisions, and the effect recent decisions have had on the geographic weighting of the portfolio. Matthew also comments on the perennial 'bonds v equities' debate, looks at how some consumer staples' companies are defying economic norms, and wraps up by telling us why British American Tobacco is out, and Coca-Cola is in. More about this episode:Positive dividend news despite the difficult macro environmentCompanies that are defying standard economicsThe investment process that seeks long-term, sustainable and growing dividendsWhy the managers don't invest in utilities, energy, telcosWell-protected dividends in the USProtecting income streams from inflationThe fund's ‘one in, one out' approach to buying and sellingMore about the fund:This core global income fund typically consists of around 35 equal-weighted stocks, which means that investments are very different from the benchmark index. The managers focus on how well and consistently a company can use money to generate returns. They also have substantial freedom to entirely avoid countries and sectors they don't like. The one-in, one-out philosophy means the fund stays up to date with the managers' best ideas. In this episode we're kicking off a Summer series on Jesus films! Today we're joined by Matthew Page to talk about his new book, 100 Bible Films (published by The British Film Institute with Bloomsbury). In our conversation, Matthew talks about the history of movies according to Bible films. He highlights the ways that Bible films can teach us about cinema more broadly rather than strictly about the Bible, though he does address the topic of Bible films specifically as adaptations of literary source material. Key film discussions emerge around Darren Aronofsky's Noah (2014) and mother! (2017), Amos Gitai's Esther (1986), and the must-be-watched-to-be-believed Assassin 33 A.D. (2020), which is our pick for the worst Bible film of all time. This conversation situates Jesus films within the broader phenomenon of Bible Films and sets up the next several episodes in our series nicely, where we will dive more deeply into Jesus films. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. John Anthony Dunne and Brandon Hurlbert.
What's your favourite Bible film? And can a movie really offer a new perspective on the text? This weekend Sunday is discussing movies from Pasolini's Gospel according to St Matthew to The Ten Commandments and Jesus Christ Superstar with Matthew Page author of a new @BFI book. Tell us which are your favourites - email Sunday@bbc.co.uk. Police used batons this week to break up a clash between Hindus and Muslims after Eid prayers in the city of Jodhpur in India. Edward discusses the escalating tensions between the groups with London School of Economics Professor Mukulika Banerjee, a social anthropologist who has lived and worked in rural India for more than 20 years. And he hears how South Asian communities in the UK are affected by and responding to the violence from Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra - an Imam from Leicester who is of Gujarati Indian heritage and the Hindu author and philosopher Satish Sharma. And could empathy and questions be the best way to get good behaviour in schools? Edward talks to Ellis Brooks from Quakers in Britain about their 30-year-old "Peacemaker Project" which they believe can tackle poor behaviour and be an alternative to escalating school exclusions. And asks executive headteacher Rukhsana Ahmed, who believes in rules and discipline, if such an approach would work for the persistent bad behaviour she's seen in her career.
John Bleasdale talks to Matthew Page about his new book 100 Bible Films. From The Passion of the Christ to Life of Brian, and from The Ten Commandments to Last Temptation of Christ, filmmakers have been adapting the stories of the Bible for over 120 years, from first time the Höritz Passion Play was filmed in the Czech Republic back in 1897. Ever since, these stories have inspired musicals, comedies, sci-fi, surrealist visions and the avant garde not to mention spawning their own genre, the biblical epic. Filmmakers across six continents and from all kinds of religious perspectives (or none at all), have adapted the greatest stories ever told, delighting some and infuriating others.100 Bible Films is the indispensible guide to this wide and varied output, providing an authoritative but accessible history of biblical adaptations through one hundred of the most interesting and significant biblical films. Richly illustrated with film stills, this book depicts how such films have undertaken a complex negotiation between art, commerce, entertainment and religion.Matthew Page traces the screen history of the biblical stories from the very earliest silent passion plays, via the golden ages of the biblical epic, through to more innovative and controversial later films as well as covering significant TV adaptations. He discusses films made not only by some of our greatest filmmakers, artists such as Martin Scorsese, Jean Luc Godard, Alice Guy, Roberto Rossellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Lotte Reiniger, Carl Dreyer and Luis Buñuel, but also those looking to explore their faith or share it with lovers of cinema the world over.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. Ian Mortimer and Matthew Page, managers of the Guinness Global Equity Income fund, take a different approach from some income managers by seeking companies with a "moderate yield and growing dividend" rather than chasing higher payouts. They talk to Dave Baxter about how this approach has worked in different scenarios and their view on the outlook for dividends - from surprisingly resilient sectors to their relative lack of exposure to Asia. The managers also tackle the thorny issue of inflation and make the case for quality dividend-payers as a buffer in a time of rising prices, while addressing questions about performance. Recently, Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia have hit new highs, making it the global epicentre of the coronavirus. As countries across the region try to curb the spread of the Delta variant, Richard Maude and Dr Huong Le Thu detail how Australia can support its neighbours and the region's potential path to recovery. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, which governs international use of the Southern Continent. Research intern Matthew Page speaks to polar geopolitics expert Dr Elizabeth Buchanan, Lecturer of Strategic Studies with Deakin University for the Defence and Strategic Studies Course at the Australian War College Canberra and a Fellow of the Modern War Institute at West Point Military Academy. All views are her own. They discuss the geopolitics of the region, the usefulness of the treaty system 60 years on and what Australia should be focusing on in its Antarctic policy. In April, President Biden held the first Leaders Summit on Climate which saw a number of countries commit to more ambitious reduction targets. Research intern Matthew Page speaks to Associate Professor Matt McDonald from the University of Queensland about Australia’s hesitancy to set a target date for emission reductions, the impacts of climate on Australia’s national security and whether investment in hydrogen and carbon-capture and storage technologies will significantly reduce Australia’s carbon emissions. The financial and social impacts of Covid-19 and the increased time people are spending online have been described as factors which may make people more vulnerable to radicalisation. Dr Teagan Westendorf speaks to Nafees Hamid, Research Fellow at Artis International, about pathways to radicalisation, including the significance of sacred values, and the importance of community in preventing radicalisation. From Taekwondo Life Magazine's Review: The Paper Tigers is a winner! When I heard that the film's Writer and Director, Quoc Boa Tran, opted to take The PaperTigers off the Hollywood studio track and produce this martial arts movie project using the Crowd-Funding route I became very curious. Before seeing the film I had very low expectations for it. I presumed that while the story was interesting, that the film would play out as a low budget, well intentioned, poorly executed project. Nothing could be further from the truth. This film is a testament to the creative vision of its creator and the clear "buy in" of the cast and crew. This is one of the best films I have seen in years. The Paper Tigers will be in theaters and on VOD May 7, 2021. I highly recommend it. This movie will make you feel good and warm your heart. I look forward to seeing it again! The Paper Tigers is a Winner! *Presented by BetOnline
