Predictable cash flow is the whole game. In cannabis, predictable is the one thing almost nobody has. Organigram CEO James Yamanaka came up over 20 years at British American Tobacco, where that discipline is the entire model. He thinks the opportunity starts there: trim the portfolio, stop chasing every trend, tighten the supply chain, lean on the science, and align operations. Germany's market could nearly double in the next two years, but capturing it will take more than expansion. Global bond yields are spiking to multi-decade highs across the US, UK and Japan, and Simon Brown argues this looks a lot like the emerging market debt crises markets usually call doom and gloom. He unpacks the Pick n Pay sell-down of Boxer shares, the Eastern Cape floods threatening the citrus crop, and the absurd Cerebras IPO trading at 150 times sales. Plus an update on JustOneLap's institutional-grade research project, results from Calgro M3, WeBuyCars and Astral, the Global Investment Returns Yearbook 2026, and three stocks on the move: British American Tobacco, BHP Group and Clicks. Last week official figures showed slight economic growth in the first quarter, but more recent data reveals a sharp drop in consumer spending. Hit by the Middle East energy shock, April retail sales fell sharply, and card spending recorded its first annual decline. Forecasters warned that the broader geopolitical fallout could cost the economy over 160,000 jobs. This accelerated this week, as data shows household sentiment plunged to its weakest level in nearly three years. Troubles in Westminster are impacting corporate planning with 39% of British firms delayed or cancelled investments due to policy uncertainty. This was backed by new surveys indicating a noticeable drop in job postings, as well as one in five employers planning to reduce their overall workforce....Stocks featured:Intertek Group, British American Tobacco and 3i GroupTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. In this episode, I'll show you my dividend income and explain why some people say I shouldn't love dividends, or even invest this way. And as I walk through my portfolio and spreadsheet, I'll show you a buy I made this week and talk through a risk that I think a lot of folks underestimate. After that, I'll use my British American Tobacco dividend payment history to explain why a weakening dollar can be good or bad, depending on your context.

What does “smart money” actually mean in beverage — especially in one of the most capital-intensive categories in CPG?In this sponsored episode, we sit down with Karen Xiang, Investment Lead at Btomorrow Ventures, the corporate venture arm backed by British American Tobacco. And we go deep into how corporate venture capital is evolving — and what it really means for founders building functional and full-size beverage brands today.Btomorrow Ventures (BTV) is not a traditional VC fund. With a £150M first fund and a newly launched £200M second fund, BTV is investing across “better brands” and “better habits” — with a particular focus in the U.S. on full-size functional beverages and functional snacks. But capital is only part of the story.Karen explains how BTV's new in-house growth platform is designed to unlock operating leverage — connecting portfolio brands to distribution pilots, commercialization support, data analytics, and internal expertise inside a global FMCG infrastructure. For founders, this episode is an insightful discussion about:• What corporate venture capital (CVC) actually is — and how it differs from traditional VC• What to ask before taking strategic capital• Why beverage remains a difficult category for many VCs — and what that means for your cap table• How to think about partnering with strategics without becoming “the last fry on the truck”Karen also offers a thoughtful framework for avoiding trend-chasing in drinks. In a world of protein pivots and format fads, she argues that fundamentals — consumer clarity, occasion ownership, distribution sequencing — still win over time. For investors, we explore how BTV thinks about co-investing rather than competing — and why having a strategic partner on the cap table can accelerate growth across the entire syndicate. If you're a founder navigating functional beverage, a co-investor evaluating corporate capital, or an operator thinking about long-term category shifts, this episode offers a rare inside look at how one of the industry's more nuanced CVC models is building in the U.S.As always, we focus on the mechanics of growth — not just the headline numbers, but how brands actually scale.Listen in for a grounded, strategic conversation about capital, distribution, and the future of value-add investing in drinks. For the latest updates, follow us:Business of Drinks:Business of Drinks website (sign up for our newsletter!)Business of Drinks YouTubeBusiness of Drinks LinkedInInstagram @bizofdrinksErica Duecy, co-host: Erica Duecy is founder and co-host of Business of Drinks and one of the drinks industry's most accomplished digital and content strategists. What's really driving the rise of intoxicating hemp—and where is it headed next?In this episode, we sit down with Tucker Johnson, whose career spans CFO roles at Lil Wayne's cannabis company and the Emerald Cup, Head of Finance & Cannabis Lead at British American Tobacco, and consulting for top hemp operators. Tucker brings a rare perspective from both mainstream finance and the front lines of cannabis. We dig into:
Decades later…its massive influence on the U.S. food system is still being felt. So, why should we believe the tobacco industry won't be involved somehow again as more consumers move closer towards this four-way intersection of taste, convenience, nutrition, and functionality? Through the direct ownership of U.S. food companies between the 1980s and early-2000s, tobacco companies greatly impacted the American diet (maybe forever). But it one of the 20th century's most influential (yet invisible) characters, Edward Bernays, who's considered the architect of modern mass manipulation, that's responsible for indirectly linking the tobacco industry to societal “health and wellness” standards for the last century. And maybe that also insinuates you shouldn't be super surprised when I tell you that as part of its mission to build “a better tomorrow,” British American Tobacco laid out a strategic vision in 2020 to reduce the scale of its business within combustible tobacco products…and among other initiatives created its BTomorrow Ventures corporate venture capital arm investing in various brands operating within the intersecting CPG categories of functional foods, functional beverages, and nutritional supplements. Also, beyond BTomorrow Ventures, British American Tobacco has a wholly owned subsidiary called The Water Street Collective, which is essentially an agency mashup of product developers and brand creatives. With the first commercialized product launch being small-format RTD functional beverages…it appears British American Tobacco wants to test if today's more-sophisticated consumer market is interested in kicking old “bad habits” by embracing new “wellness” products that target the same benefit area. Because here's the thing…while combustible tobacco products might not be showing any signs of a comeback, that doesn't mean nicotine isn't going through a resurgence. So, is recent product launch from The Water Street Collective signaling that Big Tobacco will soon launch nicotine RTD beverages? And I know by now…many of you have seen the images (or articles about) Nicotina Energy floating around the Internet, which seems to support this notion of nicotine RTD beverages becoming the next functional beverage category, but no way! FDA has been very clear for decades that nicotine cannot be a food additive…plus the ingredient does not meet the standard of being a dietary supplement. Instead, Big Tobacco is still singing off the hymn book that Edward Bernays gave them almost a century earlier. And whether it's deploying the entire “creation of circumstances” strategic playbook or not…the fact remains that Big Tobacco is already benefitting greatly from those self-reported (and clinically supported) functional benefits of nicotine. ZYN (owned by Philip Morris International) and its competitive product equivalents have exploded in popularity over the last few years…largely thanks to users on social media platforms talking about how these nicotine pouches suppress their appetite (sounds familiar doesn't it) and cognitive enhancement (which is tied to a newer appeal of modern masculinity). Also, according to Edward Bernays, “people must be trained to desire, to want new things even before the old have been entirely consumed.” Does that mean Big Tobacco really wants to transition away from the old go-to method of selling consumers functionality? I'd consider it unlikely, but that has seemingly opened a nascent segment of functional CPG products called caffeine pouches.
Was bleibt?

The episode also delves into the differences between Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) and Foreign Direct Investors (FDIs), as well as the significance of retail and domestic investors in the market. The hosts conclude by discussing the future of foreign ownership and whether retail investors should continue their systematic investment plans (SIPs). With retail investment soaring, the influence of foreign money seems to be waning—or is it? They also discuss the consequences of significant foreign withdrawals during global crises and compare the patterns of FII with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), highlighting the intricate details of market shifts. They also take a look at global capital flows through the case studies of Hyundai's, Holcim and British American Tobacco among others. Tune in to understand why studying both FII and FDI activity is crucial for grasping the bigger picture of market behavior. Today, we are breaking down British American Tobacco. Regardless of your views on tobacco as a product, the market is one of the oldest in the world. My guest for today is Evan Tindall, co-founder and CIO of Bireme Capital, and he helps us cover how the tobacco market has evolved. We go way back in time, discussing how the product itself has evolved from smoking pipes to cigarettes to what we're seeing today - the nicotine pouch market and all the craze around it. We also cover how you evaluate a company where the market outlook is so uncertain. Please enjoy this breakdown of British American tobacco. Register for the Business Breakdowns x Founders Conference. Creepy old-time radio episodes from a variety of different shows! Get full-length pulp audiobooks, pulp eBooks, and old-time radio shows ABSOLUTELY FREE FOR IMMEDIATE DOWNLOAD by emailingWeirdDarkness@RadioArchives.com!The Creaking Door was an old time radio program that originated from South Africa radio, that relied heavily on mysticism and the supernatural. It was of the same genre as classic suspense and horror mysteries like the Inner Sanctum. While not as popular as contemporaries of its time, the serialization found a sponsor in British American Tobacco, "State Express 555." The series was generally short-lived and lasted from 1964-1965 and was hosted by Peter Bloomfield. At the beginning of every thrilling episode, a creaking sound is heard, hence, the title of the show. While Creaking Door was able to present 34 episodes, a handful were not good enough for me to fix even with digital technology – but most of the series is still intact. 00:00:00.000 = INTRODUCTION00:01:54.632 = Haunted Hangman00:30:32.650 = Face to Face Music of the Spheres00:55:06.130 = Dangerous Dive01:22:05.600 = Ghosts At Ridgeway01:48:47.950 = Bring Back Her Bones02:20:14.640 = Don't Go Down Mine02:47:53.600 = Cat Woman03:16:18.280 = Imposter03:45:25.500 = Inn Spectre04:11:35.660 = A Room For The Night04:41:04.800 = Like Blood SistersSOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…This episode is sponsored by http://RadioArchives.comWeird Darkness Retro Radio theme by Storyblocks.= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = ="I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." — John 12:46Find out how to escape eternal darkness at https://weirddarkness.com/eternaldarknessWeirdDarkness® - is a registered trademark.
