VFX Supervisor Mike Lasker swings by to chat about using visual style to enhance storytelling, keeping characters distinct and alive through effects (but not letting them become overwhelming), and building out complicated "stunt" set pieces for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Note: At the time of recording SAG-AFTRA's guidance has not asked film critics and entertainment journalists to cease coverage. More about Mike Lasker: He is a VFX supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks with over two decades of experience working on live-action and animated features. His recent credits include THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES, from director Mike Rianda and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and the Academy Award®-winning SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE. Valuing team work and collaboration, Lasker previously served as a computer graphics supervisor on: SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, and HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. He began his computer graphics career in New York City working on commercials for leading advertising agencies. Lasker received a BFA in computer graphics from Syracuse University. More about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn's full-time friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse's very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask, it's how you wear the mask that makes you a hero. Starring: Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac. The Netflix feature The Mitchells vs. the Machines (Mike Rianda, 2021) gets the Fantasy/Animation treatment, as Chris and Alex offer up a discussion in this episode of the film's dysfunctional family dynamics, road movie structure, and its spectacular sentient robots techno-narrative. Topics include the contribution of Sony Pictures Animation to the Hollywood computer-animated film industry and stylistic links to both Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, 2009) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey & Rodney Rothman, 2018); The Mitchells vs. the Machines' critique of technology that seemingly sits at odds with its own visual enjoyment of the pleasures of screen culture; timeless vs. timely storytelling via the contemporaneity of the film's intertextual referencing and depiction of digital natives; the historical whiteness of AI and the racialising of voice-activated virtual digital assistants; the realisation of Katie's queerness and the fraught logic of equating screen visibility with progress; the potential to read the family through neurodivergent frameworks; and how Mike Rianda's film provides an ultimately uneven and highly performative portrayal of ‘madcap' antics, female creativity, and outsiderdom. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Here we are, celebrating our co-host Devon's birthday... without him? This week, per Devon's request, we watched "The Mitchells vs the Machines", but sadly had to record without him. In this animated film from 2021, a quirky, dysfunctional family's road trip is upended when they find themselves in the middle of the robot apocalypse and suddenly become humanity's unlikeliest last hope. This film is indeed very quirky, but also injects a lot of laughs, love, and tears into it with it's themes of family and mayhem all combined into one. The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a 2021 animated family comedy produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie). It was scheduled for a cinema release but due to Covid restrictions was released on Netflix in April 2021. The Mitchells are outdoors loving, tech hating dad Rick and peacemaker and baking enthusiast mum Linda. They live in a small town in Michigan with their children Katie (aspiring filmmaker) and Aaron (dinosaur fanatic) and their pug dog Monchi. On the evening before Katie leaves for college to start her dream course in filmmaking she falls out with dad Rick. To try and save their relationship he cancels her flight to instead drive her there in a last chance attempt at a family bonding adventure. At the same time, a highly intelligent AI PAL launches an attack against the human race and orders an army of robots to capture humans. It is left to the Mitchells to stop them and save humanity. Benefiting from fast-paced and frenetic storytelling with pop culture memes and viral videos this was a huge lockdown hit for adults and children last year. Sadly, despite the enthusiasm for The Mitchells vs. the Machines from Flixwatcher and guests, it did not win Best Animated film at the Oscars but it did however score a very respectable 3.84 overall.   [supsystic-tables id=260] Episode #247 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #248 Crew of Liam H Dempsey (@LiamHDempsey) and Chris Johnston (@spocklightpod) Find their Websites online at https://twitter.com/ERRPodcast And at https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/spocklight-a-star-trek-podcast/id1150816497?mt=2 And at https://twitter.com/BBCSussex And at https://twitter.com/BBCSurrey More about The Mitchells vs the Machines For more info on The Mitchells vs the Machines, you can visit The Mitchells vs the Machines IMDb page here or The Mitchells vs the Machines Rotten Tomatoes page here. On Episode 6 of Road to The Oscars join David Long and special guest Craig Fields as they go head to head in a battle for the ages! The speculation is over, the precursors have happened and its time for the lads to lay their cards on the table and boy do they. David battles with heart vs head as Craig dives into the deep end with some outrageous and daring predictions. Who will win? All will be revealed come Oscars Sunday. The show begins with David and Craig predicting the 8 categories which won't be shown live as well as Craig paying homage to people and films he think deserved a nomination this year; none more so than Nic Cage. Once the pleasantries are over the battle begins. The First eight categories discussed are Best Original Score, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Documentary Short, Best Animated Short Film and Best Live Action Short. Both David and Craig state clearly that they believe that all 23 categories should be shown live and this is disrespectful to many of the creatives involved in the film making process. Do they agree on who will win? Absolutely not! After this history making Flee is discussed in the Best Documentary feature. Nominated in three categories; is this the one it can win? Craig and David debate. Then its onto the screenplay categories which look wide open and cause David a real headache! In Best Adapted Screenplay looks like a match race between CODA and The Power Of The Dog and this category will surely have a major impact on the Best Picture race. The Same can be said for Original Screenplay; can Belfast beat Licorice Pizza? Or will Don't look up spoil the party? Both David and Craig then pay respects to The Tragedy Of Macbeth in Best Cinematography but who do they think will win? The lads then discuss Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Visual Effects and Best International Feature. All of these categories have strong betting favourites but will Craig play it safe? Of course not! Craig makes some outlandish predictions in 2 of these categories. It's then onto Best Original Song, a category that should be locked up but looks strangely open. David and Craig select different songs, but who will be right come Oscars Sunday?David sings the praises of The Mitchells Vs The Machines but will he stand by it or chose the betting favourite Encanto? It's then onto one of the hardest and most open categories of the night; Best Actress. Arguably any of the five nominees could win, but who do David and Craig pick? David struggles to decide. The show then moves onto Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor And Best Supporting Actor which looks much simpler to predict but this is the Oscars, you just never know. The Show concludes with the big one… Best Picture! Will it be The Power Of The Dog or will it be CODA? Or could Belfast cause a massive shock and take home the big prize? David and Craig make their predictions and it may not be what you expect.

Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair's chief critic and co-host of the podcast Little Gold Men, joins 'Daddy Issues' for a second year and counting to discuss fatherly presence in this year's Oscars nominations and to make his winner predictions. Fathers were a source of tender support in several of this year's nominated films'— as opposed to last year when they were tragically slipping away to Alzheimer's, drunk, or learning from an octopus. Nominated films like CODA, King Richard, Dune, Flee, Raya and the Dragon, Encanto, Mitchells Vs the Machine, and Luca all feature fathers of characters who are classic outliers. There's a lot less bullying and emotional infancy among these characters and a lot more kind-hearted helping of those who deserve a voice. It was also a big year for female directors contemplating gender norms. Maggie Gyllenhall's film adaptation of Elena Ferrante's novel The Lost Daughter explores an ambivalent mother who leaves her family in pursuit of her own academic career in a narrative that is traditionally attached to fathers. Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, set in the 1920s American West, explores repressed rage and desire, internalized homophobia, particularly femme phobia, the complexities of mentorship, and history repeating itself. It's also the most nominated film of the year, which really sticks in noted bitch Sam Elliott's craw. We also discuss the "shockingly good" West Side Story, the incredible woof that was Being the Ricardos, and unpack Campion's biggest Power of the Dog misstep.
