Richard interviews Fred Moskowitz, who breaks down how investing in real estate debt shifts you from making payments to receiving them. He explains his strategy of buying institutionally originated residential mortgage notes at a discount, then generating consistent cash flow through servicing and portfolio management. The conversation highlights why note investing is a scalable, steady alternative to equity, with returns driven by yield, collateral position, and disciplined risk management. They also dig into how pricing inefficiencies, borrower behavior, and liquidity needs create opportunity in the secondary loan market. Fred shares how investors evaluate loans based on payment history, equity, and local market dynamics, emphasizing that strong processes and servicing are key to managing risk. In this episode of the Planet MicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Michael Fritzell, Editor of Asian Century Stocks Newsletter. We break down the evolving opportunity set across Asia - from China's state-driven economic shift and ongoing property fallout to the corporate governance unlocks happening in Japan and South Korea. We also dig into why Southeast Asia may be one of the most overlooked pockets of value globally, with “old economy” businesses trading at compelling valuations while capital chases AI elsewhere. The conversation highlights where inefficiencies exist today, how to think about insider alignment and currency tailwinds, and the key risks - from VIE structures to related-party transactions - that investors need to navigate when hunting for microcap alpha across the region. We mention several companies and sectors during this conversation, and I'm not a shareholder in any of them. Sam Gaer's career spans several major shifts in market structure — from the open-outcry pits of COMEX to high-frequency trading and now crypto derivatives. Sam began his career as a teenage runner on the COMEX floor during the gold boom of the early 1980s before becoming a copper pit trader himself. While most traders relied purely on instinct, Sam was already experimenting with technology — building early pricing tools that helped identify inefficiencies in spread markets. His path eventually led beyond the trading floor into exchange technology and market infrastructure, including building trading software that was later acquired by the New York Mercantile Exchange. In recent years, Sam has focused on crypto markets, where he applies traditional derivatives frameworks to volatility, options, and digital asset trading. In this episode, Sam shares insights from decades of experience across multiple market regimes and discusses how trading edge evolves as markets and technology continue to change. In this episode, we explore: · Getting introduced to markets as a teenager · Life inside the COMEX copper trading pits · Early use of computers to price commodity spreads · Inefficiencies in open-outcry markets · Building exchange technology and selling Trading Gear to NYMEX · The transition from pit trading to electronic markets · Market structure lessons from traditional derivatives markets · Why Sam shifted his focus to crypto markets · Opportunities in crypto options and derivatives · Convexity, volatility, and institutional trading frameworks in digital assets About the guest: Sam Gaer, Chief Investment Officer of the Directional Strategy at Monarq Asset Management, has more than three decades of experience across derivatives trading, exchange technology, and quantitative strategy development. He previously served as Chief Information Officer of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), where he helped modernize the exchange's trading infrastructure. Earlier in his career, he was a floor trader on the COMEX commodities exchange and later founded Trading Gear, a technology firm whose trading software was acquired by NYMEX. Sam has also launched and managed quantitative trading strategies focused on derivatives and volatility markets, and today works on institutional trading approaches within digital asset markets. Welcome to Rotosetters, the fantasy baseball edition of Tablesetters, where draft strategy is treated as portfolio construction rather than guesswork. Episode 143 focuses on one foundational reality of 2026 drafts: championships are not won in the first three rounds — they are separated in the middle rounds, where recency bias, injury noise, role uncertainty, and surface-level regression distort player value. This is not a generic sleeper list. It is a structural breakdown of how to build surplus value into your roster. We open by reframing how fantasy managers should approach the middle tiers of drafts across roto, head-to-head categories, and points formats. The discussion centers on identifying skill that remains intact even when narrative suppresses cost — whether that narrative is batting average volatility, ERA inflation, missed time, platoon splits, or transitional uncertainty. From there, the episode is organized around portfolio logic rather than individual hype: Bankable power being drafted as decline rather than volume fluctuation • Ceiling bats whose batting averages obscure true impact potential • Cost-controlled innings arms that stabilize ratios while others chase volatility • Injury-discounted pitchers with underlying swing-and-miss metrics still intact • Positional leverage at thin spots where category advantage compounds • Near-zero-cost stashes with developmental adjustments already underway Each profile is evaluated through projection versus draft position, not name recognition. The emphasis is format application. Roto managers should be thinking about category insulation and ratio preservation. Points managers should be thinking strikeout volume, innings stability, and weekly floor. The through line is simple: draft skill where the market is pricing narrative. By the end of the episode, the goal is not just to give you names — it is to give you clarity on what you are buying at cost, how each profile fits into different roster builds, and where inefficiencies currently exist in 2026 draft rooms. Fantasy titles are built on surplus value. This episode is about identifying it before the room adjusts.

Mary Kelly Jagim, principal consultant at CenTrak, describes the role and benefits of real-time location services (RTLS) and how indoor GPS can improve facility management, patient safety, and staff morale. The use of RTLS in the development of smart hospitals helps mitigate staff burnout by reducing time-wasting tasks, such as searching for equipment, and by providing safety features like badge access and tracking. This technology is also being used to enhance the human touch in the clinical setting by providing more accurate, real-time patient location information and updates to clinical staff and family members. Mary explains, "So, let's say we're talking about a medium to large hospital with lots of people in the building, lots of equipment in the building, lots of things that they might be able to leverage real-time location systems for. And so those organizations are generally looking for a formal deal. They want to be able to keep track of equipment, and they want to provide a safe environment with a security solution for their staff. They might also want to look at safety around hand hygiene, so they're seeking a solution to make sure staff are washing their hands. We also might be looking at medication and other safety measures through environmental monitoring that we can provide. And then, in addition to that, they might be looking at getting into integration with their electronic health record and be able to incorporate patient flow." "RTLS-enabled patient flow ensures they can always see the actual location of their patients. Traditionally, they're used for seeing the assigned room, but that might not actually be where the patient is at that point in time. So, we can offer things like that, and that can be a real patient experience satisfier. And then you can also help with electronic health record integration, we can help them to capture major milestone pieces. Happy New Year! Welcome back for the kickoff of Season 7 episode 1 of Light ‘Em Up.In this debut episode:We welcome back to the witness stand a dear friend of the show.Sarah Cintron. Sarah is the mother of Juan Cabrera. We were honored to sit and interview her on March 30th of 2024 as we shined the antiseptic light of the truth on a 2019 murder case out of the State of Michigan. That case was, The People v Cabrera (Juan Cabrera, her first born son). Our first episode that we shared together is entitled:“My Son Was Judged to be Guilty Before He Ever Stepped One Foot in the Courtroom”: Life Lessons, Revelations & Preventative Awareness from the mother of a Son Convicted of 1st Degree Pre-meditated Murder. You can find that episode here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/823981/episodes/14787590-my-son-was-judged-to-be-guilty-before-he-ever-stepped-one-foot-in-the-courtroom-life-lessons-revelations-preventative-awareness-from-the-mother-of-a-son-convicted-of-1st-degree-pre-meditated-murder.mp3?download=trueJuan was convicted of premeditated intentional murder at the age of 18 by a jury that only took 120 minutes to decide on a charge that mandated him by statute to serve Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole (LWOP) — for a murder where the actual “video evidence” in the case did not in any way, shape or form show the face, clothing, nor any single, solitary identifying physical characteristic of the shooter. How does a jury reach a unanimous decision of “beyond a reasonable doubt with “evidence” such as this? This case cries out for a fair and unbiased look at it — something that has not happened to date.Seven years her son has been behind bars for a crime he and his mom maintain he did not commit. Seven long, difficult years.Since day one Sarah has become an advocate for her son. She has worked hard to educate herself regarding the brokenness of the criminal justice system and specifically the egregious errors in her son's case. The criminal justice system's "brokenness" stems from deep-seated issues like mass incarceration, extreme racial disparities (disproportionately affecting Black and Brown communities), forcing innocent people into plea deals, and a cycle of poverty/re-offense for non-violent offenders.Inefficiencies arise from slow processes, lack of data uniformity, and outdated technology, leading to high costs, lost public trust, and poor public safety outcomes.Up to her last breath on this earth, she has vowed to continue to advocate for her son's innocence and for those who find themselves buried, battered and overwhelmed in, by and among a corrupt system.Using her voice and her social media platforms, she is educating and empowering those who find themselves in a similar situation. She works tirelessly demanding reform to address systemic bias, harsh sentencing, and unequal accountability.Just after midnight on February 16, 2019, a group of teens gathered at a hotel to celebrate the belated birthday of a mutual friend. Two of the party attendees have a verbal altercation in the hallway right outside of the room. PREVIEW — Joseph Sternberg — Contrasting U.S. Healthcare Innovation with European Availability Issues. Sternberg argues that while the American healthcare system suffers from significant financing inefficiencies and administrative complexity, the overall quality and availability of care remain "phenomenal" compared to Europeanhealthcare systems characterized by chronic access limitations and supply constraints. Sternberg documents that Europeconfronts a profound availability problem wherein healthcare resources are insufficient to meet aggregate patient demand, necessitating systematic rationing through extended wait times and treatment delays. Sternberg argues that Europeanpolicymakers must fundamentally reconsider resource allocation strategies to encourage innovation essential for generating superior economic and health outcomes supporting aging populations facing escalating chronic disease burdens. 1863 CHANCELORSVILLE HOSPITAL
Fawad Butt, Co-Founder and CEO of Penguin AI, is addressing the workflow challenges faced by healthcare payers and providers, particularly in prior authorizations and claims adjudications. These processes are inefficient and often yield inconsistent results because human reviewers interpret rules differently, and patients are denied care due to minor administrative errors. Penguin AI is bringing consistency and speed to adjudication, breaking down data silos and handling non-clinical administrative work, enabling agents to address patient-specific problems and ensure accuracy and safety. Fawad explains, "When you look at the healthcare ecosystem, there are obviously the pharma side, the payer side, the provider side, and the PBN side. So there are lots of areas where opportunities exist. We think payers and providers are especially challenged, and I think the area where they struggle is in the administrative workflow. And these are things like prior authorization and risk adjustment, claims adjudication, and payment integrity on the payer side." "There are things like scheduling and patient 360, or onboarding and referrals, as well as some risk adjustment for entities that are risk-bearing, and ultimately, all the functions around revenue cycle management for providers. I think the payers and providers have a tremendous amount of technology and resourcing support, but these functions have not really been what I would say reimagined in over a decade. And I think with AI, there is a real opportunity to come back and try to optimize." #PenguinAI #HealthAI #HealthcareAdministration penguinai.co Download the transcript here

Susan Grant, Chief Clinical Officer at symplr, reviews findings from their annual Compass Survey, which revealed the significant challenges hospitals face, driven by financial pressures, clinician burnout, and operational inefficiencies. Fragmented technology systems create significant administrative burdens, and there is growing recognition that unifying healthcare operations and strategically implementing AI are crucial to streamlining workflows. Clinicians' involvement in the design and implementation of new processes and procedures is essential to ensure that patients' real-world needs are properly addressed. Susan explains, "The annual Compass Survey, is actually our fourth survey that we've done here at symplr, and the goal of the survey is to drive awareness around the need for and benefits of streamlining healthcare operations software. So it's a way to get feedback from our customers, clients, and leaders out in the healthcare world." "I've been a Chief Nurse for the last 30 years in different health systems around the country, and we do tend to be a very reactive industry. However, I think it's built and intensified over the last few years because of issues we're seeing that have also intensified, including finances, workplace violence, clinician burnout, and cybersecurity. "We see organizations trying to find opportunities for cost-saving… especially because of tariffs." [12.37] How pallet optimization can make an impact, in light of these challenges and opportunities. "When we're talking about optimization, we're not just talking about the pallets themselves. We're talking about taking a holistic approach to manufacturing." [17.14] Onsite audits – what they can look like for a customer, how they can be used to create cost-effective and fit-for-purpose solutions, and align pallet programs across multiple locations. "Onsite audits allow us to meet with a customer, understand their specific pain points, look at their specifications – and a lot of times we see these things don't match." [21.20] The benefits of pallet and crate customization. "Customization is very important for long-term efficiencies." Will Pittsburgh's defensive struggles and frustrations continue to build against an upstart offense led by Drake Maye, TreVeyon Henderson and Stefon Diggs, or will we continue to see inefficiency from the likes of T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward? Will Mike Tomlin also make the necessary adjustments in the secondary to prevent deep completions that have been allowed so far by the likes of Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay and Joey Porter Jr.? Our guys wrap up with their final Week 3 predictions, and whether they believe the Steelers can get back to above .500 before their Ireland trip. For more sports, visit post-gazette.com. Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Dr. Robert Lederman, neuro-developmental optometrist and international speaker, to talk about the big impact of vision to learning and why we are still missing it. “We live in the illusion that seeing is easy.” Robert revealed how myopia or nearsightedness has higher incidents in certain populations, questioned why having myopia as a condition is being considered normal when growing up, and provided myopia prevention tips especially for children. He also delved in the wrong expectations set to optometric vision therapy by pointing out the differences between language-based and vision-based learning difficulties, and how 20-20 vision is not a reliable measure to know if you are meeting the visual demands of your life. Functional testing is inadequate, and seeing a developmental optometrist would solve the undiagnosed and untreated visual inefficiencies that are preventing your child (or even you!) from living a full life. Dr. Lynn Hellerstein, Developmental Optometrist, co-owner of Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, P.C., award-winning author and international speaker, holds powerful and inspiring conversations with her guests in the areas of health, wellness, education, sports and psychology. They share their inspirational stories of healing and transformation through their vision expansion. Vision Beyond Sight Podcast will help you see with clarity, gain courage and confidence. Join us for a panel discussion focused on addressing food insecurity in California, with an emphasis on CalFresh reform. CalFresh is the state-run food stamps program that assists low- or no-income individuals and households to purchase nutritious food, also known federally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Inefficiencies in the CalFresh system have become evident in the billions of dollars in unused federal benefits, as well as in comparison to other states that have achieved 100 percent SNAP participation among eligible individuals through strategic policy changes. A new state law, AB 518 (Wicks and Jackson), mandates the development of a methodology to estimate CalFresh participation rates, identify eligible but unenrolled Californians, and create outreach strategies to maximize participation; but the bill is only a starting point to addressing the program's shortcomings. Join us for a wider discussion on the impacts of food insecurity as momentum builds for legislative action to enhance the program's efficiency. We'll also examine the successful models of other states' systems and bring awareness to food insecurity's long-term negative impacts, particularly for marginalized communities. This program is co-hosted with the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank and followed by a reception. A Member-led Forum program. Forums at the Club are organized and run by volunteer programmers who are members of The Commonwealth Club, and they cover a diverse range of topics. Learn more about our Forums. On this episode of the The Passive Income Playbook, host Pascal Wagner interviews Aleksey Chernobelskiy, former executive at Store Capital and founder of GPLP Match, about navigating the complex relationship between limited partners and general partners in commercial real estate investing. Chernobelskiy draws from his experience at Store Capital, where he helped deploy 1-2 billion dollars annually, to explain how LPs should approach due diligence differently when evaluating smaller versus institutional-sized deals. He provides valuable insights on distinguishing between "red flags" and "yellow flags" in investment opportunities, dissects why LPs often miss aggressive rent growth assumptions in multifamily deals, and offers his golden rule for investors: if you can't identify at least three ways your investment could go to zero, you're not ready to invest.
