This week we have a guest! Grant Donaldson from Moni Jitchell (and many others) joins us to talk about the debut album by ‘68. Launching almost immediately after the abrupt end of the critically acclaimed Christian Metalcore The Chariot, ‘68 are a very different proposition indeed. At various points channelling equal parts southern blues, angular punk rock and noise rock, they couldn't be further away from metalcore. Written in the studio and recorded in a very short space of time, In Humor and Sadness is both an extremely fun and seemingly spontaneous sounding record that also somehow comes across as well crafted. Truly a testament to the talent of Josh Scogin and drummer Michael McClellan, it's an album full of ferocious energy, playing and charisma. In this episode we talk about the band's history, including briefly touching on Norma Jean, The Chariot, Christian Metalcore and the band's entire discography before giving the album itself a good once over. We hope you enjoy! VINYL FANS: Like the idea of the record club but don't want the commitment? Well, this Christmas treat yourself or a loved one to our vinyl hamper, where will send you 3 albums from our extensive record club collection. Tell us which host you want to get albums from, and we'll send them out for only £30 + postage. Check it out, now.
We've never attempted a two-guest show before, but we think you'll agree that it was kind of essential here, since legendary film critic and historian Stephen Farber and former theatre executive and CARA member Michael McClellan collaborated on a perfect book for our purposes: “Cinema '62: The Greatest Year at the Movies,” in which they write all about why 1962 was a peak year for film, with a high standard of quality that has not been equaled since. They join us to make their case, which includes literary adaptations, cult classics, and lots of juicy roles for women. (Sponsored by MUBI.) I had fun discussing with Stephen and Michael, their book Cinema '62 The Greatest Year At The Movies... When I first read the title I did a doubtful hmmmmmm. They make great points and the movies were pretty fabulous. We talk Lolita, would it be made today? The Manchurian candidate and brainwashing. Baby Jane and so much more. It was a year of very provocative films thats for sure. One thing I know is if it wasn't the best it was pretty close. Thanks so much to Stephen Farber. Ken and Mike talk about the inception and creation of the mythical world of The Sand Sea. Mike has been a reader of historical fiction and fantasy since his earliest memories of childhood. His experience on the football field in the O.C. through an Ivy League degree in history and four years on the gridiron on to law school in Washington DC, all fueled his dream of creating his own Tolkien-type alternate world. Ken and Mike also discuss the disciplines required to turn that dream into a published work, recognizing the influence of Steven Pressfield - author and writer's coach. This conversation could well have taken place in the home of the Inklings - Oxford Pub, the Eagle and Childs, over a frosty brew. After a disappointing 2018-2019 NBA season Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics ended the season with more questions then answers. Including what were they gonna do with their 4 Draft Picks for last nights NBA Draft. For months it had been rumored the Celtics could trade several if not all those picks away to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for All-Star big man Anthony Davis however less then a week before the NBA Draft the Pelicans traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers after the Celtics decreased their offer due to their fears that getting Davis would no longer guarantee that Kyrie Irving would resign with the team. Eventually just 48 hours prior to the NBA Draft after reports had come out that the Celtics were starting to prepare for a future without Kyrie Irving news broke that the Celtics were talking with Center Al Horford about him resiging only for later that night the news to break that things in the negotiations had gone south and Horford had broken off the talks with the Celtics and will not look to get a contract somewhere else. This now means the Celtics will be without both Kyrie Irving and Al Horford next season the Celtics still have 2 key players in Marcus Morris and Terry Rozier up in the air with 2 weeks to go before free agency. Many feel Horford walked out because it is looking more lkely that the Celtics are headed to a rebuild with Tatum and Brown as the main stars of the team and will not remain title contenders. So with last nights draft finally taken place and Ainge having 4 picks overall. Can we confirm that a rebuild is exactly where we are heading based on Danny Ainges moves. Did he opt to go with 4 kids out of college rather then trading the picks away? Or did he manage to make a move and get a legit NBA Star and show hes still all in on title contention? We will be joined by Warren Shaw (@ShawSportsNBA on twitter) of the NBA Baseline Podcast and Michael McClellan (@mycelticnation) the Editor-in-Chief of Celtic Nation

What's going on in Kurdistan in northern Iraq? Who are the Kurds? What is their status within Iraq? Michael McClellan, career American diplomat and current President of the American University of Kurdistan Foundation was at the Tennessee World Affairs Council for a standing room only Global Town Hall on March 20, 2019 to talk about these questions and about AUK and its exchange programs with Tennessee Universities. This topic plays on a common Kurdish saying, but leaves open the possibility to talk about a wide range of topics and will allow a Q&A to go all over the place. One of the central points I want to make is that Kurds finally have the chance to run their OWN educational system and they are making choices that will benefit Kurds throughout the world. By establishing two American-style universities, Kurds are preparing for a future that can go either way and that is the vital thing now. Also, it is a chance to promote Kurdish culture and language globally, an opportunity that Iran, Turkey, and Syria do not afford the Kurds, but Iraq does. Kurdistan is one of the very few bright lights in the Middle East – the cornerstone of stability and a model of tolerance and diversity for the entire region. McClellan’s brief will be upbeat, but realistic, will address independence/autonomy, but focus on the positive role of education in advancing the cause of the Kurds. About Michael McClellan Michael McClellan became President of the American University of Kurdistan Foundation in August 2018. Prior to that, he was Diplomat-in-Residence at Western Kentucky University and a Recruitment and Outreach Officer with the U.S. Department of State, responsible for recruiting for the U.S. Foreign Service by increasing awareness of the many internship, fellowship, and career opportunities available with the Department. During his three decades with the U.S. Information Agency and the U.S. Department of State, Michael served as a Public Diplomacy Officer in Yemen, Egypt, Russia, Serbia, Germany, Kosovo, Ireland, Iraq (twice), Ethiopia, and South Sudan, where he served as Deputy Chief of Mission. He was also Diplomat-in-Residence at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He retired in 2014 with the rank of Minister-Counselor. Michael’s work in Public Diplomacy focused on press and media, often as the official Embassy Spokesman. He was Spokesman in Kosovo right after the NATO bombing campaign and then in Iraq when the U.S. military withdrew in 2011. However, Michael’s proudest accomplishment in the Foreign Service was founding the American University in Kosovo, which opened its doors in 2004 and continues educating Kosovo’s youth from all communities to this day. As a Public Affairs Counselor in several embassies, Michael oversaw the Public Diplomacy grants to local NGOs and was responsible for ensuring compliance of grantees with USG regulations. Throughout his career, Michael maintained a lifelong interest in photography and religions, which culminated in a book on Egypt’s Coptic Church monasteries that was published by the American University in Cairo Press and extensive outreach on Muslim-Christian interfaith understanding during several overseas assignments. Later in his career, working mainly in Africa, he promoted organic and sustainable farming and Appalachian culture. A Kentucky native, Michael has a B.A. in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Louisville, an M.A. in Photojournalism and International Relations from Syracuse University, and completed doctoral studies in International Communication at Indiana University in Bloomington. As a diplomat, Michael spoke Russian, Arabic, and German, as well as some Serbian and Albanian. He lives in Dohuk, Kurdistan, as well as Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he has a small organic farm and keeps bees.
The Celtics returned home for 3 straight before going on a quick road trip to Charlotte. The first game saw the Celtics take on the Chicago Bulls. The Celtics despite coming out slow to begin the game in the 1st ultimately blew out the Bulls 111-82 in a game that saw 6 Celtics reach double figures with Jaylen Brown leading the way with 18. 2 nights later the Celtics take on the Raptors. The Celtics in a game that saw both teams blow double digit leads sat Jaylen Brown and road the hot hand of Kyrie Irving who scored 17 of the Celtics 29 points in the 4th quarter surrounded by Horford, Tatum, Morris and Hayward into a comeback that tied the game and forced overtime. In the Overtime period Irving again dominated as he made or assisted on all 6 baskets the Celtics had in the overtime quarter which the Celtics win 16 to 9 in route to a 123-116 win over the 1st place Raptors. The Celtics would be back in action the following night against a Jazz team who the Celtics lost to on their 1-4 road trip however in that game in Utah the Celtics were playing at a disadvantage as not only was it the 2nd night of a back to back for them while Utah was rested but Kyrie Irving did not play for the C's. The Celtics despite having Irving for this 2nd matchup were defeated again by Utah 98-86. Brad Stevens would come out afterwards to say along with Kyrie Irving we are a soft team. A couple nights later the Celtics took on the Hornets and Brad Stevens made a change to the starting lineup removing Gordon Hayward to bring in Aron Baynes. However the Celtics thanks to a big night from Kemba Walker and some poor decision making down the stretch in the 4th and lost. We will discuss these games with our Guests Chris Lengseth @Hans02421, Nick Gelso @CLNS_Nick CEO and Founder of CLNS Media, Sam Packard @JamPackard co-host of the Locked on the Celtics Podcast and Michael McClellan author of the book "Boston Celtics-Where Have you gone?"
The road to banner 18 begins now. Thats right the 2018/2019 Boston Celtics season has officially begun as earlier this weeks all players and coaches arrived for the start of Boston Celtics Training Camp. As always training camp kicked off with the traditional media day across the NBA. This past Monday all Celtics players and head coach Brad Stevens were interviewed by the media to give their thoughts on the upcoming season and a lot of the big stories that the players have been connected to during the offseason. You will hear several of the audios from Head Coach Brad Stevens to All-Stars Kyrie Irving, Al Horford and Gordon Hayward to the other key players on the team like Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart. The Celtics played their first game of the preseason last night against the Hornets we will discuss how the team looked and in particular how do the players returning from injury look in their first game action since last season. Also with the arrests of Jabari Bird what is the team saying in regards to his future with the team and the possibility of releasing Bird to make room for another player. What issues does Brad Stevens and the players feels need to be figured out before the Regular Season tips off in 17 days. We will discuss all that as we are joined by Evan Valenti @EvanValenti Host of @CLNSRoundtable; Producer for Celtics Beat w/ Adam Kaufman; Producer for Good N’ Plenty w/ Jeff Goodman. Koriana Vela @korianasez TSJ 101 Sports Talent Recruiter|Warriors Beat Writer|Sports Fan|. Michael McClellan author of the book The Boston Celtics
"Josh Scogin thrives on chaos. If you have followed his prior bands, Norma Jean and The Chariot, you already know this. You have seen things set on fire, death-defying jumps from the rafters and swinging guitars that could take your head off if you were too close. Scogin spent more time in and on top of the crowd than on stage during their wild shows! When ’68 became Scogin’s new mode of expression, one would think the chaos would die down. He might be too busy onstage to think about jumping around. The subversive element of ’68 became something more subtle ... the attitude. There is clever repartee between Scogin and the audience, wild interplay between Scogin and his ’68 bandmate, Michael McClellan and music that will stun audiences of alt/indie rock and hard rock varieties." Jacob talked to Josh Scogin about recording Two Part Viper over 7 month between tours, a strange dream he had and playing in Australia. Aired 15th June 2017.
