“Fun City Cinema” hosts Jason Bailey and Mike Hull proudly present “A Very Good Year,” a podcast with a simple premise: each week we invite a guest (filmmakers and actors, critics and historians, comedians and musicians) who loves movies, and ask them to select their favorite year of movies. Some pick a year from their movie-going past; some go deep into film history. Whichever the case, we spend (about) an hour talking about that year: we ask them to share their top five films of the year, and tell us why they love them; we look at the year’s news headlines, award winners, and box office champions; and we finish with a lightning round, where we talk about as many films as possible in as few minutes as possible. Ivy Insights

The A Very Good Year podcast is a must-listen for any cinephile looking to discover new movies and engage in thought-provoking discussions about beloved films. As someone who doesn't have the time or bandwidth to watch every movie, I appreciate the concept of this podcast as a way to learn about films I haven't seen while hearing in-depth conversations about great movies that I have experienced.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the delightful hosts and guests. Their passion for cinema shines through in every episode, making it a joy to listen to their discussions. The chemistry between the hosts and guests creates an engaging and entertaining atmosphere that keeps me coming back for more. Additionally, the guests bring diverse perspectives and insights into the films they choose, which adds depth and variety to each episode.

Another great aspect of The A Very Good Year podcast is the structure of each episode. While the guests discuss movies from a specific year that have stood the test of time, there are other segments that provide additional context. This includes discussions on award winners, top box office hits, and other notable films from that year. This format allows listeners to gain a better understanding of trends and influences during that time period.

Furthermore, I love that this podcast doesn't follow the typical "top 10" ranking format when discussing films. Instead, each guest brings their own personal connection and impact with the movies they choose. This provides a unique slice of cinema that is both refreshing and captivating. It's always exciting to hear about hidden gems or lesser-known films that had a profound effect on someone's cinematic journey.

While there are many positive aspects of The A Very Good Year podcast, one potential downside is its length. As a listener who enjoys delving deep into film discussions, I sometimes wish there was more time spent on each movie pick. Given that there are multiple films discussed in each episode, it can feel rushed at times. However, this is a minor complaint and doesn't detract from the overall quality of the podcast.

In conclusion, The A Very Good Year podcast is a fantastic concept that is well-executed. It provides a platform for guests to discuss their favorite films from a specific year, offering insights into cinematic trends and influences. With its delightful hosts, thoughtful discussions, and unique format, this podcast is an absolute delight for any movie lover. Whether you're looking to discover hidden gems or engage in conversations about beloved classics, The A Very Good Year podcast is definitely worth a listen.
