I invited Michael on to the podcast to ask him all about his stunning NYC time-lapse video, and how he captured the essence of the city so effectively in it. Over the course of our conversation Michael shared some great insights into his technical and creative process and offered tips and advice for anyone wanting to try time-lapse photography for themselves. Michael Shainblum joins The Landscape Photography Show to discuss how he creates stories with his photos, the process of creating a time-lapse course, and how the life of a photographer isn’t so different than yours.
Wow, well it was an honour to chat with Michael Shainblum for an hour about his life as a photographer and how he evolved over time into the Timelapse King. We ask about his gear, his process of a shoot & some dirt on some member of the F4 group on YouTube, some bold claims !!!!! An episode not to be missed.
F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
Welcome to Episode 148 of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast. This week's episode was recorded live at Out of Yosemite. I was lucky to be invited as an instructor and podcast host by the gracious Out of Chicago team. They put together a fantastic line up of instructors, activities, presentations, and excursions. Students and instructors were given the opportunity to interact and learn from each other in the birthplace of modern landscape photography - the Yosemite Valley. Ansel Adams' son and daughter-in-law were in attendance as well as two of Ansel's former assistants, Alan Ross and John Sexton. We had an all-star list of instructors spanning several decades and styles of work from film experts to the latest time-lapse and digital masters. It was such an honor to be a small part of it. On the final night of the conference I had the wonderful privilege to host a live podcast in front of about 40 people. Our panel included some fantastic photographers: Colleen Miniuk; Charlotte Gibb; Michael Frye; and, Alex Noriega. We covered a wide variety of topics, including: How do you find and apply inspiration in your photography? How has your photography evolved over time and why have you chosen to go the direction we have? How do we bridge the divide between the old school methods and new school methods of landscape photography? Why do you photograph? What are the positive and negative impacts of bringing large groups of people to the National Parks? What do you do when you’re not photographing and how does that influence your photography? What are the pros and cons of shooting alone vs. groups? What should students do after the conference? Over on Patreon this week, we have something special for listeners. Before the conference officially began, the instructors had a wonderful dinner and many drinks to celebrate the start of the conference and to get to know each other. After this dinner, Colleen Miniuk, Franka Gabler, Michael Shainblum, and Alex Noriega joined me for a drunk podcast recording. It was so much fun! Just head over to patreon.com/fstopandlisten for more info on how you can support the podcast and get awesome bonus content like this drunk recording. Landscape photography - how to capture amazing images of nature that captivate the viewer - with Nick Page. This is episode #17 of the Camera and Inspiration show at “PPN - Photo Podcast Network” for August 2018. This episode is sponsored by: Portfoliobox.net - Everything you need to create a professional website. https://bit.ly/2uejoyx and HoneyBook - Win Clients. Book Faster. Get Paid. Stay Organized. https://bit.ly/2sAyZIv Nick is a pro photographer for sports & concerts and an amazing landscape photographer from Washington State. He also travels the world talking and teaching photography on his workshops. Some of our listeners may already know his online tutorials about landscape photography. And last but not least he is also a fellow podcast host and can be heard on “The Landscape Photography Podcast.” Nick shares his interesting and surprisingly recent career start as a pro photographer and gives great advice on how you can excel at what you do if you spend your time wisely on learning a craft or skill. Chris picked Michael Shainblum as the PPN inspirational photographer of the month. Michael is a truly amazing landscape, timelapse and aerial photographer based in San Francisco. He is an artist and a successful commercial photographer and has worked for clients including Nike, Apple, Google, and Samsung. Check out his stunning timelapse videos and landscape photos on his website: http://www.shainblumphoto.com In the main part of the show, Nick and Marco discuss how to capture amazing landscape images that captivate the viewer and Nick shares great tips on how to: prepare for a shoot, select a location, chase the weather, frame interesting shots, which focal length to use, and much more. But also because it chronologically shows his development as an artist. You can see how over time he looked into photographing different subjects like people, architecture, and plants but he never lost the passion for his nature landscape photos in B&W. And it shows i.e. different interpretations of Half Dome photos over the decades. The book has 440 pages and weighs 4.4 pounds or about 2kg. F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
Episode 066 of F-Stop Collaborate and Listen with Michael Shainblum! Warning - mild profanity mixed into the episode in places. Michael Shainblum is a landscape, timelapse and aerial photographer based in San Francisco, California. He has been working professionally as a photographer and filmmaker for 11 years since the age of 16. Michael first made a name for himself through his unique creativity and the ability to capture scenes and moments in his distinct style of surreal, visual story telling. A dedication to challenging the boundaries of creativity, as well as a flair for coming up with unique ideas, has since resulted in this dynamic visual artist being commissioned by large clients including Nike, Samsung, Facebook, LG, Apple and Google. You will also be able to find Michael’s work published widely by media outlets such as National Geographic, Wired Magazine and The Weather Channel. We covered some great topics this week, including: 1. The story about how Michael got into photography. 2. How he gained traction as an artist early on. 3. Dealing with the pressure to post on social media. 4. Fame & Responsibility in landscape photography. 5. The inspiration and why behind our shared interest in photographing the Milky Way. 6. Transitioning away from night photography to other forms of photography - why and how it has affected the way he shoots. 7. Time management as an artist with a huge social media following. 8. How he photographed his "CASCADE - Waterfalls in Slow Motion" video. Over on Patreon this week, Michael and I had a fabulous conversation where he told me the story about how he captured his famous photograph of lightning over the Golden Gate Bridge (see below) and he answered several listener questions. APP 005 Ray and Art discuss their time in Racetrack Playa and Eureka Dunes during their annual trip to Death Valley National Park. Discuss Low-Level Lighting, Vero, flashlights for light painting, and our take on using presets. With boring skies, we didn't find many compositions that incorporated an interesting sky. It was still nice to get out and explore the area, but with the rough ride to get to Racetrack, it might be a couple of years before Art heads back. Racetrack Playa has some brutal roads. Can be accessed by a regular passenger vehicle, but beware, there were numerous cars pulled over changing their flat tires. We had all-terrain tires and removed about 10 psi to make the ride a little more manageable. We camped at Homestake Dry Camp. It is a dry camp, so bring all the water you will need for your trip. Eureka Dunes is nice and secluded. This is another dry camp, and unfortunately, we lost our potable water due to a crack in the jug. We recommend a thick jerry can for maximum durability. Again, bring all your water you will need for your trip. Photog Adventures Podcast: A Landscape Photography and Astrophotography Podcast
In this CRAZY EXTRA LONG EPISODE we cover our adventures from Sunrise out at famous Thor’s Well, awesome but frustrating sunset at Yaquina Head Lighthouse, great sunrise at Yaquina Bay Bridge, an AMAZING and highlight of the trip Sunset out at Cape Kiwanda and then an equally amazing sunrise out at Cannon Beach to finish out our trip along the Oregon Coast in November. We are joined by listeners John Henry Maurice and Kyle Kephart throughout this podcast and at times it happens suddenly. Despite my best efforts editing them in, some transitions will be sudden. Apologize for that and the length of this podcast but there is just too much good stuff to get stingy in episode 64! 1 hour and 26 mins into this podcast listen as Brendon finally reveals that he has possibly FOUND his lost memory card that carried thousands of images from his entire first half of the Oregon Coast trip! Again thank you to all of you who joined Brendon and I on this Listener Adventure to the Oregon Coast! We really had a blast out there with listeners Drew Armstrong, Kirk Keyes, John Henry Maurice, Kyle Kephart and new friends Michael Shainblum and Serena Ho. Second Part of our Oregon Coast 2017 Listener Adventure and this time we are in Bandon, Shore Acres State Park and at the Heceta Head Lighthouse! This trip had been fantastic but a day of rain moved us from the Brookings area up to Bandon with hope that the skies would clear by sunrise the next day and boy did the skies change! We talk about our working hard to take advantage of the gap in the cloudy skies at Bandon and later on Shore Acres on our way up to Heceta Head Lighthouse. We ended up barely catching a short-lived mostly clouded out sunset from the road at an overlook across the bay from Heceta Head Lighthouse and then hike up to the lighthouse to capture it at night while the lights are shining. It was a stunning adventure from Bandon to Heceta Head and was made even that much better with another day of hanging out with Michael Shainblum and Serena Ho!
