This year, the seven games that were a part of the Tribeca Games selections were co-located with the 13 Tribeca Immersive experiences at Spring Studios. I had a chance to unpack each of the games with Casey Baltes who curated the selection and serves as the Vice President of Tribeca Games & Immersive at Tribeca Enterprises. We talk about the narrative innovations, novel gameplay mechanics, and expression of artistic excellence included in the seven games including Nightscape, Despelote, A Highland Song, The Expanse: A Telltale Series, Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, Goodbye Volcano High, and Chants of Sennaar. The winner of the Tribeca games was Goodbye Volcano High with the jury statement saying, “For how much this game felt of the moment and questions whether you should still care about anything when everything sucks — complete with doom scrolling, dinosaurs and high school band drama.” Special Jury Mention for Tribeca Games was Despelote with the jury comment saying, “For how it offers a dreamlike portal into a soccer-obsessed child's everyday life, and shows how cultural expression—whether through sports or creative pursuit—can make our lives richer.” This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Astrophotography is different from any other genre of photography.  Portraits, Products, Landscapes, Food, Sports - what do they all have in common? They are photographing something that exists here on earth. And you could correctly make the argument in landscape-astrophotography (or nightscapes) that we are too.But I believe the big difference is that in our photos the inclusion of a celestial body is key. I could just take landscape photos during the day, but it's the connection I find between the landscape and the stars that create the meaning in my work. And that means photographing the stars, shooting something that is not physically here on earth. Why does that matter? Because there are specific challenges and constraints that come from having a subject that is not part of our earth. The benefit is that our view of the cosmos is predictable and pretty “constant” which means that we can come up with categories and rules to work within for our image creation. This episode looks at the differences between astrophotography and other genres and then goes into the different types of Milky Way photos that you can create. Spoiler alert, every Milky Way image you take can be broken down into 6 categories. And while some may bristle at the idea their images can be categorized. I find there is freedom that comes when you know you are working within specific bounds. If I gave you a camera and said- go create an amazing photo that will make me smile and I'll buy it from you… What would you do? The options would be limitless. But what if I gave you a camera and said - go and create an amazing photo that will make me smile and I'll buy it from you. I love the landscape that you live in and the phone photos from the hike you went on last week had stunning views. I can't believe that there are wildflowers already this early in the year. All of a sudden I've given you constraints and limits. If you wanted to sell me a photo you would very likely go back on that hike and take better photos of the wildflowers and the scenery. The latter is setting you up for success, and that is the premise behind this episode. You will have clarity and be better able to reach your goals when you have the constraints to work within to get there. You can't play the game well if you don't know the rules,  so let's figure out those rules and get going.

Ryan and Joey are joined by nightscape photographer Matthew Saville today. Nightscape photography is the art of shooting landscapes at night with particular emphasis on stars. It's separate from the more scientific astrophotography but shares many of the same challenges such as extremely low light and very long exposure times. Optically it's one of the most demanding types of photography imaginable. What a treat to introduce the Dutch nature photographer and our far-flung team member, Mark Stoop. Mark lives in Singapore, where he works as a marketing director and indulges his passion for photographing the biodiverse animals who live around him. Birds and reptiles hold a special place in Mark's heart. Indeed, it was his beautiful photo of a curious Green Crested Lizard that drew us to him. The image has been viewed more than a million times, and that personable little lizard with the big attitude has grown into the icon of our Sentient Planet podcast! In this lighthearted chat with Mark, you'll get a good idea of what it's like to live amongst tropical non-human animals, including monkeys, cobras and wild boar. And if you're a photography buff, you might glean something helpful from Mark's astute tips. If you want a great sunset and I want a great Milky Way and beg nature for clear skies, I am going to ruin your landscape photography. Skies. We constantly complain about them. We want the opposite sky than we are getting more often than not. Depending on our type of photography, we might benefit or lose. In this episode, I talk about the different conditions, goals, mindsets and challenges faced by Landscape Photographers vs. Milky Way Photographers. We all want light but there is this curious love we have of LIMITED light. We want the light we have to exist but also be uniquely limited in some way so that it looks even more awesome to us. Join me as I detail the differences in both disciplines of photography, share another story from the Upper Peninsula workshop and encourage all of us to get out there and enjoy the conditions coming up that actually gives BOTH types of photography really great skies!

With three napkins filled with the scrawls of locations and weather predictions strewn around her, MaryBeth announced the next likely location for the workshop. Copper Harbor! A discussion and a decision later. We were heading West! MaryBeth had woken up early that morning to find us an opening in the skies so we had a better chance of seeing the Aurora should the conditions arise. The evidence of her hours of meticulously checking multiple weather models & predictions filled the napkins with data written in a legibility only MaryBeth was capable of reading. As she gathered her nearly falling apart napkins she laughed to herself and commented aloud, "See what I mean about rather being a crack addict than an aurora chaser?" Implying that it might be even less crazy to be on crack than participate in the chase she loves best. In this podcast, I share some of the what went wells and could have been betters about last week's Upper Peninsula Aurora Workshop. From weather and aurora chasing, to the sights and waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula and my first chance using a Tiffen Fog Filter to capture Orion in the darkest sky most of us had ever been under, this past week lived up to the Photog Adventures motto of getting out there on an adventure!
