Throughout the episode, I share stories from each location while also describing the terrain, challenges and benefits of photography in these off-the-beaten-path locations that are still nearby classic Utah destinations.

If you want a great sunset and I want a great Milky Way and beg nature for clear skies, I am going to ruin your landscape photography. Skies. We constantly complain about them. We want the opposite sky than we are getting more often than not. Depending on our type of photography, we might benefit or lose. In this episode, I talk about the different conditions, goals, mindsets and challenges faced by Landscape Photographers vs. Milky Way Photographers. We all want light but there is this curious love we have of LIMITED light. We want the light we have to exist but also be uniquely limited in some way so that it looks even more awesome to us. Join me as I detail the differences in both disciplines of photography, share another story from the Upper Peninsula workshop and encourage all of us to get out there and enjoy the conditions coming up that actually gives BOTH types of photography really great skies!
With three napkins filled with the scrawls of locations and weather predictions strewn around her, MaryBeth announced the next likely location for the workshop. Copper Harbor! A discussion and a decision later. We were heading West! MaryBeth had woken up early that morning to find us an opening in the skies so we had a better chance of seeing the Aurora should the conditions arise. The evidence of her hours of meticulously checking multiple weather models & predictions filled the napkins with data written in a legibility only MaryBeth was capable of reading. As she gathered her nearly falling apart napkins she laughed to herself and commented aloud, "See what I mean about rather being a crack addict than an aurora chaser?" Implying that it might be even less crazy to be on crack than participate in the chase she loves best. In this podcast, I share some of the what went wells and could have been betters about last week's Upper Peninsula Aurora Workshop. From weather and aurora chasing, to the sights and waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula and my first chance using a Tiffen Fog Filter to capture Orion in the darkest sky most of us had ever been under, this past week lived up to the Photog Adventures motto of getting out there on an adventure! Image of the before and after of the Tiffen Fog Filter on Orion: https://bit.ly/3fcuOtM Tiffen Double Fog 3 Filter: https://amzn.to/35CNuj6 !! Be sure to pick up one that matches your lens !!
MaryBeth Kiczenski and Kirk Keyes join me as co-hosts to talk about the new Coronal Holes and what that means for Aurora Photography and they get to be my audience while I share a story about people being A-Holes to each other out doing Milky Way Photography. Aurora Season has begun and we are in a Solar Minimum. Which means we are in the valley heading back up to the mountain peak. The roller coaster that is the Aurora has an 11-year cycle as it goes up to the MAX and then down to the MIN and right now we are excitedly transitioning away from the min and heading towards the max again! During a Solar Minimum, Aurora Photographers pay close attention to when Coronal Holes open up on the sun and can plan on consistent Aurora activity while the coronal holes are pointing at us. We have the coronal holes coming back around to face Earth and we are about to head into some more exciting Aurora activity, so I have on MaryBeth on to give tips for beginner Aurora Photographers and learn more about how to predict aurora. Keep up on Aurora at SpaceWeather.com: https://bit.ly/3nMLeg7 Link to the Space Weather Woman YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3jZlFWT
Oh the smoke!! Car troubles in the thick mud at the Salt Flats & playing with water as a mirror in your composition! Milky Way Photography already has the Moon & Clouds to fight with, this year the smoke became more of a problem than most years! In this episode I begin with talking about dealing with the smoke during the Out of Moab Conference. Smoke Map at Airnow.gov: https://bit.ly/34sKaFA After two nights of perfect skies we started getting it really bad by the time we were in Arches National Park but as you can see in Royce's image down below, it still was possible to come away with a great image! Check out Royce's Image of Nic up inside the arch: https://bit.ly/3cVa2gR Rounding out the podcast, I share a story of trying to get the mirror Milky Way out at the Salt Flats, dealing with car troubles and then a tip for making your own mirrors out in Moab. Join MaryBeth and I in the Upper Peninsula! https://bit.ly/3jCLUSC

Michael Ver Sprill of Milky Way Mike fame on YouTube, joins the podcast to share the story of his Covid-19 Quarantine and tell us about his FIRST Milky Way of 2020! Mike went out to Assateague Island to get away from the New Jersey light pollution and captured three beautiful timelapses of the rising Milky Way Core over the Atlantic Ocean! In one of his captures, he had an incredible looking timelapse that starts on the inside of a tent and while watching the Milky Way rise through the open door of the tent it moves THROUGH the tent opening and out to reveal the entire horizon! It is a VERY COOL timelapse that you need to check out his YouTube channel and see for yourself! Sigh...I never ever ever wanted to tell this story. It truly is embarrassing for me and I can’t believe I just put it to permanent record and included it on a podcast! Ugh I am starting to really regret this. BUT I haven’t released a new episode in three weeks so this is coming as a perfect punishment. Also, I have three new announcements that will be explained here mixed with three stories. I won’t say what the announcements are other than to summarize what is coming in this way: Season Four -> NightScaper Nightmare -> The Guild? -> Most Embarrassing moment of 2019 -> The Contest! Enjoy! Here is a great blog talking about the Klakkur Hike so you can understand more what my hike was like: https://fortheloveofwanderlust.com/klakkur-hike-the-faroe-islands/ PS If by chance you got curious why I would go to a conference for computer software that is supposedly going to help me with Photog Adventures, then definitely check out these two links. ONLY SOME of the authors behind MilkyWayPhotographers.com join me on the podcast to share some of their favorite Milky Way Photography tips, stories, articles on MWP.com and their favorite Milky Way locations that they have been in 2019. Aaron Martinez, our famous Pentax representative who casually captures Milky Way with Mountain Lions nearby, lives in Texas but spends most of his Photography time in New Mexico and his favorite spot to get out to is the very nearby Bortle 2 area of City of Rocks! MaryBeth Kiczenski, obsessed Aurora zealot and nicknamed MegaRally, said that her favorite location of 2019 and ALL-TIME was being out with me at Escalante, Utah at Devil’s Garden because of all the options there and how her Metate Arch image came out so well she actually printed it to metal and it hangs proudly in her place! Kirk Keyes, the Managing Editor of MilkyWayPhotographers.com and one of the first ten if not FIVE fans of Photog Adventures, said that his experience at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah was his favorite Milky Way Photography experience of 2019! PODCAST UPCOMING RELEASES NOTE: Several Podcast Episodes have been recorded but a confluence of issues with guest and co-host timings, MWP.com website issues where I crashed it updating it for my failed Black Friday sales along with other casualties have pushed things WAY back! But these episodes are ALL COMING OUT THIS WEEK! So stay tuned and stay safe this New Year’s Eve! Happy 2020 and wishing you all the best in the coming year! :D -Aaron

David Thompson - a Landscape Photographer who Nick Page recently called his favorite Post-Processor - joins the podcast and teaches us what "epic light" means, shares a truly amazing Epic Light moment and gets us interested in Swamp Photography! Hear Nick Page compliment David in this video here: https://youtu.be/Jo6xonIhAOo?t=2081 David is an expert hobbyist photographer whose reputation for beautiful images has landed him workshops & Skype calls teaching photography throughout the year while he keeps a full time day job. After David shares with us his three favorite Landscape Photography areas and tips for newbs on how to take the most advantage of these areas, we learn from David a great perspective on light. How to work with it, anticipate it and he names several situations that should be considered "epic light" even though it isn't the classic blown up sky. Then David completely turns 180-Degrees and shares with us one of the most envious tales I have ever heard about epic light out at Factory Butte! His image actually has a Rainbow perfectly symmetrical arching over Factory Butte with a sky crazy pink! Instagram link to that Factory Butte Image: https://www.instagram.com/p/BllUKc9Dgic/ What an amazing shot! Dang we really are jealous! Beyond the amazing image, David shares with us the juggling act he was going through while trying to capture this shot and the endurance and optimism required of him and his friend Paul Rojas to even STAY in the Factory Butte area; especially after what happened to them the night leading up to this sunrise! Lastly, I share the Instagram message attached to that image from David that talks about a principle that what we know as "epic light" is completely relative and will change as you gain more experience in Landscape Photography. Jenna Martin - despite being landlocked in Billings, Montana - created and mastered a majorly interesting niche in photography: Underwater Portraiture! And not just Fine Art, but actual families come to her from all over to get a spectacular and candid family portrait! Jenna shares the challenges, the gear, the dedication of her models and her crazy determination to experience exactly what her models are experiencing! If they don't get a wetsuit, she doesn't get a wetsuit. Whether it is a freezing cold lake or a chlorine picture ruining pool, Jenna is dressed in the same comforts or lack thereof that her models are. In the second half, Jenna shares a story about a mystery figure in the water next to her model and it is in the picture here over on her instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/BHREyfwhlmA/ Jenna also shares her experience giving a Ted talk, one of my personal goals in life, and the details behind the scenes on what Ted Talks require of you is way off what I expected! We had a blast hearing about her experiences and crazy admired her tenacity going for a type of photography that has so many quirks about it that there are unpredictable challenges like what makeup her models have to wear underwater! It really is a fascinating story and we think whether you would actually someday consider doing underwater photography yourself or not, you will love to hear about Jenna's work! Today we are joined by Enrico Fossati all the way from Italia! A land I have a true love for and feel myself longing to return all the time! In this episode we are also joined by my father acting as my co-host who also helps me with any Italian translation. We begin the episode hearing Enrico's bucket list locations and to no surprise he ALSO can't wait until he can get out to New Zealand! A bucket list location for seemingly ALL photographers! :D Enrico recommends to us the Val d'Aosta area of the Italian and French Alps for a location that we all add to OUR bucket lists if we are interested in a dynamic, more wild version of the Dolomites in Italy. And he describes many locations in Italy that we all should practice our hand at landscape photography on even though they can be certainly over photographed by all tourists who go there. In the second half of this shorter episode, Enrico shares with us a story of a crazy weather day that he must seek refuge from the thunder and lightning and finds himself in a position to capture his most famous image. A shot inspired by his love of the Lord of the Rings city of Rivendell. Throughout the podcast, Enrico recommends to us two artists that inspire his work: John Howe who did the Conceptual Design for Lord of the Rings. You can see some of his work here. And Albert Bierstadt who is famous for paintings of famous landscapes from the United States. His final recommendation to us, is to know the area and learn the times when the light is best. Not everywhere is "best" to capture around sunrise or sunset so that can't be an automatic thought as a Landscape Photographer. You need to come back often and experience the area. If you are in a location you don't have more than a day or two there come early so you have 6+ hours to experience the area and you might just find that the harsher mid-day light is the best light for that landscape and offers you wondrous opportunities to create a composition you will never forget! If you love Landscape Photography and Storytelling you are going to LOVE this podcast with Joshua Cripps! The audio quality from Josh gets better as the podcast goes along as he gets closer to his mic on his end. Less little echo and much louder. Best in segment two starting at 36:26. So after an intro and admittedly a little too much joking around we get into Josh's travels, workshops and all the world traveling he has done. 8:31 We ask him where he would consider his top three favorite Landscape Photography locations. One of them quickly becomes one of our top five bucket list locations! In order of his mentioning them, China, New Zealand's Fiordland National Park area & the High Sierras of California. Follow Kyle Oberman here the instagrammer that is living in China and has some great images of not oft traveled locations in China: https://www.instagram.com/kyleobermann/ 28:30 Then we get the What Would Joshua Cripps Do method of Composing an image where you consider the compositional balance and then you consider the emotion you are feeling. Then you convey that emotion with your shutter choice. Josh gets to an awesome location, gets his camera out and thinks "What am I trying to convey? What is speaking to me? Is there motion in the scene? How Do I feel?" and with all this he gets his portfolio worthy shot. 36:26 In the second segment, Josh shares with us the craziest world travel story I may have ever heard! Let's just say that there are tiny ponies involved in a decision only 20-year-olds would think to do. Oh to be 20-something again! We begin the hangout talking about Matt Payne's podcast F-Stop Collaborate & Listen. If you have never heard of his podcast or have been considering listening to it, this is your chance to hear from the creator yourself what makes his podcast different interesting and why I definitely recommend it as a way to feel like you are hanging out with some of your favorite Landscape Photographers. Listen to F-Stop Collaborate & Listen here:https://www.mattpaynephotography.com/f-stop-collaborate-and-listen As we start getting into the Mountaineering Photography discussion I check whether he made the leap to a smaller camera body mirrorless system and he has as expected from someone paying attention to every pound in his bag. I am able to play the devil's advocate and get some really candid feedback from a guy who switched from Nikon to Sony and what the cons are if any to the Sony mirrorless options out there. Matt's Why he chose Sony article & weight spreadsheet: https://www.mattpaynephotography.com/choosing-sony-full-frame-camera-equipment-for-backpacking-and-weight-calculation-tool It should be noted, Matt doesn't have a Sony A7R3 and so he was not able to comment specifically on that model. Then we hear about Matt's Photography process, how he approaches his compositions as well as some inspiring advice on how we all can benefit from changing our perspective and expectations when going out to do photography so that we can get the most out of the experience. And keep the motivation to keep on keeping on! To round out the podcast, Matt shares with us some mountaineering adventures and words of caution for those of you considering more hiking and mountaineering photography in your future! Combining his professional experience as a corporate trainer with his passion for photography, Ryan has a knack for sharing the technical aspects of photography in an easy to understand way through various workshops, tours, and events through the west and the Hawaiian Islands. He enjoys adapting to the various needs of his attendees whether it's in the field learning the technical side and composition techniques, or if its in the classroom focusing on perfecting post editing techniques and helping achieve a print ready image.
With sorrow in this episode I announce that Brendon Porter is no longer a part of Photog Adventures due to a medical diagnosis of one of his daughters. The extremely concerning situation has forced Brendon to back out of Photog Adventures and he may never be able to come back. But with an attitude of celebration, I share highlights of Brendon from the last three years of podcast episodes! Funny things he has said, funny stories we shared about him, funny mistakes that he made and I end with his advice for all of us taken from three years of "What did you learn in..." episodes. I want to say goodbye to my Adventure Buddy and Partner in Photog Adventures and personally thank Brendon for all of his great work co-hosting the Photog Adventures Podcast! Listening to all these highlights really makes me already miss him on the future episodes. It is going to be so different without you, my friend! All the best wishes for your family!

Alyn Wallace shares his adventures out in Europe. He explains the necessary steps to getting a light pollution-free image of the Milky Way and shares his process and the reasons behind it. Alyn shares the experience of capturing the Milky Way out on the Canary Islands where La Palma is his favorite Milky Way Location. The dark sky location along with the amazing ability to drive above the clouds to get away from it all! The image used for the podcast cover art this episode is from one of his nights out at La Palma. In the second segment we go through three adventure stories Alyn had where without spoiling anything he put a Yoga Instructor at risk, found out he wasn't alone in a swamp and it wasn't even an animal! This episode comes from our Patron-Only Podcasts and today we start opening up those episodes for everyone! Please listen to this episode Twice! Wayne really shares some amazing insights on his process and it is a terrific episode! Enjoy! Wayne starts out by telling us about how he plans out his entire Milky Way season - yes, it's all planned out. He talks about how he discovered his love of Milky Way photography when he was on a trip to the Southwest a few years ago. When he started out shooting photos of the Milky Way he used to make shots of the Milky Way. But now his photos are focused on interesting foregrounds with the Milky Way in the background. He discusses his approach to lighting the land, exposure, panoramas, processing, decreasing noise, masking, Photoshop, cameras, and lenses. After Wayne shares all his best photo secrets with us, he then tells us an awesome story about one of his shots. Like the time he took a photo of Predator with the Milky Way. Yes, THE Predator, like in the movie The Predator!
Here is a quick update about where we have been and most importantly WHAT IS COMING to the podcast over the next week! :D Thanks for your patience! We are off to the final leg of our travels! A drive to Utah from Vegas!
Brendon and Aaron finally get a chance to get back out there with their cameras and celebrate 3-years of doing Milky Way Photography on a 4-Night Trip that of course…didn’t entirely go to plan. Beginning this trip with a cancellation as clouds ruined our chances of getting a Milky Way out at Royce Bair Milky Way Butte, we are forced to make a 5-hour detour drive to Richfield, Utah for a print that was as tall as Aaron! This print was a gift to Canyon Country Lodge out in Escalante and it was huge! Barely fit in the pickup we rented! Knowing time is precious, we take off from Escalante that same night and begin the trek to Moab with only one stop off at an amazing Martian-like landscape. The area is one we have been many times before but we did NOT know about this spot to capture from. We have actually passed the road that leads to it several times and missed out on many opportunities for a great image! Having used our skills in Google Earth scouting and matching terrain from an image up with terrain we are familiar with we discovered its location and worked to get our first image out there. The drive through the night was going to be worth it! We hoped. After sharing a nightmare sleeping condition story, we spend the rest of the podcast on being in Moab and our amazing morning at Island in the sky. Classic what went well and what could have been better, we break down the successes and failures are Island in the Sky and Aaron shares that he may have just captured his second or first best image of all time! As far as Milky Way Photography goes, this image might be his best depending on who you ask. Aaron has his favorite but this new shot is easily his second. It’s amazing how we can capture an amazing portfolio image and not even recognize it until you post-process it! We also go into the merits of extremely long exposures to bring in your landscape foreground. When you hear advice from Royce Bair and Wayne Pinkston, who both have amazing bodies of work in Milky Way Photography, you want to copy them anyway you can to get your own great images. But to this point, I was not doing long exposures for the foreground despite seeing it in their photography and hearing it here on the podcast. But in this circumstance - Island in the Sky - a nice long exposure bringing out all the foreground detail was benefit instead of a way to light up distractions in your composition. Long exposed foregrounds is NOT something you should do in every Milky Way Image. So we talk about our recommendations on when it IS going to work for you. See the Photog Adventure behind the scenes story of the images we captured that morning here on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/dYf9QIaEhbY Watch the Milky Way Wednesday where Aaron breaks down even more details from that trip and shows how he processed the sky panorama and ground panorama stitching them together with Photoshop: https://youtu.be/tqefUkIFBdU

We are joined by Scottish Landscape Photographer Kim Grant and learned something we almost never hear from Landscape Photographers! "I don't use my tripod all the time." Learn from Kim's fantastic and bright perspective on Landscape Photography and getting intimate portraits with the landscape around you to take advantage of a trip that might not be working out perfectly thanks to weather. Speaking of getting intimate, there is an Easter Egg clip in the middle of this podcast from an old YouTube clip where Brendon said something he just didn't quite...mean.
