Part 1:We talk with Alex Sammon, Slate Features writer. We discuss how the administration has been treating people imprisoned because of immigration policies, and because of thought crimes that are critical of Trump. Specifically, we discuss the case of Mahmoud Khalil, a legal immigrant and graduate student, who has been held in Louisiana since his kidnapping by ICE. The prisoners there have not been convicted of any crimes.Part 2:We talk with MIchael Tomasky, the editor of The New Republic and the author of five books, including his latest and critically acclaimed The Middle Out: The Rise of Progressive Economics and a Return to Shared Prosperity. Harry talks with Michael Tomasky, Editor of the New Republic, about his article, “Why Does No One Understand the Real Reason Trump Won?” Tomasky digs beneath the demographic information about increased Hispanic voters or concerns about immigration to explain the pivotal fact that vast fractions of the electorate – roughly those who voted for Trump – had a false narrative fed to them by right-wing media, which has become more powerful than legacy media in this country (owing in part to the decline of legacy media), and, far more importantly, speaks in one voice and has a hammerlock on the attention of nearly half the country. Tomasky delineates the strategic genesis and rise of right-wing media, tracing it to huge contributions from right wing forces, whereas the left's high rollers chiefly contribute to specific causes. Tomasky posits that the right-wing media will not be satisfied with its notable successes but will aim for full domination, and sounds a warning bell for the left to appreciate and respond to the immense political force.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Part 1:We talk with Michael Tomasky, editor of The New Republic. We discuss the levels of cheating associated with the Republicans during elections. Apparently, Trump has outsourced a lot of his campaign to billionaires, who want to continue the flow of money to themselves. The media seems fascinated with Trump voters, as opposed to ordinary people. We talk about 'fast fascism'.Part 2:We talk with Prof. Jonathan Feingold of Boston University, as part of our continuing series of Race Class.RaceClass Episode 35 | Project 2025s Fight to Save Cancer AlleyWe discuss Cancer Alley, an 85-mile stretch between Baton Rouge and New Orleans that contains one of the largest concentrations of fossil fuel and petrochemical operations in theWestern Hemisphere. These facilities expose nearby residents, who disproportionately Black, to toxic pollutants and severe health harms including elevated burdens and risks of cancer, reproductive, maternal, and newborn health harms, respiratory ailments. Louisiana state agencies and the federal government have long failed to mitigate or remedy these harms. In 2022, multiple local community groups filed complaints with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that alleged Louisiana's failure to address these harms violated Title VI by subjecting Black residents to ongoing disproportionate and adverse health and environmental impacts. These complaints prompted the EPA to investigate. In response, Louisiana sued the federal government. Specifically, the state argued that it was unlawful for the EPA or the Department of Justice to enforce Title VIs disparate impact regulations. Why? Because doing so forces the state to consider race. According to Louisiana, having to consider a policy's racial impact is just another form of racial discrimination. If that hostility to disparate impact sounds familiar, it might be because it also appears in Project 2025, the Heritage Foundations playbook for a possible Trump presidency. Earlier this year, a Trump-appointed district judge sided with Louisiana. To justify a ruling that deprives Cancer Alleys residents of any legal relief, Judge Cain stated the following: The public interest here is that governmental agencies abide by its laws, and treat all of its citizens equally, without considering race. To be sure, if a decision maker has to consider race, to decide, it has indeed participated in racism.Jonathan FeingoldAssociate Professor of LawBoston University School of Lawjfeingol@bu.edu|#RaceClass Podcast|researchWNHNFM.ORG  productionMusic: David Rovics, "Time to Act", for Will Von Sproson

The focus should now be on Vance, because it is unlikely that Trump will want to debate again.Part 2:We speak with Anders Croy, Communications Director of Florida Watch.Florida is the ground where Project 2025 is being implemented, with disastrous results. We discuss what the results are. In county races, most candidates supported by DeSantis performed very poorly in the primaries. However the "election police" are harassing voters who support reforms. Their visits to voters' homes can be viewed as voter intimidation. This is true government weaponization, because the agency is funded by the state. We also discuss the candidacy of Robinson, who is supported by DeSantis in his run for NC governor.  Robinson's remarks about abortion and women (after having paid for his wife's abortion), "people who need killing", and others seem to indicate that the Republican party has become completely irrational in supporting him.WNHNFM.ORG  production

We've lived in the shadow of trickle-down economics for over 40 years. During that time, our leaders unquestioningly embraced economic policies that prioritize the wealthiest and most powerful, with the idea that their wealth will eventually “trickle down” to everyone else.Of course, that wealth never has trickled down. Thankfully, our economic understanding has finally started to shift. This has been a landmark year in passing middle-out economic policies that prioritize the vast majority of working Americans over the wealthy few. In a future episode we'll be discussing the middle-out research and policies that are making a real difference in people's lives, thereby changing the way we think about economic cause and effect. But before we look ahead to the glorious middle-out future, it's important to revisit the history of middle-out economics via a conversation with journalist Michael Tomasky, author of a recent book detailing the rise of progressive economics in the United States. This episode originally aired on October 18, 2022 Michael Tomasky is a journalist and author. He's top editor of The New Republic. Political pundits often discuss the differences between red and blue states in the US. But political strategist Michael Podhorzer argues that this framework drastically understates the true nature of the divisions in our country. We have always been more like two separate nations—tenuously united under the Constitution. These “red and blue nations,” as he calls them, are divided by geography, by political economy, and by different views toward religion and even toward democracy itself.   In this week's episode, Podhorzer—former political director of the AFL-CIO—talks with Felicia and Michael Tomasky about the historical origins of this split, the ramifications for electoral strategy, and the role the Supreme Court has played in hardening these divisions. “They don't actually hear cases anymore,” Podhorzer says. “They look for opportunities to legislate. And in fact, I think that's really the frame we need to think about the court now: It's the only functioning legislative body in the country.”  The trio also discusses the 2024 election, the Federalist Society, and the importance of unions.  Presented by the Roosevelt Institute, The New Republic, and PRX. Brad DeLong knows a thing or two about the US economy. As one of the world's leading macroeconomists, a former Treasury Department deputy assistant secretary, and author of the new book Slouching Towards Utopia: An Economic History of the Twentieth Century, Brad is an expert on both the history and theory of neoliberalism.  And he's as surprised as anyone that it came to power so completely, and that it's lasted this long. “In my heart of hearts, I still cannot believe that the New Deal order collapsed as rapidly as it did in the 1970s,” Brad says.  In this episode, Brad and hosts Felicia Wong and Michael Tomasky dig into what came next, and Michael comes out of host mode to talk about his book The Middle Out: The Rise of Progressive Economics and a Return to Shared Prosperity—which incidentally released on the same day as Brad's. Together, they discuss what neoliberalism is (always a matter of debate), when and how it became the dominant way of thinking about the economy, and why it's finally on the way out. Maybe. Brad also talks to Michael and Felicia about the ways in which he says his generation failed, and what the next generation must do to meet the new challenges of the 21st century, from the climate crisis to wealth inequality.  Presented by the Roosevelt Institute, The New Republic, and PRX. We've lived in the shadow of trickle-down economics for over 40 years. During that time, our leaders unquestioningly embraced economic policies that prioritize the wealthiest and most powerful, with the idea that their wealth will eventually "trickle down" to everyone else. Finally, a contrasting progressive economic understanding is beginning to take hold. Middle-out economics—the idea that prioritizing the working- and middle-class is better for everyone in the economy—is having a moment. But where did middle-out come from? Michael Tomasky's new book chronicles the history of middle-out and the rise of progressive economics in the United States. Michael Tomasky is a journalist and author. Fresh off a legislative winning streak, the Biden administration is having a moment right now. Brian Deese, Director of the National Economic Council, had a lot to do with that. Brian joins the podcast to talk about the uniting principle behind the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act: "competent, effective government focused on investing in the United States, building in the United States, building capacity that's going to connect to people's lives.” But first, co-hosts Felicia Wong and Michael Tomasky discuss their mission for the podcast's first season: challenging neoliberalism's prescription for small government, trickle-down tax cuts, and an unquestioning faith in markets—and offering an alternative vision for an economy and democracy that work for all of us. Last weekend, new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz gave a powerful speech announcing major changes in German policy in light of Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.  “With the invasion of Ukraine, we are in a new era,” Scholz said. He announced that Germany would take a strong role in checking Russia's aggression through funding its military and increasing defense spending. He also announced that Germany would learn to live without the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that it had worked for years with Russia to complete and bring into service. In Berlin that day, hundreds of thousands gathered in the Tiergarten to protest the invasion and support Germany's stand against Putin's actions.  Emily Haber is a German diplomat who has served as the German ambassador to the U.S. since 2018. But she actually spent much of her diplomatic career based in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia. So she's deeply familiar with the region's painful history—including, as she readily acknowledges, the role played by her own country.  TNR editor Michael Tomasky spoke with Haber on Friday, March 4. She spoke about the factors behind Scholz's speech and Germany's change of heart, debate within Germany about the policy moves, and Russia's past and Putin's ambitions.    Watch Tomasky's conversation with Haber Learn more about your ad choices. It’s a possibility, says Michael Tomasky, special guest on today’s members-only episode of The New Abnormal, which happened LIVE on Zoom. Even if they didn’t, Tomasky, and co-hosts Rick Wilson and Molly Jong-Fast, know that Mitch’s sneakiness isn’t ending with the Trump administration. I think he’s leaning slightly more toward it, only because the ‘22 [race] map is staring at him a little bit.” They’re all still tied to the race, so Mitch’s games will continue. In fact, he’s already trying to trainwreck Biden. “If Mitch McConnell wants Josh Hawley to wear a Spongebob outfit, he will do that. He is letting Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz play their game,” says Rick. Speaking of the Biden administration, the crew shares what 46 should say in his inauguration address, and the question almost leaves them stumped. “There needs to be an acknowledgment of the precarious place we’re in. He needs to explain to the American people what a perilous place we’re in and what we can do to come back,” says Tomasky. Rick agrees (“You can’t have a car crash like this and not talk about it. Last May, Michael Tomasky published an essay in The American Prospect, the respected liberal opinion magazine he edits, that set Washington on its ear. "Party in Search of a Notion" was Tomasky’s call for the Democrats to rise above the politics of interest-group particularism and become the party of the common good. The influential essay got front-page treatment in The New York Times and is one of the most widely quoted magazine essays of the past decade. Tomasky will discuss his ideas, his critics, and the new historical opportunity for progressive politics.

How many times a day do you hear or read someone opining on what’s wrong with America and American politics? As is too often the case we love to look for the simple solution. The one answer that will explain it all. The unified field theory of American politics. But unlike physics, the answer to understanding politics, the business and the interaction of people, is more nuanced, more complex and more like evolution than physics. Layer upon layer of behavior, decisions, and leaders have lead us to where we are today. To a politics not just of polarization, but of pure primal tribalism Longtime journalists and author Michael Tomasky tries to peel back these layer in is his new book If We Can Keep It: How the Republic Collapsed and How it Might Be Saved. Why has American politics fallen into such a state of horrible dysfunction? Can it ever be fixed? These are the questions that motivate Michael Tomasky's deeply original examination into the origins of our hopelessly polarized nation. “One of America's finest political commentators” (Michael J. Sandel), Tomasky ranges across centuries and disciplines to show how America has almost always had two dominant parties that are existentially, and often violently, opposed. When he turns to our current era, he does so with striking insight that will challenge readers to reexamine what they thought they knew. Finally, not content merely to diagnose these problems, Tomasky offers a provocative agenda for how we can help fix our broken political system―from ranked-choice voting and at-large congressional elections to expanding high school civics education nationwide.

Michael Tomasky, special correspondent for The Daily Beast, stops by the National Constitution Center to discuss his new book If We Can Keep It: How the Republic Collapsed and How It Might be Saved. Speaking to a sold-out crowd, in conversation with NCC President Jeffrey Rosen, Tomasky tells of the unique history of American political parties, the rise of polarization and its negative effects on government, and possible solutions for healing the divides we face today. – like expanding the House of Representatives, eliminating the filibuster and the Electoral College, and encouraging moderate Republicans to run for office. Tomasky even offers his take on a possible presidential run by Howard Schultz.  Questions or comments about the podcast? Email us at podcast@constitutioncenter.org.

In a recent op-ed for the Washington Post titled, "Stop being afraid of more government. It’s exactly what we need", CNN host Fareed Zakaria argues that more Americans should embrace the idea of big government. While Zakaria wrote it in the context of government giving relief to hurricane victims, he added, "We are living in an age of revolutions, natural and human, that are buffeting individuals and communities. We need government to be more than a passive observer of these trends and forces. It needs to actively shape and manage them."Michael Steele debates the role and scope of government with guest host Jonathan Capehart, an op-ed contributor for the Washington Post, MSNBC contributor and host of the "Cape UP" podcast. They also talk to Daily Beast special correspondent Michael Tomasky about whether Democratic leaders in Congress might or should cut a deal with President Trump on immigration where DACA gets codified into law in exchange for border wall funding.

On this episode, Matt & Jesse have a discussion with Kelsey Goldberg (@KelseyFGold) and Jack Suria Linares (@SuriaLinares213) from DSA-Los Angeles chapter about the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Kelsey and Jack explore their childhood and later political awakening by describing the moment (or moments) that led to not only their transcendent belief in socialism, but how they went beyond mere beliefs by deciding to take action and become activists and organizers via their self-discovery process. We will also learn about DSA's history and contributions, as well as its future aims as a consequence of its recent National Convention. Additionally, our visitors to the show will talk about what DSA-LA has in the revolutionary pot that's about to boil over into a Mario-Brothers pasta of comrade-goodness. By the very end of this podcast episode, Kelsey, Jesse and Jack get our ‘DSA-Curious' Comrade, Matthew, to break down his resistance and finally #TrySocialism.
