Watching from afar as the Graham Platner situation continues to unfold, I'm both amused (by Kellyanne Conway and Trump's utter lack of self-awareness) and concerned that his being the Democratic nominee in Maine to unseat Susan Collins could make retaking the Senate a nailbiter. ---Meanwhile, Georgia Recorder scribe Jay Bookman joined me fresh from posting his latest op/ed: "Where is the state's commitment to helping Atlanta's public transit system succeed?"Valid question, indeed.

Today on AOTA Shorts: Democrats and Republicans can't agree on much these days.  Except, apparently, what it means to be a good teacher. Researchers at Arizona State and CSU East Bay have published fascinating new data showing that actually, Ds and Rs show striking alignment on the features of a good teacher, including caring about students, making learning relevant, and helping students with supports that meet their individual needs. This yet again raises the question of why so few of those core elements of good teaching exist in any meaningful way within our state and national level discussions about school performance and accountability? Closing this Discussion - Bored with this....But... - OpenAI announced it closed its record-breaking funding round at a post-money valuation of $852 billion. - The round totaled $122 billion of committed capital, up from the $110 billion figure that the company previously announced. - OpenAI said it extended participation to investors through bank channels for the first time and raised $3 billion from individual investors. The 1st Quarter Misery - Microsoft lost almost a quarter of its value in the first three months of the year, its steepest quarterly drop since the 2008 financial crisis. - Concerns about the company include the return on investment for artificial intelligence build-outs and the adoption of Copilot. - The company's stock plunged 23% in the first quarter, a steeper drop than any of its tech peers or the Nasdaq, - Microsoft's earnings multiple hasn't been this low since the fourth quarter of 2022, when OpenAI introduced ChatGPT. - SAAS compaies got crushed - Adobe, Atlassian and ServiceNow all down more than 30% YTD - Financials, Consumer Discretionary and Homebuilders had tough quarter 1st Quarter Happiness - Energy Sector up 30% - Materials up 10% - Utilities up 10% - Oil up almost 100% - EM still positive for 2026 Latest Eco - Nonfarm payrolls rose a seasonally adjusted 178,000 in March, a reversal from the 133,000 decline in February and better than the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 59,000. - The unemployment rate edged lower to 4.3%, though that was largely from a sharp reduction in the labor force. - Wages also rose less than expected, with average hourly earnings up just 0.2% for the month and 3.5% from a year ago. The annual increase was the lowest since May 2021. -Health care was responsible for much of the growth, with the sector adding 76,000 jobs. - March ISM Non-Manufacturing Index 54.0% vs. 54.9% Briefing.com consensus; prior 56.1% - - Overall, there is not much going on good or bad - just the same in US Economics ------ Next couple of months will show inflationary pressures Inflation - Tomatoes, strawberries, asparagus, veggies in general are moving higher - - - Tomato prices are rising, with significant increases driven by a 17%–21% tariff on Mexican imports, labor shortages, and supply tightening - Experts warn these factors could increase prices by up to 50% for consumers, especially during winter months, and recent reports indicate continued shortages and high costs through early April 2026 - Florida frost in Q1 and now UREA shortages during spring planing will cause even more problems and pricing pressure (inflationary) No View - Satellite imaging firm Planet Labs said on Saturday it will indefinitely withhold visuals of Iran and the region of conflict in the Middle East to comply with a request from the U.S. government. - Planet Labs will release images only on case-by-case basis for urgent or public interest needs - Satellite imagery of hard-to-reach areas useful for news media, researchers - Other providers like Vantor apply their own controls but were not contacted by U.S. government - Interesting potential for an edge in war if we can see them and they and they can't see us Dems probing stock trades - Two Democratic U.S. senators on Thursday called on Wall Street's top regulator and a Defense Department watchdog to prevent and investigate possible insider trading by government officials following a spate of market activity seemingly timed to President Donald Trump's announcements. - Reuters and others have reported that major moves over the last year in equity, commodities and prediction markets are consistent with the possibility that traders had advance knowledge of Trump's announcements concerning the war with Iran, tariffs and the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, among other examples. - Repubs only care if Pelosi does trades and Dems only care if Trump related trades The Final Frontier - The Universal Waste Management System toilet on the Orion crew capsule has been giving the Artemis II crew some issues during their mission to the moon. - The toilet's problems included a pump that needed extra water to work and a potential buildup of ice blocking the vent nozzle that allows wastewater to drain out into space. --- For a while there was no urination allowed only space poops since on different disposal systems - NASA was able to fix the issue by positioning the Orion so that the toilet vent would "bake" in the sun and melt the ice, and the crew is now cleared to use the toilet for all purposes. ---More: The UWMS comes equipped with a funnel and hose for urination, and there is a seat with a hole for bowel movements. -------Since the astronauts are in microgravity, the toilet relies on air flow that pulls waste into the toilet and ensures the capsule stays clean. -------------The astronauts can also use footstraps and handles to stay in position. Earnings Season - Analysts have been increasing their earning estimates into the quarter - which is unusual as usually see declines into the prints (so that companies have easier hurdle) - The S&P 500 is expected to deliver 13.2% year-over-year earnings growth, marking a sixth straight quarter of double-digit gains. - Revenue is expected to grow 9.7%, the strongest pace since Q3 2022. - But what about the outlook????????????????? Mag 7 Earnings expectations - Of course The Magnificent 7 remain central to earnings growth and market direction. Nvidia (~127.7%) and Tesla (~124.9%) are driving outsized earnings expansion. Apple (~19.0%) and Microsoft (~17.2%) show solid but more normalized growth. Meta (~3.4%) and Amazon (~3.2%) are slowing, while Alphabet (~-6.9%) is expected to decline. Growth within mega-cap tech is becoming less broad and more concentrated in a few names. Just In - Remember in January with Medicare Advantage and Part D payment plans from governments were being cut? - Insurance company stocks got smacked... - Expectations were for a 4% or so raise and it came in flat - ON DHUNPLUGGED - (1/27/2026) we discussed that this was a game and would come back when finalized inline with expectations  to show how great the benefit is to Medicare recipients (voters) ---- We added United HealthCare (UNH) to the Weekly Stock Pick game as a rare Purple pick - Now, final numbers announced and  are projected to result in a net average increase of 2.48%, or over $13 billion in additional MA payments to plans in CY 2027. This expected increase includes consideration of the various elements that impact MA payments, such as growth rates of underlying costs, 2026 Star Ratings for 2027 quality bonus payments, and risk adjustment updates. - UNH and other names int he sector moving up nicely on the news - (Potential related stocks: UNH, CVS, MCK, CI, HUM, CNC, ALHC, MOH, ELV, THC, UHS, CYH, HCA, OSCR) France Gold - France's central bank has sold off the last of the gold it held in the United States Federal Reserve and replaced it with higher quality bars in Paris, taking advantage of rising prices to make nearly €13 billion as it upgrades its holdings. - Moved all holding back to France   Love the Show? PLUS: Ossoff, slew of GA Democrats qualify. Meet the young candidate running for HD 4 and what impact will this session have on housing affordability, availability and advocacy for the unhoused? A couple notable bills are picking up steam under the Gold Dome; both a bit concerning. GA Senate Republicans want to return to hand-marked paper ballots (fine), but also to eliminate early in-person voting (why?). Also, now there's a push to limit transit referendums to once every eight years, particularly troubling in metro Atlanta when the region's already vastly underserved by mass transit and the state DOT is woefully behind on meeting vehicular needs. Sen. Jon Ossoff joined a long line of Democrats in Atlanta Monday to qualify for their 2026 races and greeted supporters afterwards with a somber-toned statement weaving the Iran conflict with affordability - both of which are top-of-mind with voters this cycle now.Ron was joined by Natalie Keiser, Executive Director of HouseATL, who explained how housing affordability, homelessness policy, and state legislation are shaping (or mis-shaping) Atlanta's housing crisis. Then, meet the candidate Ron openly called for weeks ago: Quentin Postell, an under-30 candidate running for Georgia House District 4. Quentin explained why he entered the race and shared his concerns about “forever chemicals” linked to water contamination in Dalton and Whitfield County.Tune in to catch the Ron Show weekdays from 4-6pm Eastern time on Georgia NOW! PLUS: a SE Georgia community wants nowhere near a nickel refinery, McBath brilliantly plays Pam Bondi & GA Repub infighting ratchets upIn Northwest Georgia, Republican Rep. Kasey Carpenter is reviving legislation that would shield carpet manufacturers from PFAS “forever chemical” lawsuits, even though investigations have found contamination in local water and communities. Democratic Congressional candidate Shawn Harris has the preferable messaging, but he's not running against Carpenter; so where is the Georgia HD 4 candidate who will, Ron wonders. Meanwhile, Richmond Hill residents are fighting a proposed nickel refinery near schools and wetlands, drawing painful parallels to the 2024 Conyers chemical fire. Hear Ron catch up with a friend who moved, with her husband and daughter, from Conyers fresh off a 2024 environmental disaster, who'd like to avoid having moved to the potential for another. Plus, the Georgia GOP governor's race takes a dramatic turn as new polling shakes up the field, and Ron highlights how the RNC is looking to let Donald Trump decide who should be Georgia Republicans' nominee instead of voters. Then, of course, there's more legal infighting about fundraising, because, of course Repubs who champaign unfettered money in politics can also hate the unfairness of money in politics.Lost in all the Pam Bondi noise was this brilliant, powerful exchange between Rep. Lucy McBath and Attorney General Pam Bondi during a heated House hearing. That said, it's hard not to enjoy / revisit the popcorn-snacking exchanges that has even conservative pundit Erick Erickson calling for Bondi's ouster. AJC contributor Jamie Dupree sums up the fruitlessness of the GOP's clamoring over the SAVE Act as Ron notes the deep flaws that'll even impact MAGA voters. Lastly, between Bondi's antics and the reaction to 'Bad Bunny' by Megyn Kelly, it has to be pointed out that it's notable what MAGA conservative get worked up about and what they don't. Florida-based minister Joe Smith wrote in his Substack about the dichotomy, and there's something for misguided MAGAs (and sometimes even outraged liberals) to do some soul-searching over.Tune in to catch the Ron Show weekdays from 4-6pm Eastern time on Georgia NOW! There are actual elderly and others who are legitimately needy and eligible. States cannot lawfully cover SNAP costs. It's a Federal entitlement program and not State funded. Congress holds the purse strings. There is no co-mingling of funds. Dims say nobody eats until the Repubs give in. It's always the blue states. Anchor babies are eligible, but undocumented illegals are not. Illinois and California have the most. It's difficult to get off the benefits. Cal's Governor is lying as he goes Biblical. Illegals will still get benefits. There are emergency actions the President can take. Use Congress salaries for food. Trump can frame food security programs nicely. The triple CCC. When Tore testifies against Brennan, she'll be looking hot. Good liver news too. Trust your President because he knows what he's doing.

So we now know what AG Pam Bondi has long known and then relayed to Donald Trump: he's on "the list." Democrats in the House are eager to have that information coughed up so Speaker Mike Johnson shut the House down for five weeks. The White House kitchen is going to need more ketchup.Meanwhile, the first WSJ bombshell on this was that Trump allegedly drew a "bawdy" birthday card to Jeffrey Epstein, but Trump doesn't draw (he does) or use the word 'enigma' (he has) or ... ehh, Jon Stewart spells it out quite well. ------All of this makes me nostalgic for when we only focused on divisive social issues; who's with me? Well, far be it for opinionated men (hey, I'm one, too ...) to sound off on WNBA players wanting a pay raise. Who do these women who're playing while the league's finally turning a profit for the first time in it's 28-plus year history think they are? Uhm, maybe the current players a) aren't responsible for the league's past but b) are responsible for its present and future, in the green?------Senator Jon Ossoff held a rally in Savannah late last week and all indications are "Trump is on the ballot" in his mind. I reviewed his 20-plus minute speeach where Donald figured prominently.

MAGA may not care that their heroes, Donald Trump and Elon Musk, keep getting caught in lies, but for the sake of history, the rest of us will just have to keep chronicling it, anyway. The latest: claims that 150+ year old people are getting Social Security checks; well, that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is sending check to people born that long ago (and longer) who are obviously not alive. I mean, someone produced a table and put it on a meme so to MAGA, it must be true, yeah?Well, no. I mean, it's not that there aren't some instances of poor management in the SSA, but not at the level DOGE & Trump+Musk insist. --------While Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) insist DOGE is doing a "careful scrub" of federal agencies, what's actually happening is key nuclear personnel were fired (erroneously?) and now the Trump administration is scrambling to figure out how to reach those fired people to re-hire them but they closed their federal emails and didn't have updated contact information to reach them. They also did this with USDA experts working to combat bird flu, hoping to re-hire them as well. --------Then there's DOGE claiming they saved $8 billion from an Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) contract, which makes no sense when ICE only has a $9 billion budget altogether. In their own spreadsheet it was actually $8 million, but in a fraudulent move, an "m" becomes a "b" and, well ... there goes at least half of what DOGE claims its saving taxpayers. That said, Elon is now floating someone else's idea that maybe (not really) DOGE will send out $5000 rebate checks to each household (Trump loves signing checks to us, remember). "Sure, Jan."-------Georgia Republicans are floating legislation that would let property owners seek a property tax rebate if the city they're in doesn't "handle" homelessness and panhandling. Their solution is to punish cities (clearly, Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, Columbus, Macon & Savannah - blue dots on the red map) already lacking in the funds to aid the unhoused and poor by taking away more funds. No solution(s) or state assistance offered in the bill; just ... an exacerbating of the problem. If ever there were a Republican that encapsulates modern day conservatism, this is the one.

I've long said Republicans were unserious about addressing shortcomings in our immigration situation because they spend way more time seeking to demonize migrant (you know, "illegals") and not the real "illegals" (employers & human traffickers) menacing (in some cases abusing, exploiting, threatning and even killing) well-meaning migrant laborers.A recent sentencing of a human trafficking kingpin (queen pin?) shows the American judicial system is unserious about the very serious crimes committed.Nor are Republicans serious about the well-being of outdoor laborers - even those here legally and/or American citizens - in the face of rising temperatures.Take Florida, for example. Or Texas. WhileJoe Biden rolled out new OSHA standards, some Republicans just want to get rid of OSHA altogether. In Georgia, there's a bipartisan effort, at least, to create a state-run guest worker program that would be "subject to federal rules and regulations." Except again, some Republicans want OSHA to go away, so what rules and regulations will protect these workers?- - - - -Mitch McConnell has become a more reliable swing vote for Democrats than Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski. Let that sink in. Still, asMitch takes to the Louisville press to opine about the dangers of Trump's tariff-heavy economic policy, I simply want to remind him - and his Kentucky constituents - he's the single-most complicit person to pin a second Trump presidency on other than Donald Trump himself. Hef*cked around;and around;and around. Now he, his constituents, and all of us, are finding out.The'60 Minutes' interview a few weeks backwas (in my view) a failed attempt at Mitch trying to re-cast himself for legacy's sake.

President Joe Biden's final address from the Oval Office was - of coruse - bittersweet, but also came with warnings similar to Dwight D. Eisenhower's "industrial complex" foreshadowing, only for Biden, it was attached to oligarchs and "big tech." Doing a little "open tab" cleanup, I realized I hadn't gotten around to sharing this (too late now) narrative buster: as is the case in Texas, in Georgia, migrants are committing fewer crimes than Americans. Even still, some Democrats are trying to find "common ground" with the incoming Trump aura by caving on legislation targeting the undocumented. Oh, and proving it doesn't pay to even "go about it the right way," as Repubs insist immigrant laborers should, Georgia Attorney General (and gubernatorial candidate) Chris Carr would like to suppress federal minimums for agricultural immigrant labor. Clearly, the blame for California's current, deadly (perhaps worst-ever) wildfire lies at the feet of (checks notes) Governor Gavin Newsom, L.A. mayor Karen Bass and D.E.I. and not wild climate shifts, (aka 'hydroclimate whiplash') parched dry vegetation and hurricane-force winds fomenting a wildfire out of New Year's Eve fireworks. Oh, or 20th century sprawl and a water system not designed to fight wildfires (but whose is?) It's not as if we've been warned about the sort of dystopian scene many years before, like, say in 1958 or when Exxon executives knew in the 1970s climate change was a near-future reality and buried it. No, clearly the Los Angeles Fire Department hiring so many "diversity" applicants and ignoring the inane ramblings of Donald Trump is what wrought all this havoc and destruction.

Jay Bookman wrote a blistering-yet-sobering piece last week for the Georgia Recorder where he spells it out plainly: Republicans pick on the trans community because 'it works," writing "Because transgender Americans are an unpopular, powerless and almost friendless subgroup, which makes them the perfect target for politicians willing to leverage that unpopularity into votes." See, legislating for all Americans to ensure diversity & inclusion is really hard, whereas throughout American history, political leaders have consistently chosen the path of least resistance: selective bigotry. Marginalizing subsets is as American as apple pie, much like school bullies pick on the "unpopular, powerless and almost friendless" kid(s). Kinda pathetic, isn't it? On the topic of trans people and schools, it took mere minutes for Georgia Republican Senator Greg Dolazal to lob some anti-trans "red meat" - again, because equality and inclusion are too hard for him - on the first day of the 2025 General Assembly session. Surely this means it's the most important item on the Georgai GOP agenda. Meanwhile the recently exited special counselor, Jack Smith, finally had one of his two volumes of final reports on cases involving Donald Trump released. Were we in normal times or in a nation that truly believed in a blind justice or justice at all, the findings would be damning. Instead, the convicted felon at the heart of that and the still-held-tightly classified documents case will be sworn in as President in six days. He, the leader of the party of "the rule of law."
