How can a craft brewer expect to win away games if they're not winning at home? That's the sports analogy pFriem Family Brewers co-founder and CEO Rudy Kellner used to describe the Hood River, Oregon-based brewery's strategy when it comes to expanding its distribution footprint.    This week's Brewbound Podcast highlights a stage conversation from Brewbound Live featuring Kellner and New Trail Brewing (Williamsport, PA) COO and partner Mike LaRosa. Both breweries have secured impressive volume growth within footprints that don't stretch far beyond their neighboring states.    Before the featured conversation, Justin – freshly returned from parental leave – and Jess discuss recent headlines, including the return of Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man in the World, and whether or not nostalgia can bring in new beer drinkers.

My guest  is Roger Glenn, who would have been the perfect spokesperson for a series of commercials titled the “Most Interesting Man in the World” -  in the world of music. Roger is a multi-instrumentalist who plays flute, vibes, marimba, saxophone, clarinet, percussion and more. He's been described as being overshadowed but in plain sight for decades. In fact, the bio on his website says it best: “He is ingredient X. The secret sauce. The cat behind the cat. Now, after decades of elevating the music of bona fide legends in jazz, Latin jazz, blues, and funk, this versatile, singular multi-instrumental master is stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight with his first new album in four decades.”  Roger is the son of the legendary jazz trombonist and vibes man Tyree Glenn. Roger is also a pilot, and sailing aficionado, who studied math and physics. And this interesting man, who has  just turned 80-years old, can still do it all. To celebrate his 80th birthday, Roger has released his second album as a leader in 49 years, on the Patois Records label, titled,  “My Latin Heart.” It's a panoramic journey through his lifelong passion for Afro-Caribbean rhythms.  Because his amazing story is so all-encompassing, we feel compelled to tell it in two episodes. Here is Episode One. It's where we take a deep dive into the backstory of his life and times, and how it led him to his breakout moment on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Do you remember that “Most Interesting Man in the World” Dos Equis beer advertising campaign that ran most from 2006 to 2018? It seemed like each episode's montage of experiences layered on more curiosity, which has some similarity to this episode's guest Samyr Laine. While it wasn't mentioned in our conversation, his time at Harvard also briefly included being Mark Zuckerberg's roommate but it then you'll hear briefly that interesting life included a 2012 Summer Olympics appearance, law school, then working for Major League Soccer, Jay Z, and Will Smith…before becoming a consumer-focused venture capitalist. Since much of that journey happened at the intersection of talent, brand, and culture…that's where my conversation with Samyr stayed, which provided some excellent depth of insights. We analyzed the evolution of talent involvement within consumer goods and detailed our most valuable non-negotiables when it comes to being successful as a talent-led brand. Samyr and I also explain why we believe this is still early innings of building celebrity brands, but also the transition strategy required for more exit events. Moreover, we talk about the nuance between creators, athletes, and celebrities that could make or break a talent-led consumer brand. But these are just some of the fascinating topics we chatted about in this episode... Nina Bergman is in the newly released feature film titled "Cold Meat" that stars her and Allen Leech (The Imitation Game, Bohemian Rhapsody, Downton Abbey) The movie was available in select theaters and also premiered in February online through KINO and "Cold Meat" is now available on demand at these outlets: https://geni.us/COLDMEAT . Nina Bergman is an actress, singer, songwriter and model. She was born in Denmark and is the granddaughter of Russia's greatest actor, Pavel Kadochnikov. Nina spent her early childhood traveling around Europe with her Russian Gypsy grandparents. At 14, she received a scholarship to the musical theatre school Urdang Academy in London. A year later, she found herself in Moscow attending the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre. From there, she moved to New York City and was accepted at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. At that time, she got her first agent and began booking various jobs in plays, movies, commercials, and modeling. She also started singing in underground bands. Being an adrenaline junkie, she found herself making extra money as an amateur boxer which later on helped her book movies like "The Car," a remake by Universal Pictures, and the franchise "DOOM" movie also with Universal Pictures. Her other work includes the starring role of Marie in "Hell Hath No Fury," a Jesse V Johnson movie, playing a French resistance fighter, and she played the lead role of "GG," who was based on a 90s goth singer in the film "Carpe Noctem," which was directed by Gene Blalock. In addition to film, she also played video game characters like "Battery" from "Call Of Duty." She has two anticipated movies coming out this year; "Chief Of Station," starring Aaron Eckhard, and "Cold Meat," starring Nina and Allen Leech, which screened at Fright Fest in London and will be in theaters later this year. Her performance in "Assassin X" earned her the Honorable Mention Award for Best Actress from the AOF International Film Festival for her role as the notorious Trinidad. She starred as "Wonder Woman," directed by Jesse V Johnson, which stars Timothy V Murphy and Marina Sirtis. She also played a cold-hearted killer in "The Wayshower," with Peter Stormare and Eric Roberts, and she starred in "Know New Art," a Newport Beach Film Festival project by the Freise Brothers and Biscuit Filmworks. Her other work includes playing the lead opposite actors like John Malkovich, David Arquette, Vivica Fox, and Jesse Metcalfe. She's been featured in numerous skits on The Late Late Show with James Corden and Craig Ferguson, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and has hosted various shows like E! Entertainment, Fuse, and The Grammys as a Trophy Presenter. Her reality show credits include Battleground Earth with Tommy Lee and Ludacris and Hollywoodfruer, the Danish acclaimed TV show. A passion for the stage drew her back to her roots as she performed in various plays such as "The Cherry Orchard" with A Noise Within, and her favorite, the portrayal of Marlene Dietrich in "Garbo's Cuban Lover" with the Macha Theatre. Her theatrical agent introduced her to Paul Anka, who shortly after began managing her music career and helped her sign a six-album contract with Warner Bros. Record by their President Rob Cavallo. They called her new solo project "N.I.N.A." which led to her last band, "Letters From The Fire." Nina worked on soundtracks for Lionsgate Films, singing the theme song for "Catacombs," "Repo the Genetic Opera," and "Sharknado". She sang the end title song in "Black Limousine" and was the voice on the soundtrack for "All About Her." Additionally, she performed live for the World Series and the NCAA College Football Season. Her work in music videos includes a starring role in Gnarls Barkley's video "Gone Daddy Gone," Sick Puppies video "All the Same," and Trey Songz "Foreigner". She has been seen in over 50 commercials and hundreds of print campaigns, ranging from La Perla to Apple Computer, Sprite, Nike, and her well-known Nature Valley and Dos Equis with the Most Interesting Man in the World. Her most recent commercial campaign is the Carls Jr. Beyond Meat and her notorious "Balls Commercial" for Saxx Underwear, where she was the spokesperson. Along with her career, Nina is an avid animal rights activist with an active voice for the ethical treatment of our companions. The life-long vegan champion for animals continues to participate in numerous charities. #ColdMeatMovie #NinaBergman #AllenLeech #FeatureFilm #ActressLife #SingerSongwriter #Modeling #DenmarkBorn #RussianHeritage #BolshoiTheatre #NYUTisch #UndergroundBands #AmateurBoxer #TheCarRemake #DOOMMovie #HellHathNoFury #CarpeNoctemFilm #CallOfDutyBattery #ChiefOfStation #FrightFestLondon #AssassinXMovie #WonderWomanFilm #TheWayshower #KnowNewArt #LateLateShow #TonightShow #EEntertainment #FuseTV #GrammysPresenter #BattlegroundEarth #Hollywoodfruer #TheCherryOrchard #MarleneDietrich #NINAMusic #LettersFromTheFire #LionsgateSoundtracks #AnimalRightsActivist

Hello Listen Local Fam! DO WE HAVE A FUN ONE FOR YOU TODAY! We've said it before, but this might just be the MOST ENTERTAINING one yet. Mike Schmidt - who very well could be the Most Interesting Man in the BLA - joins the crew for this episode. Not only is Mike the Emcee of a bunch of different Music Festivals (including Lakes Jam), but he's also been a School Principal, Teacher, Administrator, Coach, and Mayor in the Lakes Area. So... Once he tells us about his background, we then just sit back and let the stories begin... Some - but definitely not even close to all - of the topics include: Why he decided to get out of teaching and public schools The friendships he's made in the BLA What it's like golfing with Jacob Why he wanted to be an Emcee of Music Festivals Transitioning into a Keynote Speaker What being apart of the Lakes Jam family means to him And yes... the ones everyone want... some of his best "backstage stories." Stories that may or may not involve Toby Keith, Troy Gentry, Chris Janson, and a conversation with Lita Ford thats one for the books (or maybe album covers is a better term). Not only is the episode full of laughs, but Mike also touches on some really serious and emotional topics. Thank you so much to Mike for coming on the show, and I have a good feeling we'll be hearing more from him. Also, thanks so much to our sponsors Hanneken Insurance, Lakes Area CPAs, Hills Detailing Center, Posture Pro Chiropractic and our presenting sponsor Tyler Gardner with Pequot Lakes and Gull Lake Sanitation!
