Mogale and Kabelo Mohale let us in on rising from the ashes. They speak candidly about how challenging the past 2 years have been on them. We know that growth can be hard, at times even messy however we are comforted knowing that diamonds are produced from very high pressure and temperatures. This beautiful couple are such a great testament of what it means to choose each other, over and over. By honouring God and their vows they were committed to be productive with their pain and find healing. Thank you for your vulnerability Mogale and Kabelo. Are you confused that Somizi and Mohale were never married? "How so?", you may have asked yourself. Are you also confused as to why Somizi, rather than Mohale, is the one who wanted to sustain the claim that there WAS a valid marriage in place? After all, wouldn't Somizi, more than Mohale, be excited to know there was no valid marriage in place? If Mohale is the alleged gold digger, why wouldn't Somizi be happy to accept that they were not spouses?! Confused? Let me help you out. I do two things in this episode: a) answer these questions AND (far more importantly) b) I will persuade you why this is NOT a silly celebrity gossip story but a fascinating story with curious and important legal, cultural and even ethical dimensions. Everyone missed the substance- because Somizi being a celebrity resulted in the story not being seriously paused over. His celebrity status and larger than life personality got in the way of a story that an editor might otherwise have assigned to a senior legal reporter, for example. Let me help you out. Have a listen to this episode, and share it with your mates before you debate the issues I explain and frame for public engagement - no pun on 'public engagement'!
Business Unity South Africa president Bonang Mohale joined Eusebius McKaiser to discuss his recent opinion piece (https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2022-12-15-the-anc-cannot-fix-itself-south-africas-last-hope-is-business/ ) in which he argued the ANC cannot fix itself. Instead, he is of the view business is South Africa's last hope. The discussion starts with an analysis of the ANC's recent elective conference. McKaiser invited Mohale to comment on the new leadership composition of the top seven officials, and the party's highest decision-making structure, the national executive committee. Mohale argued that the inefficient manner in which the elective conference was run, and the strategic error of allocating most of the time to leadership elections rather than to a deep examination of ideas and policies, is evidence of an ANC that is unable to fix itself. He expanded on this diagnosis in the conversation with podcast host, TimesLIVE contributor and analyst McKaiser.

Mohale Motaung admits he's been overwhelmed with mixed emotions since finally speaking up about what transpired in his relationship with his estranged husband Somizi Mhlongo. “The most important thing for me was for me to tell my story in a way I see fit.” He's received a lot of responses from people who have related to his story, which he says has been a way of healing for him since breaking his silence. Despite legal documents drawn up by their legal teams binding them from speaking about their separation, Mohale said he was encouraged to speak after he saw his estranged husband continuously mention his name on his reality show. “What it means for me to be Black and queer and trans or non-binary or all of these names make me legible I suppose in a western framework of gender and sexuality. But increasingly the longer that I'm here and the deeper I ask myself further and more ancestral questions about identity and sexuality and desire and kinship, the more those categories dissolve. But I cannot ignore the political reality of needing to be visible and legible to my own community (…) I know that there were poets and artists and queer people and trans people in my life that made me feel possible, because they identified themselves and lived in public ways and published obviously pursuant to all kinds of issues of safety and openness and visibility and representation. I really want to be the kind of person that makes other people feel possible. That makes other divine, beautiful, complicated, gorgeous queer young Black babies feel like they have, and can, and must carve their own space and take up their own space in the world, on the continent, in the country everywhere.”

Mind over murder: The HBO true crime docuseries Mind Over Murder chronicles the bizarre story of six individuals who were convicted for the 1985 murder of beloved 68-year-old grandmother Helen Wilson.

People aged 50 and older are now eligible for an additional booster shot of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, the national health department has announced. The additional booster will be available, as of Monday, to anyone in this age group who has completed at least 120 days or four months since receiving their last Covid-19 vaccination of either a Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine. Previously, South Africans were eligible to receive one booster shot after their primary vaccination of either one dose of J&J, or two doses of Pfizer. "This is part of efforts by the government to increase vaccine uptake to achieve population immunity while protecting the most vulnerable groups, especially those living with co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension," said health department spokesperson Foster Mohale. "The Pfizer vaccine has shown to be safe and effective for boosting immunity in older persons who remain at highest risk of severe disease and death from Covid-19," he added. Out of a total adult population of almost 20-million who have been vaccinated so far, more than seven million of them are aged 50 and older. "We applaud older people for coming forward in large numbers, and we encourage all individuals who have not had their second dose or booster dose to go to their nearest vaccination site," said Mohale. In addition, the department has collaborated with health organisations, such as Right to Care, to launch the app FindMyJab.co.za, which will make it easier for anyone to find the closest vaccination site online.

The Department of Health has asked the public to be patient as it prepares to officially launch the first version of the Covid-19 vaccination digital certificate later this week. On Tuesday, various media reported that the digital certificate website went live, without an official announcement from the Department of Health. Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the Department of Health would roll out vaccine certificates which could be used as proof of vaccination for those wishing to travel or access certain establishments. Departmental spokesperson Foster Mohale said government is currently at the testing phase of the system to troubleshoot all possible glitches ahead of the official launch later this week. He explained that the system is not officially live for vaccinated members of the public to access and download their certificates. However, he said the department is aware that a few individuals have successfully managed to access the system and download their vaccination certificates. Mohale added that a lot of security has been built into the system to protect individuals' personal data. “The development and release of fully-fledged Covid-19 vaccination certificates will be phased-in over time. Thus, we request members of the public to exercise patience while we implement the final refinement as we prepare to officially launch the first version of the Covid-19 vaccination digital certificate,” he said.
As the country experiences a little bit more freedom with the easing from level three lockdown to level 2, Business Unity South Africa says it has confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa to rescue the country from the deep economic slump it is currently facing. Many role players have expressed the believe that South Africa should return to level 1 to give the economy and especially sectors like the tourism and hospitality sector.

“A collection of stories about nobodies who discover that they matter.” This is how Mohale Mashigo described her latest offering, Intruders, in one newspaper interview. While this is true, Intruders is also an ode to the stories that coloured many of our childhoods, like the Veras we were all warned about as children late at night. Mohale has rejected the label of Afrofuturism and aptly demonstrated why not only in these 12 brilliant short stories but also in the recording of this podcast. These stories are powerful with so much suspense created that even on social media there have been persistent calls for the standalone version of a few of them. (We see Y'all). The short story as a gesture is often not applauded for the dexterity and technical skill that is actually required but throughout this book, we see an apt demonstration of this. There's a resurgent interest in the art of the short story and the Intruders is one such example. Following the incredible success of The Yearning, readers everywhere have been hounding Mohale for a second book, true to form. She didn't disappoint. The Intruders is the sophomore book we deserved. Brave, rooted both in the past and present and gives such a glimpse of the future, it is a commentary on the ills which plague society as it holds a mirror through the urban legends we've accumulated but seen through new eyes. The Cheeky Natives sat down with Mohale Mashigo to discuss her latest book in a live podcast that is both serious and thought-provoking while equally humorous and joyful. There was an air of nostalgia as Mohale took us back to our childhoods in ways we'd previously not thought of. This discussion was one for the ages.
