“I was very lucky to enter publishing in the 90s when there was a black books boom,” said novelist Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep, The Good House). “Genre had an easier road for me than if I had tried to enter publishing as a horror writer, as a black woman, previously.” “Comparatively, I was a Johnny-come-lately because I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer until I was about eight,” joked author Steven Barnes (Tennyson Hardwick mystery series). “I started publishing in the 1980s—published 30 novels—and worked in television and film.” “What drove me to writing was a love of storytelling and making connection with people. Reading my stories aloud to groups and watching the groups respond emotionally convinced me this was the path that I wanted to walk,” added Barnes. Due and Barnes, along with Ira Madison III, Geoffrey Thorne, and Mohale Mashigo, make up the writing team behind the new audiobook and e-book series Marvel’s Black Panther: Sins of the King, the latest extension of the Marvelverse. In Black Panther: Sins of the King, the story follows as an army of undead threatens Wakanda, and the Black Panther turns to his long-lost father in the fight against his most lethal opponent yet—the demons of his past. Today I am reviewing short stories by Mohale Mashigo and all I can say is that Mohale has gained a fan. I really hope you will enjoy this one.
Mohale Mashigo describes her relationship with time, imagining a future inflected by apartheid, and her controversial Afrofuturism essay.
I have a great chat with Author & Comic Book Writer Mohale Mashigo & Comic Illustrator Karl Mostert. Mohale shares how she got to work on The Black Panther Series - The Sin of the King. She gives her thoughts on the Black Panther "sequel" and how she convinced the Kwezi team to have her be part of South Africa's first black super hero comic book. Kwazi is a uniquely South African comic, set in the vibrant city of Johannesburg. Karl shares the story of when he knew he wanted to be an illustrator and how terrible he was at drawing. He shares how he got to work for DC and if he named one of his daughters after a superhero. Karl is an avid gamer and draws inspiration from it.Support the show (https://paypal.me/letspodcast?locale.x=en_US)

Your local bookstore will definitely stock ‘Harry Potter', but when it comes to South African kids' books featuring children of colour, all bets are off. The local publishing industry admits there's a big problem - but just how big, nobody knows. In this episode, we speak to local writers Buhle Ngaba and Mohale Mashigo about the crisis in representation that led to them creating their own work for South African children. Pan MacMillan publishers Miemie du Plessis and Sibongile Machika talk frankly about the issues - and also argue that the publishing industry is not entirely to blame. Don't Shoot the Messenger is produced by Haji Mohamed Dawjee and presented by Rebecca Davis with editing by Tevya Turok Shapiro, original theme music by Bernard Kotze and additional support by Kathryn Kotze.

“A collection of stories about nobodies who discover that they matter.” This is how Mohale Mashigo described her latest offering, Intruders, in one newspaper interview. While this is true, Intruders is also an ode to the stories that coloured many of our childhoods, like the Veras we were all warned about as children late at night. Mohale has rejected the label of Afrofuturism and aptly demonstrated why not only in these 12 brilliant short stories but also in the recording of this podcast. These stories are powerful with so much suspense created that even on social media there have been persistent calls for the standalone version of a few of them. (We see Y'all). The short story as a gesture is often not applauded for the dexterity and technical skill that is actually required but throughout this book, we see an apt demonstration of this. There's a resurgent interest in the art of the short story and the Intruders is one such example. Following the incredible success of The Yearning, readers everywhere have been hounding Mohale for a second book, true to form. She didn't disappoint. The Intruders is the sophomore book we deserved. Brave, rooted both in the past and present and gives such a glimpse of the future, it is a commentary on the ills which plague society as it holds a mirror through the urban legends we've accumulated but seen through new eyes. The Cheeky Natives sat down with Mohale Mashigo to discuss her latest book in a live podcast that is both serious and thought-provoking while equally humorous and joyful. There was an air of nostalgia as Mohale took us back to our childhoods in ways we'd previously not thought of. This discussion was one for the ages.
South African writer Mohale Mashigo talks about her work on her novel The Yearning, how she got to work on South Africa’s first comic superhero Kwezi, writing a book from a movie as well as a few writers she recommends.
Our ability to own and tell our stories enables us power to process, grow and create community and solidarity. In this episode, Ché chats with Jen Thorpe a writer, researcher, and feminist. We talk about the power of women owning their sexuality, sharing their stories and the bravery and vulnerability required to do so. Jen shares the insights she’s gained on collecting stories from a diversity of women and cultures on the topic of “my first time” to what it means to be a feminist and why it’s important for women to have their voices heard. Following the success of her first novel “The Peculiars”, Jen is busy working on her second novel and she shares some of her creative processes and tools for getting out of “creative-stuckness”. In the wise words of Warsan Shire, 'If were going to heal, let it be glorious'
