As fans and friends gather in Johannesburg to honour songbird Zahara, some fellow stars admitted “we've been unkind to Zahara”. Popularly known as Zahara, Bulelwa Mkutukana, died on Monday evening after being admitted to a Johannesburg hospital just over two weeks ago with liver complications. On Thursday a memorial service was held for her at the Rhema Church in Randburg, in northwest Johannesburg. Stars reflected on the late star's life. Media personality Somizi Mhlongo recalled how he first met Zahara and apologised for a joke he made about her during the South African Music Awards. Somizi had implied Zahara was already at the bar (drinking) at the SAMA after party. "Spinach", as Zahara was known by those who she grew up with, was the most awarded artist in the country. Her albums sold like hot cakes. At the age of 21, Zahara composed her most popular song Loliwe. When she released her debut album in 2011, which went platinum in 13 days and double platinum in 17, selling 100,000 copies, she won the hearts of many South Africans and people beyond the country's borders.

Are you confused that Somizi and Mohale were never married? "How so?", you may have asked yourself. Are you also confused as to why Somizi, rather than Mohale, is the one who wanted to sustain the claim that there WAS a valid marriage in place? After all, wouldn't Somizi, more than Mohale, be excited to know there was no valid marriage in place? If Mohale is the alleged gold digger, why wouldn't Somizi be happy to accept that they were not spouses?! Confused? Let me help you out. I do two things in this episode: a) answer these questions AND (far more importantly) b) I will persuade you why this is NOT a silly celebrity gossip story but a fascinating story with curious and important legal, cultural and even ethical dimensions. Everyone missed the substance- because Somizi being a celebrity resulted in the story not being seriously paused over. His celebrity status and larger than life personality got in the way of a story that an editor might otherwise have assigned to a senior legal reporter, for example. Let me help you out. Have a listen to this episode, and share it with your mates before you debate the issues I explain and frame for public engagement - no pun on 'public engagement'!
Cancel culture has led to the cancellation of several South African celebrities for various reasons, so it should not be surprising that Gareth Cliff and Unathi Nkayi are on that list. In our first episode, media personality Unathi has a candid conversation with Gareth in front of a live audience, about everything you've ever wanted to know! She talks extensively about how she was fired from KayaFM, and how her family encouraged her to sue the station. She also reveals the real reason for the breakdown of her friendship with Somizi, and we get a glimpse of the incredible relationship she has with her father. This is the podcast where we uncancel culture - #unCancelled. www.cliffcentral.com

The video of the conversation is currently doing the rounds on social media.
