In the 1950s, a strange story emerged about a ship called the USS Eldridge docked at a naval shipyard in Philadelphia. According to a man aboard another ship docked nearby, in October of 1948 the hull of the Eldridge suddenly glowed an eery blueish green and then the entire ship disappeared, became invisible. But that's not all. After it turned invisible, it then suddenly teleported 300 miles away to another naval shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia and back. The crew aboard the Eldridge reportedly suffered ill effects, disorientation, burns, and some of them even had body parts fused to the hull of the ship. This witness, a man named Carl Allen or sometimes Carlos Allende, claimed that what he had seen was a top secret government experiment gone wrong, an experiment that had been covered up ever since. But what was the Philadelphia Experiment really - a government conspiracy or a hoax turned urban legend? The “Philadelphia Experiment” was allegedly a military project involving the USS Eldridge DE-173 destroyer, in which invisibility cloaking, teleportation of the vessel, and other uncanny events occurred. - In 1955, Morris K. Jessup (an author, astronomer, and ufologist) received letters from Carlos M. Allen, who claimed he witnessed bizarre secret military operations during WWII at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. These claims were not corroborated at the time, but the plot thickened in 1957… - In 1957, the Office of Naval Research received a peculiar, annotated version of one of Morris K. Jessup's books from an anonymous source, and contacted Jessup. Jessup's book, “The Case for the UFO”, had strange notes written throughout it that alleged strange claims relating to the Philadelphia Experiment and advanced technology. The notes in the margins, appeared to be written by extraterrestrials… - Morris K. The Philadelphia Experiment is an alleged military experiment supposed to have been carried out by the U.S. Navy at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sometime around October 28, 1943. The U.S. Navy destroyer escort USS Eldridge was claimed to have been rendered invisible (or "cloaked") to enemy devices.The story first appeared in 1955, in letters of unknown origin sent to a writer and astronomer, Morris K. Jessup. Mark Ashton, Morris K. Jessup Professor of Silviculture and Forest Ecology and Director of the School Forests, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, provides a historical overview of forest management and land use. Professor Ashton discusses the changing uses of forests and how cycles of industrialization, degradation, rehabilitation and sustainability are affected by changing capitalization values. He also traces the beginnings of scientific forestry in Europe and America, and notes the strategies that forest managers and policymakers may use in the future.
