In 2017, Elon Musk laid out plans to build a permanent colony on Mars -- one with at least a million human inhabitants. What would this colony look like? How would it work? Most importantly, could we use a Martian colony as an opportunity to improve on the socioeconomic practices of Earth? To find these answers, Ben, Matt and Noel went to the smartest guy they know: Marshall Brain, the founder of HowStuffWorks and author of "Imagining Elon Musk's Million-Person Mars Colony."They don't want you to read our book.: https://static.macmillan.com/static/fib/stuff-you-should-read/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's important to follow the basic steps to determine where to build your bonfire, use proper materials (not flammable liquids), keep at a safe distance, and put out before walking away. There are a lot of good video tutorials online for how to build a quality bonfire. I found a couple of step by step lists at WikiHow (https://www.wikihow.com/Have-a-Bonfire) and How Stuff Works (https://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-make-bonfire-in-your-backyard.htm). We've all heard of the Blue Moon of Kentucky thanks to Elvis Presley, Kentucky Blue Grass, and Kentucky Blue is even a color of paint... But this is an entirely different type of blue; The Blue Fugates. They are a family with a rare blood disorder called methemoglobinemia. It can cause blue skin, and boy did it. Four of their seven children exhibited blue skin so the family retreated from society... and inbred over and over until they became world renowned for this hue. What happened to them? Can it be treated?  And how can you turn yourself blue from the comfort of your own home? We answer those questions and many even crazier this from the preverbal cornucopia of weird, Kentucky. Special thanks to this week's sources:Cover Art By;Joshua LernerBooks and ArticlesHereditary Diaphorase Deficiency and Methemoglobinemia - https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/570011The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek | Kim Michele RichardsonBlue-Skinned Gods | S. “THE WEREWOLF: LORE, LEGEND, AND LYCANTHROPY” #WeirdDarknessClick here to find Weird Darkness in your favorite podcast app: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness IN THIS EPISODE: The idea of the werewolf has been with us for a long time – the first mention of a werewolf that we know of is over two thousand years ago. We'll look at the origins of the werewolf, look at whether they are actually real, and if so, how one goes about becoming one, and some of the cures believed to release the man from the beast. Of course, it's not always the Wolf-Man… sometimes it's the Wolf-Woman. We'll look at the most fearsome lady werewolves throughout history! I'll tell you about the trials and punishments of those convicted of being werewolves – many probably wish they'd have confessed to being witches instead! Plus, what if I was to tell you that werewolves truly ARE real – and that a small village has been terrorized by them for decades – right up to modern day? There is convincing evidence to back up my claim! “THE REAL SHARK ATTACKS BEHIND ‘JAWS'” and More True SHARK Stories! #WeirdDarknessClick here to find Weird Darkness in your favorite podcast app: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness Do you consider Stephen Spielberg's JAWS a horror movie? Let us know in the comments on this Facebook post - and tell us what the scariest scene was for you: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/bpacmhz5 IN THIS EPISODE: In June of 1975 we were exposed to one of the scariest movies ever made. For this podcaster, it's just not Independence Day until I watch it – and you still can't get me to swim in the ocean. We'll look at what made ‘Jaws' so successful… and so frightening. We'll also look at the true story of a string of shark attacks in 1916 that inspired the novel and the film. And while 1975's ‘Jaws' was inspired by a series of shark attacks but greatly fictionalized, the film ‘Open Water' from 2003 is based on a very real and terrifying story. But the truth behind the movie is a dark mystery that goes way beyond the horror of what you see in the film. We'll look at several other real shark attacks that are almost too incredible to believe, and also try to answer the question as to why shark attacks don't happen more often as you would expect them to, seeing as humans should be easy pickings.(Dark Archives episode from July 03, 2020)SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…“The True Darkness of Open Water” by Erin McCann for Ranker: https://tinyurl.com/y8vaqgra “The Real-Life Inspiration for ‘Jaws'” by Christopher Klein for History: https://tinyurl.com/yb5s35xc “The Horror of ‘Jaws'” by Jackie Flynn Mogensen for Mother Jones: https://tinyurl.com/y2mxf8us, Andrew Housman for ScreenRant: https://tinyurl.com/yae8ohh6, Meagan Navarro for Bloody Disgusting: https://tinyurl.com/y7p8q9lw, Tim Donnelly for the New York Post: https://tinyurl.com/y9twrcc7, and Rachel Paige for Hello Giggles: https://tinyurl.com/ycdlb6je“Real Shark Attacks” by Charles W. Hello, kaiju lovers! Our season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, “creeps and leaps and slides and glides” along when MIFV MAX member Eric Anderson joins Nate to discuss 1958's The Blob. This was Steve McQueen's debut as a 30-year-old teenager dating the future TV wife of Andy Griffith. This classic of 1950s sci-fi cinema was an independent film produced by a studio known for making religious and educational films, which makes it doubly appropriate that the founder of Nerd Chapel (who's also a substitute teacher) is on today's episode. Being an influential indie film is also probably why, believe it or not. it's in the Criterion Collection. The Toku Topic is a phenomenon related to the true story that inspired this kooky film: star jelly. Check out all things Nerd Chapel here: http://nerdchapel.com/. The “See the Goo” promo was written by The Monster Island Board of Directors. The epilogue, “Ozaki's Message,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Additional music: “The Blob” by The Five Blobs “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo “Numbness & Knives” by HoboKa Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ. Check out Nathan's spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. We'd like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, Eric Anderson of Nerd Chapel, and Ted Williams! Hey there everyone! This highly requested episode is all about Mindfulness, Mediation, and living in the present. These practices are good for your mind and body, and definitely help with lucid dreaming! I talk a lot about Buddhism in this episode, and I hope I did so respectfully and correctly! I want to make sure the religion gets the credit it deserves for refining and popularizing these ideas globally as we understand them in the USA. I think Mindfulness is something everyone should practice more of, and I hope you feel more knowledgeable about it after listening to this episode! Thank you to HowStuffWorks for their article on Meditation, and the Verywell Health article "Breathing Exercises for Anxiety." Dream On! Oh my god, I have so many elderly meandering things to ask you and tell you… so many things I don't understand. A couple of items I found interesting in the past couple of weeks regarding some minor events we've experienced, mainly what I'm hearing is the first war in Europe since WWII.  A couple of things: On the day Russia invaded Ukraine I heard a story on NPR, one of my main news sources along with the Associated Press, Reuters and The Wall Street Journal.  In this NPR story, which I could not find later, the reporter in Ukraine was asked how citizens were handling it on the first day.  She said “humor”.  She said the usual tensions of day to day life seemed to dissipated and that there were more Ukranians helping each other.  Particularly helping the elderly with their supplies… helping them carry groceries and assisting with finding bomb shelters and that there was a sense of quiet unity.  I found that sort of hopeful and very cool. Another NPR story which I did find the link to and so will you at the bottom of this description, is regarding US Military intelligence for Ukraine that was being delayed and therefore was not nearly as valuable, because of attorneys.  The interview is with  Republican Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse who is on the Senate Intelligence Committee.  Yes, it sounds like an oxymoron, but let's leave that alone for now.   Also, while we're on Ukraine can we talk about how to pronounce it's capital, Kiev. I always thought it was Kiyev.  In fact I thought it was a different city, but then I found out it wasn't so I thought it was like Niche.  Remember when the word niche was pronounced niTCH? But then I wasn't fancy enough to have a nitch and I had to have a niche.  So I left my niTCH in Key-yev.  Actually there's more to it.  Key-yev   But this episode is about my guest… my college senior and the value of learning to write, to convey a thought and support an argument or position.  Isn't there a thing called a position paper?   My senior mentions writing in MLA.. MLA style refers the style recommended by the Modern Language Association (MLA) for preparing scholarly manuscripts and student research papers. It concerns itself with the mechanics of writing, such as punctuation, quotation, and, especially, documentation of sources.  The “Modern” Language Association was Founded in 1883.   How that makes it modern? I have no idea.  Maybe the same thing that makes this moron modern. Do you remember doing research papers and having to have a bibliography… and citing sources?  Remember ibid?  I remember using that a lot so I had to re-look it up and ibid is when you're using the same source but a different section, so you just put ibid… I-B-I-D which is latin for in the same place —used to indicate that a reference is from the same source as a previous reference.  Which you probably already knew… and proceeded to forget, like me. We talk about studying art and applying techniques vs. studying art history and studying techniques.  Also how most artists that create art piece together their career and their income.  Most artists at one time or another teach art.  I've heard the expression, “those that can't do, teach”, which is utter horse manure.  Most artists, in addition to creating art, teach or find commercial applications for their art.  You've heard of actors who do one film “for the studios” and for the money, so they can take smaller roles or roles in smaller independent films for art's sake.  In the art  world not everyone can become a Takashi Murakami, Jenny Saville, David Hockney or Yayoi Kusama.  And to those iconic names you're probably saying, who said what now? No, I've never heard of any of those artists either but apparently they are among 10 artists you should know about.  There is a link to the article at the bottom of the description. We get back to our discussion about mental health and the growth that occurs between freshman and senior year of both high school and college.  More wisdom from youth and my college senior on the Modern Moron… thanks for listening.   CLOSE - What better way to conclude an episode about art than to talk about the Simpsons and Bob's Burgers.  Like most shows I was way late to the party when it comes to Bob's Burgers.  My daughter and I watch it and it does crack me up.  And if you appreciate the aesthetics of different animation styles you really should watch episode 1 of the 8th season of Bob's Burgers.  Some refer to it as a “fan-imation” episode where non professional animators were allowed to animate a scene of the show.  I really enjoyed it and again it is the first episode of season 8 called “Brunchsquatch”. Thank you to my guest and an early congratulations on her graduation in just a couple months!  Now… it is a rare occasion where I actually know who my next guest is and can promote it and I have a pretty great guest coming up next time. Are  you familiar with the Netflix show “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window”?  It was on Netflix's top 10 when it first came out, and has received some great reviews.  It is a satire of the psychological thriller, keep that in mind when you watch.  My GUEST is one of the creators of the show along with being one of the writers and producers.  He has been on the show before when he was writing for the animated show Mike Tyson's Mysteries, an episode that included an interesting story about Mike Tyson and it's our most downloaded episode!  Of course I'm talking about Larry Dorf.  He's my guest next time, I'm very excited, so stay tuned… to the Modern Moron. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA covered on "Stuff You Should Know" Podcast, published by Jonah Boucher on March 4, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Stuff You Should Know - hosted by Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant from HowStuffWorks.com - is regularly a top ten downloaded podcast and has over one million weekly downloads. Today they posted the episode called “How Effective Altruism Works” with this description: A branch of philanthropy led by philosophers is dedicated to finding the most impactful ways to help humans survive and thrive. Anyone can find that agreeable, but it can be tough to hear it also means your donations to local charities are kind of a waste. The episode is 54 minutes long with introduction, breaks, and listener mail taking up 12 minutes. Listening at 1.5 speed it would take about 30 minutes. Below is an ~7 minute read summarizing their conversation with timestamps. Note: I lightly edited direct quotes for clarity 3:45 Introduction. They reference their recent Short Stuff: Charity Tips episode (which heavily featured GiveWell), but note how some of their advice from that episode conflicts with what Chuck says EA recommends: “The only way you should give is just by coldly calculating what would help a human the most on planet earth.” Josh notes, “It is a very polarizing idea if you just take it at its bare bones.if everybody would just move past the most extreme parts of it and just take EA at its most middle ground.it would be really difficult to disagree with the ideas behind it.” Josh says it's the associations with Peter Singer and “silicon valley billionaires” that get people all riled up. 6:13 A few things that “EA is,” according to Chuck: 1) A lot of good can be done with money. 2) If you can provide for yourself, you should probably be giving to charity. 3) You can literally save human lives. Josh defines Quality Adjusted Life Years and highlights that “basically everybody living in the US can afford to give 10% of their income and forgo some clothes or some cars to help other people literally survive. So right off the bat we've reached levels of discomfort for the average person that are really tough to deal with. That's the first challenge that EAs have to do: Tamp down the overwhelming sense of guilt and responsibility and shame at not doing that.” 8:38 History and main organizations. EA “took hold in 2010.” They reference the Center for Effective Altruism and say Toby Ord and Will Macaskill founded Giving What We Can to start the movement. Then they mention Benjamin Todd and 80,000 Hours, The Life You Can Save, and Animal Charity Evaluators. Josh speaks very highly of Toby Ord based on how Ord's work influenced his 2018 podcast project The End of the World with Josh Clark about existential risks. 11:20 Will Macaskill's core commitments of EA: 1) Maximizing the good (“Which we can all pretty much get on board with”) 2) Aligning your ideas/contributions to science with evidence rather than your heart (“A tough one for people to swallow.”) 3) Welfarism. 4) Impartiality (“That's a tough one.harder for people to swallow than science alignment.”) They note that out of $470B Americans donate annually, only $25.9B goes outside of America. Chuck says that the idea of EA is to “shatter your way of thinking about trying to help the people in your city or state or country and to look at every human life as having equal value. And not even human life, but every life!” Josh adds, “If #4 holds, then, from a strict EA perspective you are wasting your money if you are an American donating it in America. A dollar can do exponentially more in poverty stricken parts of the world than it can in the United States.” He laments, “It's just a huge jagged pill that they are asking people to swallow, but if you can step back from it, what they are ultimately saying is ‘Look man, you want t...
