A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Based in London, Emma Hardy is well practiced in capturing the nuances of everyday life. Her images reflect an often unnoticed drama behind the scenes. Coming from a theatrical background and having worked as an actress herself before focusing on photography, Emma cites her fascination with people's behaviour, the tensions, interactions and quirky humour, as a driving energy in her work.Mainly self-taught, Emma photographs on film, simply, with natural or available light, stating “I try not to impose much technique or too much of myself on my subjects.” As such, there's a hallmark honesty to her work. Her images are infused with a believable sense of being, her portraits are intimate and unselfconscious. Tilda Swinton, Natalia Vodianova, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Stella McCartney have sat for her, among others. She started photographing portraits, documents and fashion for British Vogue, The Telegraph magazine, Vanity Fair, The Fader, The New York Times and Rolling Stone, among many others, and had her first solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2006 with a project titled Exceptional Youth.  Other exhibitions in London, New York and Milan followed, and she was invited to photograph a series of portraits for the London 2012 Olympics, again featured at the National Portrait Gallery. Thirty-nine of her portraits are in the permanent collection at the NPG London. In 2012 she was commissioned by Oxfam & The Economist to travel to Cambodia to document the citizens of Phnom Penh who were battling the governments land grabs—this series became an exhibition in London in 2013 titled Losing Ground, the exhibition travelled to Washington DC where the images were used as a lobbying tool to help the Cambodian situation onto the G8 summit list.Permissions, Emma's first monograph, was published by Gost Books in November 2022.  Some of the images were exhibited at 1014 Gallery in Dalston, London, December 2022 - January 2023.Describing her aesthetic as raw but tender, Emma finds beauty in imperfection, and polish in the detail of everyday life. And through her lens, the most ordinary moments seem steeped in romance and intrigue, as if her subjects are characters in a movie playing in her head.On episode 200, Emma discusses, among other things:Is art more pure if it's done for the joy of it?Beauty and lyricismChildhood feelings of being an outsiderTaking pictures of her children from an early ageTrying to transmit how she felt in her workThe inclusion of still lifes of flowersWhy she started to photograph her mumThe issue of permission and consentHow the way she shot changed over timeReferenced:Nan GoldinRichard BillinghamNick WaplingtonVivian Maier4000 Weeks by Oliver BurkemanStuart SmithStephen Ledger-LomasNiall Sweeney Website | Instagram“When things line up, when life or the universe says ‘I've got something I can show you. Are you ready? ARE you ready?' And you might be ready, and you might catch this thing that is shown to you. And that's incredibly beautiful. And the times that that has happened I was very aware of it. Like, my whole body started fizzing.”

I wanted to interview Alisa Volskaya, the founder of the public relations firm AVEC, for a few reasons. First of all, every time I would bump into her at a fashion show or event, our conversations about the state of the industry, future trends, and fashion in general always went well past surface chit-chat. Secondly, I was impressed by her drive and third, it just takes a lot of guts to launch a PR company during a moment when that field is in the middle of such a paradigm shift. Not to mention doing it in 2020, the year the world stood still. Alisa started out her career working at Condé Nast International in Paris and was in charge of the fashion publishing house’s digital projects and partnerships. In 2015, she became the Executive Director at Naked Heart France, a charity founded by the top model and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova, where she was in charge of international fundraising and partnerships. Then just five years later, she decided to go out on her own and launch her firm AVEC. Alisa’s PR philosophy is right there in the name of her business - AVEC. She sees the work that she does for brands like Chaumet, Ralph Lauren, Chopard, and Balmain as a real partnership. One where her role is to be there with the companies every step of the way in their strategy journey, from conception to completion. But what exactly does that mean in the post-pandemic, social media-centric metaverse world we now inhabit? Alisa, just like every other time I have spoken with her, had some insightful and sometimes surprising answers.

Education For AllLockdown was hard for everyone but what we don’t hear about are the stories of those who faced starvation and destitution, simply because they couldn’t go to school. This was the situation faced by students of the Malaika school in the Democratic Republic of Congo only a few months ago. The school, founded 13 yrs by model and philanthropist Noella Coursaris Musunka provides a free and holistic education to 370 girls from the ages of 5-18. Before the school, the village had no water, electricity or healthcare, but since then it not only has a school and community centre, but 20 wells providing clean water. As well as this they provide sports programmes, adult vocational skills and IT classes to around 5200 people. So you can see that this is a much needed and impactful programme.Women Supporting WomenPost lockdown there is a lot of work to be done. Malaika have partnered with rental platform Hurr to raise much needed awareness and funds for the school and community. I was incredibly lucky to get to speak to Noella and Victoria, the CEO and Co Founder of Hurr on the day the campaign launched. Wear to Care offers renters an opportunity to rent pieces donated by incredible celebrities including Helena Christensen, Thandie Newton, June Sarpong, Eve and Natalia Vodianova, as well as brands such as Vilshenko, Roland Mouret and Roksanda. All the money raised goes directly to the school. Not only that but Hurr are using the amazing community that they have fostered around their peer to peer rental service to encourage women to sponsor girls at the school. The campaign seeks to highlight the power of female friendship and the importance of empowering each other through knowledge, finance and holistic support. We all know that when young girls are given these things, their potential to thrive is improved exponentially. We hope you feel uplifted and inspired by our conversation with these two amazing women. With thanks to our inspiring guests, Noëlla Coursaris Musunka and Victoria PrewMentioned in the episodeMalaika SchoolHurrCharlie CollinsVideo of girlsHurr InstagramMalaika InstagramPlease Support The Vendeur & Join Our CommunityInstagramFacebookPinterestSeries Credits Host Lucy KebbellTheme created by Joe Murgatroyd

Creative Conversations with Suzy Menkes

In episode seven of Creative Conversations, Suzy is joined by the philanthropist and supermodel, Natalia Vodianova. Her story is a fairy tale – with a mighty dollop of reality and grit. Growing up in Russia, she helped her mother sell fruit in the market; looked after her sister, who has special needs; and hobbled through a childhood in which her family could not afford to buy new shoes for her growing feet. Then, as in all the best stories, she became a model in her teens, married a British aristocrat, and was all set for her happy ever after. It was during the terrible Beslan massacre, when terrorists seized a Russian school, when she had the realisation that her life – glamorous but empty – needed an opportunity to give back. Her new path of philanthropy was born with the Naked Heart Foundation, which she established to build playgrounds and parks for abandoned, orphaned, disabled and special needs children across Russia and giving hope and support to despairing families.Photographed by the world’s greatest talents and still in demand as a perennial supermodel, Natalia’s Fabulous Fund Fairs continue to support children in need, while other energetic projects include co-founding the Elbi app, for micro donations to a host of charities, and Flo – a women’s health platform.Natalia met her fiancé, Antoine Arnault, on the set of a 2008 Louis Vuitton campaign. They plan to marry this summer, Coronavirus willing. She is looking after the kids’ role in the party, while Antoine is arranging the grown-up aspects. And the wedding dress? Natalia confided in me the inspiration behind the design, but you will have to listen to this podcast to find out exactly what!Produced by Natasha Cowan.Edited by Tim Thornton.Music by @joergzuber.Graphics by Paul Wallis.Production Assistance by Lauren Sweeting.Support for the Creative Conversations podcast comes from the Condé Nast Luxury Conference. To find Suzy's articles visit vogue.co.uk/fashion/suzy-menkes ...find Suzy on Instagram @suzymenkes and Twitter @thesuzymenkes
