In today's episode, John Shaner takes us into the Catskills area and describes the flies, the people, and the history of these famous waters. We also dig into some of the famous hatches of the East, and we get a full scoop on the people, the places, and what makes this all unique and historic. Plus, we hear stories about the legendary Theodore Gordon. It can't get any better than this! Tune in now. Catskills Fly Fishing Show Notes with John Shaner 03:54 - John tells us how he first got into fly fishing. 04:39 - John shares insights on the reasons behind the prominence of Catskills in fly fishing, but he believes the Catskills is not the birthplace of fly fishing in the US, even though some may disagree. 08:01 - John has a connection with the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, and they recently reviewed the fly collection, gaining insight into the evolution of fly development in the Catskills. John Shaner on Theodore Gordon 08:57 - John discusses Theodore Gordon's role in introducing and popularizing dry flies in the US. 10:17 - Roy Steenrod, Herman Christian, and Rube Cross are some of the people who continued the Catskill dry fly fishing after Gordon died in 1915. 13:35 - While Theodore Gordon is primarily known for fishing in the Neversink, he also had fishing experiences in the Beaverkill and the Limestone Streams of Pennsylvania. 15:03 - In the late 1940s, John McDonald collected Gordon's notes and letters into a book called The Notes and Letters of Theodore Gordon. 16:18 - John is a big George Edward MacKenzie Skues fan. 18:39 - We learn the difference between the English chalk streams and the Catskills. 20:10 - We talk about some big names in Catskills fly fishing, like Ed Van Put and Joan Wulff. In this episode #102 of the FATED Path of Exile podcast, we're joined by Neversink, Lighty and Betta-ahGaming to talk about how our league starts went and what our first impressions of the league were. We covered a lot of aspects, from how the monsters are balanced and how the encounters work to the UI design and rewards. Despite all the negative feedback around this league it's a fun and informative episode, so make sure to check it out! @BigDucks couldn't make it because of IRL circumstances, we'll have him on some other time instead and @Balormage wrecked his sleep schedule for league start but he'll be there next time again! This league start was definitely 'something special'. We had some great newcomers join the league along with some familiar faces. GGG has seen the biggest numbers of any league ever but the league mechanic, despite being an awesome idea at the core was flawed in many ways. We did our best to give objective criticism and constructive feedback! It was great to catch up with everyone and see what they've been up to. We can't wait to see the upcoming patches and what the future holds for Path of Exile, and we hope you all have a great season!Check us out on all podcast platforms (we even have video on Spotify now!) and give us a rating! If you are a market or small-scale farmer, this episode is for you, but there’s plenty of inspiration for you home gardeners too. This week’s guest is Conor Crickmore. About 12 years ago, Conor exchanged a lucrative career in technology for a successful journey to the life of a market farmer. Here’s the real kicker - neither he nor his wife, Kate, had any real gardening or farming experience at the time.
When you talk about American Fly Fishing, the Catskills is one of the of the first places that comes to mind. It was great to connect with John Kovach and Rob Ceccarini of The Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum at the International Fly Tying Symposium. We had a great conversation about the legendary museum that was founded in 1981 and has names like the Darbee’s, the Dette’s and Lee & Joan Wulff. The Museum & Center is a wonderful place located in a magical part of the country, the Catskills. Home of American dry fly fishing, the Catskills is boasts world famous rivers like the Beaverkill, the Willowemoc, the Neversink and the Esopus creek. Rob shares his expertise on the rivers, best tactics and the insect life. John talks about history of the museum, the current events schedule and how, as a center, everyone is welcome to be involved. Today it's Part Two of the series with Conor. As you heard last week, along with his wife Kate, Conor Crickmore is grossing over $350k per year at Neversink Farm in upstate NY. A lot of money for a very small farm, and the amazing thing is, they still think there's room to grow. In today's episode we'll focus more on production as Conor gets into the why and how, of how future growth is possible for Neversink. He'll talk about some of the challenges that he sees many struggling farms facing, and how in many ways the answer to those problems is simplification and standardization. Two base principles that run through everything that they do on the farm. Conor will also discuss in depth the five things that have made their farm as profitable as it is, while simultaneously making their quality of life better. And we not just talking gear here, or buy this or that. Again, it's base principles that have really made Neversink successful, and those base principles are ones that you could apply on your farm today. With that, let's get into it with Conor Crickmore of Neversink Farm. Learn more at www.permaculturevoices.com/farmsmallfarmsmart Support the show at www.permaculturevoices.com/support
Conor Crickmore grosses a little over $350,000 on just over one-and-a-half acres in Claryville, New York, with his wife, Kate. Marketing through farmers markets and restaurant sales, Neversink Farm has developed a reputation for meticulous, thoughtful, and simple production. Conor shares the history of Neversink Farm, including how he simplified production and marketing and increased his income at the same time. We discuss how he and Kate found the time to make decisions and improvements in the hectic and critical early years, and the whys behind the choices and investments they made. We dig into the details of Neversink’s no-tractor production system, and why they’ve eschewed tillage, plastic, and more. Conor tells us the details about how they’ve made everything from weed control and irrigation to harvest and washing the produce easier, and how they relay that information to their employees. Mitch Raczy, Secretary of BAMBA (Berks Area Mountain Biking Association), a chapter of IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association), shares with Zeke the story of the non-profit educational association and its designation as a Bronze-level Ride Center by IMBA. There are only such 37 Ride Centers in the world and Berks is the only Ride Center in Northeast corridor of the U.S. Raczy tells Zeke that BAMBA's mission is to create, enhance and preserve great trail experiences for mountain bikers in Berks County and promote mountain bike access and diverse riding opportunities. BAMBA promotes wellness, fitness and healthy lifestyles for all ages through mountain biking. "BAMBA is an all-volunteer group that takes care of all the trails in Berks," Raczy tells Zeke. “In the 1980’s cyclists found their way up Mount Penn and started riding trails. The challenge of riding up the mountain, over logs and rocks kept them riding. From the 80’s until now trails have been being built on Mount Penn. There are trails for all levels. Reading is a unique setting with two mountains, Mount Penn and Neversink, so close to an urban area. Mountain biking is hard work, a physical sport but you can ride at any pace you want. It’s a great aerobic workout."

Kim Murphy, President of Berks Nature talks with Fred Moreadith, President of BAMBA, (Berks Area Mountain Biking Assoc), about their efforts to maintain biking trails on Neversink Mountain and Mt. Penn. Berks County has 125 miles of single track bike trails and Berks Nature manages 27 miles of those trails. Neversink Mountain Preserve is part of Berks Nature and the collaborative efforts between Berks Nature and the trail maintenance volunteers from BAMBA helped BAMBA attain bronze status and earned Berks County the designation of Ride Center. Berks County is one of only 37 ride centers in the world and the only one in the North East corridor of the United States BAMBA has been an IMBA (International Mountain Biking Assoc) chapter since Dec of 2012 and was able to earn this Ride center status in just 3 short years. They work diligently on trial advocacy, establishing relationships with land managers and raising awareness across the country about Berks bike trails. As a result of this collaboration Berks Nature resurrected the Greater Reading Trails Initiative. Tune in to find out what makes Berks County special enough to earn this designation from IMBA and why it is important to Berks County.
