This week, novelist Adam O'Fallon Price (The Hotel Neversink) joins us to discuss a strange, short novel by Muriel Spark called The Driver's Seat, in which a woman travels to the south of Italy to find someone who will murder her. We talk about the book's detached, somewhat cold point of view, its narrative leaps into the future tense, and just what to make of its odd cast of characters. We also talk to Adam about his relationship to the mystery genre, how his agent talked him out of writing a linked story collection, and why he left his music career to make a life as a writer instead. When you listen to the moral language and rhetoric of our culture today, you less often hear appeals to "personal responsibility" and "rugged individualism" -- and more often claims of "privileges," "disparities" and "oppression." This latter set of ideas, once foreign to American ears, is now popular with those promising "equity" and utopia. Individualism has been accused of being part of the "white" or "patriarchal" system, while top-down collectivist solutions are demanded along with a new social contract. In nearly every case, an idealized concept of collective justice is embedded in the proposed utopia -- along with a rejection of the meritocratic system that has successfully created exponential growth in our civilization. The American way is to be discarded to the ash heap of history. To understand the genesis of this conflict, knowing about Geneva's Jean-Jacques Rousseau is essential. Rousseau's anti-Enlightenment ideology was the ideological inspiration of the Jacobin dictators of the French Revolution. While the American Revolution valued individual liberty and natural rights, the French Revolution demanded equality and collective rights of man. Over the past several months, as the general public has become more aware of the dangers of critical race theory (CRT), proponents of CRT have pulled back from strong positions that they have maintained over the past ten years. Where they had been advocating strongly for CRT, they now have retreated to weaker, more easily defensible positions - even denying that they had ever advocated for CRT in the first place. This “being strong when unquestioned” and then wholly disowning any claims to the strong position by retreating to a weaker position is referred to as the motte & bailey rhetorical strategy or the motte & bailey fallacy. It is a type of strategic equivocation between an easily defended but unrepresentative claim and an indefensible but representative and desired claim. In this in-depth discussion, Dr. James Lindsay explains how the Motte & Bailey position has been skillfully used by politicians, politicians, pastors and corporate CEOs as they seek to shift our civilization to the far left. When most commentators refer to the ideological state that Western civilization finds itself in today, the name most commonly used as the genesis of the rot that has infected our society is Karl Marx. This isn’t wholly wrong, but when an examination of the gradualistic sense of the process which has been used to purposely evolve societal conceptions to the end goal of progressive operational success, the name and the methodologies of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel should immediately come to the forefront of discussion. Join Michael O’Fallon, of Sovereign Nations, and James Lindsay, of New Discourses, for an in-depth discussion of how the Hegelian dialectical process and metaphysics work and slowly drain the color out of life in Western Civilization. Welcome to the launch of Season 6! Jill Devine wanted this week’s guest to be part of the launch of Season 6 because behind the scenes, Lisa Webb approached Jill about being a part of the Supermom Shoutout. Lisa is the Owner & Creator of Addy’s Way! She started her jewelry business in 2010 while living in Houston, Texas. Through the years, and two moves, Addy's Way has continued to grow and change to stay with the current trends. In 2020, they added a new channel to the AW brand, AW Apparel. Lisa asked Jill if she could customize a t-shirt for the Supermoms that get a shout out with the Supermom Shoutout. Being a mom is hard work and Lisa thought these moms needed a visual to remind them they are seen and supported. In this episode, Lisa and Jill talked in detail about the importance of supporting and lifting women up, as well as: *Having someone in your life a season ahead of you *Being a part of the “Sandwich Generation” *Doing the best you can *Choosing to have a good attitude *Listening to what God is teaching and telling you IG: @addysway FB: https://www.facebook.com/addyswayjewelry Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth, so she created the Supermom Shoutout, brought to you by Addy’s Way. Each recipient will receive a custom designed Supermom t-shirt from Addy’s Way, in addition to the Shoutout. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Eryn of O’Fallon, MO. Her friend, Lisa, nominated her and said: It’s my privilege to nominate my amazing friend, Eryn, for the Supermom Shoutout! Eryn is a single mom to Donovan, Giavanna, Cimone & Devereux. I admire how hard she works to provide for her babies. Eryn works all day and runs all night from practice to practice keeping her kids involved in the activities they love. She’s an amazing mom that deserves all the shout outs and recognition she can get! Eryn - YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom.
