“Designed by criminals, for criminals”: Operation Trojan ShieldAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
The Anom was the holy grail of dark, illegal communication: a mobile phone that could send encrypted messages, and even included a secret Kill-Switch to foil attempts by law enforcement agents to get to its contents. Thousands of criminals used the Anom, certain that they were completely safe from the police... They were wrong.
Taking down an international criminal ring isn't easy. They often rely on sophisticated technology to thwart investigators. That same technology was used to take down hundreds of thousands of criminals. In this episode I speak with Tom Whalen, a former Special Agent with the FBI. For the first time, he is discussing Operation Trojan Shield and how the FBI, and other international agencies, used the criminal's technology against them. It should be noted that Tom received permission to discuss this case. In this episode you'll discover: Who and what are transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) What technology were the criminals using How the FBI ended up in possession of the technology How it was used against the criminals Why it's important to question the technology we use – who has access to what information Additional information on this episode is on our website kerskie.com
We were going to talk about the rise in violence on Friday given the incident in Auckland that saw some oik hold a gun to the head of two members of the public after stealing a car from a local car dealership - before we were overwhelmed with stories from farmers and their supporters heading to rallies around the country - and the sad thing is I knew it would only be a matter of time before the topic was in the news again.Another weekend. Another weekend of aggravated assaults, and attacks on police, and liquor stores being robbed, and the rates of gun crime last year being the highest in nearly ten years. And this from a Government that is trying desperately to nurture people and raise them up and from a police commissioner who wants to take a collaborative approach to offending, and who says we can't arrest our way out of the gang problem. And he may well be right. There has to be a two-pronged approach to gangs - I've always said that if kids choose to join a gang, it says more about how ghastly the place they came from is than how attractive the gang is. But according to the same police commissioner, violent criminal behaviour directed at police is ramping up like never before.Andrew Coster's comments came in the wake of the latest assault on police which left an officer with minor injuries. He said policing has always been a dangerous job but there has been an escalation in offenders' willingness to use violence towards police. He said he was unable to put his finger on the reason but he said generally, offenders who attack police are not making the sort of sound decisions that a sober person would.A caller to the show last week wondered if the huge drug bust New Zealand police were involved in, Operation Trojan Shield, could have seen drugs dry up on the street and that might be the reason for rising anger and violence on our streets but really - is mano a mano violence begets violence doesn't work and kindness and compassion doesn't work, what do we have left?
In this episode, Mason Wilder, CFE, ACFE Senior Research Specialist, and Mandy Moody, CFE, ACFE Communications Manager, discuss the "sting of the century." Operation Trojan Shield was a collaboration between the U.S. FBI and DEA, the Swedish and Australian police, Europol and other global organizations to infiltrate an encrypted chat platform. The operation led to 800 arrests, 700 house searches, the seizure of drugs and firearms, and an ongoing list of money laundering revelations.

In this episode of the Stratfor Essentail Geopolitics podcast from RANE, Emily Donahue speaks with Sam Lichtenstein, who is Stratfor director of global security analysts at RANE. A joint sting operation managed by Australia and the U.S. netted hundreds of arrests of organized crime figures. Australia called it a watershed moment. Interpol described it as the "biggest ever law enforcement operation against encrypted communication". Lichtenstein explains the lessons learned and why even a hugely successful operation may have limited effect on organized crime. Sign Up for the Free Stratfor Newsletter from RANE. A Mongrel Mob Waikato leader claims three members charged with serious drug offences are outliers in the chapter. The trio were arrested on Monday, along with 35 others, following 37 police raids as part an FBI-led operation. Operation Trojan Shield has netted hundreds of alleged criminals across the globe after they were caught using a messaging app secretly created and monitored by law enforcement. Paula Ormsby is a member of Waikato-based Mongrel Mob Kingdom and leads its first women's chapter. Police say three Waikato mob members are implicated in Operation Trojan Shield, despite the chapter insisting it's not involved in drug dealing. Our reporter Nick Truebridge asked Paula Ormsby how she explains that contradiction.

A global watchdog for money laundering and terrorist financing has found New Zealand's police do a good job of seizing proceeds of crime. But it did find several shortcomings in their Financial Intelligence Unit, saying it could be more proactive and needs better analytical tools. The unit played a key role in Operation Trojan Shield earlier this week, which resulted in the arrests of 35 people, who have been charged with more than 900 offences. Police reporter Ben Strang told me more about the report.

Operation Trojan Shield has put gangs under the microscope again this week. The question remains, how do we get people out of the gang lifestyle?Billy Macfarlane is a former drug lord who has completely changed his life around, and now runs an offender rehabilitation programme in Rotorua and he told Kate Hawkesby a lot of young gang members could be prevented from entering that life if they had someone show them the negative impacts.“I'd like to see a lot of the older, ex-gang members step forward and promote the problems that exist inside of that lifestyle.”LISTEN ABOVE

More than 800 criminal suspects in 18 nations, including the US, were duped into using an FBI-monitored encryption app to plan their crimes, resulting in a massive organized crime takedown. As Washington Times Justice Department reporter Jeff Mordock reports, authorities in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the US announced the results of Operation Trojan Shield in separate press conferences across the globe. Also, as Jeff reports, the Justice Department announced this week it will now require all federal agents to wear body cameras, reversing a longstanding ban and giving a victory to police accountability activists. Jeff explains to Andy how that will work, why they initially prevented it and where the policy goes from here.
The FBI-led operation that saw the arrests of top gang members in New Zealand is tipped to put almost no dent in the high use of methamphetamine. So far, New Zealand police have arrested 35 people, including senior members of the Comancheros, the Waikato Mongrel Mob and the Head Hunters. Nine hundred charges have been laid and three point seven million dollars worth of assets seized. The police work here forms part of Operation Trojan Shield - a global effort that saw criminals conned into using an messaging app secretly run by the FBI. Jean Bell filed this report.

The head has been knocked off a drug importing beast. That's the take of a gang expert, after New Zealand police carried out raids across the North Island as part of an international sting led by the FBI. So far, 35 people have been arrested, including senior members of the Comancheros, the Waikato Mongrel Mob and the Head Hunters. About 900 charges have been laid and $3.7 million-worth of assets seized - including two boats and more than $1 million in cash. Criminals have also been netted across the globe in what's been called Operation Trojan Shield - after police tricked them into communicating on an app run by the FBI. Jarrod Gilbert, who's the Director of Criminal Justice at the University of Canterbury, reckons gang members will be on edge.
There are suggestions a global sting will shake the psyche of organised crime.Operation Trojan Shield, involving 16 countries, has resulted in the arrest of senior gang members in New Zealand, Australia and other countries.More than 900 charges have been laid here against 35 people. The operation employed tricking alleged criminals into communicating via an FBI encrypted app, called ANOM.Herald senior reporter Jared Savage, the author of Gangland, told Kate Hawkesby those involved in organised crime would have seen encrypted communications as impossible to get into.“Now it's been shown that, there's essentially been an 18-month, long-game trick played on them. I think it will really make people a bit paranoid, there will be people going to ground for a wee while.”LISTEN ABOVE
