Poverty is about more than just meeting basic material needs, says Catherine Thomas. Its corrosive effects are also social and psychological, causing people to feel marginalized and helpless.Thomas's research into anti-poverty programs has focused on the effects of one aimed at women in the West African country of Niger, which aims to support subsistence farmers whose livelihoods are impacted by climate change. One branch of the program involved providing an unconditional $300 cash transfer alongside business and life skills training. Thomas, who is based at the Unversity of Michigan in Ann Arbor, describes the impact it had, compared to similar schemes. These include microfinance business loans, but these tend not to reach those most in need, she says.Thomas's research is very much focused on the first of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere by 2030. Each episode of How to Save Humanity in 17 Goals, a Working Scientist podcast series, features researchers whose work addresses one or more the targets. The first six episodes are produced in partnership with Nature Food, and introduced by Juliana Gil, its chief editor. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We close out season #10 in style as I am joined by a trio of outstanding people, Mitch Laurance, Ross Greenburg, and David Peoples. Mitch Laurance has hosted several fantastic golf podcasts, the most recent is Talking Golf Getaways. He's also one of my favorite people on the planet. Mitch's perspective as a golf Historian is invaluable. He exclusively plays hickory clubs and a golf ball from the 1920s. Rolling the golf back means nothing to him but his perspective on the loss of trust between the PGA Tour and the fans has impacted his desire to watch golf on TV; that is something the PGA Tour should sit up and listen to. We also hear about his experience being in Rome for the Ryder Cup earlier this year and why it seems to mean so much more to the European fans than it does for us in the US. Ross Greenburg is the former President of HBO Sports and is now head of Ross Greenburg Productions. He's produced many of the great films and documentaries of our time. He did 61 with Billy Crystal, Miracle the movie about the 1980 US Hockey team, a series of documentary films for the USGA including the battle between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus at the 1962 US Open at Oakmont, the 1999 US Open won by Payne Stewart, and the 1991 Ryder Cup, the War at the Shore. Ross takes us inside the making of each of those films plus tell us what it was like being in Tokyo for the Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas fight and interviewing both fighters prior to the fight. David Peoples played his college golf at the Unversity of Florida alongside our good friend Mark Calc plus Rick Pearson and Larry Rentz. We get some funny stories of how those guys punished their clubs when they didn't act right, like Rick tying his putter behind the team van and dragging it back to Gainesville, and Larry trying out for the Gator football team. We also hear about David's wins at the 1990 Kapalua Invitational, the '91 Southern Open, and the '92 Anheuser Busch Classic over some legendary fields.

Waddup? I'm joined this episode by Jonathan Higgs from the excellent Everything Everything. The band are from Manchester and formed in 2007. They've so far released 6 albums, 2 of which were nominated for the Mercury Music Award. They've also had 5 Ivor Novello nominations. Their most recent album 2022s “Raw Data Feel” saw the band experiment with the use of AI to create the album artwork as well as some of the lyrics for the album. Mark Hanslip, a researcher from the Unversity of York, helped Higgs develop an AI bot named Kevin which was fed 4 sources of information: LinkedIn's terms and conditions, the classic poem Beowulf, 400,000 posts from controversial message board 4chan, and the sayings of the Confucius. The generated results were poured through and compiled into useable material. Jonathan has generally preferred to keep secret which lyrics are his and which were generated by AI, which accounts for about 5% of the albums lyrics. The band's debut album 2010s “Man Alive” is about to get a deluxe reissue. It's an album I really like, so it was a great opportunity to speak to Jonathan. Hope you enjoy it.Twitter (X): @signalspodcastInstagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

Originally from Boston, Bijon began his studies of classical trumpet at the prestigious New England Conservatory Of Music Preparatory School. While doing his undergrad work at The Unversity of Southern California, Bijon began his journey into the world of commercial music. Equally at home in the concert hall, studio, or arena, Bijon has made a name for himself as a versatile and dependable player who always tries to look as good on stage as he sounds. Check out what Bijon has to say about East Coast vs West Coast styles, playing lead trumpet, Snooky Young, a balanced approach to sound, mouthpiece buzzing, learning to adjust, lip size and pliability, trumpet mouthpieces, switching musical genres, his favorite types of gigs, the differences between playing live, in the studio, and on television, how to develop consistency, the need for constant improvement, the importance of a consistent warm-up routine, shirts and shoes, and so much more!
