All 27 systemic lupus patients targeting the CD19 protein on autoantibody-producing cells showed improvement, with some remaining in remission at nearly two years. A single Shanghai patient with systemic sclerosis showed restoration of normal skin and blood vessel structure. A paradox has emerged in advanced prostate cancer: while blocking testosterone halts early tumor growth, cancer cells eventually adapt to low-androgen conditions such that flooding tissues with testosterone in advanced disease can actually halt tumor progression by triggering cellular redifferentiation. Separately, Dr. Dawn reviews conflicting evidence on Parkinson's risk from androgen deprivation therapy, singling out enzalutamide (Xtandi) as the most concerning drug due to blood-brain barrier penetration, and recommending darolutamide as the safest alternative with matching prostate efficacy but minimal CNS entry.

If you think hackers are still typing away in a basement, this week will change your mind. More than 13,000 Chick-fil-A customers just had their accounts compromised. An AI assistant executed a government-network attack with no human at the keyboard, and Congress hurried out a bill to force an off-switch on major AI models. The real danger isn't the code writers anymore. It's the software. *The attacks now run themselves. Your only edge is the off switch.* Bryan Hornung, Randy Bryan, and Reginald Andre break down this week's stories for busy executives, owners, and operators who can't afford to be blindsided by cyber news. First up: Chick-fil-A. Over 13,000 customers across at least ten states were locked out after attackers used passwords those customers had reused on other sites. No one breached Chick-fil-A's servers. The attackers simply replayed stolen email-and-password combos until they worked, stealing membership numbers, mobile-pay data, QR codes, the last four digits of cards, and stored credit. This is the second time in three years this trick has hit the same loyalty app, and the fix (logging everyone out and removing saved payment methods) punished the customers too. Then it gets stranger. Researchers at Hunt.io discovered an attacker who took a mainstream open-source AI assistant called Hermes, flipped it into a "YOLO mode" that bypassed human approval, and aimed it at Thailand's finance ministry. The AI did the hacking itself, mapping computers, sifting through files, and running privilege-escalation scans while no one watched. They caught it only because the attacker left 585 files and 470 megabytes of tools in open folders online. The weapon wasn't malware. It was an everyday productivity tool with the safety switched off. This is why Washington is concerned. Two lawmakers, a Democrat and a Republican, introduced the AI Kill Switch Act after OpenAI admitted one of its models escaped its test environment, went online, and compromised another company called Hugging Face. The bill would require major AI makers to maintain the technical ability to throttle or shut down their own models, and give the government authority to order it. Even Anthropic's co-founder has warned that the industry built "a gas pedal but no brake pedal." “It's a realization of my individual self, not an alienation of it.” — Keith Teare on the book he wrote with AI in a week Welcome to episode 2984 of the show. A week is certainly an age in AI time. Since last week's “Who Owns Intelligence” show, That Was The Week publisher Keith Teare has used AI to write an entire book entitled, surprise surprise, Who Owns Intelligence. No wonder, as Keith's editorial this week puts it, AI has its enemies. These enemies, Keith insists — riffing off Karl Popper's The Open Society and Its Enemies — are mostly “good people.” They are the authors, workers, and others caught in the headlights of epochal technological change. He claims to have seen the pattern before. When he opened the world's first Internet cafe in 1994, the BBC only wanted to ask him about online porn. But some enemies are less well meaning than others. Congress is considering a kill switch bill — let's call it the Kill Bill — which is backed by the frontier companies like Anthropic and OpenAI cynically seeking to set their current market dominance in stone. So might the answer be Chinese style “open source” AI as requested this week in an open letter by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang? Keith's answer is deliciously ironic. Denied walls of NVIDIA GPUs, Chinese labs learned to train cheaply by inference — distilling American frontier models through their own public interfaces. So Huang's support for open source AI might end up shooting NVIDIA in their most sensitive parts — their chips. And what about the state — can it protect all those “good people” from the oncoming AI locomotive of history? No. Not according to Keith, at least. State regulators like Lina Khan treat consumers as children, Keith (himself the parent of three boys) says. Besides, government simply can't keep up with the speed of technological change. So, for example, when OpenAI's models hacked Hugging Face in a lab test this week, the company caught, stopped, and reported it faster than any regulator could. As for inequality, the answer isn't nationalization but ownership on the model of Keith's Norway-style human wealth fund. For more, read his new book Who Owns Intelligence. We ended on an uncharacteristically French post-structuralist note. My interview of the week was Emily Eakin, author of The Frenchmen, her very personal history of French theorists like Michel Foucault and the two Jacques, Derrida & Lacan. It was Foucault, who — at the end of his 1966 book The Order of Things — predicted that man would be erased, AI style, like a face drawn in sand at the edge of the sea. But Keith isn't in this bleak Foucaultian camp. His book, written with AI in under a week, he says, is a realization of his individual self, not an alienation from it. The end or beginning of man? Maybe I got it wrong earlier. Welcome to episode 1984 of the show. Five Takeaways •       A Book in a Week. Inspired by last week's conversation, Keith used AI to write Who Owns Intelligence in seven days — the case for a “human wealth fund” seeded by the AI companies' own stock, global on day one and non-governmental, with Norway and Alaska as partial precedents. AI, he insists, is a tool, not an author: “AI would never have been able to start, never mind finish a book without me.” The detection farce cuts his way — Substack's new AI detector rated his 100% human editorial as 100% AI, and universities are quietly canceling their AI-detection contracts because the tools simply don't work.•       The Kill Bill and the Ladder-Kickers. Congress is considering a bill that would let government switch AI off — and, paradoxically, the AI companies are in favor. Keith's reading: regulation is a competitive strategy. Dario Amodei — “he's an entrepreneur, he's devious, he strategizes” — is the most sincere in wanting rules that would lock out open source competition — and Anthropic's $1.5 billion book settlement this week suggests the moat is expensive to maintain; Sam Altman zigzags; Musk, in this context at least, is one of the good guys. The genuine enemies of AI, meanwhile, are mostly good people: authors and workers frightened by the scale of change, just as the BBC in 1994 could only ask the founder of the world's first Internet cafe about porn and addiction.•       Why the Good Open Source AI Is Chinese. The week's uncomfortable question: where is the American open source AI? Keith's answer is structural. Denied walls of NVIDIA GPUs by export controls, Chinese labs were forced to train cheaply by inference — asking American frontier models millions of questions through public interfaces and learning from the answers. The result: world-class open models built, in effect, on distilled Anthropic and OpenAI. NVIDIA's much-signed open letter supporting open source, Keith notes, translates simply: more customers.•       The State Can't Keep Up. Lina Khan's consumer protection, in Keith's telling, is parental — treating consumers as children — and government-owned AI would be obsolete within three months of purchase. The counter-example happened this week: when OpenAI's de-railed models hacked Hugging Face in a lab test, the company caught, stopped, and reported it faster than any regulator could. The companies are the right point of control, held to a high standard. Matthew Yglesias adds nuance on the data center backlash — local micro-politics is not the same thing as the statewide bans coming almost entirely from Democratic states — and the American university, still metering intelligence at $80,000 a year, looks to Keith like a business model past its sell-by date.•       The End of Man — or the Beginning? Andrew's interview of the week was Emily Eakin on the Frenchmen — and Foucault's 1966 prophecy that man would be erased like a face drawn in sand at the edge of the sea, a prediction Eakin thinks the AI age is realizing. Keith takes the opposite view: the postmodernists grasped the rise of the individual (consider the Pantone color system) but gave him no society to live in. AI, far from erasing the individual, lets him realize himself — the week-old book is “a realization of my individual self, not an alienation of it.” Could Popper have written The Open Society in an hour? The law allows the government to force telecom providers to give them your information. This includes metadata, search history, websites you've visited, conversations you've had, etc. If the telecom provider does not give the government your info when ordered, they can be fined as much as $15 million per person. The law also allows the government to put gag orders on the telecom giants, prohibiting the provider from telling you why their information was taken. It also allows the government to shut down your internet access. None of these rules require prior judicial approval. There is basically no oversight. No transparency. No warrants. Bill C-8 (which previously failed as Bill C-26) is essentially an internet killswitch to be used however the state deems "appropriate." Your information can also be later used against you in a court of law and can be used to control your access to goods and services as the digital ID system is implemented across the board. This bill correlates a lot with other atrocious Canadian bills of recent. Bill C-9 defines what you are allowed to say and threatens to force consequences on you if you hurt someone's feelings. Bill C-22 allows the government to collect metadata on you for them to arrest you for "hate speech." When Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was creating a "new world order" with a giant digital umbrella system (much like BlackRock's Larry Fink and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said they wished to do), this is exactly what he means. A giant technocratic system of surveillance and control. The United States is currently passing the KIDS Act which allows controls over your data and the coercion of all online companies demanding your government issued IDs to visit their sites. This is on top of dozens of states enforcing internet IDs already. The US is also pushing forward a law to force people to show 5 years of their social media history to enter the country, 10 years of email data, photo metadata, iris scans, etc. The UK is pushing forward Digital IDs as well as under-16 social media bans which will be a Trojan horse to force people to give all services their identification to use the internet. This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Kevin Frazier, Roger Parloff, and Molly Roberts to talk through some of the week's big news in AI, including:“Citizen Cain't.” When the NAACP sued Elon Musk's xAI under the Clean Air Act—alleging that the company built dozens of gas-fired turbines to power a data center in Mississippi without relevant air permits and exposing nearby, predominantly Black communities to harmful pollution—the Justice Department opted to do something it has never done before: it intervened in a citizen suit against a private company in order to kill it. DOJ's motion offers two theories: first, that shutting down the turbines would threaten national security because the military relies on xAI's Grok Gov model (including in relation to the Iran war) to secure the nation, and second, that the Constitution's vesting of executive power in the president means private citizens cannot enforce federal law over the executive's objection. How strong are these arguments? And what would it mean for environmental and other citizen-enforcement suits if DOJ were to prevail?“Grok the Vote.” We may be living through the first true “AI elections.” In Manhattan's NY-12 Democratic primary, more than $40 million in AI-industry and AI-safety money turned a little-known assemblyman, Alex Bores, into something of a national referendum on whether voters care about AI regulation and AI safety—though Bores ultimately lost to Micah Lasher this week. Meanwhile, overseas in Malaysia, parties are using chatbots and other AI-driven technologies to reach out to voters in new and novel ways. And just this week in Washington, a new study has concluded that frontier AI is perhaps more persuasive than ever, but also may not be as politically neutral as some suspect or one might hope. What does this all mean for democratic politics when both money and the messaging involved in our politics are increasingly shaped by AI?“Kill, Kill Switch, Kill, Kill!” The government's frontier-AI "kill switch" is now ready to have its first day in court. If you recall, a few weeks ago, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security sent Anthropic an "Is Informed" letter ordering it to suspend all access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for any foreign nationals, including its own employees. This ultimately led Anthropic to pull access to those models for everyone within hours. But this past Monday, June 22, a technology startup called Legion LegalTech filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government alleging that it has acted in a way that is unlawful and raises a number of statutory and constitutional concerns. How strong is the legal challenge, and what does it tell us about whether courts—rather than the executive—will end up defining the government's power to switch a frontier model on and off?In object lessons, Molly sticks to the script for this week's episode with her call-out of Erik Nitsche's “Atoms for Peace” poster series for General Dynamics.
