It has been a confusing year so far for the payment processor, Juspay.  On the upside, it is one step closer to unicorn status thanks to a possible 150 million dollar funding round. But at the same time, it has also been getting the cold shoulder from several fintechs that once were a core part of its business. It all began just a few months ago, in December, when the Walmart-owned payment aggregator Phonepe said it would discontinue support from all third-party payment orchestration platforms. Soon after, Razorpay and Cashfree followed suit and severed ties with Juspay. So now merchants have to decide – do they stay the course with Juspay or jump ship? The stakes are at an all time high. Because their decision could reshape the very structure of the payments industry. Tune in. Listen to 'One Billion in 10 Minutes', our new mini series based on The Ken's inaugural case competition. When Emma Seymour arrived at Deputy in early 2022, she became focused on strengthening the company's financial foundation. In the three years since, Deputy has achieved a historic milestone—reaching unicorn status through strategic partnerships with major customers who not only become clients but also invest capital, thereby opening new distribution channels and co-creating additional value.Turning back the clock, Seymour tells us her initial focus was “runway optimization”—a disciplined approach to spending and resource allocation that helped the business thrive in uncertain market conditions.Seymour's path to the CFO office was paved by a broad advisory background, where she honed her ability to identify “leaky taps” and champion data-driven decisions. At Deputy, she has sought to refine revenue models, implement robust metrics, and guide the firm through a series of pivotal fundraising conversations. The move to pursue strategic investments from major customers rather than relying solely on venture capital is now expected not only to deepen customer relationships but also to unlock new distribution channels for Deputy's offerings.Looking back, Seymour tells us she has consistently applied a “storytelling through numbers” philosophy.Along the way, she understood that it was incumbent on finance leadership to make sense of raw data within companies—finance leaders must connect figures to overarching strategy in a way that resonates with board members, employees, and investors alike. This dual focus on clarity and collaboration allowed Deputy to pivot quickly when market conditions shifted, without sacrificing the company's innovation agenda.

Stay humble, stay challenged. In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking I speak with Director, Financial Strategist, and former CFO of Gymshark, Philip Daw.   Chartered accountant, Phil spent 28 years as senior partner in general practice, before in 2019, he was tempted by fast-growing gym wear brand, Gymshark to join them as chief financial officer (CFO).   A brave move considering founder, Ben Francis, was only 27 and the average age of Gymshark employees was 28, but Phil embraced the challenge. During his time with them they became what's known as a ‘Unicorn' business, that is they achieved a billion-dollar valuation!   Now, as Director and financial lead at We Are Whanau, alongside former Gymshark president, Steve Hewitt, Phil helps other companies find their ‘North Star' and progress to Unicorn status.   Of course, this is fascinating stuff but - I hear you ask - what has this got to do with Speaking About Speaking?   Let me explain... I knew very little about Gymshark, the business or its ethos before Phil asked me in September 2021 to go to Gymshark HQ in Solihull and work with him and the team to help improve their public speaking skills. They were presenting to an important and formidable audience and Phil in particular needed a confidence boost.   As I always do, before heading off I did a little research and found that founder, Ben Francis, being an introvert, realised his lack of speaking confidence was making his audience feel uncomfortable, so decided it was his duty to learn the art of public.   I also found that the company motto is ‘Stay Humble.' Which I love! For me, humility is an underestimated but crucial quality that creates curious and compassionate speakers.   I was honoured and excited to have Philip join me for this conversation. We discussed all of the above. Plus, the power of ... Building a culture that empowers people. Influencer marketing. A simple business model. The sliding doors moment. And I surround myself with phenomenal people, I'm not afraid of hiring people that are smarter than me around me, because I'm not always the smartest person. I have more context than anyone else, but these people lift me, and I think the best managers do that - they just find phenomenal talent and then trust that they are not going to be fighting, but showing up for the job and lifting you for the manager that you are." Being comfortable with different opens your mind… Those are the words of our guest today, Christine Lemke, she's the Co-Founder and CEO of Evidation. Christine's story is a unique one, she was adopted from South Korea as a baby into a strict Lutheran household in South Dakota.  Several start-ups later, Christine was encouraged by her own chronic pain to co-found Evidation,an app which uses points as rewards for daily activity, education, and health monitoring. Once users get enough points, they can redeem them for cold hard cash. They reached unicorn status recently, joining the big leagues, but Christine says she doesn't care about reaching this milestone. What does it take to scale a business from an idea to unicorn status? Suneera Madhani would say to look to family values—specifically the ones her Pakistani parents instilled in her. With her brother, Suneera co-founded Stax Payments, a fintech platform now processing $23 billion in payments, so it's clear that these immigrant family values are working. Suneera speaks with Erica about her three-bucket principle to prioritizing what matters most, Stax's rituals around shared meals, why they've chosen a hybrid model for the office, and how onboarding should be intentionally thought through from the moment a prospective hire receives an offer letter. Suneera also runs the CEO School, a platform dedicated to educating women entrepreneurs on how to scale their businesses and go from founder to CEO. Suneera launched this platform after learning that less than 2% of female founders ever break $1 million in revenue, so now she aims to increase that number. CEO School includes a podcast as well as a membership with monthly classes, community events, fireside chats, and a quarterly curated product box. Additionally, Suneera's new CEO School Course—an 8-week experience, with workshops on power, pitch, process, product, people, and profit—is open for enrollment May 19th-May 25th, and you can sign up below!  Please Subscribe, Rate and Review on Apple Podcasts You can also listen to the show on: StitcherOvercast GoogleSpotifyResources:Quotes:“Less than 2% of female founders ever break 1 million in revenue.”“This [success] was all a compilation of saying ‘yes.' Saying yes to opportunity, saying yes to following my heart, following my passions. But I will tell you, there was a point last year where I faced complete, utter burnout. That's usually what happens when we say ‘yes' to too many things. We really have to recalibrate, where can I say ‘no'? And without feeling guilty about saying no. It's definitely a struggle.”“You can have your plate and you can fill it sky high, but usually if you look at a healthy plate, it's balanced in three components. That's how I view the three-bucket principle.”“I think onboarding begins from the offer letter; it begins even on the interview process…So we take it all the way back to say, ‘How can we drive incredible experience all the way through?' And that's just done with purpose and intention and showing your value system.”“I work with my brother; this is a family business as well. Part of our DNA was always one team, one dream. And we're always team above self. That's how I want our people to be, and that's truly this team that we have.”Links to Websites or Resources, text numbers email signupsThe CEO SchoolThe CEO School courseStax PaymentsSuneera's post on immigrant family valuesSuneera's Forbes article on the Great ResignationErica's websiteOrder Erica's book, Rituals RoadmapOrder Erica's book, Bring Your Human to WorkText ‘human' to 66866 to sign up for Erica's newsletter where she shares how to honor relationships well and how to bring your human to work and life.Connect with Suneera:InstagramCEO School InstagramStax Payments InstagramTwitterLinkedInFacebook Connect with Erica: InstagramTwitterLinkedInFacebook
