4. The 2014 Kremlin Decision and Ukrainian Unity Against Russian Imperialism. Serhii Plokhy (Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University) discusses the all-night Kremlin meeting on February 23–24, 2014, where Vladimir Putin and his state security chiefs unilaterally decided to annex Crimea and fragment Ukraine. This scene exemplifies modern Russia's nature as a dictatorship, where critical decisions are made by one man—Putin, a former FSB chekist—without democratic oversight. Putin's dictatorial powers are legally based on the super-presidential constitution approved in 1993, following Boris Yeltsin's actions against the parliament. Previously, Putin built credibility by being brutal during the conquest of Chechnya in 1999. A longstanding stereotype divided Ukraine between westward (often Roman Catholic/cosmopolitan) and eastward (Orthodox/Russian-speaking) orientations. While Russia exploited these existing linguistic, cultural, and religious tensions in 2014 to facilitate the seizure of Crimea and initiate hybrid warfare in Donbas, the ultimate effect of the 2014 aggression was the creation of a much more unified Ukrainian society than had ever existed before. Moscow's failure to recognize this post-2014 change was a fundamental miscalculation when invading in 2022.

Time to look at the spooks again. It seems that the FSB's Military Counterintelligence Department (in other words, the anti-coup squad) may be getting a new head. What does this mean for the internal struggles to replace the ailing current director, Bortnikov? Is 'crown prince' Sergei Korolev finally going to take his place? And what might this mean?My previous look at Korolev was in In Moscow's Shadows 171: The invisible and invidious Sergei Korolev, perhaps the next head of the FSB (20 Oct. 2024) and I branded Nikolai Patrushev 'the most dangerous man in Russia' way, way back in In Moscow's Shadows 6: The Most Dangerous Man in Russia (14 June 2020).The podcast's corporate partner and sponsor is Conducttr, which provides software for innovative and immersive crisis exercises in hybrid warfare, counter-terrorism, civil affairs and similar situations. You can also follow my blog, In Moscow's Shadows, and become one of the podcast's supporting Patrons and gain question-asking rights and access to exclusive extra materials including the (almost-) weekly Govorit Moskva news briefing right here. Fler kommer in.

The FSB is trumpeting its arrests of Ukrainian saboteurs and demanding more surveillance powers. Prosecutor General Krasnov is set to become the chair of the Supreme Court. Figures have been released showing that corruption cases rose 16% in the first half of the year. Put together, how do these highlight the hollowing out of Russia, the convergence of late Putinism and late Brezhnevism?Information about forthcoming book events are here. The podcast's corporate partner and sponsor is Conducttr, which provides software for innovative and immersive crisis exercises in hybrid warfare, counter-terrorism, civil affairs and similar situations. You can also follow my blog, In Moscow's Shadows, and become one of the podcast's supporting Patrons and gain question-asking rights and access to exclusive extra materials including the (almost-) weekly Govorit Moskva news briefing right here. Organizations today face escalating cyber risks spanning state-sponsored attacks, supply chain compromises, and malicious apps. ShinyHunters' breaches of Salesforce platforms (impacting Google and Farmers Insurance) show how social engineering—like voice phishing—can exploit trusted vendors. Meanwhile, Russian actors (FSB-linked “Static Tundra”) continue to leverage old flaws, such as a seven-year-old Cisco Smart Install bug, to infiltrate U.S. infrastructure. Malicious apps on Google Play (e.g., Joker, Anatsa) reached millions of downloads before removal, proving attackers' success in disguising malware. New technologies bring fresh vectors: Perplexity's Comet browser allowed prompt injection–driven account hijacking, while malicious RDP scanning campaigns exploit timing to maximize credential theft.Responses vary between safeguarding and asserting control. The FTC warns U.S. firms against weakening encryption or enabling censorship under foreign pressure, citing legal liability. By contrast, Russia mandates state-backed apps like MAX Messenger and RuStore, raising surveillance concerns. Microsoft, facing leaks from its bug-sharing program, restricted exploit code access to higher-risk countries. Open-source projects like LibreOffice gain traction as sovereignty tools—privacy-first, telemetry-free, and free of vendor lock-in.AI-powered wearables such as Halo X smart glasses blur lines between utility and surveillance. Their ability to “always listen” and transcribe conversations augments human memory but erodes expectations of privacy. The founders' history with facial recognition raises additional misuse concerns. As AI integrates directly into conversation and daily life, the risks of pervasive recording, ownership disputes, and surveillance intensify.Platforms like Bluesky are strained by conflicting global regulations. Mississippi's HB 1126 requires universal age verification, fines for violations, and parental consent for minors. Lacking resources for such infrastructure, Bluesky withdrew service from the state. This illustrates the tension between regulatory compliance, resource limits, and preserving open user access.AI adoption is now a competitive imperative. Coinbase pushes aggressive integration, requiring engineers to embrace tools like GitHub Copilot or face dismissal. With one-third of its code already AI-generated, Coinbase aims for 50% by quarter's end, supported by “AI Speed Runs” for knowledge-sharing. Yet, rapid adoption risks employee dissatisfaction and AI-generated security flaws, underscoring the need for strict controls alongside innovation.Breaches at Farmers Insurance (1.1M customers exposed) and Google via Salesforce illustrate the scale of third-party risk. Attackers exploit trusted platforms and human error, compromising data across multiple organizations at once. This shows security depends not only on internal defenses but on continuous vendor vetting and monitoring.Governments often demand access that undermines encryption, privacy, and transparency. The FTC warns that backdoors or secret concessions—such as the UK's (later retracted) request for Apple to weaken iCloud—violate user trust and U.S. law. Meanwhile, Russia's mandatory domestic apps exemplify sovereignty used for surveillance. Companies face a global tug-of-war between privacy, compliance, and open internet principles.Exploited legacy flaws prove that vulnerabilities never expire. Cisco's years-old Smart Install bug, still unpatched in many systems, allows surveillance of critical U.S. sectors. Persistent RDP scanning further highlights attackers' patience and scale. The lesson is clear: proactive patching, continuous updates, and rigorous audits are essential. Cybersecurity demands ongoing vigilance against both emerging and legacy threats.

Edition No208 | 31-07-2025 - Today's episode involves espionage, treachery, and heroism. The greatest examples of human bravery, and the lowest examples of treachery. * Recent cases of Ukrainians spying for Russia* The devastating moral cost of these betrayals* Profiles of Ukrainian air-force pilots who died serving their country* The lethal FSB agents tracked down and killed in Ukraine* Can Ukraine counter traitors and constant attempts to penetrate its security by Russia.Exposing the Spies - In July 2025, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) detained a Ukrainian Air Force major, working as a flight instructor, accused of spying for Russia's FSB. The officer allegedly leaked coordinates of airfields, flight schedules, and departure orders—especially those hosting Western-supplied F‑16s, Mirage 2000s, and Su‑24s. The SBU described the leaks as tactical blueprints for Russian missile and drone strikes. He even provided an analytical report advising on strike tactics to ‘bypass Ukrainian air defences' (Reuters, July 30, 2025).This is treachery of the highest order, not only his country, but the heroes he instructed. “In particular, the enemy's priority targets were airfields where F‑16s, Mirage 2000s and Su‑24s were based … The agent collected the coordinates … schedules and … the order of their departure” This case mirrored a similar arrest reported earlier—recruitment via his ex-wife, a former military officer in occupied Melitopol. He allegedly provided Russia's Aleksandr Belodedov from FSB's Alpha unit with target data before Ukraine intercepted his transmissions and detained him in Lviv Oblast (Kyiv Independent), July 3, 2025).----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------DESCRIPTION:Heroes and Traitors: Stories of Ukrainian Bravery and BetrayalIn this gripping episode of Silicon Bites, we delve into the stark contrast between heroism and treachery in Ukraine amid its resistance against Russia. Edition No200 | 24-07-2025 - Stalin's Camps to Putin's Russia — The hint of a new Gulag Archipelago takes shape. Remember the Gulag? That grim and terrifying institution of forced labour, mass arrests and industrial scale torment that Stalin used to apparently modernize Russia. It wasn't just camps—it was terror, ideology turned into watch towers and razor wire, and millions of lives drained into Russia's unforgiving soil, for what seemed like capricious and measly ends. Above all, the Gulag was a mindset – of horror for incarcerated, and terror for those threatened with it. But it also served as a projection of power for the Russian state on the international stage. It said ‘look at the horrors we are prepared to inflict on our own people. Imagine, if we are capable of this, then what we can do to you, and your loved ones.' This is where so many people get Russia's rulers wrong right down to Putin. Russia's power, its existence does not come from the raw exercise of power, because in monetary term and most other indices that denote powerful countries, Russia trails far behind. No, Russia's power, its sense of worth, its status, its very existence cones from the idea that is feared. If Russia is not feared, Putin believes, and has hinted at many times in speeches, then it is not. To be fear is to exist, and to be ignored is the real existential threat to Putin and by extension all of Russia. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: CEPA, Gulag 2.0 — Russia Reopens the Camps (June 23, 2025)The Guardian, Gulag History Museum… closed (Nov 14, 2024) The Moscow Times, Kremlin & FSB order museum closure (Nov 14, 2024) Meduza, Citing ‘fire safety violations'… museum shutters (Nov 15, 2024)The Art Newspaper, Battle for memory at Russia's Gulag Museum (Mar 5, 2025) Barents Observer, FSB wants its own pre-trial detention centres (Feb 28, 2025) Meduza, The End of a Life Cycle (Jan 15, 2025) Wikipedia, Gulag Museum, Solovki prison campThe Guardian, Skobov sentenced to 16 years (Mar 21, 2025)Vox, Kara‑Murza's experience (Dec 1, 2024)Memorial (society) Wikipedia entry----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment. Bestselling spy novelists, David McCloskey and Paul Vidich, join Joe Haddow for a good ole fashioned booking off!As well as discussing their new novels ('The Seventh Floor' and 'The Poets Game'), they also share some great book recommendations and talk us through their writing processes.Spy novels are such a great way to learn about world history - and have arguably never been more popular - so we delve a little more into this genre, referencing John Le Carre - and his son, Nick Harkaway, who was a recent Book Off guest. Joe's continued reading battle with Le Carre continues, and whilst confessing this again, Paul tries to his hardest to encourage him to pick up The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. As well as lots of book chat, Joe and David share a love of Seinfeld, £75 martinis, and there's a bit of a natter about good French wine (but luckily, Joe hasn't been on the booze pre-recording like a previous ep!)THE BOOK OFF'All The Colours Of The Dark' by Chris WhitakerVS'The Quiet American' by Graham GreeneWe hope you're enjoying Series 14! Please do follow us on instagram, bluesky, and the others: @ohdobookoff(here's some more gumf on our guests brilliant books) The Poet's Game by Paul Vidich Alex Matthews thought he had left it all behind. His CIA career, the viper's den of bureaucracy at headquarters and the lies and stress of the cat and mouse game of double agents. But then the Director came asking for a favour.Alex is a different man from when he had run Moscow station, where he recruited a network of 'poet spies' including the one he names BYRON. He has pieced his life back together after a tragic boating accident killed his wife and daughter but the scars remain. But Alex remains, in his mind, a patriot, and so he begrudgingly accepts the Director's request. Something, though, is off about the whole operation from the start. The Russians seem one step ahead and the CIA suspects there is a traitor in the agency. Alex realizes that by getting back into the game he has risked everything he has worked for: his new marriage, his family's safety, his firm. As the noose tightens around Alex, and the FSB closes in, the operation becomes a hall of mirrors with no exits. To find redemption, Alex must uncover the secrets behind BYRON or lose everything. The Seventh Floor by David McCloskeyAll your life you're CIA. Then you're not.A Russian arrives in Singapore with a secret to sell. When the Russian is killed and Sam Joseph, the CIA officer dispatched for the meet, goes missing, Artemis Procter is made a scapegoat and run out of the service. Traded back in a spy swap, Sam appears at Procter's central Florida doorstep months later with an explosive secret: there is a Russian mole hidden deep within the upper reaches of CIA.As Procter and Sam investigate, they arrive at a shortlist of suspects made up of both Procter's closest friends and fiercest enemies. The hunt soon requires Procter to dredge up her own checkered past in service of CIA, placing her and Sam into the sights of a savvy Russian spymaster who will protect Moscow's mole in Langley at all costs, even if it means wreaking bloody havoc across the United States.Bouncing between the corridors of Langley and the Kremlin, the thrilling new novel by David McCloskey explores the nature of friendship in a faithless business, and what it means to love a place that does not love you back.

This week, Chris and Matt dive into the war between Israel and Iran, now entering its second week, with President Trump weighing a direct US strike on Iran's deeply buried Fordow nuclear facility. They unpack how the conflict began, Mossad's covert sabotage campaign, the mounting civilian toll, and the split between Israeli and US intelligence over Iran's nuclear ambitions. They also explore how Trump's political coalition is fracturing over potential US military involvement, whether the Iranian regime can survive the assault, and what might come next. Then, they turn to leaked documents revealing how Russia's FSB sees China as a serious espionage threat, despite public rhetoric of partnership. On today's show Andrew and Bill begin with a call between President Trump and Xi, two days of meetings between the U.S. and China in London, and an apparent effort from both sides to de-escalate. Topics include: Retracing steps of the past few weeks, clarity for the U.S. and others on the PRC's leverage over rare earths, the possibility of the U.S. easing tech export controls, and the lack of trust on both sides in the wake of the past few months. From there: The U.S. has concerns about a Chinese embassy in the UK, the New York Times surfaces a purported FSB document outlining various counterespionage anxieties related to the PRC, and Xi's daughter joins a dinner with Lukashenko. At the end: People's Daily publishes an interview with Ren Zhengfei, Xi continues his attempts to curb excess among party members, and Victor Wembanyama visits a Shaolin Monastery.
A hall of mirrors with no exits, The Poet's Game is a sophisticated portrait of a spy working to uncover layers of deceit behind a Russian plot on the American president.Alex Matthews thought he had left it all behind: his CIA career, the viper's den of bureaucracy at headquarters, the deceits of the cat-and-mouse game of double agents, and the sudden trips to Russia, which poisoned his marriage and made him an absentee husband and father, with tragic results. But then the Director came asking for a favor. Something that only Alex could do because it involved the asset Byron—a Russian agent whom Alex had recruited. Byron had something of great interest to the CIA; the Director said it was a matter of grave national security that implicated the White House, and that Byron would hand over the kompromat once he was extricated from Russia. But Alex is a different man than when he had run Moscow station: he has pieced his life back together after a tragic accident killed his wife and daughter—but the scars remain. He left the agency; started a financial firm that made him wealthy; and met a new woman, Anna, who works as an interpreter in the CIA. Anna is beautiful and supportive and helps him find love again after years of drowning in grief alongside his son. Throughout the last years, Alex has remained, in his mind, a patriot, and so he begrudgingly accepts the Director's request.Something, though, doesn't feel right about the whole operation from the start. The Russians seem one step ahead and the CIA suspects there is a traitor in the agency, passing along secrets to the Russians. Alex realizes that, by getting back into the game, he has risked everything he has worked for: his marriage, his family's safety, and the trust of his closest colleagues—one of whom is betraying him. As the noose tightens around Alex, and the FSB closes in on Byron, the operation becomes a hall of mirrors with no exits. To find redemption, Alex must uncover Byron's secrets or risk losing everything. The Poet's Game is a remarkably sophisticated and emotionally resonant portrait of a spy from a renowned master of the genre.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. In this eye-opening episode, Jim Wallis and Robert P. Jones dive deep into the latest poll data revealing President Trump's unprecedented negative approval ratings within his first 100 days back in office. Discover how Trump ranks as the most unpopular president since World War II at this stage, with a majority of Americans-including 55% of independents-viewing him as a dangerous dictator whose power must be limited to protect American democracy. The discussion also highlights the sharp racial and religious divides in Trump's support, with White Evangelical Protestants largely backing him, while Christians of Color and other faith groups overwhelmingly reject his leadership. Tune in for a compelling analysis of what these numbers mean for America's political and moral future.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Professor Jesse Kaufman returns to The Common Bridge to deliver a sobering assessment of the Ukraine-Russia war three years after the invasion began. What started as a discussion about territorial disputes has revealed itself as something far more fundamental: Russia's existential denial of Ukrainian nationhood.Kaufman shatters common misconceptions about the conflict, explaining that contrary to popular belief, NATO expansion didn't trigger the war. Rather, Ukraine sought NATO protection only after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. The professor offers rare perspective on both Ukrainian resilience and Russian strategic failures, drawing from his extensive regional expertise and recent visits to Poland where he witnessed the refugee crisis firsthand—notably populated almost exclusively by women and children, as Ukrainian men remained to fight. The conversation takes a particularly revealing turn when examining President Zelensky's precarious position. "Zelensky is a dead man," Kaufman states bluntly, explaining why Ukraine's leader faces permanent FSB targeting regardless of the war's outcome. This existential threat explains why Zelensky famously declared "I'm not playing cards" during his controversial White House meeting—a statement mockingly misinterpreted by many observers.Perhaps most concerning is Kaufman's assessment of Europe's defense capabilities. Despite pledges to increase military spending, European nations have become "thoroughly civilianized," lacking both the will and capability to defend themselves without American support. As Kaufman puts it, "I just don't see Jens from West Berlin trying to stab somebody in a trench in East Ukraine."For anyone seeking to understand why this conflict defies simple diplomatic solutions, this conversation provides profound insights into why, for Ukrainians, this truly is a fight for "existence or annihilation." In the first half, I look at developments regarding Ukraine (I'm getting more sceptical about Putin's interest in a deal) and profile former FSB general Sergei Beseda, 'the Baron.'In the second half, for Cosmonautics Day, I look at the ailing Russian space programme. The FPRI report by Pavel Luzin I mention is here. Edition No119 | 29-03-2025 - A limo from 'Putin's car fleet' has blown up in a huge blast in central Moscow – which will undoubtedly fuel the already intense paranoia of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This comes just a day after pictures emerged of his honour guard being searched for bombs.Signs are intensifying of Putin's paranoia about losing his life to assassination, as sewers in Moscow are set to be routinely searched and his own guards are patted down. One story doing the rounds apparently from an ex-bodyguard suggest the despot uses his personal protection to operate his washing machine due to assassination fears. The Aurus limousine from Putin's "official car fleet" was destroyed in a huge blast on a street just north of Moscow's FSB secret service headquarters in Lubyanka. Footage showed the fire started in the engine of the £275,000 Aurus Senat subsequently spread to the interior of the vehicle. Workers from nearby restaurants and bars poured onto Sretenka Street before fire services arrived. In photos black smoke can be seen billowing out of the destroyed vehicle as the fire rages. Footage taken from another angle suggested the car's rear was also damaged. It's not known who was using the car at the time, or even if there was anyone inside. The vehicle is believed to be owned by Putin's Presidential Property Management Department. And of course, there has been no explanation about what caused the sudden blaze. ----------LINKS:https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/34134385/putin-limo-exploded-fire-paranoid/https://euroweeklynews.com/2025/03/29/putins-limousine-ablaze-after-mysterious-explosion-in-moscow/https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/limo-from-putin-s-car-fleet-explodes-as-paranoia-increases-over-assassination-attempts/ar-AA1BTggThttps://metro.co.uk/2025/03/26/putin-paranoid-assassination-people-searching-sewers-22799118/----------Easter Pysanky: Silicon Curtain - https://car4ukraine.com/campaigns/easter-pysanky-silicon-curtainCar for Ukraine has joined forces with a group of influencers, creators, and news observers during this special Easter season. Black Russian Terrier: "The Black Pearl of Russia" [caption id="attachment_13770" align="alignright" width="354"] Emily Fagan showing one of her Black Russian Terriers.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves is joined by Emily Fagan, breeder of Black Russian Terriers, for a Love the Breeds episode talking about the “big black fluffy bearded beasts” that have become her “spirit animal.” “Like they are the Black Pearl of Russia and they really are like the hidden gem. Most people, they see them and they're like, ohh, boy, that's kind of this big black scary kind of looking dog. And they're so stoic and regal in public and then they come home and they're absolute goofballs, complete clowns,” Fagan said. “A short background history that Stalin basically was jealous of the Germans, you know, and their wonderful police military dogs. So he's like, you know what, I'm gonna make a superior breed of dog for military and police work. He got a bunch of scientists, geneticists together and actually started developing the Black Russian Terrier. The four main contributors are the Rottweiler, the giant Schnauzer, the Newfoundland and the Airedale Terrier. So there's the terrier. But they are very much NOT a terrier.” [caption id="attachment_13768" align="alignleft" width="389"] Black Russian Terrier training for "bite work" competition.[/caption] The breed was utilized by the KGB, and still is today by its successor agency, the FSB, as well as being used in the Russian prison system. It's job, Fagan said, was to terrify people. And they're very good at their job. The best owners of BRTs are not first-time dog owners, Fagan said. She added that structure and very defined rules are critical. “You do need to be fair because they are very smart,” Fagan noted. “This is not an old school, put the dog on its back. You can't do that. Absolutely not. You would ruin your relationship with this breed because it's built on trust too. You have to build respect. So a person who understands a structured environment is really going to thrive.”
In the aftermath of the virtual destruction of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), millions will starve and millions will die around the world. In this very special episode of the Jim Wallis Podcast, we provide a window into the magnitude of the torment being inflicted upon those Jesus called “the least of these.” You can read Jim's Commentary on this subject hereRev. Jim Wallis speaks with an eyewitness to the desperation, devastation, and imminent death that is resulting from the Trump Administration's vicious assault on people providing life-saving humanitarian aid around the world. Rev. Tim Costello, a global expert on international humanitarian aid, is the former Chief Executive of World Vision Australia (WVA) and the current Executive Director of Micah Australia. He was in Kenya and Uganda when the Trump Administration inaugurated the irresponsible and unconscionable freeze on USAID funds. “Kenyan women, clinicians, doctors [were] in tears saying, ‘the medications, the U-S-A-I-D medications have dried up. This means we cannot treat the people who we've treated for so many years, poor Kenyan people without a chance without these medications.'”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this very special guest episode from Social Justice Warrior icon Rev. Jim Wallis, we examine one of Donald Trump's biggest legal battles regarding his alleged unconstitiutional efforts invading houses of worship. A historic lawsuit has been filed by the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection, in partnership with the Center on Faith and Justice, on the behalf of a broad coalition of 27 national church and organization plaintiffs, whose combined membership numbers in the millions, to defend the teachings of Jesus and the traditions of all Abrahamic religions. {Subscribe to weekly Jim's Substack column here to stay up to date with our progress.}Rev. Jim Wallis speaks with two important leaders involved in the case of Mennonite Church USA VS The Department of Homeland Security: Kelsey Brown Corkoran, the Supreme Court Director at the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown Law, and Reverend Carlos Malave, the president of the Latino Christian National Network (LCNN), which is a broad Christian Latino network in our country, including Pentecostals, evangelicals, Catholics, and mainline leaders. On the first day of his second term as President of the United States, according to Fox News, Donald Trump ordered the Department of Homeland Security to upend a decades long practice honoring sacred spaces and “sensitive locations” to allow religious leaders and congregants to obey the commandment of Jesus from Matthew 25: “As ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Jesus' words include “the stranger” which means immigrant and refugee in Greek.Immigrants and refugees, who rely on these sacred spaces for sustenance for their souls and bodies, are being deterred by the aggressive and unorthodox tactics from the Trump Administration that the lawsuit alleges are a violation of the First Amendment right to freely practice religion.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
